How do I use this booklet? This booklet is designed to help you through the important decisions you need to make in Year 9: your IGCSE options. This is the first time that you will be taking responsibility for your subject choices and this can feel scary and daunting, but at Hastings we will give you the support you need to make the choices that are right for you. You will need to think very carefully about which subjects you want to take in Year 10 as these choices may influence the future of your education. Therefore, you need to think carefully about what you want to do. This options booklet can be the starting point for your research into the different subjects. Here you will find out the different courses you can take and what each one consists of. There is information about course content and how each course is assessed. You will be able to find out the examination requirements for each subject and whether there is a coursework or practical element. What will I study in Year 10 and 11?

• All students study nine core subjects. Examined Subjects: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, at least one Science, French Non-examined subjects: Lengua y Literatura española, Geografía e Historia, PE and PSHE.

• Students must then choose one Science to study (they may opt to take all three single Sciences by using two of their option choices).

Science Choices: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

• Students must then choose three option subjects. Options: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, Fine Art/Photography*, Computer Science, Drama, Physical Education, History, Geography *students may not study both Fine Art and Photography – they must choose one. N.B. If you are considering doing Biology, Chemistry or Physics at A-Level then the Science department recommends taking more than one science at IGCSE as all Sciences support one another. N.B. All native Spanish students take Cambridge Spanish in order to get the IGCSE qualification. They do not get dedicated teaching time across the year for this but will have some preparation before the exam. This is also an option for our non-native speakers.

Page 3: HASTINGS SCHOOL IGCSE OPTIONS BOOKLET 2021

How should I choose my options? There are lots of elements to consider when you choose your IGCSE options. The key things to consider are which subjects inspire you, which you enjoy, and which play to your strengths. This is the best guarantee that you will put a lot of effort into the subject and, as a result, succeed to your full potential. You should not choose subjects simply because your friends are doing them, because you like the teacher, or because a member of your family was successful in it in the past. None of these reasons guarantee that you will enjoy the subject or that you will get the best results possible. Timeline and Deadlines Thursday 14th January 2021 – Introductory Assembly for students to introduce the options process January – February 2021 – Options Information from Teachers Teachers of options subjects will come to speak to you and give you some more details about what their course entails at IGCSE level. You can speak to teachers at any point. In PSHE you will do some work on how to choose the subjects that will be best for you. Thursday 21st January 2021 – 9B, 9G and 9P Parent Meetings 16.45 – 19.00 Thursday 28th January 2021 – 9R and 9Y Parent Meetings 16.45 – 19.00 These parent meetings will be based on the students’ progress so far in the year and suitability for studying the subject into IGCSE Thursday 4th February 2021 – Online Options talk for Students and Parents with Mr Gunzi and Ms Bryant This talk will provide you with information about the Options choices you have at Hastings School. You will then be able to speak to individual teachers about whether studying their subject would be a good choice for you in Years 10 and 11. Options forms will be sent out via Teams and email following your options talk. Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th February 2021 – Mr Gunzi and Ms Bryant available to discuss individual queries These meetings will take place on the online Parent Meeting system. Information about how to sign up will be sent out following the Online Options talk on Thursday 4th February.

Page 4: HASTINGS SCHOOL IGCSE OPTIONS BOOKLET 2021

Tuesday 23rd February 2021 – Deadline for completing the options form Following this: staff will look over options and have conversations with students where necessary. Notes

• The minimum group size for subjects to be run is 8 students. If insufficient numbers sign up for subjects then they will not be run. Equally it is possible that that in unusual circumstances subjects may be withdrawn.

• At the top of each page you will find the Course Name (e.g. English Language) and the Exam

Board and Course Code (e.g. Cambridge 0500). If you type these into a search engine online, you will be able to find further information on the subject, including the full syllabus on the exam board’s website.

Over the course students cover a wide range of topics such as: Earth Science, Air Pollution, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. The IGCSE Chemistry course covers a wide range of topics that are revisited at AS Level and therefore provides the perfect preparation for A-level Chemistry. Due to the abstract nature of the subject and the problem solving that is completed over the course, Chemistry compliments other subjects perfectly at IGCSE level such as: Maths, Physics, Computer Science, and Geography. It requires students to be collaborative while being self-reflective and proactive in their learning.

Assessment: Students sit 3 exams which test their Knowledge and Understanding, how they handle information and solve problems, and their Experimental skills and Investigations. The examination papers are available at either Extended or Core level. The majority of students at Hastings sit the Extended papers. Component Weighting Paper 2: Multiple Choice - 45 minutes 30% Paper 4 Short Answer and Structured Questions - 1h 15 minutes 50% Paper 6 Alternative to Practical - 1 hour 20%

Why study Chemistry? Chemistry is a highly-regarded subject that helps develop skills sets that would be beneficial to any future A-Level subject. It helps students visual the smallest parts of our world that are not visible with the naked eye. It’s in tiny world that the cures for cancer will be discovered, that the vaccine for HIV will be developed, and that our question of Climate Change will be answered. IGCSE Chemistry helps to prepare our students to engage with this world and be part of a future where Chemistry is the answer.

Aims: The Drama IGCSE course aims to develop many elements of our students’ understanding of Drama. It explores both practical and theoretical elements, and focuses on understanding the roles of directors, actors and designers within the theatre. The students will experience the different levels of process behind a theatrical performance and be able to evaluate the various stages of this process. They will develop their acting skills and learn about how to create a piece of theatre – both from a script and also one that they devise themselves. As well as working through the syllabus towards the exam, the Drama course also aims to enhance many personal attributes of our students. They will work both individually and in groups throughout the course, so learn both independence and team work. The course also encourages an empathetic approach to texts, and throughout the course many different cultures and issues are explored through the plays that we study. They will work on their ability to communicate ideas and feelings towards an audience, thus improving their spoken English and confidence in front of a group of people. In addition to this, the course aims to promote an enjoyment of Drama and the theatre.

