Hello July! July is the seventh month of the year (between June and August) in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. It was named by the Roman Senate in honour of the Roman gen-eral, Julius Caesar, it being the month of his birth. Prior to that, it was called Quintilis. (You learn something new every day!) In this issue we have some exciting stories for you to read, and an interview with Renato Pires of Impatient Patient Disorder which you can read on page 19. When looking for a new job, have you ever considered that your new employer may be looking at your Facebook? Checking out what you done on the weekend? Find out more on page 9, as we have a great article from Cale Sinfield. Local entrepreneur Leigh bites the bullet on page 7, and sets up his own business! His work has since had a front page Feature on Camper and Commercial maga-zines and was on display at the ‘Volksworld Show’ at Sandown Park Racecourse, Europe’s largest indoor Volkswagen show. Whilst looking for my next subject for the Hastings Voice cover, I came across a hidden local talent. Melissa White is an interior designer and painter, best known for her bespoke Elizabethan wall paintings and painted cloths. Tucked away near a peaceful lake in ore, Melissa studio was a breath of patterns and colours; with wallpapers and designs hanging in every corner of her studio.

Melissa has spent several years researching the subject of Elizabethan art, and has an expert understanding in the way our ancestor decorated their homes. Interestingly, she explained to me that instead of the bare timber frames and white plastered walls seen in Tudor houses today, their interiors used to be decorated by hanging painted clothes full of colour and patterns. Some paintings were applied directly to the walls, whilst oth-ers were simply draped, stretched and pined to the surroundings. The decorators used to go from house to house, renewing them every so often as it endured the pass of time.

These wall arts have almost all disappeared now, but Melissa reproduces these unique feeling of aged yet beautiful patterns in her signature work. One of her latest work “The rolling hill of Albion” - a 140 cm high landscape wallpaper inspired from 18th century painted wall hangings and tapestry, can be seen locally in the Albion pub.

Over the years, Melissa has contributed to many Elizabethan projects for museums and events, including the re-display project for Shakespeare's Birthplace Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon. In 2007, she became a QEST scholar (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust). Melissa continues to teach at her workshops in her studio and at universities, for more information about Melissa, please visit www.melissawhite.co.uk

My passion and love for Volkswagens started at a very early age when I watched my first ‘Herbie’ Film at the age of 7 or 8. As a result I knew I wanted a Beetle as my first car and after returning from ‘Op Telic’ in Iraq in 2003, my dream came true. At 19 years old I bought a 1967 Beetle and drove it everywhere, even to Germany where I was based with the Royal Corps of Signals.

When I left the British Army in 2008 after serving 8 years I had no real idea of what I wanted to do, but I knew that one day I would start my own Busi-ness. For the past 8 years I have had a multitude of jobs, from working as a TA in New Horizons School, to travelling the world as a technical support engineer for Drallim, a Hastings based Engineering firm. However it was during my short time working for Rother District Council that I decided ‘If I don’t do it now, I never will’.

I have been building and working on my own campers since buying my first ‘T25 Syncro’ in 2007 but in recent years I have worked on friends cars and built campervans for others on my driveway so word had got out that I could build a van to a specification.

In Febraury 2016 I bit the bullet and ‘Combe Valley Campers’ was born. I am a local boy and the name was inspired by the local area and park land and also by the new link road that is set to bring in lots of new trade and business to the area. I had put £250 to one side after selling a car and used that as a deposit for my first workshop. I had accumulated tools and ma-chinery over the years meaning that I could start the job straight away.

Since opening the doors I have had already built and worked on a number of vans and have plenty more in the pipeline. One van that has really helped promote the business is ‘Binky’ a white over green 1979 Camper van that I completed last year. It has since had a front page Feature on Camper and Commercial magazine and was on display at the ‘Volksworld Show’ at Sandown Park Racecourse, Europe’s largest indoor Volkswagen show.

Combe Valley Campers services include - van conversions, van lining, electrics (12v and 240v) gas fitting, heater installation, car-pentry, upholstery and trimming. If you would like your camper completely restored or you have a fault that needs a fix we can cater for Volkswagen or any other make of campervan.

We are currently building a website for the company, however if you have any enquiries please call Leigh on 07837 275374 or email [email protected] The workshop is based in Hellingly.

Have you considered that future employers may check you out on Facebook or Twitter? It happens a lot. I have done it myself. Potential employers can tell a lot about you – good or bad – from your Social Media profile. Let’s have a look at what you might be able to do to help clean things up.

Don’t forget that hiring managers who look at social media may look at what you post as a reflection of the type of person you are. Not just the obscenities or rude pictures, but down to the grammar and spelling of your posts. Thinking with Brexit in mind, do you frequently go on political rants? Do you criticise others for their opinions? It might be worth taking a look back at your recent posts but with a professional head on! J

Take a look at your photos. You want to look like a nice person, a family person, certainly a professional – so pictures with the family or a professional head shot is a must. Have you got pictures of you and your mates out on a drunken night with your trousers down or maybe a traffic cone on your head (its illegal you know J ). It would be well worth considering deleting these from your profiles.

