“The most I ever paid for a polo pony was $4,500, now you couldn’t get on the field, it got too expensive, that’s why I quit, 1980s, they just started in Saratoga, Peter Brant had asked me to play. But it got too expensive, not only that, but Sunday racing cut into it too. I didn’t want an owner to come to the paddock and ask, ‘Where’s Allen?’ ‘He’s playing polo.’ Mr. Dreyfus used to say, ‘Go ahead and play, I’ll tell the jock what to do.’ My assistant Andy Descernio used to tell me ‘Go ahead and play, we’ll take care of it.’ Comanche was my favorite. I kept all of them. None of mine were race horses, they used to call them Ranch Thoroughbreds. I kept all of them until they died, one lived until he was 40, Apache, I went to Hobeau Farm and he was there.”

Charlton Baker just could not find a spot to bring back the some-times anxious and sometimes injured Moonlight Song in 2014.

Delayed initially in late winter and spring by a foot abscess, Baker even-tually found a spot and what a spot it was. The July 5 Belmont Sprint

Championship is a Grade 3 stakes – a holdover from its days as the James Marvin at Saratoga before it was moved downstate for 2014 – but it drew a Grade 1 quality field. The race played out as well as any open-com-

pany Grade 1 sprint stakes in recent years, in New York or anywhere, with Clearly Now setting a track record of 1:19.96 for 7 furlongs.

Moonlight Song didn’t disgrace himself while finishing in a dead-heat for fourth, beaten a neck for second, and 6 1/4 lengths behind the winner. Albert Fried Jr.’s homebred resurfaces in today’s $100,000 John Morrissey for New York-breds go-ing 6 1/2 furlongs. The race drew eight seasoned state-breds – six stakes winners – and Baker again sees it as a tough spot for Moonlight Song, with a twist.

“It’s a competitive race,” Baker said outside his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track Thursday morning. “It’s not a typical sprinter race because there’s a couple horses in there that usually go a little further. Saratoga Snacks is the horse to beat though, he’s a class horse. He’s been in sprint races before, too, and done well, so he looks like the one to beat.”

Moonlight Song is the 3-1 second choice in the Morrissey behind 5-2 favorite Big Business, second going 9 furlongs last time in the Evan Shipman at Saratoga July 31, and just ahead of the 7-2 Sarato-ga Snacks, a finalist for champion New York-bred older male last year who makes his first start for Bill Mott.

Moonlight Song makes just his 15th start in the Morrissey. The 7-year-old Unbridled’s Song gelding

has won six times, including the Gold and Roses Stakes for state-breds in mid-January at Aqueduct. He finished second to eventual Grade 1 winner and champion state-bred male sprinter Palace in the Hudson Handicap last fall at Belmont.

Baker hoped to keep Moonlight Song going after his win in the Gold and Roses, where he beat Palace

by 1 1/2 lengths on Aqueduct’s inner track, but foot issues dictated otherwise.

Moonlight Song stayed with Baker in New York throughout the winter as he overcame a foot abscess and trained well enough for the Jamaican-born trainer to give him a shot against graded company.

“Back off the layoff, that was a tough spot,” Baker said. “Especially going seven-eighths off the layoff. That’s not an ideal place to go. I wasn’t re-ally planning on going in that race, I wanted an easier spot, but we couldn’t find one. He was doing good enough so we took a shot there. He ran great. A super race.

Baker said Moonlight Song might even be doing better coming into the Morrissey than he did the Belmont Sprint. He showed it with a strong 5-fur-long workout in a bullet :59.90 over the main track last Monday and another half-mile in :49.02 Mon-day.

Moonlight Song won last year at Saratoga, tak-ing a 7-furlong open-company allowance midway through the meet. He was the 2-1 favorite that day, but Baker was surprised the gelding out of the Capote mare Moonlightandbeauty got the job done.

“I was not confident when he came in the pad-dock he was so washed out,” Baker said. “He was totally washed out. We had to take him to the hose and get him cleaned up. After that I was like, ‘man, he lost his race.’ But he still won it. He’s always that kind of horse, one that might get a little nervous and wash out. He’s been like that since Day 1. This

year starting off he’s been OK though. “I’ve schooled him a bunch of times and he’s

been pretty good schooling. The more mature he gets the better he gets as far as that is concerned.”

