6th October 2017 Sports News: Year 5 Football Tournament
Our Year 5 footballers played 4 excellent games at the inter schools
tournament this week and came a very well-earned 2nd place. They
all played very skillfully and supported each other well with Zac
showing his leadership skills in captaining and organising the team.
Well Done to you all!
Netball
Mrs Jolly is running netball practices from 3.30-4.30 on Tuesdays
for the next 2 weeks. This is for any Year 5/6 children and in
particular, for those who are interested in taking part in the Hi 5
Netball tournament on Thursday 19th October.
‘That Poetry Bloke’ www.thatpoetrybloke.com
On Thursday afternoon, poet and performer, Craig Bradley, entertained us with
humour and rhymes. As well as having lots of fun and laughter, he had some
key messages about poetry-including how important reading is, the effect that
the sound of words has and how anyone can try writing poetry by just taking
words and ideas and putting them together.
Macmillan
Last Friday we held a special Coffee and Cake Afternoon in aid of Macmillan
Cancer Support. With the help of group of children from Class 3 we raised a fabulous £267. Nelly, Peter,
Imogen, Dan B and Dan S worked politely, efficiently and with great confidence serving drinks and selling
raffle tickets. Thank you very much for your support.
Parents Association
We are holding a meeting for any parents who are interested in re-establishing our
Parents and Friends Association on Monday 16th October at 6.30pm in school with
wine and nibbles. We will be discussing any ideas for social and fundraising events
and thinking about this year’s Christmas activities.
We all have busy lives but the more people who can get involved the easier the
workload for everyone and the more varied activities we can offer.
Science day
Change of date: On Thursday 12th October, Year 3 and 4 are having a science day
full of exploration and investigation linked to their focus on magnetism. To help
them get in role, the children can bring along anything to wear to make them feel
more like scientists such as a lab coat (large white shirt), glasses (old 3d cinema
glasses/ goggles), mad science hair, magnifying glass (real or card cut out), rubber
gloves etc . There is no need to buy any costumes or accessories for this fun day!
Headlice
Please take the opportunity this weekend to check your child’s hair as we have had a case in school

Class News
Foundation Stage
We learnt lots of new things this week when Father Christopher
showed us around our church. The children all got comfy on the pews
and listened carefully to what was inside. Dexter noticed a long rope
dangling through a hole in the ceiling. He told us "That rope goes to the
bell tower. It makes a sound so the people know to come to church."
We are looking forward to our next visit from Father
Christopher, where he will show us all his special clothes that he wears
for different occasions in church. Miss Painter, Mrs Lovell, Mrs Stearne, Mrs Thompson
Class 1
This week in Class 1 we have been enjoying our RE learning about
places of worship. Last week we learnt all about the Muslim place of
worship and this week we have explored the Mandir, which is a
Hindu temple. We learnt what we could see in a temple, how Hindu’s
prepared themselves for prayer and why the temple is important to
them. We also discussed the many Hindu Gods and created some
beautiful pictures of them. Miss Schofield, Mrs Ross
Class 2
This week in Year 3 and 4, we have
been looking at places of worship.
We have been studying all about
the different rites and rituals that
go on inside Gurdwaras (the Sikh
place of worship), Mosques (the
Muslim place of worship) and the
Synagogue (the Jewish place of
worship). To help us understand
this even better, we decided it
would be a fantastic opportunity
for us to visit one of these places and see first hand how places of worship differ. This led us to the United
Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Leeds. After having a tour and identifying key areas of a synagogue,
the children got to handle real artefacts and to see a Torah Scroll (the Jewish religious text) up close! Teddy
loved it so much he said, 'This is fantastic, can we make a book about it when we get back?!' See all our
photos at http://bit.ly/Synagogue2017 Mr McHale, Miss Riley, Mrs Brammer
Class 3
Within our literacy lessons this week, we have been using drama
conventions to help ‘step into the shoes’ of characters aboard the
Titanic and be able to empathise with them. The children worked
in small groups to come up with three freeze frame images which
showed a transition from one event to the next during that tragic
night. Each child came up with their own character and
background story including which class they were travelling in,
where they were and what they were doing the night the vessel
struck the iceberg. We then went on to write character profiles
during Big Writing. Mrs Findlay, Mrs Callaghan
