Mrs. Thompson’s Pre K News
Welcome to a new year in Pre K!! We hope you enjoy reading our section in the newsletter this year!!
Many students attended our first Community Night that was for Grandparents. They had fun watching a clip
from the movie “Up” and then went to station to station to make photo frames, handprint projects and much
more.
We welcome to school our new Principal/Superintendent Dr. Guenther! We had Western Day in his honor.
Here we had our picture taken with him. Ya-hoo!!

Art room news
Art classes are off to an amazing start at Weston! Students K-12 began the
year by creating a collaborative mural inspired by quilt maker Tula Pink. Each
student designed a diamond, which were then displayed together in an
artwork we titled “Shine Bright.” Stretching down the hall, students are still
continuing to add pieces to this colorful masterpiece.
Additionally, we now have two art rooms for the Elm/MS
and HS levels. You can find the art hall immediately to
the right from the Elementary entrance. Stop by and
see the amazing artwork Weston students are creating!
Collaborative Mural
What’s Happening? Kindergarten Artists have been learning all about color
groups and mixing and are in the process of creating an
art book. Each page of their book so far is a project
they’ve created while applying newly learned art skills.
1st Grade Artists have been reviewing warm and cool
colors as well as pattern, and are working on warm/
cool hand paintings with wax resists.
2nd Grade Artists have learned all about emotion in art,
and how colors and lines can signify moods and feelings.
They are working on emotion watercolors that show an
emotion of their choice.
3rd Grade Artists are learning all about the artist
Picasso and his Cubism artwork. They have created
portraits inspired by his style.
4th Grade Artists are getting wild with dragons! They
designed dragon eyes and learned blending and shading
techniques with colored pencils.
5th Grade Artists have been immersed in the world of
Pop Art,, and drew inspiration from the famous artist
Roy Lichtenstein for self portraits and paper weaving.

South West Technical College Certificates
This summer Dylan Stiemke and Quintin Peasall received Advanced standing certificates from Southwest Technical College. Both students successfully completed the Welding 2 class with B’s or higher in the course as well as passing the bend test held at SWTC. Students who earn the advanced standing certificate are able to apply the credit toward their technical college degree. Weston offers many opportunities for students to earn college credit while in High School. If interested talk with your teachers about these opportunities.
Tech Ed News
Tiny Intruder By Erich Hughes
Mondays in the science
department are always pretty
exciting because we're always
hoping to find a leftover experiment tucked away in the sinks in
the rear of the science rooms. This Monday unfortunately
produced no unintended slime molds and little excitement in the
way of experimentation gone awry. I had a fairly uneventful
morning until my phone rang 3rd hour and our secretary's
normally relaxed tone had taken on a sense of urgency through
the receiver. "Get. Up. Here. Now! There is A SNAKE in the
hallway!" By the time I got to the office Cody N. had already
saved the day and secured the snake in a small box. A box so
small I wondered if it was only a snake's head. Upon returning to
the science room I opened the box and saw one of the smallest
Eastern Milksnakes I had ever seen. Measuring in at a whopping 7
inches (about the size of a night crawler worm), it has continued
to be one of the science department's most entertaining specimens and has gotten used to her new accommodations
in a small aquarium on my desk. We will be releasing it back into the wild soon.

COUNSELOR CORNER
Senior Year— Fast and Furious!
Seniors are already making plans for post high school graduation. Applications for University and Technical
Colleges should be completed as soon as possible. Technical Colleges such as SWTC and Madison Colleges
have openings in specific programs but will fill up as time progresses. Waiting lists will develop in programs
and seniors need to apply. University applications should be completed soon and I have given all seniors a
date of October 15 as a preferred date of application. The University of Wisconsin system opened its
application date as of September 1, 2017. I have met with the senior class and given packets of instructions
for their senior year. Seniors can focus on scholarships once they have applied to colleges. All juniors and
seniors attended the WEF (Wisconsin Education Fair) on September 29, 2017. Over 80 colleges were in
attendance at the Fair. Students received information on the TIP grant for low income families as well as
other college and scholarship information. A Financial Aid Night will be held on November 2, 2017 at UW-
Richland Center. More information will be provided to seniors regarding attending the Financial Aid Night
and completing the FAFSA for those seniors wishing to apply for grants and scholarships provided by the
government via the FAFSA for Technical College and Universities.
Academic and Career Planning-ACP!
All middle and high school students are working on their Academic and Career Plan. ACP, is a student-
driven, adult and community supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique
and information-based vision for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career
exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. The ACP is a 4 part process of
KNOW, EXPLORE, PLAN, and GO which students develop through middle school and high school. Career
planning is an integral part of student success at Weston School District.
The School District of Weston provides students with the opportunity to participate in Youth
Apprenticeships, School to Work, and Job Shadowing programs. Weston utilizes career awareness in all
classes including Technical Education, Agriculture, and Business Education program. Every other year
Weston holds a career fair. Sophomore students are required to enroll in a Career’s course as part of their
graduation requirement. Career Cruising is the online career exploration program that we use with all 6-12
grade students.
PSAT TEST
PSAT Test to be held on October 11, 2017. Interested juniors have the option of taking the PSAT test from
8:30-11:30 am on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Weston High School. The Preliminary Scholastic
Achievement Test enables junior students to compete for scholarship money as well as practice for the SAT
and ACT tests given later in the junior year. Students were give practice tests to prepare for the PSAT Test.