Phil Serpe hopes the recent stretch of cooler weather works in Weekend Hideaway’s favor.

The 4-year-old son of Speightstown, the 6-1 fourth choice for the Morrissey, has run well on the main track at Saratoga and Serpe is glad it isn’t too warm for the chestnut colt.

“His works have been good, the horse looks good (and) I’m very satisfied,” Serpe said. “I like the fact that the weather is a little cooler because he doesn’t love the extreme hot weather.”

Owned by Red and Black Stable, Weekend Hide-away exits a pretty strong allowance race, where he beat Morrissey entrants West Hills Giant and Am-berjack, July 11 at Belmont.

“He’s very consistent; mostly his dirt races from 6 furlongs to 7 furlongs,” Serpe said. “He ran a couple races back at a mile and I think that was stretching it a little bit for him. He’s right where he needs to be. Six, six-and-a-half, seven-eighths, that’s right where he needs to be.

“He’s a very durable horse and he gives it to you

just about every time. If you look at his record he has five wins in 15 starts with three seconds and three thirds. That’s not bad.”

Amberjack is equally consistent, winning four of eight starts with a second and two thirds for Peachtree Stable. Trained since early 2013 by Mike Hushion, the 4-year-old Indygo Shiner colt won last year’s Mike Lee and New York Derby and finished second in the Albany going 9 furlongs at Saratoga.

Amberjack was third in that July 11 allowance, finishing 2 lengths behind Weekend Hideaway and a half-length behind West Hills Giant, off nearly a year layoff.

“He was the third best horse in the race,” Hush-ion said. “He was coming off a layoff and I’m sure this last race will help him along. He’s trained bet-ter so I expect him to run better. We’re thinking we got a better horse than last time going into the race. That’s the main thing.”

Saratoga Snacks, transferred from Gary Sciacca to Mott by owner Bill Parcells’ August Dawn Farm, also returns off a lengthy layoff. He finished second behind eventual graded stakes winner Zivo in the Whodam Stakes Jan. 19 at Aqueduct and hasn’t surfaced until now.

The 5-year-old Tale of the Cat ridgling finished third after a rough trip in last year’s Morrissey, beaten 1 3/4 lengths by the ill-fated Saginaw, and came back a little less than two months later to win the Empire Classic on New York Showcase Day.

Brigand is yet another coming off a layoff. The 5-year-old son of Flatter finished well up the track when seventh in the Move It Now in mid-November at Aqueduct and has been off since. Trained by Bob Baffert, Brigand won an allowance/optional race at Saratoga in 2012 and was fourth in an open-com-pany allowance/optional here last summer.

Quick Money makes his third start for Michelle Nevin after he was claimed for $30,000 in April. He raced five days apart in his first two starts for Nevin, both in allowance/optional races at Bel-mont, finishing second going 7 furlongs June 7 and winning by a nose going 6 1/2 furlongs June 12.

Thirty-two locales across the coun-try host NFL training camps this sum-mer, from Oxnard, Calif., to Tampa, Fla. Helmets collide, whistles blow, coaches scream.

Bill Parcells has been there. He’s done that. In fact, he did it better than just about as well as any football coach ever has, leading the New York Giants to two Super Bowl champion-ships and taking three other teams to the playoffs during his Hall of Fame career.

These days, Saratoga Springs is where Parcells wants to spend his Au-gust mornings, afternoons and nights, especially considering how difficult it once was for him to make it here during the racing season.

“Actually, I usually tried to make the meet for one or two days. If the

meet started on time I could get one or two days here before I went to camp,” the Hall of Fame coach said as he surveyed the Oklahoma training track from his golf cart, sitting along-side trainer and friend Gary Sciacca. “I remember doing that when I was in Dallas a couple of times.”

Where did Parcells go to catch a plane from the Spa out to Cowboys camp?

“Well, we had (Dallas Cowboys’ owner) Jerry Jones’s plane. That made it a little easier.”

Of course it did. While the coach no longer dictates the day-to-day workings of an NFL team, in Sarato-ga he’s got business to tend.

Parcells owns three horses in train-ing at Saratoga. The most notable is Saratoga Snacks, a multiple stakes winner entered in today’s $100,000

John Morrissey Stakes for New York-breds. Parcells’ horses race in the name of his August Dawn Farm. Fa-mous for his eye as a talent evaluator in football, he says he defers to Sciac-ca or Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott when it comes to his horses.

