Welcome to the Hawthorn Arts Centre’s 2015 Season 2 program. This is the Centre’s fourth season since opening in late 2013 and features a selection of dance, theatre and music from artists and companies at the top of their game.

Showcasing contemporary ballet from Melbourne Ballet Company as well as an exquisite Spanish-inspired dance performance from Queensland’s Expressions Dance Company, dance lovers of all persuasions will be thrilled with what is on offer.

The program also delivers something for the theatre-goers amongst us. Whether it is the story of literary giant Dylan Thomas, under the original direction of Sir Anthony Hopkins, or the laugh-out-loud comedy about life, love and… the AFL with Reserved Seating Only, this season’s theatre program is sure to delight.

Rounding out the program is something for the music lovers with our popular daytime program, Matinee Music. Featuring a line up of well-known names with the likes of Grace Knight, and tributes to some of the greatest eras in music’s history with a special nod to The Beatles. We also welcome Wendy Stapleton who brings her hit show, The Dusty Springfield Story.

In Greek mythology, ‘archè’ indicates the beginning; the principle from which the elements rise and the force that explains their birth and death. Spiritually, the figure of the swan is seen as a messenger of the gods and is associated with divinity itself.

This production sees the company’s Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, Simon Hoy, evoke the powerful symbolism and ethereal image of the swan within Greek mythology and Irish folklore.

Drawing inspiration from classics such as W.B. Yeats’ ‘Leda and the Swan’ and Swan Lake’s ‘Odette’ and ‘The Dying Swan,’ Hoy has composed a marvellously powerful and uplifting program of contemporary ballet that is stimulated by the fundamental concept of evolution and rebirth.

Set to music by Joan Jeanrenaud, Ennio Morricone and Ludovico Einaudi, the Melbourne Ballet Company’s latest production embodies much of the emotion, line and silhouette of the swan, with the choreography giving form and emphasis to the grace contained within each gesture.

Dylan Thomas was born in Wales in 1914 and died in New York in 1953 at the age of 39. Towards the end of his life he toured America performing his works before sell out audiences across the country.

Our great game viewed by an unlikely pair in the reserved section of a major football stadium.This action packed play features real-life husband and wife team David Ross Paterson (Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, Chopper) as a loud, burly football fan, and Cecelia Specht (Criminal Minds, Castle, Neighbours) as a recently divorced football widow, who has claimed her ex-husband’s tickets as part of a messy divorce settlement.

As a footy ‘conscientious objector’ she is blissfully immune to the attraction of the game and instantly locks horns with her ex-husband’s footy-mate who becomes her reluctant companion over four eventful quarters. They make a seriously mismatched couple with little to offer each other.

Performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s gripping Carmen Suite by six EDC dancers, this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don Josè has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen.

Josè’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge.

Natalie Weir’s Carmen is a free spirit; dangerous, volatile and vulnerable, brought to vivid life by three dancers playing her different states of mind and alter egos.

Grace Knight is that rare artist who not only crosses generations, she crosses genres.

Arriving in Perth from the UK in 1977, Grace found her way into the local band scene working her way through various combinations until snaring the lead vocal role in the pop/rock hit heavy band, Eurogliders, who went on to enjoy a string of major hit singles, platinum albums and international tours.

After the break up of the band, fate stepped in and Grace was cast as the jazz chanteuse in the smash ABC TV hit Come In Spinner, which resulted in a multi- platinum soundtrack album and featured Australian jazz master, Vince Jones.

The remarkable success caught everyone by surprise while providing the foundation and tone for Grace’s critically acclaimed jazz recording success with Gracious, Stormy Weather and Willow. Her work has fuelled the enduring demand for her concert performances in clubs and festivals across the nation.
