Vlaardingerbroek we are indeed fortunate to have such quality teachers join us. 2013 has started well, a solid foundation for a successful year. It has been a very busy first few weeks as teachers and students get into the routines required for successful learning goals for 2013. These are: 1. To maintain or improve on 2012 NCEA level of achievement at Levels 1, 2 and 3 and University Entrance. 2. Students in Years 9 and 10 progress one full curriculum level in each learning area. 3. Headmaster’s Comments: Welcome to the 2013 school year, and a special welcome to the students new to our school, including the 200 Year 9 students. A successful school is based on quality teachers and I welcome the new staff to our school – Mr A. Faioso, Mr D. Harper and Mr C. Vlaardingerbroek – we are indeed fortunate to have such quality teachers join us. 2013 has started well, a solid foundation for a successful year. It has been a very busy first few weeks as teachers and students get

and University Entrance. 2. Students in Years 9 and 10 progress one full curriculum level in each learning

area. 3. Maori and Pacific Island achievement is the same as school wide goals. 4. To increase merit and excellence endorsements to the national mean. 5. An effective teaching profile „The Akina‟ way is evident in every teacher‟s lesson.

Over recent years Hastings Boys’ High School has established itself as a leading school in boys’ education. First day School opened with a roll of 780 on the first day – a big increase on other years. Year 9 boys looked very smart and proud in their new uniforms. It did not take long for the staff to get the boys organised and down to work.

New Staff Mr Vlaardingerbroek – teacher of Art Mr Vlaardingerbroek is of Maori Samoan and Dutch decent. He completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts at Northtech and Emilly Carr University of Art in Vancouver. For the past five years he has been teaching at Whangarei Boys‟ High School. He would like to develop and build a „thriving Art Department‟ with Art Design and Photography as sub-fields.

Mr Harper – Physical Education Came to us from Tauranga Boys‟ College where he spent a year teaching. Mr Harper is very excited and optimistic about this year, learning and adding to the already high reputation at Hastings Boys‟ High School and the Physical Education Department. Co-curricular is a massive interest of Mr Harper; mainly Cricket and Rugby.

Mr Faioso – Pasifika and Digital Technology and Digital Art

Mr Faioso was born and raised in Hastings. He is an „Old Boy‟ of the school and studied at Victoria University where he completed a BA in Information Systems and Samoan Studies. He moved back home and worked as a teacher aide. Staff at HBHS inspired and encouraged him to be a teacher and he completed his Diploma of Teaching with Massey University in 2012. Mr Faioso‟s hobbies are designing digital art and getting in the wrestling ring. He has been teaching since the beginning of the term and says his experiences have been excellent. Mr Faioso thinks the school is awesome

with a great staff.

School subsidised Sports Trips

- Important Message At its December meeting the Hastings Boys‟ High School Board of Trustees passed a motion “that students who have not paid school fees will not qualify for a subsidy towards sports trips. Agreed” The school is fortunate that the Board of Trustees offers a subsidy for every sporting trip and event. This is possible by the school donation that is paid by parents and caregivers. However, the spiralling costs now mean that the subsidy is only available to those families who pay into this fund. If the $95.00 per year donation is paid the trip will be heavily subsidised, but if not paid the full cost of the trip will be charged to the family. In cases of hardship an application to the Headmaster can be made.

Head Prefects Congratulations to those senior students who have been chosen as our leaders for 2013. They are as follows:

Whole school academic focus The increased whole school roll has made for an increased focus on confirming appropriate option choices for all students from Years 9 to 13. All Deans have responded and worked very hard to ensure that a very smooth start to the school year has occurred. Uniform standards and attendance across all year levels have been impressive overall. All students in conjunction with their form teachers are currently involved in personal goal-setting targets for 2013, within the PACE programme. These goals are inclusive of the academic, co-curricular, pastoral areas of school life. Pastoral support programmes are in place for every year level throughout the school.

