Today, Wednesday, June 29. An average Wednesday for the rest of the world, but for this group of absolutely gorgeous graduates, it is a day they will remember and celebrate for the rest of their lives.

Welcome family, friends, teachers, staff and special guests to our gradu-ation day and thank-you for sharing this special day with us. You are all here because each of you have played an im-portant role in our lives. You have been there to comfort us, to keep us focused, to teach us, and most importantly, to love us, even if we made that list ex-tremely diffi cult for you. We would not be here without you. I am honoured to be delivering the valedictorian’s ad-dress today, as each and every student on this stage is qualifi ed to be standing right here in my shoes.

We receive two things upon gradu-ation, the fi rst being our transcripts. It may seem that our transcripts only contain a detailed list of marks and grades, but what they also contain are years of memories, moments and les-sons. Our transcripts are a giant list of “remember whens.”

Remember when Austin laughed so hard in the lunch room he fell off his desk? Remember when Mr. Zed soaked Dean and Jason with his ceiling tile contraption?

However, not all of our memories in high school have been happy ones. These are the moments in which we learned lessons and the times in which we transformed from classmates to friends and into a family.

As we transition into the next stage in our lives, we must remember our past, our transcripts and the lessons they contain. Our teachers have given us a lesson in selfl essness, our parents

have taught us to love and encourage one another and our classmates have shown us that we should expect the unexpected.

We may learn about science, math and history from our teachers, but the true lessons they have left us with are numerous and price-less. They have shown us how to be selfl ess, not with questions or readings from the curriculum, but through their own actions. Daily, teachers and support staff come to school early a n d s t a y l a t e . T h e y spend week-ends perfect-ing the latest choir song, with sports teams and extracurricular groups. I can, with near certainty, say out teachers so not put in these extra hours for them-selves — everything they do is to make us the best possible people we can be.

Our parents taught us to say “please” and “thank-you,” to cook, clean and even do the laundry, but one of the most important lessons they leave on our transcripts cannot be seen or heard, only felt and experienced. For the last 18 years, our parents have been our biggest cheerleaders. They have stood behind us in every one of our endea-vours. They loved us no matter how upset we made them or how much we stressed them out. Their love and

encouragement got us a long way. It got us to graduation. Now it’s our turn to love and encourage one another as we begin to leave home and venture out on our own.

Between extracurricular groups and sports teams, it almost seems that

during the school year, we spend more time with our

classmates than we do with our own fami-

lies. I have learned a special lesson

from each one of you, but as a whole you have taught me to expect t h e u n e x -pected. I see now, in all of you, qualities I would have never foreseen

upon fi rst meet-ing you. It may

be cliché saying, “don’t judge a book

by its cover,” but my classmates have taught

me that it is very true and very important. Taking the time to get to know a person will allow you to have more meaningful relationships and open the door for many oppor-tunities.

The second item we receive upon graduation is a diploma. If you were to open up the diploma you have in your hands, you would see that it’s just a blank piece of paper. This blank piece of paper represents to us a world of endless opportunity. Nothing has been decided for us. There have been no constraints placed on us that would

limit what we can and cannot do with our future. In the years following today, we will fi ll up this blank page with new lessons, new opportunities, careers and relationships. If we remember the lessons our transcripts contain — be selfl ess, love and encourage others and don’t judge a book by its cover — we can each create a diploma that has the potential to change the world.

I would like to leave you with a les-son that I have learned in the past year. Look at your classmates. We are all go-ing our separate ways after tonight, but always remember the times we have shared and always stay in contact. Look out into the audience and see your fami-lies. They have loved and supported us through every triumph and trial we have experienced in the past 18 years. Always be grateful for them and call home often. Look to the very back of the theatre and see your teachers. They have invested their time and talents into our lives. Sincerely thank them, visit them and update them. When you walk out the doors today, you’ll see the community that has supported every event, fundraiser and sport we have participated in. Wemay move away, start a family and life in another place, but Humboldt is always our home. Beyond Humboldt lies the world. A world that is ours to make a mark on, so remember your transcripts and fi ll up that diploma.

On behalf of all the graduates of 2011, I sincerely thank our teachers, support staff, our parents and families, all who are here and all who could not be, every person who has joined us on this won-derful journey to graduation. Thanks to the graduates for the wonderful memo-ries, moments and lessons. I will truly miss each and every one of you.

Hello one and all, friends and fam-ily, teachers and students. My name is Matthew Doepker and it is my great honour to welcome you all to this special moment in our lives. All of you out there have helped us in some way and it is my job to thank you for all you have done.

Teachers, whether it is words of wisdom like, “Legs feed the wolf,” or “take care out there,” you were always looking into our best interests. Now there are a few times that I am sure some of you teachers have lost your patience with us and have, on more than one occasion, told us to, “Hey, hey, hey, focus.” But no matter how much we got on your nerves, you were always willing to give up your own time to ensure that we were the best we could be. I want all of you to go out and thank all your favourite teachers that helped you on your journey and

thank your “not so favourite” teach-ers as well. You don’t have to really mean it, but it will make them feel good.

Parents, you have always helped us the best you can, from picking us up when we needed it, to helping us with home-work, even if you could only help with Grade 9 home-work. We may have had some ar-guments along the way, but you never once treated us unfairly... well not too un-

fairly, at least. It might not seem like it, but we know the only rea-

son we have arguments is because you love

us. I encourage all of my peers

in the class to go up to your parents and, if you haven’t yet and even if you have, thank them; tell them you love them. Gross, right?

Guys, anyone who will clean

your dirty diapers obviously loves you

a lot. And now for my fellow

graduates. When I was writing this

speech, I felt compelled to read pre-vious speeches made by other years. They all have one thing in common — they said, “We fi nally made it.” Now I would say that line is kind of cheesy and I am not one to repeat such a statement, so instead I thought to use a thesaurus. At long last we fi nished high school — see, different. We all will be moving on with our lives and ultimately we are bound to lose contact with each other at some point. Well, that is what I would be saying if there was no such thing as social networking — thank you, future. I ask that my fellow graduates do not use the method of “scorched earth” with their friends as they leave high school. I know that all of you guys out there will be a “great success.”

This is sure to be one of the greatest moments in our lives and I am glad to welcome you all here.
