Every Friday afternoon, Reception to Year 2 and Year 3 to Year 6 meet in the hall and children are split into workshops that they have signed up to at the start of the term. There are currently 19 workshops running and these are led by teachers or support staff. The sessions are planned in advance and skills to be covered are identified. These skills are assessed at the start of the term and then again at the end of the term in order to track progress. At the end of the term, children are awarded with a diploma in their chosen subject. !After School Clubs !After school clubs run from 3.15pm – 4.15pm everyday after school, these are run predominantly by support staff and one outside agency. There are currently 21 different clubs and they offer spaces to children from Reception to Year 6. Children sign up at the start of a term and pay £25.00 for 12 weeks. The skills to be covered in the clubs are identified in advance. These skills are assessed at the start of the term and then again at the end of the term in order to track progress. Children also complete an evaluation form at the end of the 12 weeks to say what they have learnt, what they have enjoyed and how they can apply those skills in other areas. We have also entered into football matches with the Melcombe Football Team for both boys and girls. We are also looking into entering a competition with a Tag Rugby team next academic year. !KS1 Clubs Summer Term 2014 !CLUB DAY & TIME COST VENUE LEADER

Parent Support Workshops !This term we have provided Steps and Blocks Workshops for parents of children in Reception to Year 5. These were held to support parents in helping their children at home to develop reading and mental maths skills. We will also be running a transition workshop for parents of children in Reception, specifically focussing on the phonics used in Year One, in preparation for the phonics testing that the children will undertake next year. !Summer Fair !There is a very small group of parents loosely involved in the setting up of the Summer Fair this year. It has predominantly been organized by myself and 3 support staff. This needs to be addressed next year in order to give parents more ownership. We have kept several contacts from last year including the local press, The Fire Brigade and Fulham FC and we have gained even more, so the fair looks to be bigger and better than before. We are also using the money from last years Fair to purchase the necessary equipment (such as BBQs and gazebos) so that we have our own set of resources rather than borrowing from other local schools. The fair will be held on 12th July 12-3pm 2014 !Incidents of Discrimination !

School Development Plan 2013-2014 !Our Aim: To motivate, challenge and inspire the children, so that they are actively involved in their learning, see the value and purpose of their learning and have a strong sense of belief, that they can and will be successful learners. We want success for all! !New Curriculum by Natasha Myrtil !Staff have continued to plan lessons around the new curriculum in order to be prepared for the new curriculum starting in September 2014 using timetables set up by Ms Myrtil before she left for Maternity Leave.!!Community Links by Wayne Leeming and Jenny Cox !The school participated in an INSET session at Fulham Palace and several classes have now visited to undertake a range of activities. The facility offers a wide range of courses for all primary ages. This is a good local link, as there is a wealth of historical / geographical information here and classes can walk there.!!Volunteers from Beanstalk and CAA continue to support our less able readers.!!The work of Denny Mareschal from Birbeck College is to be commended as he has taught 6 children in year 6 throughout the spring and summer term in the hope of achieving level 6 in mathematics.!!Attendance by Carol Campbell !Summer Term 1!!For those families whose children returned late after Easter, warning letters were sent out and their absences were unauthorized.!!There were a large number of absences on the Friday following polling day Polling Day on Thursday 22nd May, just before the half term break.!!Summer Term 2!!Two children took a holiday mid-term and have been referred for a fine.!!Two children have been referred to Localities due to poor attendance.!One Year Six child has been referred for poor attendance for support in transition to high school.!!In the case of other absences, all documentation has been provided to support their absence.!!Thanks to Phoebe’s empathy and tenacity, and to teaching staff who are fostering a greater awareness by children and their parents, we are currently on track for over 95% for the second year running. Next steps: 96%!!!Melcombe Primary School. Head Teachers Report to the Governors. Summer 2014 Pg 17

