Approximately 250 teachers from across the

state have participated in GIS workshops

– What is GIS/GPS

– Meet GIS Professionals in their communities

– Identify GIS Career Pathways

– Receive a Stipend & Jump Drive with

Hawaii Data and Lessons, GIS Curriculum, &Resources

for Ongoing Support.

Fifteen (15) schools; more than 4,400 students

Project-based & service-learning oriented course

Affirms community values and stewardship

Provides students with high-end software

The learning environment creates critical thinkers

Led by an advisor who guides the students in their own self-directed

learning process

Each student team collaborates with at least one technical

advisor/mentor from the community

Key Elements of STEMworks

Technological Skills Students Master:

•Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

•Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

•Computer Generated Animation

•Game Design

•Webpage Design

• Programming

• Digital Media

• Solidworks

• Computer Aided Design

• 3D Visualization

• Project-based, lab-based,

• 1000 students annually

• 15 schools statewide

GIS Project Examples:

•Coqui Frog Project: Map current population sites, determine rainfall &

elevation for current sites, use rainfall & elevation raster layers to analyze areas

that may host unknown populations, or that may be in danger of hosting future

populations

•Natural Disaster Preparedness: Utilizing GIS to analyze patterns of severe

weather conditions.

•Maui Police Department 911 Center: Location of difibulators, emergency

shelter, and frequently used hiking trails.

•National Marine Sanctuary: create a GIS map of the Ko’ie’ie Fishpond. EAST

students are collecting data to help in the restoration of the wall that dates back

to 1400 – 1500 AD.

•Island Beaches: Identify beaches with local and official name, information

regarding amenities, hazards for each beach on map, and provide a picture for

each beach on map.

•Recycling Centers: show current recycling center locations, using a site

suitability model, determine possible sites for future recycling centers.
