Our November member-ship meeting was anothergreat success. Thank you tothe 200 plus who attendedand to Dr. Harald Heymannfor an entertaining andinformative presentation. As always, a big thank yougoes to our HinmanTrustees for this continuedsupport of the meetings.

Nancy and I proudly represented Hinman last month in Memphis at the12th Annual Hinman Research Symposium hostedby the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry. This symposium showcases undergraduate dental student research projects. This year 40 different dental schools were represented including three fromCanada. Our annual gift to UT allows them to bringthese top students and their mentors to Memphis topresent their work in a competitive, but casual,a t m o s p h e re. We can all be very proud of our Hinmandollars at work and the fine reputation Hinmanenjoys throughout the country because of the specialcommitment to academics.

As March fast approaches, I know we’re all onboard with Richard for the 2007 meeting. Rememberto attend your committee meetings and if you do nothave an assignment or want to do more, contact theHinman office.

On behalf of all Society officers, another heartfeltthank you to everyone on the Hinman staff. You really are the “glue” that keeps us all together.

I hope everyone had a healthy, happy holidayseason and I’ll look forward to seeing all of you atthe January meeting. This one will be great for staffso be sure to include them. See you soon.

Take care,

Hinman Dental Society November Membership Meeting

New members Wendy Mitchell and HankBradford with their sponsor Celeste Coggin andsponsor Heather Perry with new member AllaBrown. The new members received their plaquesfrom President Ferguson earlier in the evening.

President Ferguson presents Harald Heymannwith his speaker’s plaque.

Brian Carpenter and Zach Powell take HaraldHeymann out on the Sunday before the lecture toenjoy a beautiful Atlanta afternoon.

President Ferguson ( far right) presents 30 yearpins to ( from l to r) Drs. Jim Hulfeld, Raymond

Johnson, George Patterson, Jim Kennedy, DonnieBrown, Tom McDonald and Tom Harvey.

A proud BruceAshendorf accepts the

advisory pin for servingas the 2006 General

Chairman.

Past General Chairman and re t i red Decatur dentist,D r. Cu rtis Reding has probably seen the Thomas P.Hinman Dental Meeting ch a n ge more than anyo t h e r Hinman member. He’s been involved withHinman since 1948 and has held every offi c eimaginable within the Hinman Dental Society andthe meeting.

He served as General Chairman of the meetingin 1965 and says that it’s a completely differentmeeting today. Ba ck then, the meeting feature deight to ten clinicians and had just moved its loca-t i o n to the Atlanta M a rriott Motor Hotel in down-town Atlanta. At severa l thousand attendees, hes ay s it was still one of the large r meetings in thecountry. And, southern hospitality was still a bigp a rt of the meeting then. “We treated visiting clinicians like noother meeting and h o s ted some of the most prominent dentists inthe co u n t ry. ”

Even after Dr. Reding served as General Chairman, he co n t i n u e dto serve as the Technical Exhibits Chairman for many years andalso on the Board of Tr u s tees. He co n t i n u e s to attend Advisory

Board meetings and stays involved with Hinmandespite the fact that he re t i red from his dentalp ra ctice more than 30 years ago. But, Dr. Re d i n gdoesn’t re a lly re p resent the avera ge retiree. He hascircled the globe many times over.

“My wife and I visited every continent exceptAntartica – we just had no desire to see that partof the world.” But, he’s seen every other cornerof the world and even spent Christmas last yearin Hong Kong at 88 years of age. When he’s notg l o b e- t ro t t i n g , he often judges chrysanthemumshows around the country. He began growingchrysanthemums when he first retired andalmost immediately began showing them in vari-ous shows like the Georgia Chry s a n t h e m u m

S o c i e ty’s annual show at the At l a n t a Botanical Garden.Dr. Reding will celebrate his 90th birthday in March and says

he looks back fondly on his years in dentistry and his involve-ment with Hinman. His advice to up-and-coming dentists issimple, “They should know how lucky they are and if they arelike me, helping others will be their gre a test pleasure.” W
