TRAIL TALK Your monthly club newsletter December 2012 Volume 20, Number 12
P residents Message G r e e t i n g s Havasu 4-Wheelers! Can you believe it is
December already, and temperatures in Lake Havasu are still hovering around 80 degrees. How lucky are we to have such beautiful weather for 4-wheeling! November was a busy month filled with Desert Cleanup thanks to Sue Guibord, Turkey Roast thanks to Jim and Joanne Malara, Jeep Rodeo thanks to my partner in crime Mike MacLean and lots of off road fun thanks to all you trail bosses out there.
The Jeep Rodeo was changed up this year, and I hope everyone had a good time. The winners of the blind driving course were- 3rd place Sue Guibord and Jim Bowen, 2nd place Marilyn Zufall and Windy Burchard, and 1st place was a repeat from last year, Penny Leistiko and Cal Bowman. They have that course nailed! Slow driving winners were-3rd place Jerry and Deb Kuhnke, 2nd place Cal Bowman and Penny Leistiko and 1st place went to Jay and Chris Myers.
We have some great runs coming up in December, so you have many opportunities to get out into this beautiful desert of ours. We also have our highway cleanup on December 5th, and AED classes led by our very own Doc Andy Lucas. We are so fortunate to have Andy in our club to lead these classes, so I recommend everyone take advantage of learning this valuable lesson.
Last but not least, don’t forget our Annual Awards Banquet scheduled for January 12th where we will recognize all of our hard working trail bosses and award our 4-wheeler of the year. Who will it be this year? It’s up to you.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year! Until next time,
Happy Trails, Cheryl

O n November 7th, seven jeeps met at Scenic Look Out to air down and start the run. There were 10 members and one guest. The run went well with everyone showing their driving skills at the waterfalls.
After lunch we had a trail observation test by passing thru
the lunch spot again, and I was pleasantly surprised by the
number of people that noticed. Thanks to Steve Perry for
being tail gunner and rear navigator.

Dirty desert cleanup November 5, 2012
Havasu 4 Wheelers Conduct Desert Clean-Up
T he Havasu 4 Wheelers, a local off road organization consisting of 160 member families, conducted its annual desert clean-up effort Monday. The group concentrated on a popular off roading and unregulated shooting area on the north side of the city. The group based its activities out of Colt and Paseo de Oro Drives.
Fifty club members set out first thing in the morning collecting trash and various materials strewn thought the area most
of which had been used as targets. After 4 hours of work the group had collected enough waste material to fill two 40
cubic yard roll-off trash containers, one to capacity. This annual effort is conducted as part of the club‟s conservation
efforts to “give back to the desert areas we all use and enjoy.”
The effort was conducted in coordination with the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office, Tread Lightly, an off road nonprofit
organization with a mission to promote responsible outdoor recreation through ethics education and stewardship
programs, and the Keep Havasu Beautiful Committee.
Sue Guibord, the club‟s clean-up coordinator, was especially pleased with the turnout, the cooperative weather, and the
amount of trash collected. “I would say we did about as good a job as possible considering the size of the area and the
amount of trash which was scattered all over the terrain.”
Bruce Speirs, another member, stated “As an off road enthusiast and sport shooter I am dismayed at what we keep
finding. It‟s not OK to shoot stuff to pieces and then just leave it in the desert. This gives both activities a black eye and
leads to land closures. A few will wreck it for the many.” Sue Guibord said she discovered Ryan Dvorak, a LHC resident, also out in the area collecting trash. “He and a friend
make weekly visits to do this. He was pleased to see us there too.”
The group was assisted by three employees from the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office, Allied Waste Services, who
provided the trash containers at no cost, and About Time Portable Toilets.
Later this month the club intends to commence another season of fencing off dangerous mine shafts and removing junk
vehicles from the desert. Working in conjunction with the BLM, these efforts will involve days of hard work and the
driving of many miles of trails over the next several months.

