Pastor’s Letter June 28/29 Dear Parish Family, This weekend we join with everyone at Human Resources of the Hamptons in congratulating Mary Ann Tupper as she celebrates retirement after more than 20 years of service here in the town of Southampton. We also welcome Kerry Lewendoski as the new director of HRH. Kerry has been working alongside Mary Ann for the past year, learning all of the programs in depth and preparing to assume the role of director. Mary Ann began her work among the needy as a volunteer here at Sacred Hearts back in 1993. The organization was redefined in 1999 as part of a close collaboration of community members and local churches. Their many programs include a food pantry, thrift store, Lunch Box Kids, the Christmas giving tree, and, of course, The Polar Bear Plunge! In 2011, Mary Ann was named Person of the Year here in Southampton. Mary Ann will be succeeded by Kerry Lewendoski. Kerry is a lifelong resident of Southampton and a parishioner here at Sacred Hearts. I know she is looking forward, together with myself, the other pastors and community leaders, as we care for the neediest residents of our town. Please join me in extending to Mary Ann our best wishes and gratitude for a life of love, faith, and devotion. We wish you every blessing as you begin these wonderful years of retirement. And let us join together, too, in welcoming Kerry to this very important ministry in our community. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

In Sympathy Filomena Rossi Marciw Filomena passed to eternal life on June 14, 2014, at 93 years of age. She was one of the creators of our banners at Sacred Hearts, an avid golfer, a terrific poet, and fantastic cook among other things. Filomena especially loved her grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at 10 AM at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Basilica. Our sympathies go out to her husband, Steve, daughters, Marianne, Nancy and her husband, Richard, Elizabeth and her husband Bob, grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Erin, and Peter, family and friends.

Mary Harriss Galvin Mary passed to eternal life on June 24, 2014, at 91 years of age. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Basilica of Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 10:30 AM, by Father William Galvin. She loved politics, a conspiratist she always had a theory. Mary loved poetry and was a poet herself for family, friends and special events. She was a friend to many who will miss her kind, pure heart, her unconventional point of view and her commitment to her faith. Our sympathies go out to her children, Abbeline Wyman, John F. Galvin IV, Maria Galvin and Robert Harriss Galvin as well as her grandchildren, Nickolas, Victoria, Andrew and Maise, family and friends.

Once again we hear Jesus’ challenging question, “Who do you say that I am?” We know Peter’s answer, but who do we say Jesus is? Some would have us believe that he is the one who tells us some people are worthy and others unworthy of health care or jobs or education or…. Some would have us believe that he is the one who instructs us about who is entitled to this land or water or food or energy and who has no such rights. Some would have us believe that Jesus has designated whom we may attack and kill and whom we should protect. Some simply justify their own opinions and behaviors by insisting that they are on the side of Jesus. But who does the Gospel tell us Jesus is? That he is Love incarnate. That he is Mercy incarnate. That he is Compassion incarnate. Who do you say that Jesus is?

Life Corner :: SHJM Respect Life Ministry Did you know... Norma McCorvey, who went by the legal pseudonym Jane Roe, was the plaintiff in the

landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision; she has had two children, and never had an abortion; she was

received into the Catholic Church in the 1990's, and works actively as an advocate for ProLife. In 2005, she

petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, on the basis that abortion

is harmful to women -- the petition was turned down.

Santos Pedro y Pablo, Apóstoles, Año ABC. Ilustración © 2007 M. Erspamer. Printed from www.

By María Dolores Martínez, from Liturgia y Canción 2003 © 2003, OCP. All rights reserved.
