Has it ever occurred to you

that the best insurance is a fire

and burglar-proo- f Safe ? Per-

haps it has and you thought, from what your friends havetold you of"the price they paidlong ago that you could notafford to buy one. ,

Good Safes at prices lessthan reasonable are an inno-

vation here and we believe we

are responsible for it. Take apeep at those just inside theentrance to our store.

We mentioned, incidentally, last week something aboutHaviland ware; we're throughstock taking now and haveopened a number of casks ofjust such China as you want tomake your table a poem andyour China pantry a picture.Haviland ware not only im:

proves the appearance of thetable but adds, as well, to thetaste of the good things setbefore your guests.

One great advantage inHaviland is the fact of .yourbeing able to buy a singlepiece at the same rate youwould a hundred and you donthave to buy a full set at onetime. You can buy a y2 doz.plates and have a nucleus of adinner or tea set and add to itas you wish. Ifyou have whatis called a " regular set " ofdecorated China and your ser-

vant breaks even a singlepiece your set is ruined be-

cause it is impossible to matchdishes in such sets. WithHayiland's it is different, wemake a specialty of and recommend a very pretty. patternknown as "2106." Selectedbecause of its delicate beauty, and because it is the prettiestof a hundred or more differentpatterns made by Haviland.1 ne nowers are so natural inappearance that they needonly fragrance to tempt one topick them from the dish. YouuimK we exaggerate out wedon't; come and see for. yourself. In addition to the regu-lation pieces for dinner or teawe have sets for fish, berries, salad, ice cream or roast beef.If you already have a set thatyou do not want to lay asidewe will help you to break themonotony of the meal by sell-

ing you the necessary piecesfor a single course, say a saladset. You'll make a great im-

pression on your guests if youaccept our suggestions, andyou will be pretty well pleasedwith the taste you have shownin the selection.

Are you interested in lamps? We are and for that reason weare careful to get the best. Soshould you. If Diogenes hadprovided himself with one suchas we offer you he would havefound the honest man he waslooking for and would havepicked out something betterthan a tub as a place of resi-dence. The McKinley bill orsome other Bill has made sucha reduction in the prices at themanufactory where we dealthat we can sell you the bestsubstitute for sunlight at alower price than you ever paidbefore. We have a large andhandsome assortment; andevery one prettier than itsneighbor. : ; "

The news from the Volcano bythe Kinau is np to July 2d. Thelake of molten lavs, still remains atabout 250 by 150 feet in diameter, and overflows its banks in all direc-tions at intervals of a few days, thusgradually filling up the deep pitformed by the break-dow- n of Marchlast.

There is yet no appearance of theupward thrust of the whole bottomof the pit, as is so often the case, but

The action in the lake is most intense at the eastern end. at whichpoint the action is mora violent thanit was in Dana Lake before thebreak down. The boiling of thelake is incessant, the lava beingthrown backward and forward inimmense billows and projected intothe air to the height of about thirtyor forty reet, witn trequent carats 01fiery spray to a height of sixty orseventy feet, which falls over anarea of an acre or more. The current of thelake is from west to east, the crustedtop of the lake being divided by theisland as it is borne past and re-melt- ed

As the black crust of the lakeia drawn in under the cone, it fre-quently leaves the surface of thelake around the island a boiling, fiery red, against which the blackoutline of the island stands out boldand defiant; but as the surface ofthe lake occasionally falls severalfeet below its ordinary level it can beseen that the edge of the island isundermined on all sides.

THE NEW HOTEL BUILDINGS

are being pressed forward rapidly.Mr. Howard, who has the contractfor erecting the new hotel, stables, bath house and cottages, is on theground with a Btrong force of work-men, and building is going on as fastas possible. Mrs. Howard accom-panied her husband, and is enjoyingthe cool weather, the sulphur steambaths and the ohelos and cream.

THE TOURIST TRAVEL

is on the increase, in spite of the factthat the accommodation is inade-quate, especially so now that a largenumber of carpenters and laborersare added to the regular quota ofboarders. Prominent Eepublican politician Sndnewspaper man of Cleveland, Ohio, are aiso amoDg ice recent visitors.Col. Hodge has traveled wide andfar, and his opinion of the Volcanowill command attention. He thusrecords it in the Volcano House book:

CAPTAIN HODGE'S OPINION OF THEVOLCANO.

"I have seen many of the naturalwonders of the world ; the Yosemite, theGeysers of the Yellowstone, NiagaraFalls, the great Muir Glacier m Alaska, the Colorado Canon, the great snow cov-ered mountains of Mexico, the Giants'Causeway in Ireland, Mount Blanc on aclear morning forty miles in the distance,Mt. Vesuvius in an eruption at night,BUT NONE OF THESE OFFER ANYTHING SOGRAND, SO AWFULLY SUBLIME, SO MIGHTYin power, as the great burning lake intne crater of Kilauea.

- - O. J. Hodge,Cleveland, O.

Juna 29-3- 0, 1891.