Boriana / Copper World
T his run encompassed a few trails us folks have not run before in the canyons around the Boriana Mine. Six jeeps and twelve members took the first track which led us up high on to the ridgeline above the Boriana
Mine -quite the view from here. The route is hardly used
and ends at the top of sheer cliff after coming around a
blind curve – “Whoa Nellie!” Thank goodness for the big
rock in the road just before it. The next track led us to the
substantial remains of the Copper World mine and mill.
Several buildings, lots of mining relics, old stuff, plus
several mine openings to gawk at. Then it was off to the
Bull Canyon Mine and Black Jack Claims. This track was
„scruffy‟ and actively being reclaimed from lack of use. We
passed two mine buildings a short way in and then at the
midway point we found three more. We stopped to explore
and take it in the history. Getting late we decided to take a
„short cut‟ and drove north on Flag Mine road to the
“escalator” trail down thru Walnut Canyon. As the sun
was setting on us and we hadn‟t yet exited the canyon a
spirited discussion was held over the radio about whose
smart idea this „short cut‟ was. The debate continues to
this day but I‟m sure glad I had no part in this fiasco! With
the highway 5 miles distant we came upon a couple from
New Zealand broke down on the trail - and just as we
approached their tire fell off! Being the great folks we are
we all jumped out and set Ladell & Darryld to work.
Eventually everyone else pitched in to help out (I made
continuous instructive comments) and we got these people
back on the trail “so they could continue to explore the
desert by themselves.” Is there a lesson here?
A big „thank you‟ to Ladell and Judy Olson for Tail
Gunning.

Trail Talk - 5 - December 2012
Don‟t be a pestering me about how long this run will take. How the heck
should I know? I tell time by looking at the shadow of a stick stuck in the
sand. It‟s an off road run over rocks, in sandy washes, with pokey things that
goes a fair spell out into the wilderness. It‟s what us old timers in the Arizona
Territory call fun adventures. Now go out side, get „cha a stick and tell time.”
“And if you‟re so concerned over how long it‟s gonna take just listen up to
another issue us Trail,Bosses deal with. What in the Sam Hill are you folks
thunk‟n who shows up to the meet spot at the depature time? The club dun
proclaimed us Trail Bosses have just 20 minutes from the meet‟n time to the
depart‟n time for us to get all ready. We got‟s ta get the wagons lined up,
smoke signals set, snake oil given out, names checked off, trail pointed out,
and all the lanterns lit. That 20 minutes is MY TIME, not yours to be spent fer
extra snooz‟n or loafing over the cookstove at the home stead. And if we hit
the trail pronto we gets back sooner too. So meet at the meet time!
The Donner Party in 1849 started out late and it dern near kilt all of them
poor green horns in the Sierras. You like airing up in the dark? Here‟s a hint
– the next time you think to be late or whiny just have your Misses watch the
folks and she‟ll see them there eyes a rolling, and some snickering and a
mumbling going on. That‟s what Wyatt Earp calls „a clue.‟

Cherum Peak/Cerbat Mountains November 2, 2012
F ive jeeps and nine members set off for the Cerbat Mountains which are located west of Kingman. We found the trail head 11 miles north of town off Stockton Hill Road and away west on Canyon Shadow we
bumped. The elevation started at 3,850‟ and as we drove it
climbed higher and higher till we ran out of trail and
mountain at 7,000‟ on top. The track continues west and
down to Chloride from this point. You are no longer allowed
to drive this portion of the old 4X4 mine roads it is now a
designated hiking path - too bad for us. The view from on top
was incredible and lunch under green piñon pines was great.
A few interesting side tracks remain to be driven and will be
included in future runs in this area. We exited via Vock
Canyon. “Thanks” to Ladell & Judy Olson for Tail Gunning.

B/D Roulette Mine
O n Thursday, November 8, nineteen members of the Havasu 4 Wheelers and two guests in twelve vehicles left the scenic turnout for a day of fun and adventure. We had a perfect day for the run with over-
cast skies, no wind and very little dust. We encountered
two small groups of burros who were very willing to get
close to our jeeps looking for a handout, but they came
away disappointed. There were no problems until the
very last obstacle in Whipple Wash when the trailboss
high-centered; however he was able to place a rock at a
strategic point and drive away unscathed. Special thanks
goes to Jim and Joanne Malara for tailgunning, to Snake
and Willie Williams for taking care of the AED and the
trauma kit and to my navigator Bill Mitschele. Thanks
also goes to all who ventured out with me; we all had a
good time.

