ANISE ALISEATLANTICA
B arbra Streisand is a diva – Julia Gillard is not. How does one identify that special ingredient that separates the women from the girls in the
prima-donna stakes? What’s the difference between Janet Jackson and
Aretha Franklin? Talent, for sure, is an important component, but beyond talent, what is it that makes our eyes water with love, fear and joy at the same time?
I can’t answer the question. Being a diva is having a unique, indescribable magic that has to be experienced and can’t be logically explained.
At the 2011 Melbourne Cabaret Festival, I had the pleasure of seeing several sensational divas … and divos. No shortage of males to “fill the stage before uttering a word and suck the oxygen out of it”.
Over six nights I saw more than a jukebox-full of local and international cabaret stars belt out tunes, stomp their stilettos and bat their false eyelashes so hard that tides were altered in the Baltic Sea.
But if life is a cabaret, sometimes you get the seat behind the pillar. And so it is that the Melbourne Cabaret Festival is fighting for its life and we, the people of Melbourne, the most diva capital of Australia, can’t let this happen.
The festival is now in its third year and is one of Victoria’s fastest-growing festivals, having achieved a 37 per cent increase in sales last year.
That’s how Victoria got back its triple-A credit rating. Nothing to do with fiscal management and everything to do with fishnets and the fandango!
The not-for-profit festival is currently funded entirely through fund-raising campaigns, strategic sponsorships and ticket sales.
In order to proceed this year and to support the expansion of the festival to 10 days, from July 12 to July 21, the festival needs $15,000 before March 15. At the time of writing, only $9351 had been raised. The festival’s major fund-raising campaign is via the crowd-funding website pozible.com and is supported by performers such as the Dresden Dolls, Paul Capsis, Sammy J & Randy and the Jane Austen Argument.
Politicians on both sides have also declared their support for the festival, with lunch at Parliament House being offered by Liberal Heidi Victoria, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts, and high afternoon tea being offered by Martin Foley, the state Labor member for Albert Park.
And oh my god, Geoffrey Rush has donated a personally autographed, limited-edition Pirates of the Caribbean T-shirt, produced only for the cast and crew of the movie!
The campaign has been hailed for placing unique items for sale on pozible.com rather than simply asking for donations. By pledging very small amounts of
money, not only are you contributing directly to keep the festival alive but you get to complete your bucket list by hosting your own radio show, having a cocktail named after you or performing burlesque.
You can even purchase your very own piano man, in your home or for a function, for one hour, by international piano-bar entertainer Trevor Jones or a personalised bedtime story recorded by the voice of the Sydney Olympics and SBS, Robbie McGregor.
Regrettably, there’s no diva workshop where I can be coached to roll my tongue along the roof of my mouth so that it snaps down hard on the letter N when I repeat the word “no”.
In an era of reality shows and mass-produced faux pleasure, you can help to make sure that we continue to enjoy something that is beyond definition, “magical and unmistakable” and sends chills up and down your spine. Be bold and brassy and go to www.cabaret.pozible.com Downstairs at Alma’s in Caulfield is also lending a hand on Wednesday, March 14. For the full line-up and bookings, go to www.downstairsatalmas.com.au/index.php. Tickets are a ridiculously low $22, and there will be a silent auction on the night. \

