Dear Harwood Families,

Happy Spring to all! It seems as through the year just started and here we are with the month of May upon us. The entire staff at Harwood is tremendously proud of your children’s efforts and progress they have made as they worked to master their learning targets across the curriculum. We extend a huge thank you for your support and for giving us this opportunity to educate your children and entrusting them to us daily. Our one last request is that you support our efforts to remain focused and remain engaged until the very end; keeping structure and routines at home is essential to your child’s learning here at school.

We have exciting activities in the month of May and June that mark the end of the school year and create lasting memories for the kids. I encourage you to participate and provide the volun-teer support that may be needed and enjoy the activities with your child. If you have not done so already, please be sure and fill out a background check form if you plan on attending any field trips as a chaperone.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment our PTO has had throughout the year to all of the kids here in the community. They have worked to foster and build relationships with families and provide activities outside the school that have been fun! Please consider join-ing us on May 9 for our monthly meeting at 6:30 PM in the Media Center.

This newsletter is our final publication for the 2017-2018 school year and it is amazing to think of all that has happened since the year began. It has been an amazing year of growth for our students, staff and community as we continue on the path of academic excellence. I thank each of you for providing us the opportunity to help your child learn and grow and hope to see all of our students in grades kindergarten through fourth grade back again next year! Best of luck to our 5th grade families who will not be returning next school year.

Until next year….WE ARE HARWOOD…WHERE IT IS GREAT TO BE A HAWK!

Mrs. Tremmel

SEVERE WEATHER

Tornado Watch: Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible.

Harwood’s Response: Keep weather radio on so we are posted of situation. Staff is notified so they

are prepared if situation worsens.

Tornado Warning: Tornado has actually been reported in the “watch” area.

Harwood’s Response: Shelter alarm is given. Students and all staff proceed to sheltered area.

Releasing Students: Do not come to school during a tornado warning.

Take shelter. Students are not to be released when they are taking shelter during a tornado warn-

ing. Once the warning is cancelled and everything is back to normal, a student may be released.

Also, we cannot release a student to another parent unless that parent’s name is on the emergency

card. Even though a parent is part of the car pool, we cannot release a child to him/her if his/her

name is not on the emergency card.

Proper Dress/Proper Attitude

Research has shown that the way children dress for school reflects their attitude toward

learning. Wearing play clothes reflects an attitude towards play. Wearing school clothes encour-

ages an attitude towards learning. We ask you to take this into consideration when selecting the

clothing your child will wear to school. Clothing that is not acceptable includes: mid-thigh or short

shorts, short skirts/skorts, bicycle shorts, tank tops, and crop tops that expose bare midriffs and

beach attire. T-shirts with inappropriate logos and/or sayings also are not acceptable. Shorts and

sandals worn at outdoor recess can be a danger. Students often fall and scrape their legs espe-

cially the knees.

On days of unseasonable heat , the children will be allowed to wear, for their comfort, near

knee length shorts, skorts, and culottes, no sandals or flip-flops.

Children coming to school with inappropriate dress will be asked to call home for a change of

clothing. This is for the safety of your child and a distraction free learning environment for all stu-

dents.
