In the Spotlight: Faculty Member
Joseph Diémé, Department of World Languages and Cultures
A native of Senegal, West
Africa, Professor Joseph Diémé came to Humboldt State
in 2006. After achieving two MA’s and a Ph.D. in
Postcolonial Francophone studies, Joseph joined the
World Languages and Cultures Department here at HSU.
Professor Diémé enjoys the slow pace of life on the
North Coast and finds the environment productive for
research. Diémé describes teaching as a “cathartic”
experience. This semester, Joseph has taught French 2,
French Conversation, and a literature and language
based course focusing on the French Revolution, and its
effects on modern fiction.
Looking toward the future, Joseph is excited about
a new study abroad program, expected to launch in
2015. He plans to take students to Senegal to study, and
live with Senegalese families. Students will focus on
service learning, studying local language, and making
lasting connections abroad, as well as learning about
the history and culture of Africa, social justice, and the
environment.
Outside of the classroom, Joseph plans to finish his
second book this summer, examining President
Obama’s first term from a postcolonial perspective.

Commencement
The AHSS Commencement is Saturday, May 17. This is an
official “Faculty Academic Workday.”
Your attendance at Commencement is very important to
students and their families and is our opportunity, as a
College, to honor the accomplishments of our graduating
class.
If, due to extraordinary circumstances, you do not
anticipate being able to attend the Commencement
ceremonies, please let Ken know
([email protected]) by Wednesday. (This
also helps us get a headcount for seating arrangements.)
In addition, please let us know if there are any special
needs, such as for mobility. Please assemble for
Commencement in the Field House (next to the Student
Recreation Center) no later than 7:45 a.m. Ceremonies