Y ou would reckon life at the top of the fashion industry, even in Australia, would be glamorous. But there can’t be much shine to the life when you admit that there are times when you have to work from 6am to 2am seven days a week for three weeks running, sometimes longer.
Toni Maticevski dances around the edge of the glamour. He sees his role as creating “the mystique of glamour”.“I do like what glamour can represent and what it entails,” Maticevski says. “Without glamour my industry
would not exist and my aesthetic would be null and void.”
Maybe his parents chose the wrong country in which to settle. If Maticevski had his time over he might have changed his starting point, because a decade-and-a-half ago there were limited opportunities in Australia.
“The industry then was not as established as it is becoming now, or as broad and available. So what I did either went unnoticed or failed to register with a lot of people.
“Even if they liked the work I was doing, there was no understanding that such work could exist in Australia.”
When Maticevski graduated from RMIT in Melbourne he dreamed of being “an overnight success”.
“I think I would have probably liked to have hit the ground running but it has been quite a consistently tedious and arduous advancement and progress,” he says.
Sure, there have been some high points but much, much more hard work.
A lot has been written and prophesised about Maticevski, the designer who went from humble beginnings in Melbourne’s western suburbs to dizzying heights of fashion “stardom” in New York and Paris before ending up back in Melbourne.
He is often referred to as the boy who famously turned down offers from Donna Karan and Cerruti. Old news to him. “It happened a long time ago,” he says.
“Hindsight is a beautiful thing. I don’t know if I would be doing what I am doing now if I stayed overseas. I don’t know if I would have been as liberal with my thinking and in my abilities.”
Maticevski has always called Melbourne home, even when he was regularly showing in New York. “It was costing too much and as much as it was truly fun, this is a business and not a hobby. I had to re-evaluate what I wanted and how to get some money in the bank.”
He has an amazing private clientele that stretches from China to Saudi Arabia to the US, Europe and of course Australia. It is as if these women have formed a Maticevski fan club and yet he feels the same as when he was finishing his undergraduate degree.
In 13 years he has transformed from fresh-faced boy to seasoned veteran who still doesn’t know it all.
“I still love fashion and enjoy creating the same way I did back then. There are no regrets. The journey I have taken is the journey I am glad I took.
“RMIT was where I got a chance to explore techniques and aesthetics and build on my visual language; but now I feel in essence still like a student because fashion is always a learning game and, just like in university, you need to stay ahead of the game to try to compete not with anyone else but yourself.”
As much as he’s changed, he’s not been able to totally throw off his shyness. “I am not selling myself but my designs,” he says, “but lately I’ve realised that in some weird way they go hand in hand.”
“Toni is more of an artist than a hardened businessman,” says Harper’s Bazaar Australia editor Edwina McCann, who has watched him develop right from the very beginning.
“Toni is committed to his vision and works very hard. He perhaps could have gone down a more commercial route but, knowing him, I don’t think he would have been happy doing so.”
That’s a sentiment many people pick up on: that Maticevski has to be true to Maticevski.
Myer Group’s general manager of merchandise, Judy Coomber, started buying Maticevski’s collection in 2004. “Toni is true to his vision and where he wants his label to head,” she says. “He is without doubt one of the most talented designers. He does not compromise.”
Coomber says that Maticevski needs to be more accessible.
“I think it has always been inherent. I have always sensed it,” he says.
“It is interesting. Even today people come up to me and say they can spot my work apart from everyone else, which is I guess is the best compliment.”
McCann says the effect of Maticevski’s designs is magic. “His use of beautiful, often delicate fabrics and the clever, light construction of his garments mean they almost look like they are floating around the body of the wearer.”
The evolutionary aspect of Maticevski’s work will never be completed. It’s being driven by his desire to be better and his deep love of design. The influences come from everywhere.
“I guess it is associated with everyone I work or collaborate with and all their experience becomes intermingled with all that I do. My eye can develop by other people’s aesthetics and opinions,” he says.
“I am always evolving through the way I look at things from models, to fabrics to silhouettes. I constantly question the status quo of things and try to re-imagine. I adapt, change and grow, and my designing benefits from it.”
Maticevski’s creative process is not compartmentalised. “I don’t consciously divide my time. Sometimes I give myself chunks of time, like next week is purely for creating and the following week is all about business. My process is fluid, and this works best for me.”
His unique collections are sometimes misunderstood by people in the industry.
“I would like the industry to be a little more open-minded to things that don’t follow the rules. Sometimes there is no understanding of what I do so I am categorised into spots that are really not relevant to what I do.”
The media also sometimes doesn’t get what he’s all about. “Sections of the press can laud you as the next big thing, which in itself is a curse because of the expectation that imposes. Other sections may misunderstand what you’re trying to achieve. I’ve seen it from both sides.”
To the hundreds of students of fashion who envy him for his success, Maticevski has these words of advice. “Ask yourself why you are in it and what you want to achieve and then make sure you see it through.”
His workshop is busy as he puts the finishing touches to his latest collections, which will premiere at Sydney Fashion Week in May. \

