Section 2: Statement of study

First Study planIn the last unit ‘Body of Work’ , I concentrated to find my new expressing style. Because my previous illustration style were roughly divided into the following. Drawing my illustration with embroidery or using Illustrator and Photoshop from beginning to the end of art works. Thus, I required to do hand drawing rather than embroidery or digital illustration. So I have done almost of my artworks at the last unit by using watercolor, ink and silkscreen printing energetically. Those result, I found it is a kind of same things to do hand drawing and to exercise my body. It helps me to think every things be simple. It reminds me enjoyable to drawing and painting, and also this is the best way to express my every moment feeling and in that place atmosphere more emotionally. In regards to silkscreen printing, I could expand my possibility of creation. It mixes the embroidery and silk screen printing. Before I just drawn illustration on some plane textile and then embroidered. After learning silk screen printing, I can try out many of embroidery way on the same illustration. From these trial and error, I can mention that it connects to make some products for the next unit.

Based on these considerations, I would like to try to the next step. That is ‘Character design’ and it also includes Comic, Package design and Product design.

First of all, I have two my original characters. One is named “ Nyanco ” (It means cat) and another is “ Nodochinco Boy ” (It means a boy names tonsil) . I have draw them since I was an undergraduate. At first, they were just some doodles. But meanwhile, their expression and motion were getting abundant, and now I often use them to represent myself. “ Nyanco ” was created just because I love cat and if I have a cat, I want to get a white one. “ Nodochinco Boy ” was born at the package design class when I was in undergraduate. Theme was “ Package design from a part of your body ”. For the first time, I had no idea, but I remember that I have strange shape tonsil what is like turned the heart upside down. So I decided to make a character of my tonsil. Then I created some figures and packages for it. From them, I learned It is able to connect character design with product and package design.

In Master’s Project 1, I would like to concentrate my artwork on creating Comic. The reason is I am making some records about my daily life with my characters. It is such a journal. Mostly it has been drawn about a lot of customary things and my emotion in this abroad days. I suggest these my art works have potentiality to success in comic.

In the content, for the most part I can say it about “ How I used to living overseas ”.In this abroad, I have encountered many surprise, strange and funny things. Thus I am going to illustrate how I overcome from these things. This comic will consist as reportage and an essay in comic base form.

As some examples, I often use it as references to consider my comic story and selected audience, It is Akino Kondoh “ New York de Kangae-chu ” (It means “ I am thinking in New York ”). Akino is a Japanese woman who lives in NY and a Japanese style painter, an animator and an illustrator. Her illustration style is always simple and sophisticated but her comic story are very friendly and ordinary. Besides sometimes she put some poems in her comic with her cartoons. Therefore, we can be supposed that majority of her audience are women who are same age with Akino, it is around early twenties or late thirties. On the other hand, I would like to show a example of comic which is cuteness style illustration but for adults story. It is Hiromi Morishita “ Shonen Ashibe ” (It means “ A boy Ashibe ”) . This comic characters were drawn childish and prettily. But Hiromi had written about a hard world we are living in nowadays in that comics, especially, She is a

Page 7: HARUNA YAMASHITA

shrewd observer of human nation. So she put a lot of cool headed ironic in her comics. These are the charm point of this comic. Practically, they were attract not only children but even wide range of age groups in Japan. These two example comics feature have well valanced humor and coolness to consist as reportage comics. In addition, these are what I should aim to my comic. Therefor, I have to cultivate my observation. That is off cause for others and also for my sentiment deeply. Accordingly, I am able to create my comic story much more refined.