“I don’t know anything,” Parcells said, probably not giving himself enough credit. “I have to rely on other people.”

workouts one reminder of his coach-ing career is a sweatshirt bearing the NFL Players Association logo. He seems utterly content to stay put, to head out to the races about four times a week and to play golf again once he recovers from minor shoulder surgery. He built a house here about eight years ago because of what the area offers.

“Saratoga is a very happy place for me,” he said. “While I’m here I’m very happy. I like the town’s atmo-sphere, and I like the size of the town. I grew up in a pretty big city. I like just being around the horses, and there’s tremendous interest in that particu-lar venue in the community. It’s just a place that I enjoy being.”

Parcells has his favorite restaurants in town, Forno Bistro, The Wishing Well and Winslow’s among them. He and Sciacca laugh when he mentions the last one. Apparently they enjoy putting away prodigious amounts of a certain food at Winslow’s.

“When they hear Gary’s come to town the turkey population vacates New York,” Parcells said. “I like that, too.”

Before frequenting his favorite eateries at night and after watching workouts in the morning, Parcells can usually be found at the track watch-ing the races from his owner’s box. He does bet, though not always, and not when his own horses are running.

“If we win the race we win plenty of money,” he said.

On a recent morning, none of his horses are going so he held a sheet full of entrants to see who the favorites were, who had horses running and if he was familiar with any of them.

You get the sense he loves the rou-tine, the competition, the distinct feel of racing. If he misses coaching it doesn’t show, though Parcells does admit he has a deeper affinity for one of his former employers than the oth-ers.

“I’m a Giant at heart,” he said. He’s also a horseman at heart, and

while Saratoga is a long way from training camp, it doesn’t mean Par-cells would rather be there. Like he said, Saratoga is where Parcells is happy.

The trainer of the winner – and the second-place finisher for that mat-ter – was nowhere to be found in the immediate minutes after Thursday’s $100,000 Saratoga Dew Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

Was this a rewind to 2013 and 2012, when Allen Jerkens made his trademark late arrival to the winner’s circle after winning the Saratoga Dew with Go Unbridled?

Not exactly, but close. Mitch Friedman, like Jerkens, has

a favorite spot to watch races and he’s frequently late to the winner’s circle if he makes it at all. He made it Thurs-day, better late than never, and got a little ribbing from fellow trainer Da-vid Donk.

“Mitchy, you look like Allen Jerk-

ens,” joked Donk, who was third behind the Friedman-trained and Richard Greeley-owned entry of Car-ameaway and Dreaming of Cara with Got Gorgeous.

Friedman made the picture, too, after the Saratoga Dew unfolded just the way he pictured and predicted for his entry that came into the race off performances that were better than they looked on paper.

Carameaway, eighth behind La Verdad in the 1-mile Critical Eye at Belmont Park May 31, tracked the early pace of Easy Living, took over on the turn and drew off to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Dreaming of Cara fin-ished a clear second, her race coming 10 days after finishing last of nine in

a 1-mile turf allowance at Saratoga. “The last time she ran she ran a

subpar race, but she was sick,” Fried-man said of Carameaway. “She came out of the race sick and we gave her the time to get better. She’s trained forwardly. She worked in :46.”

Carameaway’s fast half-mile work-out was in :46.82, second fastest of 73 at the distance July 6 at Belmont before Friedman shipped her to Sara-

toga. Once she got to Saratoga, the 4-year-old Lawyer Ron filly thrived, nothing out of the ordinary according to her trainer.

“Every horse does good when they come up here,” said Friedman, whose experience dates back to the early 1980s working for Johnny Campo. “No horses do bad.

When your horse needs help...

“After she came up here after being sick she just blossomed. Her coat started being bright red, she started eating everything and when you see a horse do that, and they all do that up here, you know you’re coming over here with confidence when you do that.”

Bettors were confident that Tahoe Tigress was the one for the Saratoga Dew, hammering her down to 9-10 in the field of seven. Easy Living, a 3-year-old Big Brown filly making her stakes debut with two wins in four starts, was the second choice at nearly 3-1 while Friedman’s two-for-one entry was 9-2.