“He is charmingly shy but having more access to him can change the volume of his business. I know lately he is making necessary steps to change this.”
She acknowledges that having a department store as your major stockist can have its problems but adds “our marriage works seamlessly”.
It is the business side of the Maticevski label that is the more difficult.
“I am learning, learning to hand things over and delegate – learning not to be so involved once I have given somebody else a task,” Maticevski says.
“I think I like designing because it was probably the only thing that I could control and did not need to rely on anyone. I am beginning to realise that having a good team is just as important as having winning ideas.”
Some time last year Maticevski repositioned his business. He stopped collaboration with accessories and shoes and decided to take control of his ready-to-wear line. Not that anything was wrong, he just “wanted clear defining lines for his collections”.
There’s Maticevski ready-to-wear stocked in Myer nationally and a few select boutiques, and there’s Toni Maticevski Collection, a pricier, more individualistic range.
Maticevski describes his essential design elements as “his handwriting”.

L ast week I wrote about single-vineyard wines and how, to many people, they represent the pinnacle of winemaking. This week is about wines at the
other end of the spectrum, where value and consistency are the driving forces: multi-vineyard blends.
The focus of single-vineyard wines leaves it up to the grapes to express themselves in the bottle, while blends from multiple vineyards tend to focus on composing wines of consistent quality, regionality and volume.
The blend has been a mainstay of the Australian wine industry for the past half-century and it will be so for many years to come. The reason for that is simple: wines made from grapes grown at multiple vineyards can be made in great volumes.
Most single vineyards aren’t big enough to produce wines in large enough volumes to reach mass markets. But wines made of grapes from multiple sites can be produced in volumes that reach all corners of our sunburnt country and beyond.
The hand of the winemaker is far more present in blended wines, especially in the $7-$15 price range, as they craft wines of consistent quality year-in, year-out.
It takes a lot of skill to produce a wine that keeps customers loyal to a brand, coming back each year.
Last year I attended a wine media event in the Barossa to taste wines from 16 different Jacob’s Creek shiraz vineyards dotted all over the Barossa.
The wines were all from the same vintage, 2010, and made in exactly the same way to allow the winemaking team to assess the vineyards in a controlled way.
It was a fascinating tasting of single-vineyard wines and a great insight into this revered region.
There were some very smart individual wines among the glasses, but none of these will ever be found on the shelf of your local bottleshop – the wines were all
Station includes grapes sourced from the wider Yarra Valley; and the excellent Windy Peak chardonnay, a multi-region blend with grapes sourced from vineyards around Victoria.
Multi-region blendsMulti-region wines paved the way for the international reputation we now hold in the wine world for clean, tasty and well-priced wines.
While the focus in many circles is on single-vineyard wines, the multi-region blend still has a big part to play in the Australian wine landscape.
That well-priced, unwooded chardonnay from south-eastern Australia you couldn’t get enough of over summer might have components from Riverina, Adelaide Hills and the Yarra Valley, with each region adding something to the wine – the cooler Yarra Valley and Adelaide Hills giving the wine a citrus acid backbone, with the Riverina adding the fruity flesh.
Winemakers will often play to regional strengths and blend shiraz from the Barossa and cabernet from Coonawarra to produce classic Australian wines that are unique.
It’s not just low-cost wines that are multi-region blends – Penfold’s Grange and Yattarna are sourced from multiple regions – and many of our best sparklings are often derived from multiple cool-climate regions, including Tasmania, the Yarra Valley and the Adelaide Hills. \

blended into one of Jacob’s Creek’s four levels of shiraz – Jacob’s Creek, Regional Reserve, the new St Hugo or Centenary Hill.
Regional blendsIt’s a fairly common practice for wineries to buy in grapes from neighbouring vineyards to include in their wines. Many produce an “estate” wine using grapes grown on their own vineyards and another, often cheaper, wine using a blend of their own grapes and others from further afield.
De Bortoli chardonnay is a good example of this – there is the estate-grown chardonnay produced from its own vineyards in the Yarra Valley; the Gulf