Furthermore, it is some references as illustration and character design which is “ Moomin ” and “ Peanuts ”. Both are characters from comics. “Moomin” was written by Tove Jansson, It was published as novel and comics in Finland. In Japan, it was really popular as animation. The main character is Moomin who is a same name with title. Moomin has white colour and chubby shape. it looks soft, calm and sweet. It is assume His form can be reflected to my character “Nyanco”. “ Nyanco ” also has white colour and a little bit plump shape. “ Peanuts ” was created by Charles M. Schulz. It was syndicated a lot of newspaper in all over the world. I often use as some sources to expression for character motion. In Peanuts comics, These character were moved with all their strength even birds. So when I reach an impasse, I refer to such a comical motion from it.These comics are also good example for product and package design. We can find a lot of their staff in Japan. There is a famous and popular store where named Kiddy Land. Kiddy Land is well-known as one of the representative store in Japanese pop culture. This store are filled in toys and character goods. So we can get a lot of variety character product item. For example, cosmetics, clothes and fabrics. Moomin and Peanuts as well. Both character have really deep-rooted population, there are their cafe, museum and amusement park.

Additionally, I would like to be source that the way of reflected their characters to product design and package design. In Japan, the character industry is one of the most important market in advertisement agency. In Masters Project 2, I design to create some character products from my comic. Accordingly, I need to do package design what is involved to products as well. So as my graduation works, I mention to show comics for physical and digital. Also I consider it was written English and Japanese. At the digital comic work, I speculate to use some animations. It does not just make it fun, but also it can spread expressive style of comic. Thus I require to learn how to move my illustration effectively. At the present moment, I presume to use After Effects. Concerning products and package design, I intend to some fashion items and daily commodities. I consider it is the best way to connect with some scenes from my comic. The reason is It makes more affable to see my characters after reading it. It would be provide a comforting with my selected audience age early twenties or late thirties.

My all works are based on my experience and emotion. As I need to get them from variety of place, people and atmosphere as much as possible. Mainly, I am going to concentrate to describe my standard life in the UK but it is much interesting that put some unusual event in my comic. So now I am planning to go Holland and Berlin on Easter holidays to correct some topics. On the other hand, It is necessary to the culture of comics. So I intended to search some comic history books in the capacity of reading. On e is Paul Gravett and Peter Stanbury (2006), GREAT BRITISH COMICS, durum publish limited and the other is Paul Gravett (2004), Manga Sixty Years of Japanese Comics, Laurence King Publishing Ltd. Literally, the former had written about history of British comics and the latter had written about Japanese comics culture. It is assume that to research both culture of comics. In that, I tried to show my Japanese style comic in the UK.

At the same time, I would like to join competitions as much as I can possible. I consider Japan is my activity base and I am going back to Japan after this MA course. In Japan, normally if I want to live as an illustrator, I have to

Page 8: HARUNA YAMASHITA

win a prize of famous illustration or comic competitions. Another is working at the advertising or character design company. Consequently, I am going to apply for some competitions what suit my art works as soon as it finds. So in my action plan should be included the schedule of competitions and preparing my portfolio for seeking employment.

Second Study planAt the workshop with Robert Nicole, I have got the word that “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one ”. I had to create some illustrations from this word. It made me so confused. Moreover, it was really hard to understand even I found a translation into my mother language from professional translator. Finally, I could not make even one illustration during the workshop. However, I leaded some ideas after while.

Reality is existence but it is unreliable such as fragile. Furthermore it is kind of daydream, so that the idea was connected with my thinking from when I was a child.

It is uncertain about existence of my own. Additively I was consisted by own memory or information from others.

Even among them, I focused the moment when the memory is created. I consider that it is when people shook their emotion significantly. Accordingly, in my situation, I was moved specially I feel the beautifulness of nature. For example, when I feel the warmth of sunshine or when I received the wind,I listen the sound of the rain hit the ground, I saw the green as grass. Therefore I feel such a trueness of nature, I am able to trust my existence. These emotion are come from my childhood environment. I spend time until later teenager in countryside. Besides my school is placed on the hill and I had to pass through the green forest to go there every day. This custom was continuing from five years old to eighteen years old. During long walking to my school, I have no choice to spend time expect just watching green of the forest or to imagine something funny things. I am able to mention that I daydreamed at that time.

