Moran Outdoor SchoolSchool Description:Moran Outdoor School is a Washington State parkprogram that takes place at Camp Moran Environmen-tal Learning Center in Moran State Park. The parkoffers 5000-acre natural diversity, 9 distinct plantcommunities old growth forest, 5 fresh water lakes,and Mount Constitution. The Camp is situated at theedge of Cascade Lake with a 100 year old appleorchard where wildlife gather. The Outdoor Schooloffers programs well as facilities for rental outsidesessions.

Program Description:Programming can be customized but all existingactivities are tied through common concepts anddirected by Washington State learning requirements.Existing programs include Watersheds, WetlandStudies, Forest Community Study, Microforest Studyand Creatures of the Forest.

Notes:Groups need to book far in advance as priority is givento returning groups. Scheduled programming seasonsare Spring to April 1 to June 15; Fall - September 1 toOctober 31, however, programming is available allyear. For rentals of just the facilities call Steve Sabine,1-360-902-8600.

School Description:Olympic Coast Marine Sanctuary covers 3,310-squaremiles of marine waters off the rugged Olympic Penin-sula coastline. The sanctuary provides habitat for oneof the most diverse marine mammal faunas in NorthAmerica and a critical link in the Pacific flyway. Thesanctuary boasts a rich mix of cultures, preserved incontemporary lives of members of Quinault, Hoh,Quileute, and Makah tribes.

Program Description:The Sanctuary offers workshops, classes and publiceducational programs, limited assistance in helpingteachers conduct field trips to sites within theSanctuary, research skills program, supplements toclassroom, lab and textbook teaching with hands-onfield investigations and build on students’ experi-ences in the outdoors.

School Description:Founded in 1994, Salish Sea Expeditions is non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the scien-tific process using inquiry based methods whileincreasing awareness of the unique Puget Soundmarine ecosystem. Their mission is to combineinnovative classroom study with boat based fieldresearch, thereby providing an exciting educationalopportunity for student to learn scientific principlesand develop problem solving skills while navigatingthe waters of Puget Sound.

Program Description:There are group, family, individual and schoolprograms which use an inquiry based learningapproach. Salish Sea provide the tools and informa-tion students need to plan a complete oceano-graphic research expedition, from the researchdesign to the meal planning, sail handling andnavigation. The programs are tailored to thespecific location, needs and background of eachgroup, so the exact subject matter and focus eachprogram is unique. In addition to general oceanog-raphy, topics can range from the physics of sail tointertidal investigations to maritime history. Allacademic programs include the following keycomponents: a thorough introduction to the scien-tific method, an overview of water quality issuesand human impacts on the marine environment,basic oceanography and oceanographic equip-ment, and sail handling and navigation. Thesetopics are covered in classroom planning sessionsand then put into practice on the Sound,

School Description:The 65' steel-hulled motor vessel Snow Goosewas originally built in Alaska for exploring theinside passage. She was converted for researchand education programs with the Seattle Aquariumand is fully equipped with marine research instru-ments, making her ideal for academic researchand natural history explorations. They offer oneday to several day scheduled trips in the San JuanIslands, discovering and exploring islandwildflowers, migrating birds, Orca Whales and theartistic inspiration found in the island landscape.

Sound ExperienceSchool Description:Environmental Education aboard the Adventuress, aschooner originally commissioned to gather arcticsamples. Students learn about the Puget Sound’sdiverse and productive ecosystem, which participatingin activities such as plankton studies, water quality,marine invertebrates, marine mammals, weather andnautical skills.

Program Description:The overnight voyages last two to ten days for anyone12 or older, and three to five hour day programs for allages. Existing programs include a Group Day Sail,Sound Studies, and Sound Explorations. SoundExperience staff are able to customize programs forthe needs of the groups or host programs. The vesselhas a specimen tank, water quality testing and trawl-ing equipment, and also has a Marine ScienceTeacher Training program.

Wind River Canopy Crane Research ProjectSchool Description:The Wind River Canopy Crane Research Facility islocated within the 478 hectare Thorton T. MungerResearch Natural Area in the Gifford Pinchot NationalForest with a 4 hectare crane plot located at 355 melevation, deep within the southern WashingtonCascade Range. The facility is located on gentletopography near the base of Trout Creek Hill, anextinct volcanic cone, with coarse textured soils, aseasonally intermittent stream running through thesite, and an extensive swampy area.

Program Description:The Project’s main purpose is research but canaccommodate visiting groups for half day educationalfield trips, including interpretation of the field station,general canopy ecology, a walk to the crane andsome discussion of the Research Project.

Notes:Research conducted at the site includes needlecomparisons, soil moisture and water flux, forestproductivity, phenology, carbon dynamics, belowcanopy solar radiation, canopy structure and inte-grated ecosystem studies. The Project does notprovide crane lifts or coordinate/supervise activities.
