Honolulu•Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii•It is the largest city in Hawaii•Honolulu's name derives from the native words hono, meaning “a bay,” and lulu, meaning “sheltered.”•The Honolulu area was bombed by Japan in a surprise attack on the unprepared U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, which forced the U.S. to enter WWII.•The population of Honolulu is currently at 963,607.

Route numbers are organized so that the initial digit corresponds to the island:• Numbers beginning with 1 or 2: Hawaii• Numbers beginning with 3: Maui• Numbers beginning with 4: Molokai, Lanai• Numbers beginning with 5: Kauai• Numbers beginning with 6 to 9: Oahu

The designations of Interstate highways in Hawai‘i are abbreviated using the "H" prefix instead of the "I" prefix (e.g. Interstate H-1 is called simply "H-1" for short, NOT "I-H-1")
