Apparently you can be immune to these stings all your life and can then become allergic to them. Information from the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunolgy and Allergy www.allergy.org.au says that around 2- 3% of people have had general allergic reactions and around half of those can have severe reactions which can be life threatening. I was wondering what to write for this month’s editorial, when it came to me that I hadn’t written one for quite a few months. Not because I didn’t want to you’ll understand, but I thought it was a great opportunity to let others have their say.

Mt Arthur Centre News Hello community members of Lilydale, for those of you who have moved into the district recently, a big welcome.

This year at the Mt Arthur Centre we will be focusing on various activities that you or your friends from out of the district would like to run here. For those of you who don't know, the Centre is a non-profit community space, run by volunteers, for the benefit of the Lilydale community (and Tasmanian community at large).

We really do need your support to keep going, and we ask that you look out for, and join us for our fundraising activities and come and have some fun at our working bee/bbq's to be held later this year. Please come and have a look and say hello - this is no ordinary place and it's here for you!

Carol and Gayle are in the office on Tuesdays between 9.00am and 2.00pm, and you can leave a message on the ph if you are interested in hiring the Centre, or pick up a pamphlet in one of the Lilydale shops or at the school.

A regular activity held here is a YOGA session, every Wednesday evening between 6.30pm and 8.00pm. The cost is $12.00 per session. So if you're feeling you need to tone-up and de-stress you would be most welcome. For more details, especially if you're not sure what yoga entails or what you need to bring, plse ph Sarah on 6395 1057.

If you're looking for a space to hold a function of any sort, or activity that requires a beautiful bush setting, (we are set on 10 hectares of land), we offer the Centre for hire. If you are a community group the rate is only $10.00 per hour (guides, playgroup, homeschoolers, craft etc.), more if you are a private function.

To date this year we've had a very special Salsa party, (the party of the year - it really was that good!) a family re-union, and a renewal of wedding vows party, but we need lots more bookings to pay the running costs of the Centre (especially the insurance!!).

Coming up we have a Revisit The Magic Of 123, parenting skills workshop, run by Relationships Australia, March 23rd, 6.30pm-9.30pm, $20.00 per person (contact Kate on 6336 7000 for more details) and a wedding. Last year the Centre was used for landcare activities, an aboriginal education day, two weddings, art therapy workshops, a Buddhist retreat, a quilting gathering, birthday parties, bbq's, and various workshops. What could you use your Centre for??

For more information, please don't hesitate to contact us on 6395 1201. Regards, Maggie.

What a wonderful summer we have had once it started, with extended days of warmth, but, where did February go? The poplar trees in Launceston’s Royal Park are already turning gold.

Two of our folk have been away for a break and we will be glad to welcome Mavis back this week.

Enid enjoyed a trip north to stay with members of her family which gave her respite from all the cooking that normally goes on in her home in Scottsdale.

Heather has resumed her regular visits to lead us in singing and Jennifer Smyth’s smiling face has appeared several times to fill us in on what is going on in the world.

Interesting after lunch discussions have been held with two topics in particular stimulating wonderful, lively participation. These were Household Hints, which would have been worth recording, and Family Relationships and the effect our position in the family had on our siblings and ourselves.

An invitation has been received to attend an afternoon tea at the Aldersgate Nursing Home at Rocherlea on the 28th March. These outings are always enjoyed.

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Darian’s much loved father and we and the Board extend our sincere sympathy to Darian and all her family.

Another event, which we would rather not have needed to have, was a morning tea here at the centre farewell Sue Morris. Sue and her husband Eric, are leaving our community shortly to live on Vancouver Island in Canada to be nearer to their family. Sue was a past staff member and volunteer at this centre and has been a wonderful friend to many. She will be greatly missed by us, as will the injured and orphaned baby possums, wallabies and wombats that have been lovingly cared for over the past eight years. Their loss I suppose will be the baby black bears gain. We wish Sue and Eric (and their two cats) safe travel and many happy years in their new chosen land. We will expect lots of post cards telling of their doings to pin to the notice board.

Senior Citizens Club

It is with pleasure we would like to welcome 3 new comers to our Club, Barbara, Doreen and Geoff. Our Club is really starting to grow with up to 19 practising on a Friday.

The State Bowls Carnival is being held at Deloraine this year on the 1st and 2nd March. I’m sure it will be well represented by the Northerners. Lilydale sent 3 teams to Perth, lots of people commented it was the best bowls day they had had for a long time. Of course

Lilydale CWA

CWA resumed in February with lunch to share. Being the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of C.W.A in Tasmania this year, thee are many celebrations planned. The main event being the 14th February when representatives from all around the State attended a civic reception at the Launceston Town Hall followed by a luncheon at the ‘Tramshed” for all members, with the one and only Junior member in the state (from our branch) attending.