!Teaching and Learning by Wayne Leeming !In the Summer term all staff were monitored by the Senior Leadership team for the third time this academic year. The results showed that all teaching staff were either “good” or “outstanding”. All teaching staff received targets which are intended to help them improve their teaching and which will be used for future observations.!!Ms Jenny Cox and Ms Roz Hemingway monitored all support staff this term.!!Literacy and Numeracy Book Looks were scheduled for the end of the Summer Term.!!Continued Professional Development by Wayne Leeming !Teachers and support staff continue to receive training in areas identified as being either useful or necessary to ensure the smooth running and improvement of the school.!!At the end of the Spring term all staff received a one-day training on the school’s teaching and learning model. This was delivered by Ms Janet Moffat and was intended to refresh some staff’s ideas and to introduce the model to other staff.!!At the beginning of the Summer term the staff attended a training at the Fulham Palace which was intended to give all staff an idea of the facilities available at the palace and encourage them to use these in delivering the new curriculum.!!Eight members of staff went on external courses ranging from Music to Visual Impairment courses.!!Middle Leader Programme by Fiona Tyler !During this term the middle leaders have been given the opportunity to update and evaluate action plans as well as preparing new targets for the new school year.  There has been time given to look at resources to ensure that the school is prepared for the introduction of the new curriculum.!!The music leader gave an inset on the new music curriculum, which she has spent lots of time making and developing flipcharts for Autumn term for each year group to use.  She introduced the new skills map and what the expectations and outcomes are for each year.  This was also an opportunity for her to share what she learnt on the courses she had attended.!!Middle leaders have again been given the opportunity to pair up but this time with someone in the opposite key stage, in order to observe their subject and to celebrate achievements made.  This as been beneficial for new middle leaders as they see the progression with a fresh pair of eyes and can see where developments need to be made for the new school year.!!Literacy and Numeracy books will take place within the upcoming week to ensure marking and assessment practices are consistent throughout the school.  This is also to see the progression that has been made within these areas and key stages.!!Melcombe Primary School. Finally, in order to continue with a strong team of middle leaders next school year there will need to be opportunities for them to meet as a group so that new middle leaders can understand their roles clearly and have the resources to do this, for example, red files, book look organisation, observations of their subject and peer observations.!!Pupil Premium by Roz Hemingway !Following analysis of all children’s assessment tests done at the end of the Spring term 2, groups that had been supported were reorganised for the summer term according to need. This meant that some Pupil Premium staff were allocated to different year groups and children. Year three received no support during the first two terms but requested it be put in place for the summer term. Consequently one member of the team now works an additional six hours per week to facilitate this, which has been very successful. As results of testing for the summer term are not yet completed, I am unable to provide an indication of how each of the supported groups have done. However, this will be included in the next report.! !Pupil Premium staff are in the process of being monitored at present, with very pleasing results as their skilled intervention enables the children to be successful, gain confidence in their own ability and work more independently.!!Tracking of supported Pupil Premium children has been trialled and staff involved in this, have found it manageable and informative so next year all Pupil Premium staff will do this.!!Next year, I would like to ensure all Pupil Premium staff meet more regularly to discuss progress, sort out any issues and have the opportunity to be involved in the smooth running of support as a whole. This year, possibly due to me only working three days a week, we have not held meetings regularly, but solved any issues on an individual basis which is very time consuming.!!Overall, Pupil Premium support is successful and ensures children don’t become over-reliant on support.!!Early Years Foundation Stage by Wendy Dormer !As the year concludes for our Early Years team and children we can all be very proud of our successes. More children have achieved at expected levels at the end of the Foundation Stage and we’ve attained a significant reduction in the gap between the highest and lowest scorers. Compared to National 2013 averages, the cohort average score is 2% higher and our attainment gap between the highest and lowest scores is 26 compared to 36 nationally. Credit must be given to our new Reception Teachers who’ve had to manage high levels of pupil transition and late entry of a number of new children into the year group. Children who attended Melcombe Nursery outperformed those who didn’t with 17% more children achieving at expected levels. 75% of the highest scorers were also MPS Nursery children. None of the 5 lowest scoring children had attended our Nursery. What makes these achievements even more significant is recognising that 92% of this year’s Reception cohort are identified as vulnerable children based on Children’s Centre target groups.!Both year groups have been supported well by families and parents with community experiences. Nursery have attended the Ballet at Riverside studios and Reception saw a theatre performance. They’ve also celebrated with visits to Bishops Park and the arrival of