Consequently, my concentration was going to find the way of express about daydream after the workshop . Thus I decided to change the study plan of this unit from making comics of my daily life to making books of daydream. Regarding the first study plan about comic,I would like to express about my comical daily life with my original characters. Nevertheless I consider that I am able to create comics even after this unit or this abroad. Accordingly, It is much more important that to express the consideration of my aesthetic feeling of creation before the brightness of this idea has gone. I could define the hardness of making comic story rather than I thought the beginning. However, it was good experience to make comic story that connect to my advance of creation. Additively, it is already my new illustration style specially to express my consideration and feeling freely.

As creation of the daydream in this unit, many women often appear in my illustration. Because women is the biggest motif as expression of my view. As first reason, It concerns cause I am a woman as well. Hence it is easy to empathize for woman and also easy to reflect my emotion or opinion for the women as motif in my art works.

Secondly, it is relate fragile and uncertainly of daydream with subtle of woman specifically. I considered it is possible to connect both features together. Therefore I tried to illustrate them in my works. In particular, when woman’s hair is blew by wind, it remains me such a mirage view where is between the real world and daydream world.

In this way, I set the theme as “wind”. I would like to define the connection with daydream and this real world. I

Page 9: HARUNA YAMASHITA

assume it happened at the birth of impression from beautifulness of nature. It create our memory and meaning of existence. Thus I focused on expression of the wind.

As a reference of motif, Leonard Fujita was also painted many women in his artist life. I centre to his inorganic colour style. it is emphasise the innocence and pureness of woman. In this unit, I refer to this inorganic colour style. It is differ from my radical style so far. Basically, my original style are colourful and cuteness. Nevertheless in this time I would like to advance to control my colour plan to modify the colour pallet. Thus I used monotone colour mainly, besides I painted vivid and bright colour at some points.

On the other hand, I would like to mention about Julian Opie as reference. Opie is known a sculpture, painter, printmaker and installation artist. In particular, I focused his painting of people around1998 to now. His painting feature is minimum of information.People in his paintings are everyone same face. However, we can recognize they are different people. It makes audience to focus attention on the existence of personality of people who are painted.

As minimalism of expression, I also would like to show Miffy as a representative of Dick Bruna. Miffy is a character of a rabbit and the picture books of Miffy are published whole over the world. Miffy and other characters are always drawn as absolutely simple. It is the reason that to make people understand and recognize the object easily. Thus his drawing line is obviously without perplexity. My previously drawing style are messy and rapid hand drawing. Nevertheless after I saw the moving image of drawing of Miffy by Bruna, It is really slowly and carefully hand drawing. It makes changing my drawing concept. Before my drawing concept is express my feeling with speedy drawings to show emotionally. However now I consider that the most important information is able to tell with simplistic drawing rather than emotional drawings.

Appropriately, in this unit I drew all illustration really carefully to express the subtle of women and nature. As one of the way to expression, I avoided the straight line. Beside I drew with the soft line. In this line has an image that like the leaves are swang by the wind or like the misted view in the fog.

Accordingly, I refer them to illustrate women simply in this project. This minimalism of expression is also connected to character design. In fact, as Julian Opie and Dick Bruna’s work are develop to product. For example fashion, fabric and interior. It is able to mention that the simplistic character is consist as icon of an artist as well.

Suggestions:

1, Do not care about the comic style should be European style or Japanese style.

2, Considering about the size of comics.

3, Making some trial pieces of comic.

After Tutorial:

I really cared about my comic style should be European style or Japanese style. Nevertheless he suggested I should

not care about it. I have to forget about format and making new style. This suggestion was really helped for my stuck

feeling.

Besides he also gave me advice that to make some trial pieces of comic. Thus after this tutorial I created trial pieces

of them to define a master piece.

Why I changed the study plan

How I improve my work for hand in

Preparation:

For the tutorial with Hayley, I brought some illustrations of my new project “Living with the wind”.

Also I brought a continuous book as a trial piece.

Suggestions:

1, Consider the composition of illustrations into the book.

2, Consider the consistency of characters.

3, Add some items into illustration which audience feel the existence of wind much more.

