This season’s program is brimming with an exciting mix of arts experiences for music, dance and theatre lovers along with a fun-filled kids’ program and hands-on workshops for adults.

Hawthorn Arts Centre is proud to again host the 3MBS Marathon event, with this year’s composer unveiled as Mendelssohn. Over six sessions, some of Melbourne’s finest classical musicians and singers will converge on Hawthorn to present a one-of-a-kind event. Also within the music program is the annual Boroondara Eisteddfod Piano Concerto Award featuring three fine young pianists performing with accompaniment from Zelman Symphony.

On the dance scene, in February, Asanti Dance Theatre will provide an unforgettable experience of African music, dance and culture with a contemporary edge. Followed by the return of the Melbourne Ballet Company in March, this is an eclectic dance program not to be missed.

Two of the best theatre productions in Australia will grace the Hawthorn Arts Centre stage this season. Starting with 4000 Miles in March, this play’s accolades are impressive including Finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play and named Time Magazine's #1 Play or Musical of 2012.

Rounding out the theatre program is Boy Out of the Country. Funny, fast paced, and written in an Australian poetic vernacular reminiscent of the poetic tradition of Banjo Paterson, this is a play about land, family and belonging.

2016 also sees the launch of Hawthorn Arts Centre’s program just for kids as well as the Boroondara Arts Kids’ Club. With a mix of fun school holiday activities and quality shows on the stage, there is something for all ages and interests.

And if you are a big kid looking to try your hand at something new, the adult workshop series “I CAN DO THAT?” is for you. The Home Styling series in Term One will feature an exclusive seminar by Selling Houses Australia and The Block’s Shaynna Blaze. Term Two’s Winter Warmers series gives you the chance to prepare for the winter months with classes on knitting and quilting with a modern twist.

Alongside the exquisite programs in our sister venues, Kew Court House and Town Hall Gallery, the arts offering in Boroondara has never been better.

Welcome to Hawthorn Arts Centre’s 2016 Season 1 program. This is the Centre’s fifth season since opening in late 2013 and features a selection of dance, theatre and music from artists and companies at the top of their game.

Following the immensely popular Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms marathons, 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne, in partnership with the Hawthorn Arts Centre, is proud to present the 12-hour 3MBS Mendelssohn Marathon.

Across six sessions, Artistic Curator Chris Howlett has gathered 70 of Australia’s finest chamber and vocal musicians to perform 25 of Felix Mendelssohn's greatest masterpieces as well as works from his talented sister Fanny.

Featuring a stellar line-up of some of Australia's most beloved classical musicans and ensembles, the 3MBS Mendellsohn Marathon will be a highlight of the 2016 Melbourne musical calendar and a unique opportunity to engage deeply with a musical genius.

21-year-old Leo rocks up unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-year-old Jewish grandmother Vera. Having broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions asked. But Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily.

As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising parallel between these two generations in this emotionally compelling drama. With disarming frankness and surprising candour, the two negotiate social potholes and trace emotional fault lines that link them to a painful family history.

From one of America’s brightest playwrights, this compassionate and unsentimental play explores the funny, frustrating, and ultimately life-changing relationship between a grandson learning to face his life, and a grandmother who is starting to forget hers.

Funny, fast paced, and written in an Australian poetic vernacular reminiscent of the poetic tradition of Banjo Paterson, Boy Out of the Country tells a story of land, family and belonging. A family property, worthless for generations, is suddenly zoned as part of a regional housing estate to accommodate an ever increasing urban sprawl. At this moment of shifting economies and loyalties, Hunter returns from a seven year absence. Finding his boyhood house boarded up and his mother in a retirement home, Hunter goes in search of answers. And he starts with his brother Gordon.

Award winning poet and playwright Felix Nobis has created a play in Australian verse. The language tunes into the rhythms of the country and uses those rhythms to examine relationships and uncover the landscape. It is a play where an old Australia meets a new Australia: where a country cop comes to terms with catchment areas, where a fifth bedroom is more important than a backyard, and where new technologies have the potential of uncovering old family secrets.

VeIL oF Maya

This program will feature three world premieres from Australian choreographers Lucas Jervis, Rani Luther and Alexander Baden Bryce and is the first of a trilogy of performances by Melbourne Ballet entitled Intention and Desire showing throughout 2016.

The first part of this new trilogy explores the concept of illusion vs reality in Veil of Maya. The Veil has been described as a frightening illusion which can obscure human perception of reality—what exists and what does not.

For many who believe that in human love we find completeness—such a delusion is regrettable—blinding men into falling in love. The opening ‘volume’ of Intention and Desire thus presents a reflection of a distorted world, clouded by disturbing shadows.

Information on the next two instalments in the trilogy, Empyrean and Guerica will be available in the first half of 2016.

Take a trip down memory lane to a time before television and the entertainment highlight of the week was the Sunday night radio play.

Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera is the intriguing romance that has fascinated readers for over a hundred years.

Young singer Christine Daaè gains praise, accolades and success at the Paris Opera. What nobody knows is that she has been receiving secret lessons from an unknown tutor; what even she doesn’t know is that he is in fact the man who calls himself the Opera Ghost. All becomes undone when Christine reconnects with her childhood friend Raoul, and the encounter sends the Ghost into a jealous rage.

The Lux Radio Theatre recreates The Phantom of the Opera as it was meant for radio with distinguished actors playing multiple roles, creating live sound effects and presenting the vintage soap commercials. This show promises to give you an experience like you have never had before!

Legendary children’s performer, and three time ARIA Award Winner, Peter Combe comes to Hawthorn Arts Centre with a new show, Mr. Clicketty Cane Plays Chopsticks. In this one-show-only performance Peter is joined by the Melbourne Cheer Academy, adding lively dance moves and acrobatics to some new songs and some of the old favourites including Wash Your Face in Orange Juice, Newspaper Mama and his latest ‘hit’ Quirky Beserky the Turkey from Turkey! Pete’s shows are always fun for everyone, so treat yourself and the kids to an hour of laughter and scrumptious music.

'It may be that this review is infected with the bias of extreme nostalgia from an original Combe fan, but honestly, there is no one on this continent who hasn’t a special place in their heart for this composer of anthems for the Australian youth. The Fringe World Spiegeltent rejoiced in his silliness. Bless him. Bless him and his quirky berserkey turkey from Turkey'. Kate Predergast Perth Fringe Feb 2015
