As a crowd passes by, they look back and lament

The compass has witnessed one fight too many,

It felt guilty it couldn’t help.

Every solider it sees die;

The compass feels loss anew.

It never forgets the past though its needle may spin

It’s a box of saviour for many.

Man cherishes it, they love it

They don’t want it to go.

A war ship compass.

Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE DOUBLE TROUBLE AT STATE CHAMPS! Our 2017 athletics campaign has certainly been our most successful one in a long time. Two individual athletes and two relay teams competed in the State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium yesterday in tricky conditions. This certainly was an exciting and wonderful achievement for all involved. Brooke F. was our first individual athlete out of the blocks as she ran in the 9/10yr 200m event. Calm, yet determined, Brooke was outstanding as she dug deep to post a personal best time of 31.87s. Finishing 6th in her heat, the final eluded Brooke on this occasion, however she was the 11th fastest in the State over 200m. What an awesome effort Brooke. Congratulations! Isabel F-B’s 11yr Discus event was next on the program and the drizzle had started, making the discus event a challenge. Not to mention the fact that Isabel’s relay was scheduled at the same time as her discus! Although there were no PBs for Izzy at this event, she should be thrilled with her result of 15th best in the State. The winner of her event threw over 27m! Congratulations Isabel. The extreme cheering and positive energy of parents, siblings and grandparents now turned to the track for it was relay time. The Hartwell support crew were on the edge of their seats. Our 9/10yr and 11yr girls’ relay teams headed to the call room 30mins prior to their event, demonstrating a hint of nervous excitement, which was overridden by a steely resolve of determination and composure, way beyond their years. The support crew on the other hand was a bundle of nerves! Both teams came into this competition as the 9th fastest qualifiers out of 16 teams, and only eight teams would go through to an evening final. The girls really were up against it and it would come down to the team who could really make seamless baton changes. The 9/10 girls hit the track first and they were outstanding. They were in the mix. Although their changes were good, it was now a waiting game as the first three place getters of each heat and the next two fastest times would make the final. HPS finished 4th in their heat.

After what seemed like an eternity, finally the qualifiers were posted and the girls had made the final qualifying as the 7th fastest team in 1:03.4. Wow! The 11yr girls were next on the track, also going in as underdogs. In a great run, the girls posted a time of 1:01.28 with terrific changes. They too finished 4th in their heat and snuck into the final in 7th position. Our aim was to make the finals and having both teams qualify was a wonderful result. Everyone was thrilled. After a stroll around South Melbourne to get away from the hype at the track, the teams were warmed up and back in the call room ready for their 5.20pm finals. The pearls of wisdom were simple. Finals are a whole new ball game, rankings mean nothing and the medals are up for grabs. They are anybody’s! The 9/10 yr team were good in the heat, but we knew they had room for a big improvement in their changes. Bella G. lead the team off hard and got a great start, handing the baton to Brooke F. who was red hot and determined to give her team the best chance of a medal as she missed an individual one. In another perfect change, Olivia P. rounded the bend with more strength and speed than she has ever displayed. It was clear we were in the hunt for a medal. Liv gave Abi D. the baton and every opportunity to pinch a medal. Abi kicked and fought hard right to the line crossing with a flurry of runners. A nervous wait followed as there was a DQ in the race. The wait finally ended in elation. Bella, Brooke, Olivia and Abi ran a PB of 1:02.53, came from 9th, believed in themselves and each other, believed that the medals really were up for grabs and took hold of the bronze medal with grit and determination. Well done girls, third in the state, not bad! The 11yr old girls also demonstrated perfectly executed changes. Siena C. to Madi H. to Izzy F-B. and finally to Olivia S. The team was strong, gutsy and determined as they did their best to chase down some impressive opposition. Four teams ran under 60s and the winning team posted a SSV record, so it was on! Our wonderful team ran a PB of 1:00.97 in a State Final and went back to back I might add in making the final. We could not ask for any more than that. Well done girls! These results were cause for much celebration. Thank you to our expert relay coach Brad Boag for his perfect preparation of both teams. Brad has coached teams to State Finals for us for the past five years and we cannot thank him enough. Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents and to Chris Howell in particular, for their wonderful support throughout this long but extremely rewarding relay campaign. GO HARTWELL GIRLS! HPS SWIMMING CARNIVAL We had another huge event during the past week as our Year 3-6 students headed to PLC for our annual House Swimming Carnival. Our Year 3 & 4 students kicked off the event, which was an outstanding