After Tutorial:

I realised I have not to consider about the book deeply. Thus I changed the composition of some illustrations. In

addition, I added some items into my illustrations. So I made audience to feel the existence of wind much more easily.

About the consideration of the consistency of women, I think I have already done to make minimal of the expression

of women’s face. Beside, I would like to emphasise the existence of women and common impression of women from

wide range. Thus I consider I do not have to my character to be same person.

Besides this four panel comic style is traditional

Japanese comic style but it is often use even nowadays.

So I tried this style too.

I refer to Moomin comic to character design of my

comic. In particular, Moomin’s shape and funny facial

expression.

Additionally, “Yoshio the cartoonist ” also helped me

to express the character moving expression.

Mainly, I am using Instagram to find some images as

reference for my illustration.

Specially I focused the composition, colouring and

atmosphere of pictures.

For “Living with the wind”, I make to appear a lot of

girls and natures.

For example, I am using as reference their expressive

style of waving hair and surrounded natures.

Page 28: HARUNA YAMASHITA

II tried to show similar atmosphere with reference

pictures.

For example, oppressive, natural and graceful of a girl

or young woman.

“Lemoncake” of my illustration.

From Emily Blincoe (account name @emilyblincoe) and

Laura Egea, I got many ideas of using green items with

people.

Also they are good reference of composition.

These pictures gave me idea not only illustration but

also exhibition of “Living with the wind”. So it might be

many plants and flowers with my illustrations.

Furthermore, I am using to find useful some pop items to

appear on my illustration.

Sam Ushiro (account name @aww.sam) showed her

artworks with vivid colour and pattern background. So

her top pages are full of pop and vivid colouring items at

all.

From her art works and picture, I got some ideas of

how can I make my illustration more pop. It appeared

Pintrest

As much as Instagram, I often use Pintrest for references.

Pinterest can find not only pictures but also they have

many vintage pictures and illustrations of figure.

Moreover, Pintrest is easier than Instagram to specific

images.

Page 31: HARUNA YAMASHITA

So for “Lemon cake” I using Pintrest to collect many

images for illustration.

In this illustration, I set the theme “60’s girl” so I

searched and gathered a lot of images of lemon cake,

60’s woman style.

Additionally, it was kind of exercise to mix a lot of

different type of images in to one illustration.

Conclusion, this illustration made me build up some

skills of gathering images or mixing many images in to

one art work.

I was also able to find some images for practice of “Living

in the wind” works.

At this time, I refer to composition of blank space and

motif of a wreath.

Exhibition

During the travel to Amsterdam at the easter holiday,

I visited Nijntje Museum where is known as Miffy

Museum.

I could watch some films about Dick Bruna who is

author of Miffy.

I had not known about how Miffy is drawn with slowly

and carefully before I watched these films. In these

films, Dick Bruna said “It is the most important that to

draw simply and non-hesitation to show your thinking for

someone.”

So when I was thinking to the “Living with the wind”

works, I had remember these words and the I has

practiced to realise.

In Pick me up festival, I focused on “Aart-Jan Venema”

works.

Firstly, when I saw his works, I felt the freedom from

his illustration. Nevertheless his drawing are really

planned especially the composition and colour. It is my

weak point about the planning of composition and colour.

So I was impressed how he created his artwork. Thus in

this unit, I cared about colour planning more carefully.

For example, I often use a lot of colour in previous

works. However in this project I selected just a some of

vivid colours and the other are monotone.

The nature things are always moved me significantly.

So I has taken many pictures of plants by camera, iPhone

Specially, “Living in the wind” works, it is the

significant that beautifulness of nature. I am going to

are using Instagram. So I can follow their art works and

find new artists easily. In addition, I can show my art

works for many audience randomly with using hashtags.

On Instagram, I have been uploaded much more my

daily life pictures than drawings and illustrations. So I

would like to show my lifestyle for people to understand

how I connect to the life and art works. This is the

reason for posting my ordinary life pictures besides the

illustrations on Instagram.

Mostly, my Instagram audience are not only people

who I have met in real life.