Love a bargain?Seppelt Chalamber Shiraz 2009(Grampians, Bendigo) $26.99; 13.5%★★★★
Here’s a wine that, without fail, falls into the bargain territory every year. Grapes from the Grampians give the wine elegance and Bendigo brings intensity. It’s complex and intense, with smells and flavours of plums, cherries, mint, violets, white pepper, cedar oak and an orange-zest lift. The wine glides along the tongue with fine tannins delivering brooding, lengthy cherry and plum flavours to the finish. Chalambar has a history of ageing well and this will drink well for years.Food match \ Braised lamb shanks
Domaine Chandon Vintage Brut Rosé 2008 (Australia) $39.95; 12.5%★★★★★
Forty individual base wines from eight regions in the four southern states were blended into this wine of wonderful complexity. It’s a nearly equal blend of chardonnay and pinot noir and offers alluring aromas of cherry, strawberry, brioche, spice, honey and freshly baked almond croissant. It tastes of red berries, lemon zest and pith along with gentle toasty notes. It’s creamy across the palate, with refreshing, chalky acid and an intense finish that builds and builds.Food match \ Fetta and watermelon salad
Howard Park Sauvignon Blanc 2011(Great Southern, Margaret River)$29; 13% ★★★★ ½Two-thirds of the grapes come from Great Southern, the remainder from Margaret River. It’s attractive-smelling: tropical fruits, fresh-cut apple and a touch of tomato leaf. The wine comes alive in the mouth with intense lemon, lime, cut grass, lemongrass and more tropical fruit flavours. A touch of smoke and minerality add complexity. There’s a real drive along the palate, where a slippery texture and refreshing acid lead to an impressive finish.Food match \ Vietnamese chicken coleslaw
Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz 2008(Barossa) $19; 14.5%★★★★
Rich, opulent Barossa shiraz for under 20 bucks? Yes please. I paid just over $11 for a bottle of this the other day at one of the chains. The wine is full of dense, plum, dark cherry, redcurrant, blackberry, cedar oak and spice, with a dried orange-peel note that cuts nicely through the rich flavours. It’s well-structured – there’s not a hair out of place – with fine tannins and voluptuous flavour kept in check by bright acid. There’s some real character here, too, placing it high on the drinkability scale.Food match \ Grilled lamb rump

Blended from grapes grown around Victoria, including the Yarra and King valleys, it’s a wine of amazing finesse for the price. It’s flavoured with white stonefruit (flesh and blossom), melon, honey and a damp earth-like character that adds interest and complexity. It’s smooth on the palate with an acid structure that gently builds and builds in a refreshing crescendo on the finish.Food match \ Pan-seared scallops with romesco sauce

This Weston Street beer-worshipping haven offers the thrill of discovery. Its elegant, clever interior design reflects both irony and reverence. Irony in the textured roof that represents a foaming head of beer and the meaningful words, phrases and images around the room, and reverence in the abundance of stainless steel and the vantage points from which it can be viewed. Glass panels etched with images of hops, stunning red gum benches and polished metal stools are eye-catching, but use of polished stone and metal at the altar – the well-appointed kitchen and sleek service area – indicates serious intent. \

