Wake Forest Feb 17-Capt B D I owler oldest Wake Forest College alumnus will celebrate his 100th birthday tomorromiddotw He is actually one year older than the college itshyself III a recent letter to Presishydent Thurman lJ_ Kitchin from Dumiddot ar te Cal where he resides the old gentleman at tributed his lonievity and happiness to hard work modshyerat eating and applieation of the Golden Rllle

The centenarian is the 188t of his seVen classmates ho graduated here in 1857_ The r ecords show that as commencement speaker that year he delivered an oration on Republican- I iam He Ilti1l is tn good health and walks without a cane

Mr Fowler has lived in the West for over 60 yean having gone there as a Ichool t eacher Boon after gradu ation mil interests Roon turned to f ruit growing and in thilt business he reared a large family who han become prosperous ranch men and businesa men of 1I0uthern California Volunteering for service at the outbreak of t he Civil War ~r Fowshyler after ix mont hs had become a captain He aerved under General ritzhugh Lee and was with Stoneshywall J acklona soldiers the night he was shot It was not until the next mornin g when another general W88 in command hi letter ran that we knew Jackeon had been killed

The following is an extract from a letter te lling of Mr Fowler

It may interest you to know that an uncle of mine and a graduate of Wake Forest College class of 1857 (1) Capt H D Fowler Duarte aliornia ~i ~l be one hundred years old on February 28 1932

At the outbreak of the Civil 1ar my uncle entered the Confederate Army a second ieutenant in Company I First U C egshyiment which forme a part of D H Hill s Dishyvision and advanced to Captain of his co~pany He took part in the Seven Days Battle around Richmond and was in the thick of it at ~lvern Hill He also served under Fitzhugh- Lee ~ His divisi n and Jackson s were t ogether at the time of the latters death and he says that he heard the shot that killed Jackson He was in prison in Fortress Monroe f or nearly two years bef ore the cl ose of the war (Here he was put on starva- tion rations The half rations consisted of a small portion of mush and two pickles for proshytection against scurvy The man who had the con- tract to furnish the pickles did not cure them ~roperly They were merely cucumbers soaked in Sa l t water and the off i cers were unable to eat them Two thirds of the prisoners here died )

Following the war Capt Fowler joined the westward movement and emigrated fi rst to Arkansas and then to California whe r e he enshytered the fruitgrowing industry and developed large interests He has always been a loyal Baptist and has given l iberally to the support of the University of Red l ands the denominttional college in h i s adopted state He has reared a la r ge family and they are all well-to-do and progressive ranchrlen and business men of Southern California---