The Launceston Branch, which was the original branch to start C.W.A in the State had their 70th birthday celebration with a party late in the month. We are having our Commonwealth Games on the 20th April – 1.30 p.m. Come one! Come all! For a very enjoyable time.

Just after the long weekend in June, we shall have a party to honour Her Majesty’s 80th.

Our 67th birthday is in April.

Ladies! Interested in becoming members? You would be very welcome.

Health Notes from Lilydale Pharmacy

Hatching up a treatment for head lice

With school now back in full swing, children will be meeting old friends and making some new friends too. Probably, “sleep-overs” will again become part of the school-year landscape. But, beware, you could be entertaining some uninvited guests as well.

According to statistics from the NSW Health Department, more than 20% of primary school students are likely to have head lice; and it’s unlikely these statistics would vary too much from state to state.

Given the number of enquiries in pharmacies, it seems quite possible that eradication of head lice is one of the most frustrating problems encountered by parents.

The fact is anyone with a head can catch head lice – regardless of age, sex, background or how clean your hair is. Head lice spread anywhere that people work, play and live together. Most often children get them at school – often at the start of school. Indeed, it takes only one infested head to infest a whole classroom full of heads; then our children so unselfishly pass the infestation on to the rest of the family.

Head lice are wingless insects that make their home in the hair. Their favourite hiding places are behind the ears and at the back of the neck. Female lice lay their eggs (known as nits) close to the scalp, where they remain firmly stuck to the base of the hair shaft until they hatch in about a week’s time.

Head lice actually survive by feeding on blood they suck from the scalp – in a similar way to a mosquito. Unlike mosquitos, it appears head lice do not carry disease. However, they can cause severe itching and this can lead to scratching and skin infections.

The good news is that if you or your children have head lice, there are simple, safe and effective ways to manage the problem. Various shampoos, lotions, cream rinses and conditioners are available. Your pharmacist can advise you about which is best for you. Head lice can become resistant, and if you have used treatments before it may be desirable to change to one with a different active ingredient.

Head lice are apparently on the increase. No wonder, then, as we search for information about an effective treatment, the Pharmacy Self Care fact card on head lice has become one of the most sought after.

The recently revised Head Lice fact card explains the various treatment options and how to get the best effect from the treatment you choose. The card is one

in the series available from all pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society’s health information.

Another good source of information is the Nitbusters website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/nitbusters/ Nitbusters is a joint project in NSW between the Health Department, the Department of Education and Training and the Federation of Parents & Citizens Associations. Nitbusters is aimed not so much at eradicating head lice, because there is no evidence that any one treatment will kill all lice and eggs, but more realistically at identifying and managing head lice.

Remember whatever head lice treatment you choose, a fine toothcomb is essential to get the nits out and a good hair conditioner will get rid of the knots.

If you find dead lice, the product has worked; but you will need to retreat in 7-10 days to catch the lice that have since emerged from newly hatched eggs. For per-sistent cases, discuss with your pharmacist whether you need to change the treatment to another with a different active ingredient; and consider a “Nitbuster” program at your school.

In any event, for the best advice about busting nits, call into the Lilydale Pharmacy and pick up the Head Lice fact card.

THE COMPUTER SWALLOWED GRANDMA The computer swallowed grandma. Yes, honestly it's true. She pressed 'control 'and 'enter' And disappeared from view. It devoured her completely, The thought just makes me squirm. Maybe she's caught a virus Or been eaten by a worm. I've searched through the recycle bin And files of every kind; I've even used the Internet, But nothing did I find. In desperation, I asked Jeeves My searches to refine. The reply from him was negative, Not a thing was found 'online'. So, if inside your 'Inbox,' My Grandma you should see, Please 'Copy', 'Scan' and 'Paste' her And e-mail back to me! --Author Unknown

Foundation in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government.

The program has been designed to assist clubs with the responsible management of alcohol and is the only nationwide program of its kind.

As a community based club involvement in this program is a way for the Club to promote a healthy and welcoming club culture whilst working to consistently meet obligations in regard to duty of care related to alcohol sales and consumption.

To become Good Sports Level 1, the Club will address a number of criteria including having responsible service of alcohol trained bar staff.

For more information about the Good Sports Accreditation Program contact Ian Chug or David Walsh.

Neighbourhood Watch

We still had a few regulars absent from this meeting and we hope that they will return to our meetings soon.