Desert Bar-Back Way
O n Sunday, October 28th, eleven jeeps met at the Scenic Look Out to take the back road run to the Desert Bar. Three of the jeeps were guests who want to be members. In all there were 13 members and 7 guest.
The trip was uneventful with several jeeps doing extra
credit side trips. Thanks to Snake & Willie for tail gunning
and to Bruce & Kathlyne for leading the group around the
extra credits.

Northwest Passage November 14, 2012
W e started the run across from the turn for Havasu
Heights with a mix of seasoned members and guests.
This run is rated a 3 but some of the jeepers
questioned this rating as we came upon our first waterfall.
Mother Nature had definitely removed some of the sand
that was there last year, but with this group it didn‟t
matter……up and over without any problems. The same
held true for a go around that was more washed out than
usual.
We were lucky enough to see 3 burros on the trail and a
couple of jack rabbits but no big horn sheep even though we
were in their lambing area. Toward the end of the run we
did the optional hills, which always brings a smile to my
face.
I want to say thank you to Mike Beets for carrying the AED
and trauma kit and a special Thank You to Larry Lutz for
being a great tail gunner……never had to worry where the
end of the group was.

Eagle Pass
F riday Nov 16thsaw 8 jeeps, 13 members, and 1
guest head out to explore Eagle Pass in the
Sacramento Mountains west of Needles. This is
an easy but fun run for folks looking to have an
interesting day in the desert. On the way the group
stopped at the Topoc Maze geoglyphs - significant
spiritual and cultural ground markings created by
ancient Mohave Indians. The group then continued on
to Needles and began the off road trek west toward the
pass. We made several stops along the way to examine
various mining activities. Once on the east side of the
mountains we continued until the lunch buzzer
sounded. This part of the desert sees few visitors so
“perfect solitude” would be a great descriptor for the
area. We then proceeded back east through
Monumental Pass stopping along the way to examine a
mine with quartz rock. Once back at US 95 the group
aired up and departed east for Arizona and home. I had
a nice time leading a good group with no problems
encountered.A big “Thanks” to Rodger Delk for tail
gunning.

Swansea Ghost Town November 20, 2012
W hen this run was posted it got twice as many jeeps as
slots so it was split into two groups. I took the 8:30
AM group of 13 members and 1 guest in 7 jeeps. We
departed the Scenic Turn Out, did a quick stop in Parker,
and then headed east on Shea Road. We stopped at the
intersection of the Swansea Road to air down and also to
locate a nearby geoglyph of a snake. We found it after a little
searching. Before we could leave we had our first trail repair
when a bolt was discovered missing from a sway bar. Mike
Beets jumped right in and took care of business. Off the 17
miles of dirt road to Swansea we went. Arriving in „town‟ we
noticed the BLM had performed restoration work on the
miner‟s bunk houses, installed new kiosks, and a self-guided
trail system with interpretive signage. Made it much easier
figuring out what all the buildings were for and what every-
thing else was. Back in the jeeps and off north-east to the Bill
Williams River. There is no bridge so we had to ford the river
which was at its normal level and presented no issue for the
group. We lunched in the shade of the Mesquite trees. Off
again and then north into the Rawhide Mtns. We turned west
and crossed Castaneda Wash to West Mohave Wash and
finally found SR 95. This was a long run at 120 miles of
mostly bumpy, dusty desert with one wet spot. Everyone did
great and no whining was heard (over the radio at least). Few
people make the effort to go this far out but this group of
intrepid Havasu 4 Wheelers proved we do. A big „Thanks‟ to
Chuck & Sue Guibord for tail gunning.