THE CARRIAGE DRIVESwhich the company proposes to con-struct, are already being pushed for-ward. The drive to the UwekahnnaBluff, the highest point on the Kauside of the crater, is completed for adistance of a mile and and a halffrom the house. This will be ex-tended to the edge of the lower bluffimmediately opposite the lake, fromwhich point the lake can ordinarilybe seen. An observation station isto be erected there. As soon as thisdrive is completed, the one to Kila-uea iki will be commenced.

THE TELEPHONE LINE

from Hilo, to connect with the Kausystem at the Volcano, is being rap-idly erected by Mr. Richards. Thepoles are all erected and wire beingplaced in position from Hilo to theHalf-wa-y house; and from there onthe action of the Government is be-ing awaited concerning the VolcanoRoad. If the new road is to be con

structed, the wire will follow that

line; if not then it will follow thepresent trail.WHAT IS TO .BE DONE ABOUT THE VOL-

CANO ROAD?

Is the question which all Hilo is nowasking, and in which every one con-

nected in any way with tourist travelis interested. With increased steamcommunication with the coast, goodhotel accommodations at Hilo Pana-lu- u

and the Volcano, the cue barrierto a large increase in tourist travelto the Volcano is the lack of the car-

riage road from Hilo.

SIR JOHN MACDONALD.

The late Sir John MacDonald, whose death was announced by a

arecent mail, was for many yearsbefore his death admitted by allparties to be the foremost Englishstatesman outside of England. Inmany points resembling Sir HenryParkes, the Premier of New SouthWales, there was this difference between the two men at the start, that young MacDonald being takento Canada by his parents at fiveyears of age was well educated atKingston, Ontario, while the Australian statesman was the son of aWarwickshire farm laborer andemigrated to Sydney at the age of24, with probably the amount andaualitv of education that the sonsA ar

of English field laborers were like--

ly to get seventy years ago.Sir John Macdonald was born in

1815 (the same year as Parkes), andas we have seen landed in Canadain 1820. He was called to the barof Upper Canada at the age of 21

and ten vears later became aw

Queen's Counsel, having alreadysat nearly two years in the Parlia-ment of Canada as member forKingston.

Elected in 1844 he has sat inParliament continuously for aperiod of over forty-si- x years. With the single exception of Mr.Gladstone, who entered Parliamentthree years earlier than Mac-Donal- d,

no man of English race hasbeen so long in public life and sothoroughly identified with publicinterests as the Canadian Premier.

Sir John made his mark at onceand entered the Cabinet in 1847,only three years after his first elec-

tion. From the beginning to the end

of his career he was a staunch Con-

servative. He led the movementfor the confederation of the variousprovinces and was Chairman ofthe London. Colonial Confer-ence in 1867, when the Im-

perial Parliament, led by thelate Lord Carnarvon, passedthe "Act of Union.,f For theseservices he was created K. C. E.,and was chosen as the first PrimeMinister of the dominion, a postwhich he held till 1873, when heresigned and led the Conservativeopposition for five years, havingremoved for a time to Victoria,B.. C, whence he was immediatelyreturned to Parliament.

In 1878 he was again calledupon to form a Ministry whichcontinued in office till the presentdate, though considering that theConservative majority at the lastgeneral election was not so largeas he hoped it is more than likelythat the loss of his guidance, hisgreat influence and experience mayoccasion pnother change.

Sir John was concerned in allthe chief public measures of Canadafor over forty years, includingConfederation, the Canadian Pa-cific Kail way and the settlement ofthe State Church question by thesecularization.

He was nominated Privy Coun-

cillor in 1879 of the "clergy re-

serves." In 1884 he again visitedLondon to assist at the formationof the Imperial Federation League, and was then raised to G. C. B.

A writer in the saysof Sir John: "Ho secured directsteam communication with Europe, the enlargement of canals, the ex-

tension of the dominion, the build-

ing of the great railroads were allfostered, and in some cases directlyinspired by him. He was a con-

structive statesman, of a conserva-

tive temperament. In figure and feature he was not

unlike Disraeli whom he some-

what resembled intellectually. Hewas one of the foremost represen-tive-s

of the imperial idea. Thesplendor of a world-wid- e empirewith the United Kingdom as itscentre was his guiding idea. TheScots of Canada certainly the mostnumerous and probably the most

At the beginning of lastWinter I was on a trip to the CityofVicksburg, Miss. ,where I got welldrenched in a shower of rain. Iwent home and was soon after seizedwith a dry, hacking cough. Thisgrew worse every day, until I hadto seek relief. I consulted Dr. Dixonwho has since died, and he told meto get a bottle of Boschees GermanSyrup. Meantime my cough grewworse and worse and then the Grippecame along and I caught that alsovery severely. My condition thencompelled me to do something. Igot two bottles of German Syrup. Ibegan using them, and before takingmuch of the second bottle, I wasentirely clear of the Cough that hadhung to me so long, the Grippe, andall its bad effects. I felt tin-to-o and