Our guest speaker for this meeting was Lynn Mitchell from the Launceston Municipal Ratepayers and Residents Association. This committee was formed in May 2002 and they have about 100 paying members. The annual joining fee is $5. The monthly meetings of this Group are popular times to meet others and to bring forward ideas to help solve issues that affect many of us as well as simply highlighting an issue that they have not been aware of and may be able to rectify. At the moment the Group is very concerned with the way in which the Launceston City Council is administering the new rates that were passed for 2005-2006. The Executive of this group meet personally with Council Management to discuss concerns and to keep up to date on events that are occurring.

Police Report On 13th January, a house was broken into and several expensive items were stolen. Value approx $9700. Launceston C.I.B are investigating.

Between 20th Jan and 23 Jan, some signs were stolen from a property in Second River Road. This has not been resolved as yet.

On 1st February, a service station in Lilydale reported a stealing. This has not been resolved.

There has been another report of a dog attack on a property while the owners were away. The dog concerned had to have its leg amputated.

The Lilydale Police Station is being updated and bringing it up to standard.

Lilydale Football Club

The football clubs New Years Eve disco was quite successful and committee will be hoping to build a bigger crowd next year. Thanks to Sharee and Mandy for their organisation. The Christmas raffle was won by Mike Elmer of Launceston. Thanks to all ticket sellers, especially Rob Patterson for his great effort selling tickets.

Thanks to Leigh Arnold and Leigh Bardenhagen for providing wood logs. Wood cutting has started with wood now available for sale at $70 trailer load. Enquiries at Patto’s. Nice to see Greg and Stevie Nutting in full training, helping out the committee members with wood cutting. It would be good to see more players take up your lead.

Practice now being held Tuesdays and Thursdays with good turn up, but would still like to see players from previous years return to our club. Neville has introduced more variety into the training and players are training well and really enjoying it. A practise match will be held at Lilydale against Rocherlea on Friday March 10th at 6 p.m. All interested players welcome, to be followed by a match against Uni-Mowbray on March 18th at 11 a.m.

An inter-club match will be played on Saturday 25 March, followed by a sporting games night made up of 4 teams of 20 players representing Lebrina, Bangor, Left side Lilydale Main Road, Right side Lilydale Main Road. Each team to consist of 10 men, 4 girls, 2 under 16’s, 2 under 13’s, 2 under 10’s.

This event could overshadow the Commonwealth Games as records could be broken and ego’s damaged as competitors fight for line honours for their area.

Some of the games will be – softball, golf, wheelbarrow races, 3 legged race, tug of war and a variety of other games to test the players ability and endurance. Every one welcome to come along to cheer on your team. Admission to ground will be free and the Kiosk and Bar will be open.

Under 10’s and Under 13’s to start training 7th March. Roster game starts 8th April at Lilydale – followed by Disco in Clubrooms.

Easter eggs are now for sale in many shops and last year and again this year, the Lilydale Post Office will have an unusual range of Easter gifts not seen anywhere else. They can be seen on our website www.gorgeousgifts.net.au or viewed at the Lilydale Post Office from mid March. Get in early, as last year many lines were sold out well before Easter.

Also printer cartridges are available. If you use a particular cartridge, just call into your local post office and we will check if it is available.

SEE YOU THERE!!!

We are very sorry to be losing our Secretary and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her very much for all that she has one for our Neighbourhood Watch group and wish her and Eric a safe and happy trip to their new home in Canada.

George Carlin's Views on Aging Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! . He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cy-cle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bed-time.

And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!! HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age,

weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay" them " .

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. " An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for

breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The

only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, what-ever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 Queen’s Baton The first Queen’s Baton was created for a relay to celebrate the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales. Since then the Queen’s Baton Relay has become a much loved Games tradition.

The baton’s journey symbolises the unity and shared ideals of the Commonwealth of Nations, and enables communities beyond the host city to share the Games celebrations. It also serves a functional purpose in carrying Her Majesty’s ‘message to the athletes’ from Buckingham Palace in London to the opening ceremony.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay is the world’s longest, most inclusive relay – travelling to all 71 nations of the Commonwealth in a year and a day. The design and technological features of the baton that will travel this epic journey reflect the relay’s efforts to showcase the diversity of the Commonwealth and unite its communities in celebration of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The elegant, curved form of the baton takes its inspiration from the physical form of athletes arching forward as they strive for success. The 71 larger lights on the front of the baton indicate the 71 nations of the Commonwealth that the Queen’s Baton will visit on its journey to the Games. These progressively light up as the baton arrives in each Commonwealth country, symbolising the gathering of the nations at the four-yearly festival of sport and culture.
