A habitat is the immediate environment in which an organism (an animal or plant) lives. Habitats can be big (like a jungle) or small (like a leaf); however, animals need five things to survive in their habitat: food, water, air, shelter and a place to raise young. Have to Have a Habitat Get creative and use what you have around the house! You could use cardboard, a shoe box, clay, blocks or toy bricks, etc. to build a display or you could draw it out on paper! Choose a habitat such as the ocean, arctic or forest. Choose the materials to make your display. Do you want to build something? Would you prefer to draw it out on paper? Be creative! Include all the animals, plants and features (mountains, lakes, etc.) that live in the habitat. Don't forget to include the animals' five needs! No matter where an animal lives, it interacts with other animals and organisms. Discuss with your child what would happen if an animal or organism were removed from their habitat. Some animals live successfully in more than one habitat. What is an adaptation? How does it help an animal to survive?