t he discussion behind us was animated and opinionated. (And you thought wine experts could be overbearing.) The dialogue debated
the merits of beer and its ability to pair with food, the importance of contrasting flavours and the roles played by both bitterness and carbonation. Later, it extended to the virtues of light beers served with spicy food.
But tucked in his slick, modern kitchen, chef Raymond Chang couldn’t hear a thing. He would more than likely be willing to listen and take it all in, but despite having spent months researching, emulating and experimenting with the foods enjoyed by beer-drinking cultures, he says: “We don’t take the food and beer matching too seriously here. There are no hard and fast rules.
“Our menu has been created to offer things that are fun and satisfying to eat while you are drinking and tasting beer.”
Chang (The Merri Table, Mrs Jones, Vue de Monde) met Temple Brewing Company’s owners, Ron and Renata Feruglio, at an agricultural society dinner several years ago.
The trio (among themselves they are R1, R2 and R3) found they shared many opinions on food, and beer.
Craft beer drinkers will know the name Temple, a boutique company begun by passionate home brewer Ron Feruglio in 2005 following his success on the home brewing circuit (VicBrew champion Brewer 2004).
For several years, Feruglio, with the support of wife Renata, brewed his brand on other people’s premises. Their success culminated in a gold medal for their Temple Special Bitter draught ale at the 2010 Australian International Beer Awards.
Two years ago, the Feruglios decided to build their own brewery. It took 18 months to plan, another six to build and it opened just before Christmas.
The impressive layout and stunning design has kept growth in mind. There are six stainless steel, copper-banded fermenting tanks capable of brewing up to 200,000 litres, and there’s room to double capacity.
The Brunswick East brewery will attract many as enthusiastic as the vocal crowd behind us. There are currently six beers on offer: the Brunswick Draught, which features the Australian hop variety Pride of Ringwood; Bicycle Beer, a tart, spritzy brew created with red wheat, spelt and salt from an ancient sea bed in the Grampians; Pale Ale; Soba Ale; Saison, a Belgian-style farmhouse ale; and a jet-black Midnight India Pale Ale.
Five of them are featured on a tasting wheel. There’s also a meticulous winelist of two sparklings, two whites and two reds from Victoria, France and Italy.
Chang’s menu, self-described as a “slow-food take on the junk-food classics” includes half-a-dozen snacking options from excellent almonds roasted in butter and spiced with salt and rosemary to a Brunswick rarebit (a take on the classic Welsh dish) that uses some of the brewery’s own Brunswick Draught.
We chose the drowned pork sop and the goulash. The pork is a terrific dish – its meat slow-roasted, then shredded and grilled for crispness. It’s dressed with a sweet and spicy jalapeno broth and served on a delicate, airy tile of ciabatta bread that soaks up the juices admirably.
Eat it with your fingers if you’re game – a knife and fork if your companions are drinking less than you.
The goulash, a dish Chang says he researched for months, poring over hundreds of recipes, “retains a common thread and the integrity of the traditional dish” but includes a smokey paprika that he says better complements many of the beers. The night we dined, it was served with spaccatelle pasta and peas and, while the meat was well flavoured and of good texture, it didn’t fuse with the pasta well and needed more sauce. Chang is planning to use dumpling-style pasta in future.
I have to confess to not trying the house’s only dessert – a golden-syrup pudding, served with cream. To some, it might be beer food – but I’d probably start a debate about the merits of dessert wine. \
There are also some divine pickled quail eggs, served with a selection of zingy, bright pickled vegetables and the already popular batata harra, a hearty bowl of crunchy-outside, fluffy-inside golden fried potatoes covered with lashings of dark mustard and mayonnaise.
I regret not trying the chilli bag, because the idea sounded entertaining. It’s an American-style chilli beef braise served with sour cream and a bag of organic corn chips. The menu suggests pouring the chilli mix into the bag, but the couple in front of us ate it more politely.

