HCC Basic Eagle Online Faculty Training Guide Using EGLS3 in Eagle Online Canvas

EGLS3, or the Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System, is a cooperative project from the Office of Institutional Research, the Office of Instruction, the Faculty Senate, our online vendor Smarter Surveys, and the University of North Texas. Researchers at UNT designed the focus of EGLS3 to be on improving learning and instruction by providing feedback on dimensions that relate to effective teaching. This project allows for online evaluation of instruction by students. Students access this instrument by logging into the student system. One of first things you need to do when starting to build your online course is to create a module towards the end of your course that where students will have a link to take this important survey. To add an EGLS3 module to your course:

1. After logging into course, click on the Modules button on the left-hand side of the screen.

2

2. First, you will want to add a new module for the EGLS3 Survey Information. It is best to put it towards the end of the course, but not at the very end. If you put it at the very end, students will not be as encouraged to log back in and complete the survey after they have finished all of the assignments and the final. Click on the ‘plus module’ button in the top right-hand side of the page. The add module box will appear. Enter the name of the module similar to ‘EGLS3 Course Evaluation’. You can choose what to name this module, but make sure it is apparent to students what information is located within this module. You will then click, ‘add module’.

3. The module has been added at the bottom of the modules list, but is not published indicated by the gray coloring. You will publish the module after content is added. You can move the module to the desired location within the course by clicking to the left of the module title, ‘EGLS3 Course Evaluation’ and dragging up to the new location.

To add a page within the EGLS3 module to your course:

1. Click on the ‘plus’ symbol within the new EGLS3 module.

2. Once you have clicked on the ‘plus’ symbol, an ‘add item’ box will appear. You will want to

select add “content page” in the drop-down menu and select ‘new page’.

3. In the ‘page name’ box near the bottom of this screen, you will want to name the page similar to

‘EGLS3 Course Evaluation’. You can choose what to name this page, but make sure it is apparent to students what information is located within this page. You will then click ‘add item’.

4

4. The content page has been added to the module, but is not published indicated by the gray coloring. You will publish the page after content is added. You will click on the new page to begin editing the content.

5. Within the content page, you will click the ‘edit’ button on the top right-hand side of the screen. Here you will enter the content for this page along with the link for the students to access the EGLS3 Survey System.

6. In the textbox, type or insert the following information:

Course Evaluation Evaluate your instructor: EGLS3 Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System

Dear Students,

We need your input to evaluate your instructor this semester. The EGLS3 (Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System) is available for most courses near the end of the term before finals start. (Not all courses are available for this survey.) This brief survey will give invaluable information to your faculty about their teaching. Results are anonymous and will be available to faculty and division chairs a month after the end of the term. Take the EGLS3 survey by going to the Student System or click the link below.

7. Click on ‘Save’ to view the page created within the module. Your EGLS3 survey for your students online is now all set up. To make this page viewable to the students, click the ‘publish’ button. It will turn green to indicate it is published for students to see.

8. You will need to publish the module to make the entire module viewable to the students. Click on the modules button on the left-hand side of the screen. Then you will click the publish button next to the module title ‘EGLS3 Course Evaluation’. The checkmark will turn green to indicate the entire module is published.

Remember to remind the students to take this very important survey. And, you as a faculty member can access participation rates during the survey process as well as results after the end of the term when grades are turned in. A more thorough explanation of the project, including current standards, how to interpret results, and other vital information, can be found inside the MyHCC website.
