ALake Odessa resident who grew up on a farm in Carlton Townshipwill receive nine military medals, 67 years after he hung up hisU.S. Army uniform at the close of World War II. When Stan
Strickland was making pre-planned funeral arrangements recently, thefuneral home representative learned that Strickland had never received themedals he earned while serving in Europe. That prompted an effort to seethat Strickland would receive his due honor. A special ceremony will beheld today, May 26, at 2 p.m. at the Lake Odessa Area Historical SocietyFreight House Museum. Sen. Judy Emmons, State Rep. Mike Callton andLt. Col. Jason Awadi will award the long-overdue medals and join familyand friends to honor Strickland for his service to the nation. MEMORIAL DAY, MONDAY, MAY 28, 2012Since the Civil War, Memorial Day has been celebrated as an occasion for honor-ing those who have served our country in past wars, both those who survived and, especially, those who did not and gave their lives to protect our freedoms. Sadly, again this year, we have hundreds of thousands of American Soldiers in harm’s wayaround the world and they must be in our thoughts and prayers as we pay tributeon this day. In whatever way you choose to observe Memorial Day, by attendingchurch services, by visiting and/or placing flowers at a veteran’s gravesite, by thank-ing a veteran that you know personally (a simple handshake will do), you can besure that your efforts are appreciated by those you honor and their families. A verymeaningful way to celebrate, both for you and for our veterans, is to attend and/orparticipate in one of the many Memorial Day Parades or observances in our area. The annual Hastings Memorial Day Parade (sponsored by the Hastings AmericanLegion Post) changes its route this year due to the street construction in town, beginning at 9:30am from the corner of State Street & Hanover and marchingthrough Downtown Hastings with a ceremony at the Barry County Courthouse. I have never been able to think of the day as one ofmourning; I have never quite been able to feel thathalf-masted flags were appropriate on DecorationDay. I have rather felt that the flag should be at thepeak, because those whose dying we commemoraterejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it.We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphantcommemoration of what they did.~ Benjamin Harrison

To Our Valued Community:As we get ready for the official start of summer, more than seasonal transitions await us on the horizon. The state is currently seeking approval from theCenters for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding a plan to provide services to those dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid services. That planwill improve services, ensuring mental health and physical health services are more closely coordinated. Treatment of the whole person is the focus. Finaldetails of the plan remain to be seen, but we will strive to continue to provide the same quality services to which our clients have become accustomed.
We continue to work with our community partners to ensure that Barry County residents have a wide variety of services available in locations that areconvenient and accessible. We value this community. It is rich with support and caring for the individuals we serve.
I look forward to what lies ahead as we transition our services to meet new laws and requirements. I appreciate the community’s support and encour-agement as we continue on our journey.