BOOKS \ CORRIE PERKIN SAYS BORIS JOHNSON IS A glORIOuS NON-fICtION wRItER
Y ou’d think that after last summer’s riots, an imploding Murdoch news empire, a phone hacking-tainted police force and the forthcoming
Olympic Games, London lord mayor Boris Johnson might have run a mile from a book deal with tight deadlines. But his agreement with HarperCollins to write a biography of his city may yet prove one of the most significant decisions of his.
Forget for a moment that Rupert Murdoch owns HarperCollins, and that Johnson probably should have avoided such a link between himself and the controversial publisher so tainted by scandal: Johnson’s Life of London: The People Who Made the City That Made the World is a terrific read.
The former MP and Spectator editor is a glorious non-fiction writer whose wit – such a part of his literary DNA – is on full display here.
He writes about London as though it is a dear and familiar ageing relative, and regularly hurtles himself into the action. As a recent Spectator review stated, “even though he’s got 2000 years of such promising material to work with, Johnson, proud capitalist that he is, takes care to add value of his own”.
Johnson argues that “London is just about the most culturally, technologically, politically and linguistically influential city of the last 500 years”.
He adds that “it is the city that gives the ambitious person the scope to eavesdrop, borrow or just intuit the ideas of others, and then meld them with his own and come up with something new”.
This can happen in any big city, of course. But Johnson maintains that London’s size, diverse population, environment, infrastructure and its astoundingly clever forebears have helped create
“that thing that the Romans understood so well: a global brand. They have left the city with a reputation that makes people want to come here and tramp over London Bridge in search of money, food, fame, companionship – all the things that make a human being tick.”
Johnson pays homage to some of the city’s great characters: Boudica and Hadrian in the early days; Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare; the artist J.M.W. Turner; financier Lionel Rothschild, whose family “bankrolled the war effort against Napoleon and so – in the language of the day – saved the continent from tyranny”; W.T. Stead, owner of the Pall Mall Gazette, the world’s first tabloid; Winston Churchill and, rather bizarrely, Rolling Stone Keith Richards, whose partnership with Mick Jagger, and particular London sound, took rock music –“ the most important popular art form of the 20th century” – to new heights.
Johnson can’t resist a bit of pollie propaganda, and the final chapter’s summary of civic achievements will drive his Westminster opponents nuts. But in this Olympic year, as we stare towards London and wonder what makes it great, it is worth having a browse through Boris Johnson’s love letter to a city whose charms, by the end, we find hard to resist. \

Johnson pays homage to London’s

12 The weekly review \ March 14, 2012
Although the movie starring George Clooney failed to ignite the passions of this year’s Academy Award judges, we suspect this 2007 novel will gain some positive word-of-mouth support, thanks to its new Hollywood connection. The enviable lifestyle of Matthew, a member of a wealthy Hawaiian family, is shattered when his wife is taken to hospital in a coma after a serious boating accident. Trying to manage his difficult 10 and 17-year-old daughters, and at the same time discovering his wife had been having an affair, rocks his world. The family’s shift towards safer, calmer emotional waters ensures this is a compelling, if at times blackly humorous, read. \
There is a strong argument for placing Robert Dessaix’s latest collection of essays and speeches in the travel section of a bookshop. So much of his writing is about place, and so many of his stories involve cities and people in other lands; for armchair travellers, he is the perfect guide. But his literary skill and intellectual rigour demand this book be placed in a shop’s ideas, opinions and new anthologies section, where it can jostle for the reader’s attention. The name “Dessaix’’ is enough to prompt some people to buy a copy. And if that doesn’t work, just throw them a couple of discussion topics as teasers, such as: what makes good conversation; why people travel; good grammar and the plight of the subjunctive; and Australia. \
This hardcover edition is a reproduction of the original 1912 report of the Titanic’s sinking several months earlier. With the 100th anniversary of the tragedy just a few weeks away, it is worth accessing a book such as this as your entrée point into the disaster. There are plenty of picture and ephemera collections selling in bookshops, but I prefer a journal such as this that relies on first-hand accounts and secondary evidence, and that allows word pictures rather than photographs to transport me. It’s worth mentioning the back section of the book, which deals with resulting investigations and court cases. Fascinating stuff! \
Either the author-illustrator was taking mind-altering drugs at the time of conceiving this hilarious book or he is, by nature, a very funny person. The pairing of woolly sheep who each play the guitar and colourful caterpillars with a penchant for dressing up is not an obvious one. But the joy of this book is, it works. Sharratt has created a fabulous lift-the-flap counting book that will keep the two-plus toddlers – and their parents – amused for hours. \

