The production parameters are re-sponsible for the excellent properties ofhydrophilic, pure and odorless HDK .

Pyrogenic silica is formed by hydrolysisat over 1,000 C. This is achieved byintroducing chlorosilanes into an oxyhy-drogen ame, producing SiO 2 primaryparticles about 550 nanometers (10 9 m)in size. In the ame, the primary particlesfuse together permanently to form largeunits, o r aggregates (1001,000 nm insize). That is to say, individual primaryparticles only exist in the reaction zoneitself.

On cooling, the aggregates mechanicallyentangle to form agglomerates, knownas tertiary structures. The aggregateshave sizes in the range of microns. HDK has a very high speci c surface area(BET) because of the small diameters ofits primary building blocks. The primaryparticles that are fused together in theaggregates nally arrange themselvesinto agglomerates. This inherently largesurface area-to-mass ratio causesintense interparticulate interactions, which are the result of attractive disper-sion and dipolar forces. And that isprecisely the reason for the outstandingproperties of HDK .

    PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES ANDCHARACTERISTICS

HDK pyrogenic silica has a wide

vari ty of us s in cosm tics andp rsonal car products. Fromlipstick to shampoo, HDK pyro-g nic silica can gr atly h lpimprov th v rsatility and p r- formanc of your products.

    e cts

HDK has wide uses in cosmeticsand personal care products for itsvariety of specific properties.

Rh ology controlHDK increases viscosity and impartsthixotropy. As a gelling agent, HDK modi es the viscosity of oils, waxesand emulsions.

S dim ntation and s parationHDK delays or prevents settlingof pigments and powders(in suspensions).

In creams, lotions, lipstick andfoundation products, HDK improvesstability and structure.

HDK stabilizes formulations byreducing sensitivity to temperature, electrolytes and pH.

Fr - ow and anticaking additivHDK improves the free-flow of powders.

    Applicat ions

Color Cosm ticsIn foundations, eyeliners und mascara,HDK regulates consistency, controls viscosity and prevents theagglomeration of color pigments.

PowdersHDK enhances the free flow of powders.

Nail lacquersHDK assures uniform distributionof pigments, reduces sedimentationand allows rheology control.

LipsticksHDK acts as a thickener andimproves the consistency of lipsticks.

HDK facilitates the uniform distribu-tion of pigments and enhances thermalstability.

Ant ip rspir antsHDK stabilizes suspensions, preventsthe agglomeration of active ingredientsand ensures their uniform distribution;it increases the viscosity of creams andsticks; either hydrophilic or hydrophobicHDK can be used.

    PACKAGING

Pall ts with Pap r Bags HDK is available in multilayer valvedpaper bags which contain 10 kg ofproduct. The bags are delivered onpallets which are shrink-wrapped witha polyethylene foil to protect the HDK against moisture. This allows theproduct to be stored without anymoisture uptake. If the shrink foil isdamaged or single bags are removed, care must be taken to protect theremaining bags/individual bags againstmoisture by either wrapping in plasticor other appropriate measures.

Palletized and shrink-wrapped forgood product protection, storageand handling

Three-ply paper for added strength Bags are disposable

Big bags The big bag solution is available for mostHDK grades, a woven polypropylenebag containing 150200 kg of product, depending on the respective bulk densityof the product. Big bags are deliveredon a pallet shrink-wrapped with a poly-ethylene lm to protect against moisture.
