Southwest students took part and now are in the running for a 500 dollar grand prize for their participation. “The participation for Red Ribbon Week was outstanding,” said David Herrick. He is Southwest’s health teacher and headed the effort. At the Red Ribbon Parade Saturday, Herrick said close to 100 students and staff joined in. “The students and staff that participated showed a lot of enthusiasm and excitement during the Core student of the Week: Hannah Sobczak By Dillon Brazzi, T.J. “The participation for Red Ribbon Week was outstanding,” said David Herrick. He is Southwest’s health teacher and headed the effort.

Southwest Middle School won the Judges Choice Award, one of the awards given at the parade.

Tryouts are around the corner for newcomers to the Rapid City jump rope team. Possibly you have seen their halftime show, or perform at pep assemblies.

Rapid Ropers Coach John Aldridge said they are looking for new recruits to show off their skills. “It only takes willingness to come and learn tricks in order to be a good roper,” said Aldridge.

Some people like me are too tall for many of the desks at school. I am talking about nearly all of the rooms I have classes in.

One suggestion, the janitors could raise the desks. Unfortunately, many of the desks will not go any higher.

On the Border is a delicious place to eat. They serve great Mexican food.

The downside is the restaurant is very busy on Friday, and Saturday nights.

Review: Stevens SoccerBy T.J. Nolan

The Stevens Raiders girls’ soccer team finished the regular season with a solid record. They had 11 wins, 0 losses, and one tie.

In the championship game, on a nice, warm, sunny day, in front of a large crowd, the Raiders were matched up against Pierre. The Raiders came out hard and fast like they had in previous games. The Raiders kept Pierre's shots to a minimum and dominated the game.

There is much in store for P.E. classes at Southwest this year, after a semi-truck

brought a lot of new equipment. “We just got three treadmills, three elliptical

machines, and all types of new equipment,” said Jo Pagal, a Physical Education teacher at Southwest.

P.E. teachers also have added new games and units. “Each year our goal is to add in one new unit,” said Pagel.

This year they are adding a new game called Speedminton, that is like Badminton with modifications.

Pagel said she is excited to have a new member on her team, John Aldridge. “Mr. Aldridge is really creative,” Pagel said. Speaking of Aldridge, Pagel said he is helping organize

Varsity Athlete: Lindsey Tibbles By Madi Pryor, Rhea Colombe, and Alicia Scherr

In the eighth grade wing, most mornings you can find Lindsey Tibbles. She is known for her domination on the tennis court. Tibbles hopes her hard work pays off with a career in tennis someday.

Most tennis players find their serve a struggle, but Tibbles finds it her strength. Although she has a weak side. Tibbles said her weakness is “aiming.”

Tibbles competes regionally, including in Minnesota and North Dakota.

Although Tibbles’ tennis matches are a big enough work out, she still has to do warm-ups. Some of her warm-ups include stretching, and hitting tennis balls.