Tiles in the splashback are pristine, and set into one bench is a barely used Falcon stove. The butler’s pantry is large and practical and only an arm’s length from the benchtop. Expensive joinery, ample storage and stained-glass windows complete the picture in the kitchen.
This house also shows that the family spaces can be family-friendly and showpieces at the same time. In the informal living zone, high ceilings with decorative cornices and chandeliers and a feature fireplace provide an added edge, while two sets of french doors lead to a very large timber deck for outdoor entertaining.
Zoned living is very much a buzz word in real estate. And this house has it in spades. Children have their own area with the upstairs retreat, bedrooms and bathroom. Parents can wind down in front of the open fire in the front room in winter, and the whole family can come together in the wide open spaces of the informal living zone.
With its gabled roofline and matching red brickwork, including red-brick piers, this deck is effectively an extra room that provides a great place for looking at the back garden and swimming pool. Five steps take you down to a paved back garden and the pool. Still in this part of the garden, a brick garage that has space aplenty for two or more cars plus workshop if needed.
More garden and lawn occupies the full width of the block beyond the garage. \

For a suburb just 10 kilometres from the centre of the city, Heidelberg Heights often flies under the radar, while its
better-known neighbours such as Ivanhoe, Heidelberg and Rosanna get
all the attention. But now, like a sleeping giant, Heidelberg Heights is
starting to awaken from its slumber. And what’s on view looks very inviting.
Take this property, which is a classic example of what makes this pocket of Heidelberg Heights an area to watch.
The clinker-brick 1940s house, set on 864 square metres of land, has been stylishly renovated and remodelled, making it something of a flag bearer for the area that is just on the border with Ivanhoe.
An excellent house-to-land balance gives it substantial gardens including a swimming pool.
It started life as a traditional three-bedroom brick house with rooms off an entry hall.
Fast-forward several decades and a renovation later and there are large open-plan living spaces and a second storey that includes two bedrooms, a retreat/study and a large bathroom with separate toilet. In the downstairs bathroom, the double shower and twin basins are more signs that a lot of thought went into this renovation.
Yet it still has the features that give a house character. While there’s no telling what the original approach would have been like, today’s entry is down a gently curved and expensively paved path through manicured lawns. Low hedges of English box frame beds with clipped and topiaried shrubs, providing a real sense of order that is very pleasing to the eye.
The wide entrance hall, with rooms on either side, also leads to the main bedroom with its lovely garden views. In the formal front room, the timber mantel sits above an open fireplace with a brick surround and tiled hearth. Picture rails, skirting boards and deep window sills are original features that show respect for the period. So too in the front bedroom, where original features have been kept.
But it is in the vast open-plan living/eating and kitchen hub that this house really shines.
Here the surfaces positively gleam. And it is not just the shining floorboards. The kitchen, including the island bench, features high-gloss blackwood benchtops.

In the 1930s, A. V. Jennings developed his first estate on what was a 5.7-hectare site of an old nursery. Today, Ivanhoe’s exclusive Beaumont Estate remains beautifully intact, thanks in part to a council overlay. The
92 original houses, both modernist and English domestic revival, still grace the quiet tree-lined streets. A beautiful example of the latter style sits at the end of Lincoln Court.
This property abounds in charm – from the walled front garden and the arched portico entrance to the rear courtyard shaded by a towering oak. The finer features inside are in immaculate condition. Take the decorative deco mouldings on the ceilings, with cornices to match.
Units this good tend to attract buyers from both ends of the spectrum. Young professional couples could see this as the ideal way to get into the blue-ribbon Ivanhoe property market. And for empty nesters, it
is a single-level residence that enables them to downsize without leaving the leafy green suburb they love. However, anyone can appreciate the high-quality finish here, and the seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. One of five, but ideally positioned further away from the street, the unit has been built sympathetic to Ivanhoe’s historic roots. It has a pretty clinker-brick trim and the irregular bluestone paving in the courtyard adds a touch of art deco flair. There is room for dinner parties in the main living hub. The kitchen has granite benchtops, glass splashback, Blanco appliances and wine storage. The two bedrooms share a large bathroom. The single garage has a remote-controlled door, internal access and enough space at the rear for a workshop. \ liam carter
This Doreen Estate is only about seven years old but you certainly wouldn’t know it. The trees are established and the gardens in bloom. Perhaps the only giveaway is the modernity of the houses. No mission-
brown brick here, just smart, contemporary houses such as No.30 Glass Crescent. This property sits at the end of a quiet court. The house is deceptively large, with living spaces stretching right up to the back fence of the 980-square metre block. The outdoor areas face north and are at the side of the house. There is a flat back lawn, a covered terrace and a large pool with sandstone surrounds. Watch the kids swimming from the expansive kitchen with its stone benches, glass splashback and Bosch appliances. Accommodation is thoughtfully zoned. The three-bedroom kids’ wing includes a bathroom. Parents have their own presidential-style suite. It has room for study or lounge, large bedroom, dressing room and open en suite with twin vanity and spa. \ liam carter