Year 9 BBQs The turnout of students and their families to our annual Year 9 barbecues was once again excellent. This just reiterates the importance of such an event where families have an opportunity to meet and talk with Senior Management, the Year 9 Dean and their son‟s Form Teacher. The Form Teachers have done an outstanding job in

contacting parents of boys in their form classes and it was a good time to put a face to a name. It was also an opportunity to outline the importance of the home environment with regard to homework and consistent reading time. Families were very supportive of these initiatives and agreed that whilst it is an everyday part of school life, it must be encouraged and structured at home. Thanks must go to the Form Teachers for their help with the organisation and the prefects who did a fantastic job cooking the food and making the week of barbecues such a success. Mr J. Bird, Year 9 Dean

Dads and Lads Breakfast On Tuesday, 26th February we held our annual Dads and Lads breakfast at the RSA in Hastings. Again, there was a huge turnout and an opportunity to once again meet the family members of our students. Mr Sturch started proceedings by reiterating to families the importance of goal setting, reading, participation in a variety of activities and respect for other people. He also emphasised the importance of the family being involved with the son‟s education. Mr Sturch gave out some tips for a successful Year 9: 1. Hang out with smart friends, 2. Have a schedule, 3. Challenge yourself, 4. Play a team sport, 5. Ask when you don‟t understand, 6. Have a goal and a plan,

Hobbit Movie On the 21st February 9Pa and 9Hi went to the Hastings Cinema to view The Hobbit „An Unexpected Journey‟ as part of our English studies. As we are studying The Hobbit it was a great opportunity to help us understand the book. My favourite part was when Bilbo is on the tree and Thorin is getting mauled by a warg. Bilbo then got up and tackled an orc and killed him. I also enjoyed the ending when the dragon woke up underneath the gold and it zooms into the dragon‟s eye as it opens. It‟s a huge eye that looks fearsome. I like these parts because it shows Bilbo gaining courage and the ending shows mystery behind it and it gives a

base for the second movie. The movie helped me understand the book more although some things in the movie are different to the book.

Uniform – second hand If anybody has second hand uniform available – could you please take it to the school office and we will endeavour to sell it for you.

Citizenship Diploma for Nicholas Rogers Rehn

At our first school assembly Nicholas was awarded a diploma for 30 hours of volunteering in Kirkpatrick House helping an elderly blind lady do the daily crossword and spending time with her. He was also willing to assist in any way that he could by giving out lunch and collecting dishes at the House. Congratulations Nicholas.

SADD (Students against drunk drivers) Two Year 13 students (Matt Bird and Jayden O‟Connor) recently attended the regional conference held by the co-ordinator of the Central North Island region. Both students enjoyed the occasion and the experience of working together with a number of students from a variety of Hawke‟s Bay schools. These are several future initiatives in the pipeline to focus Hastings Boys‟ High School students on the dangers and threats that drunk drivers pose on our roads. It is also a possibility that Matt and Jayden could also attend the National SADD conference later in the school year.

Cambridge University Scholars The school congratulates theses students on their recent successes: 9 boys achieved „A‟ passes in Geography and one of these attained an „A+‟. There were also 7 „A‟ passes in Mathematics – achievements to be well proud of.

University of Otago “Hands on Science

2013” During The week of Monday 14th January to Friday 18th January we joined about 250 other students from all over New Zealand to attend the Hands On Science Camp 2013 held in Dunedin. Without knowing what was in store for us we set off on Sunday to Dunedin from Napier with stopovers in both Wellington and Christchurch. After a few bumpy flights and upon landing in Dunedin we were met by the smiling faces of the Hands On Science “Redshirts” who transported us to what would be our home for the next week, Arana College at Otago University. We were lucky to be able to do the project we had chosen which was Geology. During the week we went on field trips around the Dunedin Area to examine what types of rock were found there, we also drilled a borehole and collected samples to determine the strength and liquefaction potential of our Project Leader‟s property. We found that the soil of our Project Leader‟s property was relatively weak and was not the best place to build a house! As well as our projects we also were given randomly chosen “Science Snacks” which gave us the opportunity to experience different departments of science that we would not have normally chosen. These included things like Chemistry, Botany, Information Science, Physical Education and Dunedin Water.

During the week there were also many evening activities. On Sunday it was “Campus Capers” this was a giant treasure hunt throughout the University Campus, which gave us all a chance to get our bearings and learn our way around the campus. Monday was meant to be the North Ground Games but this was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather. Tuesday saw us compete in a Quiz held in Arana College dining hall, with topics ranging from Science to Movies. Wednesday was the Top Team Challenge which saw each floor race each other around the

massive obstacle course and included many activities such as the army crawl and a jellybean hunt. Thursday was our final night at Hands On Science and everyone was dressed up to attend the Dance/Games evening held at Forsyth Bar Stadium. The theme for the night was “Space – The Final Frontier” which saw costumes ranging from aliens to spacemen and lots of tinfoil! We got the chance to walk the steepest street in the World - Baldwin Street. Friday saw the final presentation of each project to the rest of the Hands On Science group, as well as the bitter sweet farewells as everybody went home to their respective parts of the country. This experience at Hands On Science 2013 has given us a taste of what university is like and has opened our eyes to many facets of science that we had no idea even existed. We have been able to see Otago University which otherwise wouldn‟t have happened. We got the opportunity to meet students from all over New Zealand and we have been taken outside our “Comfort zone”. This was a once in a lifetime experience and we would like to thank the Freemasons Student Travel Award (FREESTA) for their generous help which helped us to attend Hands On Science 2013. We encourage our fellow students to take this opportunity if it is offered to them. Report by Mitchell Bradley & Sam Carter