eggs to be hatched into chicks. Participation in International Mud Day has further allowed new experiences for Nursery children In keeping with the ethos of outdoor learning.!Nursery are also incredibly privileged to have been in partnership with the NHS speech and language team where they have been 1 of 3 LBHF Nurseries to participate in the pilot study of onsite speech and language delivery. This allowed for all children to have their communication skills assessed and initially showed 75% of children achieving below expected levels. The 16 children who were most at risk have accessed targeted groups or onsite speech therapy. This has really impacted on communication levels and supported families who could work with the therapist instead of having to travel to either Parsons Green or White City. Proposals are now in place to continue this programme as a paid service as the results have been so beneficial to our children.!Demand for places in both the Nursery and Reception classes is higher than in any previous year. Reception classes for 2014-15 will be full in September, which has never happened in previous years. Nursery will continue staggered entry with children starting in September and January to ensure as many children as possible are able to access MPS Nursery when they are 3.!Finally thank you to all the dedicated staff who strive to maintain our outstanding provision. This has been a year full of challenges and lots of learning but everyone continues to work hard. We are fortunate to have a team who truly believe in the value of Early Years education.!!Values Education by Carol Campbell !Many values-related workshops and activities took place during the Summer Term, including such diverse events such as our Healthy Eating and Smoothie-Making workshops, to our reflective ‘Choices’ workshop for Year Six pupils. !!The values of children and staff at Melcombe Primary School were showcased on our recent Year Six School Journey, where children learned independence and co-operation, as well as empathy and teamwork. A good time was had by all!!!Upper Phase Teachers have been planning sharing assemblies, which incorporate values that they have worked on over the past year. So far we have had a rap about life in Year Six and Year Four are going to demonstrate some Circus Skills that they have learnt.!!SEN by Jenny Cox !At present we have 9 children with Statements of Special Educational Needs. 1 more statement is in the process of being finalised. 1 child with a statement is transferring to an out of borough secondary school.!In September 2014 there is a possibility of having several children in our reception classes who are in the process of having statements. !• 1 child with an agreed statements for ASD has come through the correct channels!• 1 child with an agreed statements for Visual Impairment has come through the correct

channels!• another child from our nursery with a Specific Language Impairment is at the SA2 stage

and we hope he will be transferring to Miles Coverdale Unit once his statement is agreed.!

• another child from our nursery with delay in all areas of her development- possibly ASD is at the SA1 stage and we hopes she will be transferring to a more suitable placement once her statement is agreed.!

• The school will be seeking support through a statement for a child with higher functioning ASD who is currently in our nursery!

• A child is transferring from Normand Croft with a diagnosis of ASD and his statement is at the SA2 stage. When his parents filled out the application form the process of obtaining a statement had not begun so they made no mention of his condition on the forms.!!

There may well be others, who come into the high need SEND category, but this will not be known until September 2014.!I have recently carried out Annual Reviews of all of the children with Statements and it is very pleasing to see the progress that they have made in core areas of the curriculum. The staff who work with these children are very dedicated to them and almost will them to succeed.!!A further analysis of children with SEND who achieve targets will be published online in September 2014.!!Healthy Schools by Wayne Leeming !The school received the Bronze Award for Healthy Schools in the Summer Term. This was presented to the Head Boy and Head Girl by Colin Day who represented the Hammersmith & Fulham Healthy Schools and was the result of an audit of the school which was attended by Ms Jan Goulstone, representing the school’s governors, Mr Wayne Leeming and Ms Carol Campbell.!!Student Voice !Rights Respectors by Carol Campbell !To launch our Healthy Eating week on group decided on Article 24: Every child has the right clean water and nutritious food. In Summer Term 1, the Rights Respecting Group decided that the half term project should be based upon Article 24. The homework topic was a success, with many children from Reception to Year Six producing impressive work, which coincided with our Healthy Eating week. A selection of the projects and posters are on display in the Middle Hall. !International Ambassadors by Wayne Leeming !The International Ambassadors did not meet in the Summer Term although we continued to maintain our links with the Flemish school, continued to support Kagiso Molepe through World Vision and are in the planning stages of deciding what to do to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War. !Eco Warriors by Jenny Cox !Eco warriors have: • planted strawberries • eaten the strawberries that they have grown • constructed bird boxes to go in our garden area • maintained the bird feeders The children are very motivated and will soon have waterproofed their bird boxes, so they are ready to go in the gardens area.

