Solemnity of the Sacred Heart

Friday, June 11, is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In our church, there is the beautiful mural of the apparition of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary. The mural is behind the tabernacle.

Second Collection

Hoy es el Cuarto Domingo de Pascua y este Cuarto Domingo se conoce comúnmente como Domingo del Buen Pastor. El evangelio de este cuarto

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de Ascencion,

Hoy celebramos en la iglesia la fiesta del Corpus Christi, el Cuerpo de Cristo. La Fiesta del Corpus Christi, o Fiesta del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, se remonta al siglo XIII, pero celebra algo mucho más antiguo: la institución de la Eucaristía en la Última Cena. Como católicos, reafirmamos el hecho de que Jesús está real y verdaderamente presente en la Eucaristía, a diferencia de otras religiones que ven la comunión como un mero “signo”. Si bien el día de la fiesta se centra y enfatiza en la Eucaristía, también debemos reafirmar nuestra creencia en el cuerpo místico de Cristo. La Iglesia se llama cuerpo, porque es una entidad viviente; se le llama cuerpo de Cristo, porque Cristo es su Cabeza y Fundador; se llama cuerpo místico, porque no es una unidad puramente física ni puramente espiritual, sino sobrenatural.

Curiosamente, este es uno de los 10 festivos de obligación. La fiesta se celebra oficialmente el jueves después del domingo de la Trinidad y, sin embargo, debido a su importancia, el día siempre se transfiere (en los Estados Unidos) al domingo siguiente. Hoy, después de la Misa de las 12:30 PM, habrá una Procesión Eucarística por las calles. Habrá dos bendiciones afuera, la tercera y última se celebra en la iglesia. Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Today we celebrate in the church the Feast of Corpus Christi -- the Body of Christ. The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ goes back to the 13th century, but it celebrates something far older: the institution of the the Eucharist at the Last Supper. As Catholics, we reaffirm the fact that Jesus is really and truly present in the Eucharist, unlike other religions that see communion as being mere a “sign.” While the feast day places it’s focus and emphasis on the Eucharist, we also need to reaffirm our belief in the mystical body of Christ. The Church is called body, because it is a living entity; it is called the body of Christ, because Christ is its Head and Founder; it is called mystical body, because it is neither a purely physical nor a purely spiritual unity, butsupernatural.

Curiously, this is one of the 10 holydays of obligation. The feast is officially celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, and yet because of its importance, the day is always transferred (in the United States) to the following Sunday. Today, after the 12:30PM Mass, there will be a Eucharistic Procession through the streets. There will be two benedictions outside, the third and final one is celebrated in the church. We will still be very mindful of COVID restrictions and guidelines.

Here are Ascension, we are extraordinarily blessed with excellent music in both languages — blessed with the Walkirios at the 9:30 and 12:30 Mass each Sunday and the English Choir at 11 AM. The choir at the 11:00 AM Mass usually sings from October until today (Corpus Christi Sunday.) There obviously has been no choir since the onset of COVID. Many of the guidelines and recommendations of the CDC have either been lifted or modified. To that end, we hope to be able to resume with our wonderful choir come October. We hope to do something in the fall to celebrate that. I thank all of our musicians for all of their dedication and flexibility during this time of COVID. Good music is an essential part of good liturgy. Thank you again to Preston, Jose Baez, and all our wonderful musicians for the uplifting and inspiring music at our Sunday and special liturgies.

One of the many unique things that attracts people to Ascension is our weekly Jazz Mass. The Jazz Music continues to be directed and coordinated by Peter Hartmann. Since our numbers at the Jazz Mass have been consistently low during this time of COVID, we have been celebrating the Jazz Mass just once a month. We hope to be able to go back to a weekly Jazz Mass in the month of October. Hopefully students will be returning and hopefully more people will feel comfortable coming back to Mass by then.

I also wish to thank everyone who has been so attentive and respectul to our ushers during this time of COVID. They have been very helpful in trying to help all of us maintain the necessary social distancing. They have had a most difficult job and they have done a very fine job. In your name, I thank all of our ushers most sincerely, particularly our usher leaders/dirigentes, Jose Pichardo (5:30 PM and 9:30 AM), Minerva and Jesus Rodriguez (11:00 AM), and Doris Felix (12:30 PM). They have being doing this responsibly for the past year! Thank you to all our dedicated ushers!