A few years after Charles Lindbergh flew his Spirit of St. Louis from New York to France, another pilot flying along the Colorado River first noticed giant drawings on the desert floor north of Blythe, California. One of the earth figures measured 176 feet in length. Since then, more than two-hundred images have been discovered along the river from Nevada to the Gulf of California. All told, six-hundred-plus geoglyphs have been recorded in the Southwest
and nearby areas of Mexico.
Known also as intaglio, it's not known if geoglyphs are two-hundred years old or ten thousand. These giant ground
paintings depict geometric designs, human form and animal figures. Many have withstood the test of wind, rain and time,
others having fallen recent victim to motorcycles, SUV's, quads and General George S. Patton's tank-training exercises
during WWII.
Geoglyphs were made by carving away the darker top layer of rock in the moonscape desert, revealing a lighter sand and
subsurface. The difference in color and relief produce distinct images that scientists can't agree on age. Some argue they
were made one to two hundred years ago, while others think they've been around since before the calendar changed from
B.C. to A.D.
It's believed intaglios were made by ancestors of today's Native Americans living along the Colorado River. Perhaps the
drawings are messages to their gods or ancestors, a common theme throughout human civilization. It's unlikely the
graphics served other purpose because you can't discern most from the ground without knowing exactly what to look for.
Even from a nearby hilltop, distance and angle make viewing nearly impossible. From an airplane, you'll fly circles for
hours unless you know the precise location of a geoglyph. They're just hard to find, but easy to see once located.
Some geoglyphs depict what might be a horse. If so, this means some intaglios are recent in history because Native
Americans didn't come into contact with equestrian animals until introduced by the Europeans after Columbus
discovered America.
Geoglyphs are classified as rock art, which also includes pictographs and petroglyphs. Pictographs are rock paintings
while petroglyphs are rock engravings. Pictographs are generally found in coastal mountain ranges while petroglyphs are
more often found in the desert. Intaglios are often located near the Colorado River.
To understand the meaning of geoglyphs, an observer must be familiar with the complex and sophisticated symbolism of
Native American culture. There are multiple interpretations of not only earth drawings but all rock art. It depends on
who you consult. Native Americans have their own version, much of which is spiritually based. On the other hand, there
are archeologists who prefer mythical interpretation. Religious scholars are able to see in geoglyphs ancient themes that
appear not only in North American cultures, but in other cultures around the globe. But the bottom line is that all
intaglios provide a unique window into Native American rituals, beliefs, and artistic abilities.
The Internet has been providing new glimpse and interpretation of rock art. With thousands of amateur and professional
archaeologists sharing discoveries online, they've found some Native American rock-art symbolism that is identical to that
found in other parts of the world. This means ancient people from other cultures must have migrated here thousands of
years ago (or vice versa).
Most interesting are those experts who find geoglyph interpretation that parallels myth and legend found in all of
humanity, suggesting that all cultures on earth had origin from a single, common influence. New scholars are pursing the
study of sacred, ancient mysteries and the way these stories appear to be repeating themselves not only in other cultures
but in our own time. The origin of Christianity, for example, contains ancient, hidden iconography, which some experts
use to suggest that contemporary myths are really the same as those from bygone cultures and time.
Given the huge volume of rock art worldwide, one thing seems apparent: rock-art sites were as plentiful then as are
churches today. Expression was important and widespread; the same
as is religious worship today. And rock art expression must have been
as sacred for them as religion is for people today. The Snake is located about 10 miles east of Parker on Shea Road, near a
T intersection with a dirt road that leads south. The site isn't but 1,000
feet southeast of this corner. The geoglyph lies atop a dark-colored
terrace devoid of vegetation. (GPS coordinates: N34 07 26.3 - W114 04
26.0) Here’s an aerial photograph. Be sure to scroll down to see the
snake’s head and eyes.
The Fisherman intaglio depicts a man suspending a spear, with two fish
shown below, a sun and serpent above. This geoglyph is located in the
foothills of the Plomosa Mountains on the paved road from Bouse to
Quartzsite. You can't find the Fisherman without first finding the dirt
road that leads you to it. Because this intaglio is small, it's hard to spot
even if you were directly overhead in an airplane. The dirt road begins
on the inside curve of the highway just before it turns westward and
descends from the mountain range onto rugged desert plains. (GPS
coordinates: N33 47 26.53 W114 05 40.04) The Snake - Observe closely to see the eyes, which
are in the extreme lower right of the photo.

LEAVE A GOOD IMPRESSION
- HAVASU 4 WHEELERS TRAIL RATINGS - - Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.
RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.

Havasu 4 Wheeler of the Year 2012 Note: Your vote for the “Havasu 4 Wheeler of the Year” should not be influenced solely by his or her offroad
driving skills. Also merit them by what they have contributed to the club during the past year. Are they active,
participating members? Are they ready to lend a helping hand? Do they get involved?
Write in the name below of the member(s) voted for. You may vote for one individual member or a membership
(example: husband & wife) as their name(s) appear on the active club roster. You may turn your ballot in at the
December meeting or mail it to the address on the back of the newsletter, by January 4th, 2013.