Recently a child from year 3 won the school a composter in a borough wide competition run by Urban Studies. Her poster was about the value of recycling. !Mediators by Jacqueline Parram !Mediators continue to do an excellent job during Lunchtime. They are responsible and caring and they adhere to their rota. The Mediators are consistent when dealing incidents and friendship issues that arise in the North and South playground. The Midday Meals Supervisors have reported that having them in the playground makes a huge difference as they interact and befriend the children who in turn, enjoy their presence. The Mediators and I communicate daily with updates of issues and any changes that may occur. !Junior Road Safety Officers by Kim Murray !During the summer term we have had BMX workshops for KS2 which the children loved and were great fun. We also had a very successful competition for children who rode to school on their bikes or scooters with these children receiving some wonderful prizes from Louise Powell from Bike It. There were even prizes for the members of staff who rode to work on their bicycles. In the next couple of weeks we will again be having a Bike It workshop with Louise. !Prefects by Carol Campbell !Head Boy, Jakub and Head Girl, Chearna, went from strength to strength in their joint responsibility for the smooth running of the Prefects’ timetable, which includes monitoring lunchtime behaviour; helping out in the dining room; being in charge of Playground Buddies and Peer Mediators, and Safety in School. During wet playtimes, Prefects are allocated a class in which they help to organise games and activities. Their dedication ensures that children at Melcombe are able to enjoy their rights and appreciate their responsibilities. The Rights Respecting theme continued, as our Head Boy and Girl visited the Houses of Parliament and learned a great deal about the history of the building. !Enterprisers by Robyn Pearce !The Enterprises Children of Melcombe Primary recently attended an outing, organised by Enabling Enterprise, to Societe Generale. The children were presented with a specific challenge in which they learnt the following skills: how to work in teams, develop plans, overcome problems and present back their final ideas. Invaluable insight into the core values of a main organisation was a central focus throughout the day. The next event is a challenge day to be held at the school - will be taking place in the Autumn Term. !Fairtraders by Gwen Cummins !No meeting took place in the Summer Term.!!Melcombe Children’s Centre by Wendy Dormer !This term continues to see growth throughout all areas of the Children’s Centre with data now showing 87% of our reach area children registered. Family support cases are indicating successes with housing and support for children with disabilities. There remains

a significant need around housing issues with a greater proportion of families being evicted and relocated out of Hammersmith and Fulham due to the housing crisis. Attendance and contact has increased to X% with target group attendance at X%.!!In June we worked in partnership with the CLCH NHS dental team to launch a new book to promote children’s oral health. A wonderful day was held introducing ‘Dinosaur Douglas and the beastly bugs’ to our families and was attended by Government dental health officials and the press. Over 80 people attended the event and all children received a copy of the book. Further promotions are continuing throughout LBHF. Impact follow ups indicate it has received very positive reviews.!!Partnerships are continuing to develop strongly with midwives having completed a community service level agreement to work out of our centre. We are also about to embark on a pilot project together with Fulham Central Children’s Centre to develop an LBHF integrated health and education check for 2 year olds. This will mean working together with our PVI settings and providers of the funded 2 year old offer. By September 2015 this will become statutory so we are keen to lead on this before it is implemented throughout LBHF. !!We are also celebrating individual successes this term with 95% of our ESOL parents having sat their exams and await their results towards the end of the term. Our sewing families also held a stall at Portobello Market and spent 2 days selling their creations.!Summative analysis of both Melcombe’s Nursery and Reception 2014 results have once again proved the value of Children’s Centre with the data clearly evidencing higher achievement for the majority of children who’ve attended centres. Of the 10 children moving into the next year group who remain at risk in both the Melcombe Nursery and Reception classes, none came to Children’s Centres. !!Both Wendy and Fiona have been part of the stakeholders Tri borough working party to develop the Early Help offer. This integrated partnerships deal is aimed at all families with children under 19 throughout the 3 boroughs and a significant amount of joint work is being done to establish what this offer will look like and how health, education and community partners can work together to promote preventative wellbeing for our families. !Finally I must once again praise the staff, volunteers and students who all work incredibly hard to maintain high levels of care, education and support for our families. Family audits and evaluations all show a 100% satisfaction rate with many parents claiming they would not know what to do without the services provided by the Centre. We all work with dedicated passion to increase the life chances of our under 5’s, so please continue to promote us and tell all families with a child under 5 about !!Safeguarding by Jenny Cox !This will be circulated by Ms Cox at the Full Governors meeting!!!!!!!!