success with so many swimmers challenging themselves and achieving their own personal best. The Hartwell spirit was in full voice as everyone cheered on teammates. The Year 5 & 6 students were just as inspiring. Every swimmer demonstrated that ‘have a go’ attitude with such enthusiasm and it was clear that ‘doing your best’ was the ethos of the event. A special mention to our Year 3 students who were particularly spectacular in their first swimming carnival. The Year 5 & 6 relays were also extremely exciting. Thank you to all of our fantastic teachers who worked so hard throughout the day to ensure the event ran so smoothly. Thank you to all of the parents who assisted on the day and those who travelled on the bus with us: Connie Macaulay, Fee Klebanowski, Katherine Hadaway, Caroline Morpeth, Kim Major, Alissa Turinui. Thank you to our starter Karl and to Nick for running the results table. The results are below but it was a wonderfully exciting day for Highfield who finally won their first House event since our current Year 6 students were in Prep! This was pointed out to me by the ecstatic Highfield House Captain Mike W, who made a wonderful acceptance speech on behalf of his house. Well done to captains Mike W, Serena S, Owen M and Della H. The results were as follows:

HPS Swimming Year 3 & 4 Final results

1st Place Milverton Highfield

2nd Place Highfield Milverton

3rd Place Merton Oberwyl

4th Place Oberwyl Merton

Our House Spirit Award for the Swimming Carnival was an easy selection this year. The award went to two Year 6 students who fill my heart with pride. Congratulations to Emma O. and Nick M. For Nick this really is a celebration of his last two swimming carnivals as he has completed every event on offer, with a no fuss, have a go and do your best attitude. No matter where he placed in the event, Nick was proud of his efforts to finish and could not wait for his next race. Determined, resilient and always smiling, Nick is a wonderful example to others. Well done Nick! Emma’s carnival was a very special day for her as she really challenged herself and overcame some very personal demons in terms of self-efficacy and confidence. Going in to the event, her goal was to compete in one race. What I love about Emma is her determination, her courage, her resilience and the fact she was prepared to really challenge herself on her journey to find her ‘sporty’ passion. And it was really hard for Em, but she got through it. She did the freestyle event and enjoyed it! She then did the backstroke, followed by the breaststroke! Emma was amazing. She inspires us to be better athletes and to be better people. Emma can do anything when she backs herself. Like all of us, she just needs to believe in herself. Congratulations Emma, you should be very proud.

T20 BLAST Congratulations to our Year 6 students who competed in the Glen Iris District Cricket Victoria T20 Blast last Tuesday. Hartwell fielded nine extremely competitive teams. Our competition boys team won their pool, outclassing Camberwell South in the final and will now go onto compete in the regional finals. Our girls competition team was also outstanding. Making the final, they fell just four runs short of a strong Ashburton team. Thank you to the Year 6 teachers, Nick and Karl for their support on what really was an enjoyable day. HOT SHOTS Well done to our Year 6 Hot Shots Tennis teams who played in the Boroondara Division finals last Wednesday. This was a fantastic morning of tennis played in good spirit and a very high standard of skill. Our girls’ team of eight came out on top throughout that competition and will now head to EMR finals. The boys put together some great tennis but no finals unfortunately. Well done to all players. Thank you to Miss. Buckley for supporting the team. PE LESSONS It is an exciting fortnight in PE as we move from gymnastics to tennis with the expert coaches from Toptenn Tennis Academy running clinics for all year levels.
