SINBAD AND HIS CREW

There are lots of different interpretations of the character of Sinbad. He had lots of different names too, according to which story you read.

What we do know is that he is a sailor, in charge of a crew of other sailors on a boat. He goes on journeys, looking for treasure and adventure.

In our production, Vic Llewellyn plays Sinbad although as each tale is told, the other actors play him when he was younger.

Page 3: Have a Go at The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor

What sort of Sinbad would you be? Or which crew member would you be?Where is the most exotic place you have visited? What treasure would you look for? What has been your greatest adventure?

Colour in the rehearsal!

In our production, Sinbad is a fisherman.

GETTING SHIP SHAPE

Can you design your own boat? How big is it? What features does it have? What noise does it make? Where do the crew sleep? If it were shipwrecked, what would happen to it?And what is a good name for a fishing boat? Remember that traditionally boats have female names.

Spot the difference! There are six things different from one picture to the next. Can you find them?

THIS IS MY ISLAND

Sinbad is always getting shipwrecked! When he does he usually ends up in another strange land.

Imagine that you are shipwrecked. You wake up in a strange place. You think you are on your own. Ahead of you is a strange place. Behind you is the sea; you can see your boat sinking in the water.

Design, draw, create your island.

What would you find on it? What might you eat? What is it made of?Where might you sleep?Who might you meet?

Imagine that you go for a walk and ahead of you are three paths. One to the left, one to the right and one in the middle. What happens along each one?

Write a story about your island adventure...

the old lady of the sea...

and a man eating ogre...

Sinbad’s adventures put him face to face with all sorts of monsters and creatures.

Page 12: Have a Go at The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor

It’s time to create your own creature!

How does it move? What noise does it make?Does it have a catch phrase?Does it have any special powers? What does it eat?How does it attack?

Try drawing it.Or describe it with interesting verbs or adjectives.Create your own Sinbad story about your creature.

Page 14: Have a Go at The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor

Now’s the time to put together everything you have discovered about your very own Sinbad the Sailor, into your own story.

Here is a simple formula from which you can make your own adven-ture:

A.INTRODUCE SINBADB.WHAT IS HIS BOAT LIKE AND WHO IS THE CREW?C.HOW, AND WHERE DOES HE GET SHIPWRECKED?D.WHAT CREATURES DOES HE MEET?E.WHAT TROUBLE DOES HE GET INTO?F.HOW DOES HE ESCAPE?

Try writing it into a story.Or drawing it as a cartoon strip, or a storyboard.Maybe even make a simple puppet show with your friends.

BON VOYAGE
