Letters to the Editor
Tena koe Des just received the Hauraki News (issue No.52) and thoroughly enjoyed reading the manyarticles. Good to see some of my old soldiers buddies in the photos.
How ironic, that i received this issue today in the mail as it is officially my last day as a soldier in the NZArmy, having completed 24 years service.
My career kick started on 13 Feb 1980, where I had joined the Territorial Forces as a Hauraki Soldier. Aftercompleting the 22 week Basic/Corps Training (Real Training) at WTD, l was posted to Support Coy, ReconPlatoon (The “ELITE” Platoon, you were my Platoon Sergeant). Last night, I was packing all my serviceuniforms and FSMO for return to the Nelson Army Office, and when i went to empty out my trunk of memoirsI came across my old Hauraki Corps Belt! Ahhhhh, fond memories of this unit, I can still remember attendingthe night parades at the old Army Office on the Tauranga waterfront. I had great pride in wearing my highly“starched” jersey and BD trousers complete with shapers (only the old soldiers will know what these are) and“spit” polished boots! The training program could vary from dry TOETs on the SLR or LMG to drill in thetransport park or we could be out in the vacant section next to the Army Hall practicing individual stalkingtechniques. Regardless of the training, it was always the same dress standard for every night parade! Greatexperiences, great memories, great comradeships, GREAT UNIT.

PS. Please advise me on how i can purchase a Hauraki coin.

2Garrison Club
The Garrison Club depends upon volunteers to operate. The Bar managers are BobMankelow, Marion Kareko, Hugh Bomford, Kevin Hayden , Mark Fairhurst & DesAnderson.
The Garrison Club without a doubt has the lowest prices around. We believe that we arenot there to make a large profit, but for the comradeship within the Hauraki family &friends.
With happy bar staff, cheap prices and a friendly atmosphere: all that is needed tocomplete the equation is YOU. The Garrison is open on Friday from 1600hrs.
See you there.
