TEAL-JONES – Manufacturing Forest Products Since 1946

Margaret and Jack Jones began Teal Cedar Products on the banks of theFraser River where the group is headquartered today.

Tom and Dick Jones, CEO, President and Visionaries of Teal-JonesGroup.

Fourth generation (Dick Jones’ grandchildren) Jack and Alex Gardnerpulling Western Red Cedar lumber off the green chain at the firm’sSalmon Arm facility. At Teal-Jones, family members that work for thefamily business must begin in the mill and work their way up.

From 1999 to 2004, Teal made thestrategic decision to purchase TFLs (TreeFarm Licenses), which provide directaccess to harvesting timber in specificareas. These large acquisitions (inexcess of 100,000 ha) have positionedthe company to be less reliant on the logmarket conditions when obtaining rawfiber for their mills. While the companystill purchases logs on the open market, they are not completely dependent on themarket as many other manufacturers are. This positions Teal Cedar Products as theonly shake and shingle mill on the Coastto have its own source of raw fiber, whichassures our valued customers of not onlya consistently high quality product but asteady and dependable source of it. The company is extremely proud of itsenvironmental stewardship and notesthat to date they have planted over 9 mil-lion seedlings. In 2003, The Teal-Jones Group unveiledthe first high speed sawmill to be built onthe coast of BC in 24 years - The J.S.Jones mill (named after Jack SheldonJones). This 40 million dollar investment wascreated to maximize production of 2ndGrowth Coastal Fiber. The Jones broth-ers reasoned that as they began to har-vest areas already logged 70-80 yearsearlier, the timber they were going toencounter would be smaller in diameterand would require different equipment toprocess efficiently. This state of the artfacility can produce over 500,000 FMBper 8 hour shift.Stag Timber & J.S. Jones produce a vari-ety of products from Dimensional,Appearance Grade, Industrials, Timbers,Structural Lumber, Premium Decking,Export Clears Japanese TraditionalSquare Edge, Studs, Structural SelectedMerch, Fascia to Decking, and a widerange of other products.Teal Cedar – Red Cedar Lumber Divisionproduces Appearance Grade, ExportClears, Fine Grain Industrials, Decking,Siding, and other specialties. The latest expansion has taken placesouth of the border in Sumas, Wa. InMarch of 2005, the brothers opened upTeal-Jones Lumber Services which offersplaner and kiln services along with MSRcapabilities. The Teal-Jones Group employs over a1000 people and operates throughoutB.C. and in Washington State. Teal pro-duces the highest quality products toservice our customers in the U.S.Canada, England, Germany, Japan,Korea, Australia, China, Ukraine, Franceand other markets throughout the world.Tom & Dick attribute the success of thisbusiness to the hard work and dedicationof their employees and the loyalty andcommitment demonstrated by the cus-tomers. The company is now entering into thefourth generation of a family owned andoperated business and looks forward tothe opportunities for further growth andexpansion in the coming years. As long term planners for the company,Tom and Dick wish to announce theirretirement dates as May 15, 2041 andMarch 24, 2047 respectively, when thebrothers will celebrate their 100th birth-day. Therefore, we look forward to manymore years of working together with ouremployees and our dedicated customers.

SSuurrrreeyy,, BB..CC..——The Teal-Jones Groupis a fully integrated Forest Companywhich encompasses everything from thetimber harvesting to manufacturing andsales of finished products. The Teal-Jones Group has remained a privatelyowned and operated family business withbrothers Tom and Dick Jones as CEO,President and Visionaries. The 1946 company began as a one-machine shingle mill owned and operatedby Jack Sheldon Jones. In 1962, Jack built Teal Cedar Products(four-shingle machine mill) on the banksof the Fraser River where the group isheadquartered today. Shortly after

establishing Teal, Jack passed awayleaving his three sons, Tom, Dick andHarry (deceased 1976) the fledglingoperation with 11 employees. Over the years the Teal Cedar Shake &Shingle mill has grown and expanded itsfacilities to meet the increasing demandsfor its products. Always the innovators,Teal added the Reman (Rebutted andRejointed Sidewall Shingles) along withthe paint finishing system, and specialtyproducts division. The company expand-ed its investment in the industry by build-ing new Shake and Shingle Mills through-out various communities in BritishColumbia during the 70’s and 80’s.

In the late 1970’s the brothers decided tobecome involved in the lumber industryand built Stag Timber which focused oncutting high-value grade logs and customcutting for their customers. This facilityhas since been retooled to accommodatenew efficiencies and the latest technolo-gy to cut Hemlock, Douglas Fir, Spruce,Cypress (Yellow Cedar) and WesternRed Cedar. In 1993, the purchase of a Timber WestSawmill and Forest License provided thecompany with 2 ingredients needed toenhance and develop the overall organi-zation – a larger sawmill and directaccess to raw fiber.

