REFLECTION FOR TODAY THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

In the Gospel of Mark Jesus first makes his appearance as an adult – not as a baby. There is no nativity story in Mark. He simply starts with Jesus breaking through into the world as the long–awaited Redeemer. That break-through is announced by a “prophet in the wilderness.” John the Baptist was a man of the desert. He lived tough and he talked tough. The desert had sharpened his spirituality, giving him a clear sense of his mission (“Prepare the way…”) and of his place in that mission (“I am not worthy…”). The desert is like that. It is a place of sweetness and pain, a place of great testing. The Christian life is like the desert – sometimes beautiful and sometimes severe. It can be a life of great, great testing. Jesus never tried to hide this from his disciples. But anyone who is willing to walk with him in the desert will be repaid a hundredfold – in this life and in the next.