School Strengths & Areas to Develop !Strengths of the School Rationale

1! The Teaching & Learning Model! This is the systematic way in which all lessons are taught at Melcombe. This model ensures all children are able to access the learning, understand the value of what they are learning and know what they need to do to be successful.

!The Teaching & Learning model was scrutinised at a training day at the end of the Spring Term to bring it in line with current methods and in accordance with our target from Ofsted.

2 Literacy Planning and Toolkits! These are the systematic, differentiated and progressive planning for Literacy and the teaching aids which are used to support the teaching of Literacy from Nursery through to Year 6.

!Staff liked the ease of use, the consistency of the planning and that it ensured children were working at the correct level. It also ensures that there is progression from one year to the next.

3 Behaviour Management in class! This is the system used across the school to deal with minor behaviour issues within the class during teaching time.

!Staff felt that they were empowered to deal with minor behaviour issues to ensure the least disruption to teaching and learning within the classroom.

4 KS2 Results! These are the end of school results by the Year 6s and include Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science. They are measured against targets set by the school, previous years’ results and nationally.

!The end of key stage results in Year 6 continue to be above national expectation and our value added figures continue to be a strength of the school.

5 Trips and First Hand Experiences! The staff take the children out on various trips and invite guests in to the school to initiate learning and create excitement around the topic.

!Teachers felt that the quality and amount of trips and experiences that staff organise is a strength of the school and ensures children maintain a love for learning.

6 Progress of children across the school!Tracking the results of the children across the school, particularly at the end of EYFS, KS1 and KS2, and comparing them to the aspirational targets set at the beginning of each year indicates that most children make good progress.

!Teachers felt that the quality and amount of trips and experiences that staff organise is a strength of the school and ensures children maintain a love for learning.

Page 25: Head Teacher’s Report to the Governorsmelcombeprimary.weebly.com/uploads/2/...gov_report... · Head Teachers Report to the Governors. Summer 2014 Pg 2 ... All governors should receive

!

7 Monitoring! This is the system whereby the senior leaders observe staff teaching and staff observe each other and rate the standards they have observed.

!Staff felt that the monitoring system was consistent and helpful. Underpinning the entire process was the need to support in a positive rather than destructive manner.

8 Middle Leaders! All teaching staff who are not senior leaders and who lead a subject are considered to be Middle Leaders.

!The school has ensured that Middle Leaders have a greater say in the running of the school and are given more responsibility. This ensures that the school is able to draw upon this group to fill more senior positions.

9 Pastoral Care! This is the amount of effort put in by the staff of the school to the children’s welfare to ensure the children are safe both at school and home, and able to learn.

!The staff felt that the school values pastoral care, devotes a considerable amount of time to it and consequently has a very strong pastoral care system in place.

10 8 to 5 Care! This is the chance for children to be at school from 8am to 5pm by providing structured opportunities both before and after the normal school day.

!Staff noted the Breakfast Club growing from strength to strength and the opportunity this gave to parents to send their child to school at 8am. The amount and variety of after-school clubs was also seen as a great strength of the school.