Easy Living and Joel Rosario dictated the terms as expected from the start, taking the field through decent early fractions of :24:21 and :48.34. Fried-man, watching from his spot near the picnic area, and Greeley, watching from upstairs, liked what they saw as Carameaway tracked that pace with a motionless Rajiv Maragh keeping close tabs on the leader.

“Mitch called the race,” Greeley said. “He said we’ve got to break, we’ve got to sit behind the speed, tuck her in behind and if she steals a half in :48, around that turn he’s going to send her and they aren’t catching us.”

Maragh followed instructions and the signals Carameaway was sending him quickly went by Easy Living and opened up. They were ahead by a

half-length through 6 furlongs in 1:12.81 and were 3 lengths clear past the furlong grounds. She got a little leg weary in deep stretch but it was all over, the only serious threat her stablemate and Cornelio Velasquez. Get Gorgous, making her stakes debut as an 8-year-old, finished third, 1 3/4 lengths be-

hind Dreaming of CaraCarameaway, a homebred out of the Grand

Slam mare Adorable You, and Dreaming of Cara, a daughter of North Light who cost $32,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale, are both named after Greeley’s wife.

“Caramea is my wife, so they’re both named af-ter my wife,” Greeley said. “I actually have another one of over there, too. And my wife is actually a red head so it was nice that the chestnut came first.”

Friedman was thrilled to serve up the one-two finish for Greeley.

“I’m glad for the owner,” he said. “He’s put a lot of money into this business. He’s a loyal breeder and a loyal owner. He deserves it. Good guy.”

The Saratoga Dew capped a pretty good run of late for Greeley, a run that could have been even better.

Hidden Brook consigned Greeley’s half-brother to Carameaway that sold for $150,000 during the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred yearling sale last Saturday. Purchased by Mike Ryan, agent, the colt is by Include and undoubtedly would have brought more if the sale had been a week later (or the Saratoga Dew a week sooner).

“I’m kicking myself because I sold her half-broth-er for $150,000,” Greeley said. “I’m kicking myself because he could have brought more. He’s by In-clude and now that (Carameaway won the Sara-toga Dew), he could have brought more. So let’s just say the guy that bought him is going to be very happy.”

By Tiznow out of graded stakes winner Aunt Henny, Schoodic was supposed to be something good. The bay horse with a wide blaze, coal black mane and tail and white front legs. Looks the part too. But he couldn’t outrun Mr. Ed.

At 2, Schoodic lost his debut by 33 lengths in the slop at Saratoga. He fin-ished third in his second start, but lost by 17 lengths. The theme continued through three more races – one more as a juvenile and two at 3 for trainer Michael Matz.

Then owner/breeder Edie Dixon called her steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher. And Schoodic took wing. He won his first two starts last fall to claim the 3-year-old championship and made it three in a row with a win to start 2014. Thursday, he came full circle – winning the $75,000 M.G.

Walsh Memorial novice stakes at Saratoga two years and three days since that miserable racing debut.

“When I got him, his hind end was much higher than his front end,” said Fisher. “He was just very immature. He’s a better horse now, a much bet-ter horse. He’d be a good flat horse now too.”

Not that Fisher or Dixon want to find out.

Three weeks after getting bumped out of the race and pulling up here, the Kentucky-bred overcame a goofy, head-throwing, crow-hopping start to win by 4 widening lengths in 4:40.77 for 2 3/8 miles as the second choice. Favorite Address Unknown finished second after taking the lead on the fi-

nal turn with Bluegrass Summer third.“He’s being a big baby here,” Fish-

er said while watching a replay of the start. “He’s jumping up and down. I don’t know what that was about.”

Ridden by Paddy Young – who won for the third time in six rides at the meet – Schoodic settled down but was last of nine for the first two fenc-es as Fisher trainee Easy Reach took the early lead. Young moved Schoodic

up into the race after the second fence and he was wide around the second of five turns. Schoodic advanced to fourth, outside horses, down the backside and around the third turn. With a lap to go on the inner turf, Easy Reach led Address Unknown by a length with Top Striker third on the inside. Schoodic was fourth in behind

RACE 1: On a fairly difficult card, we’ll sink our molars into this maiden route on the lawn. #4 LADY BLING ( also entered on Thursday ) has an excellent rating for her first time start, grass, and even slop, need be. I rad one of the better turf riders around, and there are no “Cozzene’s” in this field. Yo quiero #8 TACOBELLA for 2nd. This Finger Lakes invader will never find a softer spot for her turf debut, and has decent breed-ing for it as well. Lecesse doubles his batting average with 2nd time starters, as well. #3 MOMMA GIOVANNA as good as any to close out the deal. BEATABLE FAVORITE : #6 TEN PENNY PRINCESS beat one home @ 5-2 in debut, and while an improvement is always possible, we’ll pass at those odds here. OFF TURF : 4-3-6-8-2

and probably right where Young wanted to be.“He was quirky down at the start,” said Young.

