Ely Sinfonia presents a concert of popular classics by Mahler, Haydn and Berlioz.

Mahler’s highly ambitious and totally spell-binding Symphony no 1 owes much of its excitement and drama to Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, on which it was modelled.

Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture would not have been written but for the failure of his opera, Benvenuto Cellini, now considered a masterpiece. Yet it is now one of his most popular works.

Haydn’s witty and lyrical Cello Concerto No 2 demands virtuoso playing from the soloist, a role taken tonight by one of the UK’s rising stars, Cambridge-based cellist, Joshua Lynch. Already a prolific soloist, chamber musician and teacher, at just 30 Josh has already performed in such prestigious venues as The Wigmore Hall, The Crucible and the Leeds International Concert Series. He won the International Academy’s Maurice Ravel award (Musiciens entre guerre et paix).
