“Back to the Basics: The Kerygma” by fr. Nicholas mishek Fundamentals. There will always be a need to remember the fundamentals. This is true whether we have doing something
for 1 year or 50 years. We can imagine our favorite teams running drills over and over. Without the foundation of the fundamentals,
we get lost in the finer details and cease being truly effective. This is true of the faith as well. Imagine someone asking you in the
elevator, “What makes Christianity or Catholicism different from anything else?” or “Why should I be Catholic?” Would you know
what to say in that moment? Many times, we know things about Catholicism that are true and beautiful, but we can get lost in all the
information and miss sharing the essential parts of our faith. We miss the core that makes Catholicism so beautiful, we miss the
Kerygma.
Kerygma comes from the Greek work “keryx,” which means herald. If there was important news in the ancient world, like
a victory, the king would send a herald to tell everyone the announcement through a basic headline and this was the herald’s
kerygma. It is an announcement of an event or a fact that impacts the listener. The herald would not just think it applied to him, but
he went with the authority of the king to announce a message that was not his own. Early Christians took this concept and applied to
the Gospel, or “the Good News.” Jesus had commissioned his disciples to be his heralds (Mt 28:1820), and this applies to us as
well. Let’s get back to fundamentals and proclaim the Kerygma to the world.

The reed of God By caryll houselander March 25
th
, the Feast of the Annunciation,
celebrates the wedding of the Holy Spirit
with humanity. Houselander notes that
whenever the Holy Spirit desired to renew
the earth, He chose communion with a
humble creature not the great or power-
ful. This can now happen to any of us but
only because of Our Lady’s fiat (pg. 17.)
God’s love for humanity culminated in the
conception of Christ in the human race.
With Our Lady’s surrender came a New
Heaven and New Earth and the wonder of
this wedding of God to a human child
filled the earth. Of all that God has done,
He emphasizes the power of children
that being is more important than doing.
Jesus teaches this lesson to the apostles
when he proclaims that heaven is full of
children (pg. 18.) Imagine the world wait-
ing for the consent of a child, a young girl
of fourteen years, to bear a Child who re-
deems the world. This consent was not to
do anything but rather receive a gift and to
live her life as
planned marriage to
Joseph. No special
announcements but
instead an ordinary
life with this hidden
event accepted with
total trust in God.

Saint highlight: November 8 - Bl. John Duns Scotus, priest and religiousIt only took 685 years for today’s saint to be beatified after his death! John Duns was a Franciscan priest and friar born
about 1265/66 and died in 1308. He is called Duns Scotus meaning Duns the Scot because he was from Scotland. He was
a philosopher and theologian graduating from Oxford University. He is called “the Subtle Doctor” because of his complex
and nuanced thought. He taught a metaphysical argument for the existence of God through the concepts of cause and ef-
fect. He also advocated for free will by stating that a person cannot stop what the person is doing if there is no free will;
and yet people can stop what they are doing!

He also defended the teaching of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, following St. Anselm of Canterbury’s princi-
ple: “God could do it, it was appropriate, therefore he did it!” In other words, according to Bl. Pope Pius IX, who infalli-
bly defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854: “At the moment of her conception, Mary was preserved
free from the stain of original sin, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ.”

Philosophy is the handmaiden of theology! What this means is that the Church uses philosophy to help us understand what
God supernaturally reveals to us by using our natural reasoning ability, which God gave to us! We are not fideists, mean-
ing, all we do is believe blindly and not think. Nor are we rationalists, meaning, all we do is use our own unaided reason as the ultimate basis of truth
or falsehood and thus not believe. We believe and we think! One is a supernatural gift, faith, and the other is a natural gift, reason. By using both we
can share what we believe in a rational manner. Bl. Duns Scotus, pray for us!
If you want to read more about the saints, go to Mr. Mueting’s Saint Weblog at mrmuetingsaints.blogspot.com.
Have you packed a shoe box today? Remember: Operation Christ-
mas Child shoe boxes are due to the Par-
ish Office or Visitor’s Center at church