“He gets all bouncy when we went to jump off and started like propping. I couldn’t get him to go for-ward. There’s no point in panicking – Plan B. I was further back than anybody wanted, but they didn’t go that quick so I was able to get into the race with-out being under any pressure. Take a deep breath, reassess and go from there.”

Address Unknown went to Easy Reach at the first fence down the back, but Schoodic loomed like a deadline going into the final turn. Behind him, Bluegrass Summer came off the cones for room and Fog Island circled. The favorite led into the stretch, but offered little as Schoodic cleared and won for fun with a long, easy gallop-out as an exclamation point. Young never used his whip for more than a prop.

“This horse doesn’t even know what he’s doing out there, he’s still a big backward baby,” Young said. “My God he’s got some gears when you go for him. I’ve never felt that from him before in the three times I’ve ridden him, but today that was like a power boost. It was brilliant. That’s the difference between an OK horse and a very good horse.”

– Joe Clancy

• Imagining didn’t run until he was 3, didn’t win an allowance race until he was 4 (despite a Grade

1 placing) and didn’t win a stakes until he was 5. This spring, he won a Grade 1 as a 6-year-old and he’s one of the players in Saturday’s Grade 1 Sword Dancer on the Saratoga turf.

So give his little sister some time.“She was an early 2-year-old and I really liked

her, but she never really improved,” trainer Shug McGaughey said of Sabbatical, who won Thurs-day’s third race. “Imagining was late getting going so maybe that’s them. I think her future could be in front of her. I was pleased with what I saw, she’s long on the grass.”

She was Thursday, rating behind the leaders in

an $85,000 allowance going 1 3/8 miles on the in-ner turf. The 3-year-old filly listened to Javier Cas-tellano while Princess Mara went through splits of :24.66, :50.31 and 1:16.28 on the good turf and waited again when Glorious Chant cut the final corner and took a brief lead. Coming off the rail, Sabbatical went after the leaders, traded bumps with Silky in mid-stretch and drew off to win by 2 1/4 lengths in 2:17.97. Silky got up for second, a head in front of Princess Mara. A claim of foul by Irad Ortiz Jr., aboard the runner-up, was disal-lowed. Silky gave as good as she got and Sabbatical actually took the worst of a bump on her inside hip.

“She got to lugging in a little bit, but she was a pretty easy winner,” said McGaughey, who listened to Castellano’s explanation and confidently waited out the decision.

The winner, by Medaglia d’Oro out of the A.P. Indy mare Daydreaming, finished sixth in her debut here last summer and made two other starts at Bel-mont (seventh and fifth). After a winter break, she got to work in Florida and impressed her trainer. He wasn’t thinking of running her at Keeneland in the spring, but she trained so well he had no choice. On the Polytrack in April, she blitzed from 10th to first by 4 1/2 lengths in a 7-furlong maiden race. At Belmont in June, Sabbatical finished fourth on the dirt.

Then came Saratoga.“She got up here and she got to really training

good,” said McGaughey. “She’s really starting to get a look about her now. She’s a little lighter than

No Obstacles

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Everyone’s heard that one and it held true for Bar of Gold in the fifth race Thursday at Saratoga Race Course.

The Medaglia d’Oro filly bobbled at the start and was spooked through the opening quarter-mile before jock-ey Junior Alvarado righted her first on the outside and then on the rail to win the 5 1/2-furlong state-bred maiden.

“She broke slow and was very wide to start with,” Alvarado said. “I tried to take off with her a little bit and as soon as she got hit by the dirt it was like she was seeing ghosts around the track. She was all scared, so I put her in the clear again, probably 8 or 9 wide in the clear so she could get confidence back again.”

