HASTINGS HERO

Congratulations to Audrey Greenhorn (5/6S) who was named

our Hastings Hero for Term 3. Audrey’s citation reads …

Earlier this year, Audrey spent three nights staying with her

grandmother became unwell and an ambulance was called. Audrey’s

grandmother lives in a rural location and at 1am, in the middle of

winter, Audrey had to go out and flash the car headlights so the ambulance could locate them. After

assessment they deemed her OK to remain at home but six hours later the ambulance was again called and

took her grandmother to hospital. Audrey got to ride in the Ambulance as well and when they got to the

hospital she gave hospital staff the next of kin details and phone numbers. Remaining calm, Audrey stayed

with her grandma ensuring she was OK and kept family members updated on her condition until they

arrived. Audrey showed great maturity in coping with her grandmother being unwell and doing what was

PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE

Last Friday Hastings Opinionators competed against Port Macquarie Public School in the Premier’s

Debating Challenge. The topic for the debate was “that we should ban misbehaving popstars from

performing in Australia”. Hastings Opinionators were the affirmative.

Congratulations to our team, Frederik Morris, Axel Lindeman, Audrey Greenhorn & Lily Maqueda, who

won the debate and are now in the North Coast Regional semi-finals. A special thank you to Samuel

Reniers who is the team reserve. He prepares with the team leading up to each competition and

attends each debate, ready to stand-in if required.

PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE

Congratulations to Stephanie Dun and Ebony Walters (Stage 2) and Matilda Stewart & Kaden Knox-

Sheen (Stage 3) who represented our school at the Regional Finals of the Premier’s Spelling Bee in

Forster on Monday. All students did extremely well and are a credit to themselves for getting to this

level. In the Stage 3 division, both Kaden & Matilda made it to the final five before Kaden was

stumped by ‘precursor' from the unseen list. Matilda continued on and won the final correctly

spelling ‘capricious’. Matilda will now participate at the State Finals in Sydney on Wednesday, 8th

November.

BREAK A LEG

Wishing our dance groups the best of Hastings luck as they participate in the Port Macquarie &

District Dance Eisteddfod next Thursday at the Glasshouse. Please be on time meeting teachers at

the Stage Door and parents are asked to be prompt in picking up their child/ren at the end of their

session. Costumes should be returned to school for any Term 4 performances. Break a leg, boys

and girls!

BACKING TRACK COMPETITION

The final date to enter a backing track for the school song will be Wednesday, 20th September. The

track must be produced on Garage Band and be at a speed of 100 beats per minute so it fits under

the current school song.

Entries to be emailed to Mr Gornall at [email protected] by 11:00am on the

Wednesday. Mr Gornall and Mrs Starr will decide on the winning entry by Friday, 22nd September.

OPERATION ART

Operation Art is an

initiative of The

Children’s Hospital at

Westmead in association

with the New South

Wales Department of

Education.

This year, four students from our school (James Cockshutt, Lily Maqueda, Josie Taylor and Naomi

Harris) had their artworks accepted into an exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park showcasing 800

artworks from students from K-12 in NSW schools. Of these artworks 150 receive special

recognition. James' artwork, 'My Dog, Macca' will be one of 12 on display in the offices of ANTSO

(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) which is a sponsor of Operation Art.

After 12 months his artwork will then be placed in a children's ward at a regional hospital. This is a

particularly meaningful achievement for James as his family spent many months at Westmead

whilst his sister was undergoing treatment for leukaemia. James and Lily ('Senorita, Big Eyes')

both received a 'Paw Pick' which means they become part of a teacher's package.
