GARY PAULSEN
Gary Paulsen was born on May 17, 1939, inMinneapolis, Minnesota. After graduating from highschool, he attended Bemidji College for one year. Mr.Paulsen served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. Helater went to school at the University of Colorado.
Mr. Paulsen has lived in British Columbia, Wyoming,North Dakota, and New Mexico. At various times in hislife, he has been employed as a truck driver, dynamitehandler, carpenter, teacher, migrant worker, electronicsengineer, farmer, rancher, and trapper. He has alsowritten more than eighty books, over two hundred shortstories and articles, and two plays. One of his novels,Dancing Carl, was choreographed and performed as adance.
Although he has written a variety of fiction andnonfiction works for adults, Gary Paulsen is perhapsbest known for his books for young adult readers. Whenasked where the ideas for the adventures in his storiescome from, Mr. Paulsen said that either he hasexperienced them all or someone close to him has. In1983 Mr. Paulsen competed for the first time in theAlaskan Iditarod, a 1,180-mile dogsled race fromAnchorage to Nome. He describes this experience, alongwith some of his other nature adventures, in hisautobiography, Woodsong.
Gary Paulsen is married to Ruth Wright, an artist. Theyhave one son, James.

Thirteen-year-old Brian Robesonremembers the day when he saw hismother in a strange car at the shoppingmall, kissing that man. Brian hasn’t told theSecret to anyone. He has never mentionedit to his mother. He didn’t even tell theSecret to his father when his parents weregetting their divorce.
Now Brian is on his way to spend hisfirst summer with his father, who is amechanical engineer working in theCanadian oil fields. Brian is flying in asmall Cessna 406 to visit him. The pilot ofthe plane is pleasant but quiet. The twohave flown in silence for much of the tripover the Canadian wilderness.
Brian is thinking again about the Secretwhen the pilot jerks and clutches his chest.Before Brian knows what is happening, theman has a heart attack and dies. Brian issuddenly alone in the plane, which is stillflying above the forests and lakes ofCanada. When Brian finally realizes hiscircumstances, the only thing that he cando is keep the plane on course until it runsout of gas. Then his only hope is that hecan manage to live through a crash landing.
The plane flies on for hours before itfinally sputters and falls from the sky into alake. Somehow, Brian survives the impactof the plane on the water and then escapesfrom the cockpit and swims to the surfaceof the lake. When he awakes hours later onthe shore of the small lake, Brian is hurtand alone, but he is alive.
Equipped with only the clothes on hisback and a small hatchet that his motherhas given him, Brian has to find a way tostay alive in the wilderness. Although it isdifficult to meet his basic needs for foodand shelter, he eventually begins to adaptto his surroundings. Brian learns how tohunt and fish, and he devises increasinglymore complex tools from the materialsavailable to him.
As Brian learns how to take care ofhimself in the woods, he also learns a newappreciation for the natural world and hisplace in it. When he is finally rescued afterliving alone by the lake for fifty-four days,Brian is a changed person. He has learneda lot about himself, the meaning ofcourage, and the importance of survival.