Bar of Gold came up the inside to pass The Lewis Dinner and then held off Irish Heroine to win by three quarters of a length. The move on the inside surprised trainer John Kimmel, who trains the filly for her breeders Chester and Mary Broman.

“Most 2-year-olds, you break slow, get hung wide, and kind of get bounced around never show much,” he said. “It’s a tough way to start your debut and take a lot of dirt in your face. Then for her to come back and come between horses on the rail, most horses with a lack of experience just can’t do that.”

Bar of Gold is the first foal out of the Grade 3-winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Khancord Kid, who was bred and campaigned by the Bromans and trained by Kimmel. Khancord Kid won three of 10 starts, including the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes in 2010 at Gulfstream and was fourth in that year’s Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga.

WININ WESTVIRGINIA

I might like her, but she trained good, she acted good. Today I thought she warmed up pretty well and he looked like he was loaded the whole race.”

McGaughey and owner/breeder Phipps Stable might be loaded for more than Thursday.

“The good thing about it is they don’t make you rush them,” Mc-Gaughey said. “I can give her time and maybe next year she can com-pete in some of the longer filly stakes. Obviously, we’d like to do something this year, there are some races for her. We’ll see.”

– Joe Clancy

• Trainer Bruce Levine started the fifth week of the Saratoga meet with three wins and doubled that total by Thursday afternoon.

Levine won a race Wednesday and went 2-for-2 Thursday, taking the seventh with Al’s Gal and the ninth with Distorted Beauty.

Al’s Gal finished strongly in the closing strides to win her 1-mile race on the inner turf for $40,000 claim-ers. Irad Ortiz Jr. rode the daughter of

English Channel, who hadn’t been out since Levine claimed her for $40,000 in late June at Belmont.

“I had to wait for this race because she wasn’t out of jail for the same condition yet,” Levine said. “She looked like she was worth the money. You know, she’s only a 3-year-old. It looked like there was some upside, if

nothing else.” She won by 6 1/2 lengths in

1:37:55.“She really exploded,” Levine said.

“She surprised me a little bit. But the turf is soft, sometimes they like the give and sometimes they don’t, and she seemed to like the give, so it worked out well.”

Stablemate Distorted Beauty fol-lowed suit in the ninth, a 1-mile al-lowance/optional for state-breds. Jose Ortiz rode the 3-year-old daughter of Invasor, keeping her wide around the far turn and passing One Time Only inside the final sixteenth.

“He rode a good race,” Levine said. “I told him to target (One Time Only) because I thought she was the horse we had to beat. So he was kind of following her, when she moved we moved, and then we eventually out ran her down the lane.”

Levine won Wednesday’s fourth race with Amulay and his six wins move him into a six-way tie for sev-enth in the trainer standings.

“It feels nice,” Levine said of the day. “One’s nice, two’s greater.”

– Ashley Dingeman

• Jockey Javier Castellano walked into the winner’s circle on Storm Pur-suit after the eighth race, the Stormy Atlantic gelding’s connections cheered and meet’s leading rider flashed a wide grin.

Why not? Castellano’s successful trip in the 6-furlong claiming race was his 40th victory of the meet, fur-ther extending an already comfort-

able lead over second-place Irad Ortiz Jr. that now stands at 15 wins.

Trainer Bruce Brown knows his horses are in good hands when Cas-tellano is up.

“He’s the best,” Brown said. “This is a very good jockey colony up here, and for him to be pulling away in the standings just shows that he can ride turf, dirt, long, short. He’s head and shoulders the best rider in the country right now without a doubt.”

Castellano remained bashful, say-ing it was Storm Pursuit that deserved kudos for getting a nose in front at the wire.

“I’m very satisfied with the way he did it,” Castellano said. “I’m very im-pressed. He took it to the lead and he held on all the way to the wire. We went fast. I give all the credit to the horse because most horses, in the last part of the race they get tired. He nev-er did. He never gave up.”

The win extended Brown’s success-ful run and was his seventh win of the meet.

“Pinch myself,” he said. “This is a good place to do good at. It’s a tough place to do good at.”

– Dan McDonough

• Bug Juice emerged victorious from a wild scrum at the finish of the finale, besting four challenges in a side-by-sprint to the wire at the end of the 6-furlong starter allowance.

“I’m still trying to figure it out,” winning trainer Steve Klesaris said. “I thought we had lost quite a bit of ground at the top of the lane. They were spread across the track. I couldn’t believe he got up there in the end.”