Jail Diversion continues to be strong in Barry County
MISSION STATEMENT:Barry County Community Mental Health Authority will provide
accessible and affordable mental health and substance abuse serv-
ices focused on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation to county
residents who can benefit from our endeavors and assistance. Our
mission will be supported by efficient and prudent use of our
finances and appropriate diversification.
Often times other Venture affiliates are shownour program as a successful model to strivetowards. Our program has many communitypartners, including but not limited to, CircuitCourt, District Court, Probate Court,Prosecutors Office, local judges and magis-trates, MDOC, Office of CommunityCorrections, Jail, Sheriff's Department,Hastings City Police, Michigan State Police, local fire and rescue, Pennock Hospital,Department of Human Services, Friend of theCourt, local attorneys, area schools, etc. Wecontinue to coordinate with these communitypartners in order to reduce recidivism, as wellas to divert mentally ill/developmentally dis-abled individuals from the legal system whenthis is not the most appropriate place for them.
As part of the Jail Diversion Program and thecommunity coordination, we also offer variousgroups, both at the clinic and at the jail. TheJail Diversion Program Manager has also beenpart of committee to look at changes to the JailDiversion programming across the state.Further development of this program will con-tinue.
BCCMHA is involved in many programsthroughout our community in order to reducerecidivism including the Adult Drug Court,Juvenile Drug Court, 56B District Court (beingdeveloped), Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry, aswell as the Swift and Sure Sanction Pilot
Program. We offer full support to all of theseprograms, attend meetings, report on progressof participants and offer insight and suggestionson treatment plans of the individuals in theseprograms.
Since 2001, the Barry County Trial Court hasoperated both Circuit and Juvenile Drug CourtPrograms. Both programs have proven to besuccessful in assisting those struggling withaddiction coming through their respective courtsystem. However, a service gap was left forthose coming through the courts at a districtlevel. The 56B District Court is in the processof establishing a Drug Court that will assistindividuals dealing with substance abuse relat-ed misdemeanors with the goal of stoppingmany of the defendants from ever reaching thecircuit level through earlier court intervention.
2012 has proved very exciting for BCCMHAand Barry County. Approval was given for agrant in order to develop and participate in theSwift and Sure Sanction Pilot Program(SSSPP). Barry County was one of three coun-ties in the State of Michigan that received thisfunding for new programming, once againshowing our initiative for being cutting edge inthis area of treatment and development. TheSSSPP accepts participants that are not eligiblefor Drug Court. Participants have sentencingguidelines that fall within a straddle cell range, presumptive prison cell range or has a history of
non-compliance on probation. Each participantis expected to participate in treatment, attendbi-weekly/monthly court sessions, meet withprobation agents, submit to periodic and ran-dom substance abuse testing and comply withall court orders and conditions of probation.Immediate apprehension for non-compliance ofrules is enforced. Sanctions include incarcera-tion, electronic monitoring, increase in testingor treatment, additional fines and any lawfulrecommendation by the caseworker, probationagent, or order by the Court. This programallows individuals one last opportunity to workon problems in a free society in hopes of divert-ing them from imprisonment. Coordinatingcommunity partners in this program include,Circuit Court Judge, Court Administration,SSSPP Case managers, MDOC ParoleDepartment, local attorneys, jail administrationand various community resource representa-tives.
The BCCMHA Consumer Advisory Council presently has six repre-sentatives on their Board. These six individuals represent the voice ofthe Barry County Mental Health consumer. This group meets everyother month on the second Friday of that month to discuss questionsand concerns of Barry County mental health consumers. This groupworks to improve the quality of the programs the consumers receive.“I’m proud to serve because I represent the voices of those that can’t beheard,” stated one of the representatives when asked why she chose toserve on this Board.
The goals of the Board for 2012 consist of coming up with ideas toimprove communication with Venture Behavioral Health, addressingcommunication between the local Community Mental Health and thehospital pertaining to lab results, coordination and linkage of a “loneli-ness” group, gathering information regarding substance abuse, findingmembers to serve on the Consumer Advisory Board, and finding perti-nent information regarding Social Security.
If you know a consumer of Barry County Mental Health that wouldlike to serve on this council, please contact Melinda Pepper at 948-4200ext. 211 for an application.
Participants at Positive Directions will have an opportunity to grow pro-
duce and flowers in their new greenhouse this year. BCCMHA was
awarded a grant from the Barry Community Foundation to help with the
funding of the greenhouse. Support was received from the Home
Builders Association of Barry County in the construction of the green-
house. Two local farmers’ markets have offered their support as well.
The green house will be operated as a business called Positive Start
Growers. It will be run by the participants with assistance as needed
from Positive Directions Community Living Support Specialists. The
experience will offer participants with opportunities to boost fine motor
skills, expand social connections in the community, and learn financial
skills. Produce and flowers raised, with as many organic products and
processes as possible, will be sold at local farmers’ markets with surplus
harvests to be shared with those in need in the community. Growers will
also have the opportunity to enter vegetable and flowers they have grown
at the 2012 Barry County Fair.
POSITIVE DIRECTIONS
Peer Support Services are available for all clients of Barry County
Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Certified Peer
Support Specialists are trained to offer additional support to individu-
als facing a mental illness or substance abuse issue.
Services offered by Certified Peer Support Specialists include assis-
tance with community resource connections, active listening, encour-
agement in pursuing goals, client advocacy and empowerment, and aid
in developing life skills. Peers are able to mentor others and provide a
unique perspective. Peers have a special ability to gain trust and respect
due to shared experiences. Peer support services have become an
essential component for many individuals. Training for peer specialists
occur at the state level and an extensive written exam must be passed
to obtain certification

Substance Abuse Prevention And Treatment Services
Substance abuse (SA) services continued to evolve in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Services provided in individual session increased, SA peers were addedto the staff and all substance abuse groups were reviewed and revised to ensure we are meeting the needs of those we serve in the best way possible.Available substance abuse primary groups include: Anger Group (managing anger in a healthy way), Dual Group (coping with mental health and sub-stance abuse issues), Juvenile Dual Group (serving adolescents with mental health and substance abuse issues), Thinking Matters Cognitive BehaviorTherapy Group (in partnership with the Office of Community Corrections, modifying thoughts to support long term behavioral change), Men's Jail Groupand Substance Abuse IOP (intensive outpatient program, a level of care for those needing a more intensive level of care than individual outpatient, butless than residential services).
The program also continued it's tradition of close partnerships and collaborations in the community; community partners include, but are not limited to:the Department of Human Services, Child Protective Services, the Barry County Jail, Adult Drug Court, Juvenile Drug Court, Adult Probation and Parole,56B District Court Probation and the Office of Community Corrections. We look forward to continued growth, partnerships and collaborations, andanother positive year of serving our community.