Leaders Camp – January at National Park On the 18th of January the future Prefects of 2013 left school at 7am to begin the Leadership Camp in Tongariro National Park starting with the conquering of the Tongariro River. After navigating the white water rapids, the guides permitted us to jump off the cliff face overhanging the river. Waven Hapi producing the biggest bomb ever recorded. Staying in the East Coast Ski Lodge Mr Sturch and Mr Pierce took us down to the local school in National Park for team building exercises, some shone while others cracked under pressure. A game of touch was later held with Jack Wiggins showing his professional experience on the field. Many table tennis tournaments were held at the lodge with Campbell Whitworth being the best player. With the Tongariro Crossing closed to public, the team left for the Tama Lakes walk, a gruelling 21km hike. A great experience, the highlight being taking a swim in the freezing plunge pool of the Taranaki Falls. After stopping at Tokaanu Hot Pools to soothe the aching bodies, the team headed back to National Park. There we talked as a group about our individual goals for the year and our plans for the future. This was followed by a team quiz, with Alex Withington leading his side to victory. The following morning the team left for home. We stopped in Waiouru to visit the Army Museum and were taken on a guided tour to see the Upham Medals. It was a moving experience, watching the names flash up on the screen, of the men who had died for our country. After a green-gilled experience on the Gentle Annie, we stopped at the Springvale Suspension Bridge for another swim, then back to sunny Hawke‟s Bay .A thank you on behalf of the Prefects to all those who made the trip possible.

Sports Department With 2012 being one of our most successful years on the sporting field we have come to the conclusion that we are on the right track to reaching our goal of being a competitive school on the sports field. Over the last couple of years we have established a Sports Council which meets once a term. The objective of the Council is to share ideas on what has worked for individual codes and what hasn‟t and whether or not these are transferable to the other codes to help them reach their goals. The Sports Academies have also helped with the growing numbers in the junior school over the past few years. This Programme is a very important component to our success. This year the Sports Dept will have a Facebook page which will have up to date weekly draws and results. This we feel is the best way to communicate to the students and community of our school. Even more so then our school website – www.hastingsboyshighschool.

Canoe Polo

Hastings Boys’ High School take out Junior and Senior HB Canoe Polo Championships

Over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of March the Hawke‟s Bay Secondary School Canoe Polo Championships were held at the Hastings Aquatic Centre. Our top junior team went through their pool undefeated, beating Havelock High 7–3, Karamu High 3–2 and Napier Boys‟ High School 6-2. This meant that they qualified as top seed for the semi finals. Although the team had been playing well at this stage, they had been getting off to slow starts which put them under some pressure. Most second half performances had been dominant however, so going into the semi final against St John‟s the aim was to start the way the team had been finishing. They didn‟t disappoint, and put on a dominant display to win 5 -1. The final put us up against a very competitive Karamu High School team that had pushed us in pool play. The game proved to be a very physical contest where Karamu had the majority of the possession, but our defence had control throughout and turn over ball was turned into goals at the other end, the final result being 4 – 0. This meant that the side defended their title from 2012. The whole team played with a great attitude, the standout players being Tane Hohipa who was clinical on attack and captain Shakquan Butler Toko who was formidable in the defensive line. Bradley Mosen, Taylor Walbank and Lachlan Miller were all strong in their respective roles on defence and attack. Our two year 9 players, Devon Flanders and Jackson Ralph improved immensely as the tournament progressed and have become very important members of the team. Our top senior team went into the tournament with high hopes. The basis of this team has been together for a number of years now, and has turned into a very strong and competitive team to play against. The boys won their pool games against Lindisfarne 15 – 1, Napier Boys 10 – 0, Taradale 3 – 2 and Havelock North High 5 – 2, which resulted in the team being placed top in their pool. The semi final was played against the Napier Boys‟ High School‟s 1st team who put us under pressure in the first half. Once again though, our structured defence held them out and we managed to make the most of our attacking opportunities to run away in the second half with a 3 – 1 win. This put us in the final against St John‟s. Two stunning Sam Carter goals in the first half took the pressure off early and the team took control for the rest of the game, coming out victors 4 -0 to win the Senior Open title for the first time. All players in the team are having an impact when they play. Ryan Warren is proving to be an outstanding leader and he has been ably supported by Reuben Papuni, who has the ability to control the defensive line making this a very difficult team to score against. Harry Skelton created multiple turnovers throughout the tournament while Kaleb Jones, Liam Warren and AJ Bowden all have a marked impact at both ends of the pool. Both teams will be competing at the Nationals later this month

