Electric Palace Cinema, 39a High Street,TN34 3ERAdapted from the novel by Erich MariaRemarque. The film follows a group ofGerman schoolboys, talked into enlistingat the beginning of World War 1 by theirteacher. The story is told entirely throughthe experiences of the young Germanrecruits and highlights the tragedy of warthrough the eyes of individuals. A landmarkof American cinema and a highly emotivefilm, which fixed the popular image of whatit was like in the trenches. It still retains itsoverall power and remains a great pacifistwork.Dir: Lewis Milestone / 1930 / 136mins /USA / PG. Why Hastings Week?

14th October (now Hastings Day) was thedate in 1066 when King Harold lost theBattle of Hastings. William Duke ofNormandy, who was using Hastings as hisbase, then claimed the crown and changedthe way England was governed forever. Healso gave us the English language. In 1966the 900th anniversary of the Battle wascelebrated and it was such a success thatHastings Borough Council decided to markthe date every year as Hastings Day. For atime it was just a day of activities but it hasgrown over the years to become a week-longcelebration of art, music, walks, sport, events, and exhibitions. The Hastings Week programme of events isput together by a band of volunteers on theHastings Week Committee who give up theirtime freely; and we thank them for theircontinued support and enthusiasm.

The Bowskill TrophyPresented in memory of Cyril Bowskill who, with his wife Joan, was a great supporter ofHastings Week. From a majority vote based onpublic nominations, it is given to a person, group or organisation who has done most topromote the prestige of the week. Certificatesof Merit are given to ‘Runners up’. Everyoneworks so hard for the success of HastingsWeek, it is always difficult to choose but it isgood, and very necessary to showappreciation.Nomination Forms can be obtained from theHastings Week Committee Secretary.
