Five years ago, Joseph Ting,
in one of his (in)famous
discussions, enlightened me about
the contributions of ASHRAE to
Society and the obligation as the
beneficiaries of the hard work of
all of those who came before us to
jump in and do the best we can to
move the society forward in the
best direction possible.
So that is what I will try to do this year.

OUTGOING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – Albert Hahn, P.E.
Aloha ASHRAE Hawaii,
It has been my pleasure serving as your
president in ASHRAE Society Year 2009-10. As
I depart from my office as president, I would
like to offer my congratulations and support for
your new president Michael Chang. Also, I
would like to offer this challenge to the chapter
in general, get off the sidelines and get
involved!
ASHRAE, as you all know, is a volunteer based organization. Our great
organization has served to provide research and education internationally
as most importantly has served as an advocate for our mechanical
engineering community. Without volunteers none of this could ever take
place. I encourage everyone who is not involved to become a contributor
and not just a consumer. I assure you from my own experience that your
service will not only benefit our community, but that you will learn and
grow through your experience.
There is a lot of work left to do so remember that many hands will make the
work easy!
Mahalo for your support!
Albert Hahn, P.E.

From the Editor
Another year…same old, same old? I don’t think so. The economic
challenges that blaze in headlines across our nation are not just
affecting us here in Hawaii but are global and we need to think in
terms of how we are positioned to survive or thrive during these
coming months. Our customers are affected and that affects us – now
what to do about it?
How do we leverage ASHRAE’s breadth and depth of information and
resources into better value for our customers and transition that to
actual revenue for our companies? How does our membership in one of
the most prestigious and respected professional organizations in the
world position us in the competitive field of HVAC?
Consider inviting a potential client to one of our Chapter meetings
where an industry expert is delivering a talk that could specifically
address your customer’s challenge. Consider participating in one of
our numerous committees to meet the brightest minds in ASHRAE so
you can apply that acquired knowledge to your business. Consider
serving the Chapter in one of the many volunteer positions and
becoming the face of ASHRAE to community groups who thirst for
real expertise and not just a sales pitch.
Another year…to shine…to sulk…to take action for the future. I hope
you take that action and become more active in our great Chapter and
Society! Kevin Saito, P.E. LEED AP

Technical Seminar
I am Melek Yalcintas. I received a Bachelor of
Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in
Mechanical Engineering from Orta Dogu Teknik
Universitesi, Ankara Turkey. In 1990, I came to the
United States to pursue Doctorate studies. In 1995,
I received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from
Lehigh University. Following a short post doctoral
period, I moved to Hawaii and taught at the
University of Hawaii at Manoa, Mechanical
Engineering Department, for about three years. In 2000, I made a move to
industry practice, and since then I have been doing consulting engineering
and research work for the building industry, mostly dealing with HVAC
design, energy efficiency, and sustainability. I am very comfortably settled
in Hawaii and am tremendously enjoying working with the many
professionals in the engineering and architectural fields and building
management. Currently, I work for AMEL Technologies, Inc, which I have
established it in 2004. I love nature and outdoors.
I am looking forward to serving the ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter this term as
the Technical Seminar Chair.

Chapter Technology Transfer
As the President-Elect, I chair the Chapter
Technology Transfer Committee, which serves as
an umbrella for the Chapter Programs,
Technology Awards. Energy, Refrigeration and
Governmental Affairs Committee.
I will assist our Chapter Programs Chair Blake Araki to schedule our
monthly meeting technical session and main program event. This is always
a daunting task, since the attendance at the monthly meetings is usually
directly proportional to the quality of our speakers. We will survey the
members to ensure that we provide interesting topics for our membership.
The first speaker for this year will be an ASHRAE Distinguished
Lecturer, who is also our current ASHRAE Vice President, Dr. William
Bahnfleth, P.E. He will speak on the topic related to chilled water pumping
systems. I am looking forward to hearing this knowledge that he has agreed
to share with us. The CTTC Chair is also responsible for working with our
local municipalities to make sure that they have whatever technical
expertise that our chapter has, in order to support their efforts to make
Hawaii building environments as energy efficient, comfortable and healthy
as possible. I will be working with our Governmental Affairs Chair Barry
Jim On to keep the regulations heading in the right direction.
Switching to the Society CTTC technology awards program, we have
technologically innovative projects here in Hawaii that are deserving of
international recognition. Hawaii possesses the most unique climate and
geography in the United States which allows us to be technically innovative
with the design and construction of our mechanical systems. ASHRAE can
provide a platform for the most technologically innovative local projects to
gain some international recognition.
The Society Technology Award serves to recognize our ASHRAE
members who utilize innovative technologies, and also to highlight
technological achievements to other members, associated professionals and
societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners. Projects
classifications consist of Commercial, Institutional, Health Care, Industrial,
Public Assembly, Residential (single and multi‐family, low or high rise),
and alternative or renewable energy use. Guidelines as well as entry forms
Page 20
may be found at our Society website. Click this URL address for CTTC
activities and programs http://www.ashrae.org/members/page/310, then,
scroll down to the Society Technology Awards programs.
To recognize our local chapter members for their outstanding design
and innovations for effective energy utilization, the chapter is currently
soliciting the technical staff from all consulting firms and contracting
companies to submit qualifying entries to the Chapter CTTC Committee for
competition. We would recommend that you use the Short Form
application, which should be downloadable for your perusal. Note that
sample of how the short form is filled‐out is also available for your use. If
you needed assistance, email me at [email protected]. All submittals must
be received prior to February 28, 2011. Judging will take place on March 11,
2011. The result of the competition will be announced at the April monthly
meeting on 4/14/11. Only the winner for each category will be forwarded
through our region to the Society for further competition worldwide.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues pertaining to
chapter programs, technology, energy, refrigeration and governmental
affairs that need my attention immediately. Otherwise, contact the
following chairperson for the various sub-committees:
1. Chapter Programs Chair Blake Araki [email protected]
2. Technology Chair Herman Siu - [email protected]
3. Energy Awards Chair William Lee - [email protected]
4. Refrigeration Chair Scott LaBeau - [email protected]
5. Governmental Affairs Chair Barry Jim On -
Let us know if you have any technical subjects that we should consider for
our monthly meetings.

