SO YOU’RE AN AMERICAN? A GUIDE TO ANSWERING DIFFICULT QUESTIONS ABROAD
1
HAVING A PLAN
Before you go out, think about what
you’re comfortable talking about and
what might be off-limits. Try to plan for
what to do if you encounter topics that
feel too private or uncomfortable, or
conversations that seem inappropriate.
• Try to tailor your responses to the host culture and develop culturally
appropriate responses to intrusive questions.
• Remember, humor can go a long way.
• Have a handful of positive things to say about the people and the
culture you’re in.

IN CONVERSATION
Active Listening
Eye Contact
Body Language
Be engaged in the conversation, actively respond, and ask relevant questions if necessary.
Generally, it’s good to maintain eye contact, but this will depend on the situation. Customs regarding eye contact vary across cultures and different rules may apply when communicating with the opposite gender.
Know proper greetings and common expectations for personal space in order to make the conversation comfortable. Try to avoid sitting with your arms crossed, as it can appear unfriendly or unengaged.

It helps to get familiar with the
expectations for normal conversation in
your new culture. Like any skill, the more
you learn and the more you get out there
and practice, the easier things become.
As you’re getting started, be sure to take
cues from the people with whom you are
communicating. This will help you navigate
many conversations more smoothly. It will
also help you adjust your own expectations
over time.