Interschool Relay Athletics Meeting Hastings Boys' High School took small but very enthusiastic team to the Year 9 / Year 10 combined interschool relay athletics meeting recently held at the Regional Sports Park. The event was really well attended by schools and really well run. The boys in all of the teams did really well, particularly given that we hadn't had time to grade the boys to ensure we had the strongest possible team combinations. We may also be able to unearth some more talent at School Athletics Sports Day which will strengthen the junior team again for the East Coast Championships. Thanks should go to Mr Hill and Mr Hanks for helping with the organisation of the team before the event and on the day. Thanks also to Sports Captain Alex Withington as well as prefects Jonty Tong and Sam Carter who ran the discus event all evening. Highlights were:

First Eleven Cricket - Super 8 Tournament

Report The Hastings Boys‟ High School First Eleven cricket team headed away on Sunday 27th January to the annual Super 8 Cricket competition. The competition, run across several codes over the year, is contested by some of the New Zealand‟s top boys‟ schools. Hastings played Tauranga Boys‟ College on the first day. Tauranga chose to bat first on what looked to be a batsmen‟s paradise. After losing their two openers early

on B.Musgrave and G.Wallace (Tauranga Boys) put on 162 for the third wicket.

Tauranga Boys‟ College found their way to 228 setting Hastings Boys‟ a target of 229 to win the game. Jacob Henry was the pick of the bowlers with 3-43 off 9 overs. Hastings got off to a good start with an opening partnership of 45. The top order all chipped in and a brilliant knock by Jake Harvey (70*) saw that Hastings Boys‟ High School got to the target with two overs to spare and three wickets in hand. The second day was an old grudge match against local rivals Napier Boys‟ High School. Napier batted first and scored 173 off 50 overs thanks to a fight back from the middle order after being 18 for 3. Hastings were on the back foot early as they lost Captain Alex Withington with the score 17 for 1. The other opener James Field continued to show good form and made 37. The stage was set for another brilliant innings full of substance from Jake Harvey (60*). This saw Hastings Boys‟ cruise to victory in the 40th over with 6 wickets in hand. This was a great result for Hastings Boys‟ who now faced a semi final against Palmerston North Boys‟ High School. Palmerston North BHS have won more Super 8 Cricket titles than any other school and playing them on their home pitch would be a tough task. Hastings Boys‟ High School bowled first. Again the team bowled and fielded extremely well. This led to constant wicket intervals restricting the hosts to 169 all out with James Field 3-13 off four overs and Jarrod McLeod 3-34 off 10 overs. In the run chase Hastings Boys‟ lost regular wickets and partnerships were few and far between. Jake Harvey again batted well for 34 and Thomas Sturch finished with 40 not out. Hastings finished agonizingly close being bowled out for 163, 7 runs away from victory and a spot in the Super 8 Cricket Tournament final. The last game was a play off for third and fourth against a strong Gisborne Boys‟ High School team. For the fourth day in a row Hastings Boys‟ were bowling first and Gisborne Boys‟ batting performance reflected the flatness of the track. Gisborne made 230 all out with Jarrod McLeod picking up 5 for 58 off 10 overs. Hastings run chase lost all momentum when they had three players given out lbw in one over. The tail order came together and got the score to 190 off the 50 overs. Hastings Boys‟ finished in fourth place and they will take confidence into their Gillette Cup campaign. Napier Boys‟ High School lost their final game against New Plymouth to finish in sixth place.

Alex Withington HBHS 1st XI Cricket Captain

Gisborne Cricket Exchange The 1st XI and Colts Cricket sides went to Gisborne for their traditional matches vs Gisborne Boys‟ High School. The 1st XI had a loss just missing out on a draw being all bowled out with only 10 balls left in the second day of a two-day match.