Historical Committee Chairman: Joseph Ting, P.E., P.Eng.,
CxAEach year, the chapter starts with a new president, who will lead us
through his vision & mission to enhance theadvancement of the arts and sciences associated withour HVAC&R industry & its community. Thehistorical committee takes the lead to document theactivities for the current year, so that no stones areleft unturned. Towards that end, I welcome as manypast presidents and past members of the Board ofGovernors to participate in this committee. You arethe resources and the lifeblood of our chapter.
As the chapter commences with a new decade,we are preparing ourselves at the upcoming CRC 2010 in Reno, Nevada to see ifwe could request the Society Annual or Winter Meeting be held in Honolulu in2020, when our chapter will complete this decade and simultaneously celebratethe Chapter’s 50th Anniversary as well as the Society’s 125th Anniversary.
It was just like yesterday when I stepped-in to lead this great chapter inSociety Year 2008-09. And, as we speak, even Albert Hahn has completed hisyear thus passing-on the baton to Michael Chang. With the new leadership forSociety Year 2010-11, you will see more interaction between our chapter and thepublic, as Michael’s new job at Hawaii Energy has allowed him to develop anappreciation of how media relationship can move our chapter’s message out infront into the limelight through the advocacy pertaining to the energy issues.
To recap what the Historical Committee didlast year, we issued seven publications. Of which, three issues dealt with “Hawaii Chapter – TheBeginning”, “The Chartered & ProspectiveMembers” and, “The Spouses of DedicatedASHRAE Volunteers”. We then published the 4th
issue entitled “The 1st Heat Pump Water HeatingSystem in Hawaii.” As our chapter celebrated its40th Anniversary of its founding, our 5th issue was
published to share with those who didn’t have the pleasure to participate andhave missed a great opportunity at the celebration in Waikiki Outrigger CanoeClub. The 6th issue pretty much described “The ASHRAE Fellows in ourchapter”. The last of the series featured “One of the Oldest MechanicalContracting Firms – Heide & Cook Limited”.
That being said, Mahalo to our past members: Martites Calad, Boyd Chee,Rory Itano, Donna Kishi, Earle Matsuda, and Paul Scott. Their generouscontributions to the historical activities are profoundly appreciated.
Page 22
ASHRAE HAWAII REFRIGERATION CHAIR
I have the great opportunity to represent ASHRAE HAWAII as the
Refrigeration Chair and a new member of the board of governors. In addition
to providing updates on new refrigeration technology, I get to work with
Alayna and coordinate the annual refrigeration plant tour for YEA and chapter
members.
Last year’s event was held at the Ice Palace for a tour of the low
temperature refrigeration plant. ASHRAE Hawaii will offer another
informative refrigeration plant tour in the next couple of months. A few
suggestions include Dave’s Ice Cream factory, an Ice Making facility and the
Yard House custom refrigeration system required for the processing of barley
and hops. Should we vote on this one?
I am employed with DMG Hawaii, a manufacturer’s representative who
specializes in custom AC and dehumidification systems. I graduated from
Michigan Tech University, a small engineering school in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan. I guess refrigeration is a good place for me as the frigid temperature
reached minus 70F (-57C) in the winter months with the wind chill factor. I left
the cold Midwest and moved to Southern California working for the York
Engineered Machinery division of Borg Warner and then moved to a Carrier
distributor, US Air Conditioning, the world’s largest privately owned air
conditioning distributor. After numerous visits to Hawaii to visit family, I had
an opportunity join DMG Hawaii. After minus 70F temperatures, the plus side
of the 70’s is much more desirable. Needless to say, I love Hawaii!