If you have been tagged in any questionable photos it might also be worth un-tagging yourself.

Choose a professional photo as your profile picture. Especially for LinkedIn purposes. A head shot is ideal.

Whilst you are deleting your old posts and photos take a look for posts that you may have mentioned previous employment or employers. Hiring managers would hate to see you bad mouthing previous employers or colleagues. But even looking on a posi-tive let’s say you have been working on a project and shared it all over social media, some companies like a bit of confidentiali-ty, it’s a tricky business!

Focusing on Facebook for a minute, if like me you have been on Facebook for what seems a lifetime there might be some per-sonal parts that you haven’t updated in a long time. Update your info, delete anything questionable and create more of an ac-curate picture of who you are. Look especially at the section ‘About Me’.

LinkedIn. Most future employers will look for you there, maybe to double check that the info on there matches that of your CV. Update it with a current professional picture, it is well worth spending some time getting this right. Update all information so it is current. This might not be your social media platform of choice, however it is for a lot of business professionals.

Twitter, keep it interesting. If you use social media – especially Twitters 140 characters – to rant and moan, consider what fu-ture employers might think?

Not all future managers will look at the social media but let’s say that they do and they are the hiring manager of your dream job. You miss out just because you went out on a drunken night with a traffic cone on your head shouting about your views on Brexit and moaning about how much your past employer had hygiene issues and then plastered that all over Facebook… I may just stop you getting to the next step on the ladder or that job you have always wanted.

It’s not all bad though, hiring managers might like your motivational posts, especially if you’re going into management. They might like to see that you are a family orientated person. They will love to see that you are a happy employable person.

If you would like me to cast a professional eye over your Social Media, email me at [email protected]

The Hastings Branch of the Sussex Moth Group were wel-come visitors to the Pestalozzi International Village last weekend. On Friday evening Crystal Ray, Gerry Balcikonis and Peter Ray set up moth traps in different habitats on the estate. Crystal explained to the audience of Pestalozzi stu-dents and guests how the traps worked and why moths are so magical.

The group learned that there are more than 2000 species of moth to be found in the UK ranging from spectacularly beautiful hawkmoths to inconspicuous micro moths. Moths play an important role as pollinators and are also a food source for birds and bats. The group also witnessed foraging pipistrelle bats when they walked around the traps.

Early on Saturday morning the group gathered again and, fortified with delicious bacon and egg rolls from the Pestalozzi kitchen, watched as Crystal, Peter and Gerry revealed the over-night visitors. Visitor Nicki Verrall said “I never knew moths could be so beautiful. It was definitely worth the early start.”

The star of the day was the Lime Hawkmoth but there were more than 30 species present including Buff Ermine, Green Silver-lines, Wainscot, Heart and Dart and the Peppered Moth. Pestalozzi student Arnold Katende was delighted with the latter saying “I have just written about the Peppered Moth in my Biology A-Level and now I have seen one for myself!”

Thanking the Sussex Moth Group Pestalozzi’s CEO Sue Walton said “We are very grateful to Crystal, Peter and Gerry for giving up their time to run this event and introduce us to the magic of moths. We are looking forward to having them back for another session in the autumn where they may also do some ‘sugaring’ to attract different species.”

We all know we’re going to go one day but isn’t it best to put things in order for those left behind? Without the correct plan-ning in place, you could be setting up a potential battle between your heirs, the only winners of which are likely to be the law-yers involved in resolving it. MVL Wills and Trusts looks at the signs that suggest things might get nasty after you’ve gone.

Sibling rivalry

The settlement of a parent’s estate can cause old rivalries to reappear and arguments may well ensue. The appointment of an independent trustee to oversee a trust can help resolve disputes.

Disparity of wealth among beneficiaries

A wealthy beneficiary can afford to hold on to an asset but poorer inheritors may need the asset to be sold to release cash. Avoid problems by making your wishes clear.

Co-Executors

Having more than one executor to deal with the estate could lead to disputes. Appoint a single executor, with a reserve if they’re unable to perform. Consider a professional if your estate is complex.

Estrangement

Children who have been excluded from inheriting have nothing to lose from challenging the will. Your will and trusts should be reviewed and if necessary updated every five years or so. Also ensure your reasons for any exclusion are explained and kept with your will.

Late Marriage

Marriage later in life can cause resentment amongst the family. Marriage revokes a will which could lead to assets leaving the family bloodline. Ensure the will is updated and trusts are in place to illustrate how assets are to be divided.

Gifts during lifetime

Gifts or loans to one beneficiary during lifetime could strain relationships later with those who didn’t receive anything. Avoid problems by noting the gift in your trusts if it was considered an advance on any inheritance.

Is Your Family Ready for Heir Warfare?

Page 16: Hastings Voice Magazine - July 2016

The state pension was first introduced in May 1908 by the then

recently appointed Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith. The Old Age

Pensions Act received royal assent in August of that year and

the first payments were made to pensioners in January of the

following year.

At that time eligible people over the age of 70 were entitled to

a maximum payment of five shillings per week – in today’s

terms this is equivalent to £20.