Since its first studentsgraduated in 1877, HastingsHigh School, like everycommunity’s high school, has helped discoverpotential, launch careers, and change lives. For thenext several weeks, theReminder plans to visit withcurrent graduating seniorsand with past graduates toexplore why Hastings HighSchool has been someaningful in their lives.
Every day, in his work asthe executive director of a12-employee, 130-acreoutdoor nature center with a$1 million annual budget,Travis Williams returns thegifts he received from histeachers and coaches atHastings High School.
“My life has been aculmination of HastingsHigh School plus a numberof other experiences,” saysWilliams, a 1994 graduate,“but, at the same time, Iwouldn’t have been able togo on to the things I did if ithadn’t been for the people atHastings High School.”
Williams counts formerbiology teacher PeteDeDecker as one of thosekey people who had a “hugeimpact” on an interest inbiology that continued atHope College whereWilliams earned a degree inthe science and into hispresent position as theleader of the OutdoorDiscovery Center in Hollandwhich includes a welcomecenter through which 75,000visitors pass each year, fourmiles of trails, a RaptorCenter, and programmingthat introduces and enhancesthe outdoors for over 35,000students every year.
“Mr. DeDecker connectedme to the outdoors,” recallsWilliams. “He usedSweezy’s Pond for many ofhis lessons and he just did so
many things that rooted mein my interest in biology. Itwas Mr. DeDecker thatreally inspired me to do thethings I’ve done.”
It was that type ofinspiration, mentorship, andleadership that Williamsexperienced throughout hisSaxon life that he counts asthe school’s greatest asset.
“The high schoolcertainly had a culture,”Williams points out,“people took an interest inme and they cared.Teachers were able to seetalent and desire in studentsand they helped you go tothe next level -- they madeyou aware that you could doit.”
The level he has attainedcertainly speaks highly ofthe culture to whichWilliams refers.
After graduating fromHope with a degree inbiology, Williams directed asmaller city nature centerand even became a teacherhimself when he designed abiology program for a smallprivate school in Holland. In 2005, he earned a Masters
in Business Administrationdegree from DavenportUniversity and, four yearslater, was offered the chanceto become the director --and the first employee -- ofthe Outdoor DiscoveryCenter.
In three years, Williamshas used his skills as a fundraiser, as an educator, as astrategic planner, and as abiologist to build not only afree venue visited by 75,000patrons each year, but hasalso structured an educationprogram conducted on siteand throughout Ottawa andneighboring counties.
“We work with a lot ofschools,” says Williams,“but we continue to workwith a number of othergroups including theDepartment of NaturalResources, libraryassociations, and townshippark systems. As budgetshave been cut andorganizations don’t have themoney for programming, westep in.”
One dynamic example isthe wildlife program thatWilliams and his staff bring
to Wednesday night campersat Holland State Park.Events that have attractedpatrons and financialsupport also continue to gainin popularity. The annualHalloween open house thispast year drew more than1,800 people.
Williams and the OutdoorDiscovery Center recentlytook on a partner, theMacatawa Greenway, anetwork of permanentlyprotected public and privateparks, forests, streams, andother open natural landsalong tributaries of LakeMacatawa. Through public
and private partnerships, more than 1,000 acres havebeen protected along acorridor which stretchesfrom downtown Holland toZeeland Township andincludes a 1-mile paved trailand nearly four miles ofhiking trails. The Greenwaylands provide protectedhabitat for the area’s wildlifeand additional nature-basededucational and recreationalopportunities for citizensand visitors.
“I’ve been entrusted witha significant task,” concedesWilliams. “We’re not ahuge non-profit organization
but, when you’re getting $1million a year from yourcommunity, it’s a significantinvestment.”
Similar to the oneWilliams knows Hastingsmade in him.
As a three-sport athlete,Williams rememberscountless instances in whichhis football coach, JeffKeller, his basketball coach,Don Schils, and his trackcoach Paul Fulmerdemonstrated theircommitment to make himand every student withwhich they worked better.Even more significant werethe examples they providedin how to handle successand adversity.
“Our football teamwas 2-7 in both my juniorand senior years,” recallsWilliams, “and that wasn’tgood. But we learned howto overcome that. We weretaught how to overcomeadversity and that’s a lessonthat stuck with me.
“In life, you fail all thetime, but it’s how you reactthat makes you the personwho you are.”
Like his teachers atHastings High School, itwas his coaches, Williamssaid, that took the time toget to know him, torecognize his desires, andthen to provide him theopportunity to make hisdreams come true.
“I wanted to play footballin college and all threepushed me to work myhardest and to be my best,”remembers Williams.“Coach Schils would openthe gym for us to play onSundays and Coach Fulmerloaned me track equipmentfor strength conditioning, and all of them had aninterest in your schoolwork. It was a commitment theyhad to make you better.”
Williams did play collegefootball at Hope and uses itas an example of howHastings High Schoolhelped prepare him to takethe next steps in his life.
Today, Williams hishappily married toStephanie with whom heshares the joys of raisingJoshua, 10, Megan, 8, andCora 2 1/2. Even inmarriage, Williams finds tiesto earlier lessons learned atHastings High School.
“You get to place in lifeby the people you surroundyourself with,” sums upWilliams, “and that’s inevery step you take whetherit’s high school, marriage, the people you work with, everything.
“If I stood alone anddidn’t have the parents, theteachers, and the coaches Idid, I wouldn’t be where Iam today.”
- Doug VanderLaan

Though his responsibilities have increased as executive director of the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland,Travis Williams still enjoys passing on his love of wildlife and biology at events like the Halloween Open Housethat annually attracts 1,800 visitors.