Or the finely carved detail on the curtain railings and architraves. Even the bricks that surround the fireplace in the lounge are engraved with artisan-style refinery.
Double timber doors, with a stunning grain, slide open to bring the lounge and dining rooms together. The nearby kitchen could do with a renovation but is clean and functional. This is the sort of place that could be left as is or sympathetically extended into the backyard, or up. In its current form, two bedrooms in the main house are complemented by a detached studio and single garage, the ideal home office. There is only one bathroom, but what a bathroom. It is an interwar original with green tiling, deco bath and flecked stone floors. \ liam carter

Don’t worry about weeding the backyard or having to change those drab old curtains. Here at 25 Meruka Drive, everything is done for you. Built not long ago, the house looks and feels brand new. It has sleek
and contemporary interiors combining timber floors and venetian blinds, high ceilings with downlights and a neutral palette unlikely to date any time soon.
The exteriors blend rough, earth-toned render and rich timber panelling to complement the typically Eltham setting. The elevated position allows for views of surrounding hills and a stretch of the railroad linking Eltham and Montmorency. The vistas are best enjoyed from the deep back deck perched above an established and low-maintenance backyard flush with soaring gums, native grasses and evergreen plants.
Every inch of this hillside 864-square metre block has been beautifully tended. The same goes for inside. The kitchen includes stunning stone benches and Smeg appliances. The nearby living and dining hub has a Jindara fireplace with granite hearth. Accommodation is cleverly zoned in three areas. The main bedroom is by the entrance and has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Upstairs, a good-sized retreat separates two kids’ bedrooms and a large guest bedroom with bathroom.
For those seeking even more privacy, there is a lower-level gym or studio hidden beneath the deck. The property includes a double garage with internal access through the laundry and powder room. \ liam carter

Just over a decade old and set at the rear of a large block, this chalet-style house has a pale-yellow and light-blue colour scheme. The scent of eucalyptus is noticeable right up to the front door. The house is
surrounded by tall native trees and the sounds of chirping birds can be heard from any room. The blue kitchen, dining area and lounge are at the house’s entrance. The lounge has sliding doors that lead onto decking. It overlooks the backyard and an outdoor dining area where a table has been made from the stump of a tree. Two downstairs bedrooms share the blue-and-white tiled bathroom. The main bedroom and a second bathroom are upstairs. There’s also another living area for the parents and french doors lead to a private deck. Teenagers have their own place – in the mud brick studio. It’s a self-contained unit with a kitchen, bathroom, lounge and place to sleep. The walls are 25 centimetres thick and a natural gas pot-belly heater warms it on cooler nights. \ bianca villarosa
This updated Greensborough house has several living areas and a funky colour palette that brings the place to life. Almost every room is a different colour or has a feature wall that injects colour into the
area. The carpeted lounge is at the entrance and has a mahogany feature wall. It leads to the dining area and the timber kitchen, which has views overlooking the outdoor entertainment space, covered by Perspex. It looks out to the backyard, which has ample lawn space. As the weather cools down, retreat to the family room, which has polished floors, lemon-coloured walls and a deep-blue feature wall. The main bedroom is at the front of the house. The second bedroom has pale-pink walls and the third has lime-green walls. They all have built-in wardrobes and share the central, family bathroom. This property also features ample off-street parking and plenty of under-house storage, which could be transformed into a great spot where the young ones can hang out with friends. \ bianca villarosa
