Origin
In the 16th century, immigrants from Spain landed in Cuba and discovered the Havanese breed.
Havanese were brought back to to Spain where they were admired for being a lap-dog of Spanish aristocracy.
The Havanese were sometimes referred to as the Havana Silk Dog or the Spanish Silk Poodle by the Spanish.
Origin The Havanese
were closely related to the, now extinct, Tenerife breed, which is an ancestor of the Bichon family.
The Havanese breed is now the National Dog of Cuba.
The Havanese is the only breed native to Cuba.
Origin – My Thoughts
The Havanese are relatively “old breed” because they were discovered around the 16th Century (although, they were only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996).
The Spanish were impressed with the Havanese breed and admired them so much that royalty in Spain owned them; there must be something good about the breed!
Appearance – Body
Known as a “toy”, small in stature (stands between 8 ½ and 11 ½ inches tall)
Sturdy and solid physical body
Slightly longer in length than height
Long tail curls up over behind
Small, black button nose
Dark eyes and black lips, standard on all colors of Havanese
Long, dangling ears
Appearance - Coat Coat ranges in color –
white, black, cream, silver, gold, brown, blue (can be multicolored)
Pattern may vary from solid colored coat to speckled or stripped
Coat can vary from curly to wavy hair
Show dogs must have long coat, puppies coats can be short
Hypoallergenic Does not shed
Appearance – My Thoughts
The Havanese is the perfect small dog for many families because of their sturdiness and small size.
Havanese are good for families that may have allergies to other kinds of dogs, because they are hypoallergenic.
Havanese can be kept in a “puppy cut” to reduce maintenance and do not shed so dog hair will not be all over the place!
Havanese Temperament
Havanese have playful and youthful spirits and are good with kids.
People-oriented breed and enjoy following their chosen “person” around.
Havanese are an alert and intelligent breed.
Have a sensitive nose and find things easily by sense of smell.
Good alarm dog, but not watch dog. They alert when a stranger arrives, but love meeting new people.
Havanese are easily excitable, but calm down quickly.
Temperament
They are easily trainable and enjoy learning and performing new tricks.
Havanese are known as “circus dogs” and when excited they enjoy dancing on their hindquarters or running back and forth quickly between rooms.
Enjoy sitting up high where they can see and observe what is going on around them.
Approximate lifespan is between 14-16 years.
Havanese do not require much exercise.
Temperament – My Thoughts
Havanese have a natural love for human affection and are great family dogs.
My Havanese, Molly, displays all of the above personality traits that are stated about the breed like playing, and doing tricks.
Molly, Christmas 2009 >
Molly has a “special person” she follows around in our house, my dad. Molly is very protective of him.
Personal Reflection
While creating this type PowerPoint, I learned how to make another type of PowerPoint.
I also learned how to use the internet, YouTube, and other sites to help construct the design of the project.
Writing this PowerPoint helped me learn more about the breed of dog I have and understand why she does the things she does.