MM ii ss ss ii ss ss aa uu gg aa ,, OO nn tt .. ——Weston WoodSolutions Inc. is an innovative and diversi-fied supplier of lumber and engineeredwood products to manufacturers and dis-tributors in North America and around theworld. Productssourced from China include primed trimboards, doorframes, window extensionand specialty items like Adirondack chairsand garden sheds. Chinese Fir is the pre-ferred material for trim boards, frames andoutdoor furniture due to the excellent dura-bility characteristics of the lumber. LVL isused for many other millwork items suchas mullion posts, where superior strengthand stability are required.A similar approach is used by Weston in

Chile. Mauricio Bravo is the ProductManager for South America, and previous-ly worked for a Radiata Pine sawmill andmillwork plant in Concepcion, Chile. “Wemoved Mauricio and his family to Toronto 4years ago, and he has added a sophisti-cated level of expertise and created abroad resource base for our Radiata Pinesourcing that is unmatched even by com-panies many times our size” says Lechem.By coincidence, Mauricio was visiting sup-pliers and Weston’s Quality Control teamin the Concepcion area when the massiveearthquake struck on February 27th of this

year. What turned out to be bad timing forMauricio was actually fortunate forWeston, as they were able to receive first-hand reports from the area and rapidlymake contingency plans. By having alarge pool of suppliers, providing them with

MMaarrsshhaallll,, TTeexxaass——Reaching the mile-stone of 75 years of continuous operationwould ordinarily indicate a companysteeped in a rigid business practice and aresistance to change. This is not the casefor Snider Industries. Change, new chal-lenges and the unwavering commitment toimprovement are embraced by the compa-ny leadership in an effort to perfect opera-tions and customer service. SniderIndustries, a third-generation, family-owned operation, embraced the opportu-nity to create a custom information man-agement system unique to their needs. In 2007, after years of investigativeresearch, Snider commissionedShreveport, Louisiana IT companyPraeses, to create and deliver a new andinnovative information management solu-tion. The Praeses team was tasked withcreating a system specific not only to thelumber manufacturing industry, but also toSnider Industries and their workflow. “After endless attempts to force manyexisting forest products systems into fittingour needs, I knew we were going to haveto pursue our own, unique informationmanagement system. We chose thePraeses team, and worked in partnershipwith them through providing industryinsight and operations specific to SniderIndustries. We created a 21st centurysolution,” said Jill Snider Parr, SniderIndustries owner. Praeses project manag-er, Lee Hearn, facilitated the developmentof a system that used Intuit’s QuickBooksEnterprise as the base and added custommodules for the three industry specificareas of service: timber acquisition, fueldistribution and lumber inventory/sales.Additionally, a planned web portal willallow lumber customers to access theirinformation and check available inventorylevels at the click of a mouse. Snider Industries and Praeses have cre-ated a more productive and streamlinedsystem that offers a maintainable, user-friendly interface. Custom systems, suchas Snider’s, optimize a company’s produc-tivity and ultimately provide better serviceto its valued customers. “Jill is very technology savvy and isfocused on productivity and customerservice. Praeses worked collaborativelywith Snider in all phases of the project toproduce a solution that precisely matchestheir industry-leading business process-es,” said Rob Parker, Mgr. of ITConsulting.” Snider Industries is a rare classic in theforest products industry. Without losingthe individuality of private ownership, hon-est business practices, proficiency or con-servationism; Snider has evolved through-out its history, by focusing on the utilizationof every resource available for growth. “We have spent over forty years perfect-ing our manufacturing and drying process-es to produce the highest quality one inchboards in large volumes. This allows us tohave most items available in our ware-house so our customers can count onavailability whenever they need it,” saidParr. Snider Industries is able to maintain con-sistency and weather stormy markets dueto the full utilization of the company’sresources of timberlands and self-generat-ed power. This characteristic has alwaysprovided stability to customers andallowed for continued improvement to thecompany’s technologies and procedures.Snider’s success is attributable primarilyto the production of the finest quality oneinch boards available in the market. Theingredients of that success are pervasivein every area of their business. • Lumber is steam-dried in conventional

steam kilns at 180o F for three days, then equalized for about two weeks, allowing the lumber to regain moisture

In addition to purchasing timber from the open market, Snider’s inten-sively managed land base of over 42,000 acres helps it to maintain asteady supply of raw materials for its sawmill operations.

Snider’s lumber manufacturing process is shown here is the first initialprocess of shaving logs to maximize usage for end product 1” boards. Customer trucks are able to load, weigh and tarp inside the 220,000

board foot capacity warehouse with dry and dust-free delivery of fin-ished lumber.

content guaranteed to be below 15%.Snider prefers the conventional kilns, not the high-temperature kilns used bymost mills. This process allows for asoft, pliable board suitable for multiplepurposes including millwork and pat-terns. All of Snider’s lumber receives aSPIB HT Grademark of D & Better, #2or #3; and a moisture content mark of15%, including 4’ and 6’ shorts product.

• With a fully enclosed facility of over220,000 square feet of finished lumber storage and loading, Snider pridesitself on the clean, dry and dust-freedelivery of their finished lumber. Thelumber stays under roof and is neverexposed to elements once the drying

process is complete. Customer trucksare able to load, weigh and tarp insidethe massive building. Snider can pro-vide most items for immediate, same-day shipment.

• The planer mill has three productionlines including a separate pattern line. All of Snider’s patterns are available in#2 and D & Better. All #2 patterns arerun from a selected highline #2 stock, not “#2 Common”. Pattern and S4Smaterial is available in dimensions of 1x 4 through 1 x 12, and 8 through 16foot lengths.

• Timber is at the heart of every sawmilloperation and it’s no different forSnider.

• In addition to purchasing timber fromthe open market, Snider’s intensivelymanaged land base of over 42,000acres helps it to maintain a steady sup-ply of raw materials for its sawmilloperations.
