INTRODUCING THEHARRIS CENTER’S SPRING LINEUP OF PERFORMING ARTS! Dear Arts Lover,

From the outset, the mission of the Harris Center for the Arts has been to enrich the lives of people throughout the capital region by providing venues and opportunities to experience artistic work, celebrate cultural traditions and participate in the creative process. Since opening in 2011, we’ve had well over half a million visits to the Center and the response has been unanimous – the Center really is the place to experience great shows, up close!

And the good news today is that there’s still plenty more art and entertainment coming your way in the second half of this season. Presentations include the national tours of five Broadway shows, concerts by country music icons to international orchestras, and visits by a number of world-class dance companies. Local arts organizations are offering more than 50 performances to choose from, and Folsom Lake College theatre, dance, music and visual arts programs are showcasing fine work by students. For a complete listing of events, see the winter/spring calendar on page 31. All told, it’s a diverse array of exciting fare, some from far away, some from nearby, all top flight. Literally something for everyone.

As always, thank you for being part of the Harris Center’s success, and for all of the support and enthusiasm you have shown. Looking forward to seeing you at the theater!

AN ACOUSTIC EVENING WITH SAMMY KERSHAW

Since his debut on the music scene in the early 90s, Kershaw has remained one of the most consistent power hitters in country music — both with a chain of major hit records and sell-out touring schedules. Sammy Kershaw’s plan for country music is reclaiming its roots and recapturing the spirit that made it great. “Man, for someone like me who had George Jones’ music imprinted in my DNA before birth, the last few years have been rough as a fan of country music,” noted Kershaw candidly in a recent national interview. “Country music is not a formula… it’s a music with its own soul… and I’m all about saving that soul!”

Billie Holiday’s deeply soulful singing made new and lasting masterpieces of jazz standards. Similarly, Wilson’s explorations of blues, country, folk, roots music, and more have reshaped the way people think about jazz and jazz vocalists. For Wilson’s artistry, Down Beat magazine selected her as Jazz Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years, and Time magazine recognized her as “America’s best singer” and “the true heir of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.” Now, for the centennial of Billie Holiday’s birth, the Grammy® Award winning Wilson pays homage to Lady Day with a new tribute recording and special concert tour. ALASDAIR FRASER AND THE SAN FRANCISCO SCOTTISH FIDDLERS

Picture a stage with 50 fiddlers, backed by piano, drums and guitars, projecting a sound as lively as a dance band, as majestic as a symphony orchestra; a group that creates “a raucous sampling of authentic music from Scotland... [there was] no delayed standing ovation here; the audience instantaneously rose to its feet with the final notes” (Anchorage Daily News). Founded in 1986 by Master Scottish Fiddler Alasdair Fraser —“one of Scotland’s most valued tradition bearers”(BBC) —the group was so much fun in their 2014 visit to the Harris Center that we decided to bring them back for an encore.

HARRIS CENTER PRESENTS

APRIL NATALIE MACMASTER AND DONNELL LEAHYVisions from Cape Breton and Beyond

As so many Harris Center patrons will tell you, there’s nothing like a Natalie MacMaster concert. “She’s a ball of fire, performing jigs and reels with unstoppable, foot-tapping energy and ballads with irresistible, keening passion” (Los Angeles Times). This time, though, it’s a family affair and summit of two of the greatest fiddlers in the world as she’s joined by her husband Donnell Leahy and their mega-talented children. With a visually stunning background showcasing the beauty of the Canadian coastline, both concerts will highlight the unique talents, influences, and stories of the first family of traditional fiddling, through dancing, singing, and, of course, world-class music-making.

“To call Natalie MacMaster the most dynamic performer in Celtic music today is high praise, but it still doesn’t get at just how remarkable a concert artist this Cape Breton Island fiddler has become” (Boston Herald). Son of a fiddle-playing father and champion step dancing mother, Donnell Leahy is also widely acclaimed for his agility on the fiddle as well as his prominent role in the rise of the family band Leahy — a favorite on the festival circuit and winner of multiple Juno Awards (Canada’s version of the Grammy®).

FALCON’S EYE THEATREThe Falcon’s Eye is the production company of the Department of Theatre and Cinema at Folsom Lake College. Their mission is to provide audiences with insightful theatre that brings new perspectives to life through fascinating, thought-provoking storytelling that challenges expectations. Traveling through time and around the world to bring the community and students a diversity of styles and voices, its productions amaze and enrich audiences for a lifetime.

Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill Falcon’s Eye closes its eighth season with Caryl Churchill’s blistering sociosexual satire Cloud 9. In act one we are in 1880s British Africa, experiencing a spoof of the Victorian Empire and its rigid attitudes, especially towards sex. The second act shifts to London in 1980, except it’s only twenty-five years later for the surviving characters, and all those repressed sexual longings have evaporated along with the empire. Presented in conjunction with FLC’s Women in Theatre program. Due to mature content, recommended for older teenagers and up.

GALLIM DANCE

Founded in 2007, New York based Gallim Dance quickly captured the attention of fellow artists, presenters, and audiences around the world with its award-winning work, ensemble of dancers, and a fearless physicality grounded by deep humanity and expressed through the madness and joy of the imagination. With dancers “of the highest caliber” (Dance Europe), the company performs the work of its Artistic Director Andrea Miller, a 2014 Guggenheim fellow, whose “viscerally physical movement wrings every inch of life from her dancers-and you’ll be holding your breath, too” (New York Magazine). Vogue simply describes her work as a blend of “wild-child dynamism with quiet emotional resonance.” Don’t miss this chance to see one of New York’s most inventive contemporary dance companies.
