JULY AT SAINT AUGUSTINE'S

July 1 "Get Ready for Independence Day" Potluck Lunch Vacation Bible School

Path to Shine Bishop TuTu Desk Project

Craft Books Parish Finances

We begin July with a potluck lunch in celebration of freedom! Bring a dish to share on Sunday, July 1, at 12:15. Our Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 9-13. All kids from First Grade through Sixth Grade are invited to join in the fun. There is no fee, but registration is required. Reg-istration days are Saturday, June 23 and Saturday, June 30, from noon until 2 pm. Or con-tact JoAnn Blackstock. See the flyer in this newsletter for details. The Path to Shine after-school program will resume after the new school year begins. To learn more about PTS see the article "Why Support an After-School Program?". Archbishop Desmond TuTu has developed a project to provide desks for school children, and you are invited to participate. Each desk costs $20. See http://tutudesk.org for details. Make checks to St. Augustine's and note "TuTu Desks". Are you interested in crafts? A friend of Saint Augustine's is downsizing, and she has given us her collection of various craft books. They are displayed in the Gathering Room. Take some for yourself or for a friend who enjoys crafts. Finally, our 2018 finances are looking good! After six months our income is above budget, and our expenditures are below. The vestry has encouraged me to share this good news with you, and I am glad to do so. May the wisdom of God, the love of God, and the grace of God strengthen us to be Christ's hands and heart in this world.

Global Outreach “I was a barefoot township urchin. I went to school where there were no desks. We sat on benches and when the teacher asked us to

write, we knelt down on the floor and used the benches we had been sitting on as desks …. I wish Tutudesks had been available in

my day!” Archbishop, Desmond Tutu

Global Outreach (cont’d) Globally recognized, and in partnership with the United Nations Special Envoy for Education, the Tutudesk pro-vides the answer to the classroom desk shortage crisis experienced in schools in developing countries. Functional literacy – the ability to read and write – is almost impossible to achieve without a dedicated writing surface – a school desk. Over 95 million children in schools across sub-Saharan Africa have no access to a classroom desk and the prospect of compromised literacy development. Tutudesk offers children their very own workstation cre-ating immediate, high impact and positive change in an instant, under any learning conditions. Made from a robust child-friendly blend of polymers, Tutudesk is designed to last the duration of a learner’s school career. At $0.018 per day / over three years, Tutudesk is a unique and portable solution to our most disadvantaged children, offer-ing a sense of worth, dignity and ownership over and above the literacy and academic improvements. The Tutudesk Campaign aims to deliver at least 20 million Tutudesks to learners by 2025. With over 1,5 million desks already in the hands of children and more than 3,000 school handovers conducted, Tutudesk is a proven solution to a literacy development and general infrastructure crisis. Tutudesk directly addresses Donor requirements in the following ways: Sustainability (long product lifespan, international developing country relevance) Portability (for use at home and school) Low cost (fractional cost when compared to traditional furniture, incl. distribution, durability, functionality

etc.) Speed to market / Scalability Effectiveness and Relevance, relative to intended usage environment The Tutudesk Campaign operates with a set of goal-orientated solutions including: The provision of infrastructure to established, but under-resourced education systems The provision of infrastructure to areas experiencing overcrowded or stressed education structures The provision of portable infrastructure to children in nomadic or displaced environments The immediate provision of infrastructure to children in extraordinary circumstances, set on by conflict and

natural disaster, to assist in creating a safer environment Imprinting on the Tutudesk supports: Literacy and appropriate age education development Health, safety, equality and human rights education Environmental care information The desks are $20.00 each and will have an enormous impact on the lives of so many children. If you would like to contribute to this worthwhile endeavor, please make checks payable to St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church: memo-Tutu Desk. Source: http://tutudesk.org/