Klesaris shared his disbelief after-ward with jockey Joel Rosario, who somehow got the 6-year-old son of Mingun ahead by a neck. The first five were separated by just 1 ¼ lengths and Bug Juice won for the 14th time in 36 career starts.

“He’s a warrior-type horse,” Kle-saris said. “He’s a tough customer. He likes the game. He knows the game. He knows how to win. He’s won a third of his starts. You’ve got to re-spect a horse like that.”

30 Friday, August 15, 2014The Saratoga Special

“Where’s your office this year?” 112 Spring Street. Across from Spring Street

Deli. Carpet. Conference rooms. Kitchen. A reno-vated school, it has charm, efficiency and comfort. We are back in Patrick the Mailman’s territory for the first time in years. Did I mention it’s across the street from Spring Street Deli?

It is by far the best office in the 14-year history of The Saratoga Special. After 14 years of renting and bartering office space from one end of town to the other, that’s like being voted the best manure pit on the backside.

In 2001, our first year, we rented a space in the Palio Building at the other end of Broadway. Cool building, easy access for decompression walks in Congress Park. A fitness center before a newspaper office, it had walls of mirrors, a shower and no fur-niture. We were trying to sell The Special. After a week, we had furniture, stacking up leftover news-papers like they were Legos. I hung my sport coat on the chin up bar and slept under my desk.

The next year we rented an office in the Arcade Building, after a recommendation from our friends at Lyrical Ballad. Cool location, on Broadway. Big glass windows across the front, felt like we were in an aquarium but it was at least professional. The office was tight, like a bingo hall. The parking was tighter, sliding into the back alley. Quint Kessenich bounded into the office the day before Opening Day. A former All-American lacrosse goalie, he had emailed me weeks before. I told him to show up. He showed up – and saved the day, spending more time on the beat than in the office, which was handy because he didn’t have a desk.

Not sure if it was the next year, but we moved up town to the Chamber of Commerce building. It was better, more room, professional, spacious parking lot but we learned that crossing Broadway after 6 was like crossing the Gaza Strip. We ate meals from

the Getty next door. Somewhere along the line, we decided we could

save money by renting one place for an office and a place for the staff to live. What a mistake. We rented a house, for sale, on the other side of Lake and put Jim Mulvihill, John Lies, Jamie Santo and his bulldog Floyd upstairs and the office downstairs. A bat flew into one of the bedrooms so one of them (I think it was Lies) shut the door and moved to another room. We hung sheets in the windows and poached wireless Internet off the neighbors who fig-ured it out and were cool, “We’re glad you are just writing a newspaper, we were worried you were the CIA.” The real estate agent tried to show the house – once.

After that fiasco, we tried the dual-purpose ar-rangement again, renting a back condo off of Union Avenue. It was being renovated so we set up our tables, like Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving and went to work. Travis Stone lived in a room next to the office, did a radio show from a closet and Santo lived upstairs. Yes, Floyd came along too. Great lo-cation, we had porch parties on Sunday nights and drove the golf cart up and down the back alley to the track.

The house near Five Points. The nadir of our real estate moves in Saratoga. We rented a newly reno-vated house, it was cheap, and put the staff upstairs and office downstairs. “It’s so well insulated, you don’t need air conditioning.” That lasted about an hour. The landlord, new to the rental business, came to the house with air conditioners and asked for our help. First he grabbed a beer out of the fridge (he hadn’t cleaned out his food) and sat down at the kitchen table. Then he proceeded to drop the air conditioner out the window. We laughed until he got mad. Katherine smashed Dave’s car in the drive-way and Floyd made another trip to Saratoga, he got meaner each year. It was the last time we shared

a house and office. After that fiasco (seeing a trend?), we split the

house and office and spent a couple of years on Broadway, trading advertising for space. One year, we walked past bums on the back stairs, another year we walked through a yoga studio to get to our office, another year we were joined each night by a bagpiper (I never knew how much I hated the bagpipes). Last year, in a bind, we wound up in a partially renovated building (they say life comes full circle) with construction paper as carpet. Like living with your parents after college, clients would ask to meet in our office and we would run out the door to meet them on Broadway.

This year, it’s like we’ve finally made it. No bums. No bats. No Floyd.