Comparing the first 100 years of the state pension it’s clear to

see why the government’s pension budget is now under strain.

In 1908, there were 500,000 pensioners – in 2008 there were

12 million. The £20 per week payment had increased to £90,

and the ratio for surviving to age 100 had increased from 1:200

to 1:4. The government decided to push an initiative for us to

save for our own retirement to compliment the state provision.

In 2008, a revised Pensions Act was made for all eligible

employees to be automatically enrolled into their company

pension. The membership of this scheme runs between

October 2012 and February 2018 by which time every

organisation of any size will need to offer a workplace pension

to their workers.

Employees – will you be automatically enrolled?

As a worker you will fall into one of three categories, one of

which automatically places you in your workplace pension. This

most common category covers all UK workers aged between 22

and state pension age who earn over £10,000 per year.

If this means you – contributions to your pension will begin at

the next pay day after the company’s ‘staging date’ (or after a

maximum 3-month postponement period if this has been

utilised by your employer). Although you have a right to opt-

out, this can only be done once you have been assessed for

eligibility, i.e. after staging date.

Pension contributions are based on a qualifying band of income

(£5,824 - £43,000 for this tax year). Initially you will pay 1%

including tax relief, rising to 5% in April 2019. Your employer

will pay 1% of your qualifying earnings, rising to 3% in April

2019. These are minimum amounts and you are normally able

to increase your contributions if you wish, however your

employer is not obliged to follow suit.

Employers – Is your company ready for auto-enrolment?

Choosing a pension scheme for auto-enrolment is a

complicated and time consuming process. There are a

number of steps your company will need to go through;

starting with finding out your company’s staging date,

assessing your workforce, keeping them up-to-date with the

pension changes, and informing the Pensions Regulator that

you have met your obligations. Once the pension scheme is

up and running you then need to make contributions and

manage opt-outs and new joiners.

Furthermore, there are a number of other issues that you will

need to consider to practically implement the regulations:

Which product solution will best suit your company’s

needs?

What will you choose as your default investment and

contribution level?

How the costs and admin burden affect your

business?

How will you retain and maintain your records?

How will you notify your eligible jobholders?

Can McPhersons help?

The Pensions Regulator has stated that 7/10 employers are

seeking advice on meeting their Auto-Enrolment obligations.

If you require assistance, Aron Gunningham is our pension

specialist and an independent financial adviser. Aron will be

happy to help answer your questions and guide you through

your duties.

The Pension Regulator has issued financial penalties for companies who do not comply by their staging date, or for errors in the scheme once it has been setup. Coupled with the admin involved in meeting your duties, it would be prudent to speak to a financial professional. Want to improve your on task prioritisation and time management skills? Terence Mauri, a leading business speaker in leader-ship and management issues, offers some tips.

‘I am definitely going to take a course on time management … just as soon as I can work it into my schedule’ (anonymous).

An eight hour day is only 480 minutes. In that time you have to complete tasks, meet deadlines, attend meetings, speak to cli-ents, manage interruptions, write emails, handle voicemail; and that’s all before lunch! Speed is now king. You must now be effective at working, often under pressure where the art of prioritisation, delegating and protecting your time are must-haves.

It’s no surprise that according to a recent global survey by Accenture on management productivity, over 80% of respondents agreed that ‘they often felt there weren’t enough minutes in the day to achieve everything’. Can you relate to this? In Japan, this condition is known as ‘Karoshi’ – death at your desk from stress. A fate to be avoided at all costs!

At the heart of time management is an important shift in focus around the following areas:

Concentrate on results, not on being busy. Many people spend their days in a frenzy of activity, but achieve very little be-cause they are not concentrating on the right things.

Use the 80:20 rule. This is neatly summed up in the Pareto Principle, or the '80:20 Rule'. This argues that typically 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your inputs. It really doesn't matter what numbers you apply, the important thing to re-member is that in your life there are certain activities you do (your 20%) that account for the majority (your 80%) of your happiness and outputs.

Every day divide your tasks into A, B and C priorities. Always start with a high priority ‘A’ task, even if you can only accom-plish a small part of it.

Block off time for activities that are important. Make an appointment with yourself, and don't let anyone schedule any-thing for the time you’ve put aside.

Stop spending time on trivia. Don’t spend hours writing an email when a good conversation will suffice. Stop fussing over routine administrative tasks: delegate or automate them.

Have the courage to say no. Don’t try to please others all the time. Create personal boundaries that make it easy to say no and stick to your plan.

Slow down. Productivity isn't about going fast. It's about doing the right things. Stop rushing around, driving too fast and getting upset at things you can't control. A couple of minutes gained aren't worth the added stress.

Avoid procrastination by completing unpleasant tasks first. The tough stuff usually turns out to be not so bad. Break com-plex tasks into easy pieces and give yourself a reward for getting something done.

Create time for balance in your life. Set aside time for family, fitness, social, educational and spiritual needs. Plan for bal-ance the way you plan for work.

‘The key is in not spending time, but in investing it’ (Stephen R Covey).