Assessment:

Curriculum Enrichment:

Theatre trips and drama workshops are an important part of the course. Experience of this nature feeds into students’ own practical work. Students are expected over the two years to go on about four theatre visits, which usually take place after school.

DRAMA CAMBRIDGE 0411

Page 28: HASTINGS SCHOOL IGCSE OPTIONS BOOKLET 2021

Why study Drama? Students should have an interest in theatre as a live event, and in drama as an effective means of helping us to understand our lives and our relationships. This course approaches drama from the angle of the performer or of those who contribute as designers or technicians to the theatre. It presents an exciting and refreshing opportunity to escape the restrictions of class bound textual study, combining an analytical approach with a significant practical performance element. .

Aims: Geography IGCSE aims for learners to develop a 'sense of place' by looking at the world around them on a local, regional and global scale. Learners will examine a range of natural and unnatural environments, and study some of the processes which affected their development. They will also look at the ways in which people interact with their environment, and the opportunities and challenges an environment can present, thereby gaining a deeper insight into the different communities and cultures that exist around the world. IGCSE Geography students will gain: • an understanding of the processes which affect physical and human environments • an understanding of location on a local, regional and global scale • the ability to use and understand geographical data and information • an understanding of how communities around the world are affected and constrained by different environments.

Assessment:

GEOGRAPHY CAMBRIDGE 0460

Page 33: HASTINGS SCHOOL IGCSE OPTIONS BOOKLET 2021

Curriculum Enrichment: To allow students to see the processes they learn about in real life there will be a residential Geography trip. This will help students to understand the complex physical processes they are studying and prepare them for their field work exam (paper 4).

Why study Geography? Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. It is hands on, it is relevant and it is fun. The Cambridge IGCSE course is a good mix of topics such as urban issues, world development, rivers and hazards – to name but a few. The course will give you the chance to get to grips with some of the big questions which affect our world, and understand the social, economic and physical forces and processes which shape and change our world.

In the long term, Geography graduates have some of the highest rates of graduate employment.

Geography is great for any kind of career that involves the environment, planning, or collecting and interpreting data. Popular careers for people with geography qualifications include: town or transport planning, surveying, conservation, sustainability, waste and water management, environmental planning, tourism, and weather forecasting.

The army, police, government, research organisations, law and business world also love the practical research skills that geographers develop.

Because geographers learn about human and population development, geography can be useful for jobs in charity and international relations too.

Page 34: HASTINGS SCHOOL IGCSE OPTIONS BOOKLET 2021

Aims: The History IGCSE course focuses on particularly exciting and defining moments of the 20th century. It aims to engage students who have an interest in understanding why these events occurred and to appreciate the differing, but interconnected, motives of key individuals and countries. The Core Content of International Relations since 1919 follow events which include:

• The Peace treaties at the end of World War 1

• The League of Nations, an experiment in peace keeping

• Japanese, Italian and German aggression and the outbreak of the Second World War

• The origins of the Cold War

• Korea, Cuba and Vietnam

• Eastern Europe, 1948-1990

• The 1st Gulf War, 1990-1991

A Depth Study is also completed on Germany, 1918-1945. Students need to enjoy writing at length and demonstrate a certain competence and fluency in this. The different topics need to be learnt thoroughly so that precise historical details can be recalled and included in their answers. There are three different types of exam questions which are tested at the end of Year 11. During the two years of the course, these are tackled as homework and as timed assignments. By the final exams, the students have developed great skill and knowledge about how to answer them.

Why study Photography?

The Photography GCSE course will enable students to develop: • an ability to record from direct observation and personal experience

• an ability to identify and solve problems in visual and/or other forms

• creativity, visual awareness, critical and cultural understanding

• an imaginative, creative and personal response

• confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of achievement in the practice of art and design

• growing independence in the refinement and development of ideas and personal outcomes

• engagement and experimentation with a range of media, materials and techniques, including new

media and technologies, where appropriate

• experience of working in relevant frameworks and exploration of manipulative skills necessary to

form, compose and communicate in two and/or three dimensions

• a working vocabulary relevant to the subject and an interest in, and a critical awareness of, other

practitioners, environments and cultures

• investigative, analytical, experimental, interpretative, practical, technical and expressive skills which

aid effective and independent learning.

It is a course that is respected by universities as they recognise the skills that are obtained over the two years: develop (research and investigation demonstrating critical and analytical understanding), refine (explore and experiment a wide range of techniques and processes), record (observations and ideas relevant to intentions as work progresses) and present (offer a personal and coherent response that realises

intentions and visual language).

Skills and Topics covered: Students will focus on the Photography area of study. The

course aims to develop new media processes to produce outcomes such as photomontage, printed photography, digital photography, photographic or digital creation and manipulation. Other traditional media (painting, drawing, printing etc.) over photos may as well be explored and developed. Work may be in colour and/or black and white. Candidates should demonstrate an expressive and/or interpretative artistic response to the visual world. They should show an understanding of the conventions of photography and genres such as portrait, landscape and movement, and a range of techniques appropriate to their chosen field. Consideration of the following techniques should be given: • Aperture, shutter speed and ISO • depth of field, lighting and exposure techniques • viewpoint/composition/framing and formal aesthetic elements • use of digital tools and editing programs such as Photoshop