Areas of Concern Rationale

1 Behaviour Systems These are the systems which kick in when a child’s behaviour warrants further action than discussed in Behaviour Management in Class such as Reflection and Exclusion.

!Staff felt that they were not consulted enough in a child’s “punishment” and that often a child who was considered to be in “big trouble” only received a minor telling-off and was seen outside in the playground instead of spending the whole of lunch time in Reflection.

2 Assessing Maths The school follows the Maths Makes Sense approach to Numeracy but assesses using the QCA and other assessment packages.

!Teachers felt that there is an inconsistency and serious gap in what they know children are able to achieve and do achieve when assessed using other types of assessment.

Melcombe Primary School. Head Teachers Report to the Governors. Summer 2014 Pg 25

Page 26: Head Teacher’s Report to the Governorsmelcombeprimary.weebly.com/uploads/2/...gov_report... · Head Teachers Report to the Governors. Summer 2014 Pg 2 ... All governors should receive

3 Staff Retention This is the school’s ability or inability to retain staff who have been trained in the Melcombe ways and who move to other schools for various reasons.

!Staff felt that the school spent a lot of time and effort into training new staff and that all this went to waste when these teachers left the school. They wished to see teaching and support staff retained at the school through initiatives which would make Melcombe more attractive to staff.

4 Punctuality of Children Although attendance and punctuality have always been a problem, and the school has spent the last two years successfully tackling attendance, punctuality remains a problem

!Teaching staff noted that often children would only arrive at school after 0930 which meant that they had in effect missed a lesson. They wish to see practical measures put in place to encourage punctuality and identify the parents and children with persistent punctuality issues.

5 Technology Issues These are the problems the staff have with the photocopier, printers, computers and laptops.

!The staff noted the amount of time wasted when the photocopier was out of order and other solutions had to be found. The photocopier is the biggest “technology issue” and staff would like to have a reliable colour photocopier for their use. The current set of children’s computers and laptops have now become either broken or obsolete and staff noted that this meant ICT was no longer being taught correctly at the school. Staff noted that the new curriculum demanded a more advanced type of ICT be taught (Coding) from next year and this was impossible in our current circumstances.

6 School Dinners The dinners children receive at lunch time from the school.

!The following issues were identified: • Food running out (more regularly

recently) and some children getting cheese for lunch

• Portions being inconsistent - KS1 receiving too much food and KS2 too little.

• Children with specific dietary needs not getting a decent meal.

• Dinner staff being surly and difficult with the children

!What’s new? !Bird Watching !This term we started a new course in the Melcombe University where the children have been going out every Friday afternoon to Bird Watch. The course is being run by Ms Amber Roberts and consists of approximately 10 children. !!Sports’ Week & Healthy Eating Week !This Summer’s Sports’ Week was highly successful with new sports being added and children experiencing sports other than the norm. The school took part in Healthy Eating Week for the first time this Summer and this led in to the Sports’ Week !!Attendance Party !Due to the large number of children who are now achieving 100% attendance at the school, it has been decided that instead of taking them out on a trip, to hold an Attendance Party at the school. This will be a first for us.!!New Films !Two new films about Melcombe are now available on the school’s website. The first is an “advert” for the school, showing the children enjoying school and talking about their day at Melcombe. The second is a child-friendly (ie parent-friendly) film about the school’s teaching and learning model wherein the children explain each part and the need for it.!!Choir !The school has begun to take part in celebrations of choral music.

7 Communal Areas Areas inside the school building such as outside the Admin Office and outside the Melcombe Shop on the Ground Floor, and these areas on the two floors above.

!Staff felt that these needed to be smartened up and would like a corporate approach to displays. At present the areas looked untidy and uncared for and were in need of urgent attention.

8 Playgrounds The North and South Playgrounds.

!Staff noted that these playgrounds were eyesores and required a committee to begin looking at how they could be improved and what money could be allocated to their improvement.

9 Reading Scheme This is the consistent and progressive scheme for reading in the school.

!It was identified that there were a number of systems in place and that a whole-school approach to reading was required in order to ensure that all year groups enjoyed the same attention to reading.