a Shoebox Online”. Simply Google

“For I know the plans I have for you,
‘declares the Lord,’ plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
The above Bible verse is so appropriate
for two special events that take place this
week….Veteran’s Day and National
Vocations Awareness Week.
On Thursday, November 11th
, we honor
those brave men and women who fought
for the freedom of our great country by
celebrating Veteran’s Day. This annual
observance began in the armistice that
ended World War I hostilities in 1918. The
armistice between the Allied nations and
Germany went into effect on the eleventh
hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh
month. President Woodrow Wilson
proclaimed November 11th
as “Armistice
Day”, In 1954, Congress passed legislation
that renamed the federal holiday “Veteran’s
Day” in recognition of the service of all
U.S. wars. While we are honoring our
veteran’s on Thursday, this week,
November 7th
through November 13th
, is
also National Vocation Awareness Week.
This is an annual weeklong celebration of
the Catholic Church in the United States
dedicated to promoting vocations to the
priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life
through prayer and education. It is a time
for us to renew our prayers and support for
those who are considering one of these
particular vocations.
Both of these events coincide so well
together. First of all, whether a person
volunteers to serve in the military or
chooses a vocation, it is a calling by our
Heavenly Father. God has a plan for each
and every one of us, before we were even
born.
Next, both “callings” are led by Jesus.
He protects our men and women during the
challenges that come from serving in the
military. When a person chooses a
vocation, he or she is given the guidance of
our Heavenly Father to pursue the work for
Him.
Finally, both professions give hope and
a future. The veterans service have given
all of us hope for a safe and free future for
us and our children. Those who have
chosen a vocation give all of us hope of
Heaven when we leave our earthly home.

Freshmen at Bergan attend retreat On Friday, October 29
th
, freshmen youth
who attend Bergan were able to leave the
classroom and spend the day at Camp Cal-
vin Crest. With the assistance of Bergan’s
Peer Ministers, the youth spent time in
prayer, heard some inspirational talks and
even braved the “high ropes”.
May we continue to pray for these youth
as they guided with their journey with our
loving Heavenly Father.

Faith formation Featured class - 3rd grade
Meet our 3rd

year, our youth are
blessed to have
Christine Morse and
Danika Kerin as their
catechists. They also
are blessed to have Kris Olson volunteer as their Prayer Pal.
During 3rd
Grade, our youth are taught the importance of Confession, Communion
and the Mass. The theme is God’s plan of salvation, from creation to the Incarnation
and Redemption to the birth of the Church at Pentecost and our life in the Church.
Please continue to keep these youth and their teachers in your prayers.

Jesus gets right to the point we are all called to give money to support
the mission of the Church, regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too
small or insignificant! Giving money to support the mission of our local
parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish
ministries. When you make a financial offering, is it from your “first
fruits” or from what is “left over”?
Dan Koenig, archbishop bergan principal This month of November we are called to give thanks. We at Bergan are thankful for the gen-
erations of people who have sacrificed to allow what was St. Patrick's School and now is Arch-
bishop Bergan Catholic School to exist. Archbishop Bergan Catholic School today consists of
three distinct educational programs building discipleship through the 475 students that we
serve. The future of the Catholic Church relies on Catholic Education in Catholic Schools. If
we let the Catholic Schools of our communities fail, we are terminating the future of the Cath-
olic Church as well. We all need Catholic Schools to succeed so that our children, grandchil-
dren and great grandchildren can carry on the faith long after we are gone. Ask yourself this
question… How could our parish properly educate our students to live their faithdailyif Arch-
bishop Bergan Catholic School did not exist? In order to be sure that our catholic schools re-
main strong and successful I am asking you as parishioners to do three things. 1) Please pray
for the success of Archbishop Bergan Catholic in your daily prayers. 2) Prayerfully consider
financially supporting Saint Patrick Parish or Archbishop Bergan Catholic School by signing
up for We Share. 3) Continue to expand your knowledge of the positive impact that Arch-
bishop Bergan is having on the community by learning about our school from resources like
our websitewww.berganknights.orgThank you for your continued support of Archbishop
Bergan Catholic School!

Adoration Our first week of the parish’s Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament went very well.
We had a number of adorers request substi-
tutes and they were very accepting in taking
another’s hour in front of the Blessed Sac-
rament. As of this bulletin, we are having
adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament Monday through
Friday, 4:00 am thru 11:00 pm and on Sunday, 1:00 pm
through 11:00 pm, which is all being done by the working of
the Holy Spirit in our parishioners’ hearts and souls. More
adorers are needed for one person hours and overnight hours.
Just a reminder with the weather beginning to change, if
the schools are closed, all parish functions will be cancelled.
This includes Adoration is front of the Blessed Sacrament.
With the holidays coming up and families wanting to be
together, we will NOT have the Blessed Sacrament exposed
November 25 through November 28. We will expose the
Blessed Sacrament at 4:00 am on November 29th. We will
also NOT expose the Blessed Sacrament from December 24
January 2. We will expose the Blessed Sacrament again at
4:00 am on January 3.
Thank you to all our adorers who take one hour out of their
busy lives to spend with Jesus, and thank Him for the many
gifts he has given to us all.
