Editorial Good morning from Australia. I am away on a family history visit 'Down Under' and currently visiting many of the Cornish communities that exist here. The Yorke Peninsula to the west of Adelaide is a rich area for Cornish heritage. The three towns of Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo each have a special place in the history of the Cornish in South Australia. I have spoken with a large number of Cornish descendants, sadly none whose ancestors lived in Polgooth, they are very interested in Cornwall and everything we do. A number are visiting Cornwall during the coming months and I hope that if you meet any of them you will give them a 'Proper' Cornish welcome. As I left Cornwall the temperature was in the high teens and low twenties. On arrival in Adelaide it was much the same! My visit to Alice Springs and Ayers Rock was, however, different with temperatures reaching a hot and dry 40 degrees Celsius , that is 104 Fahrenheit for those who are not yet metric!! Still on the subject of 'Down Under' we have an article from one of our New Zealand readers and I am sure you will find it interesting and perhaps be able to help Keith with his quest. This edition sees a contribution from one of our younger readers and it is a short piece that may provoke some thought! I hope that other young readers will find the time and interest to contribute articles, perhaps commenting on the one sent in by Curran. Time has moved on and I am now on my way back to Polgooth via Hong Kong. The city is busy, vibrant, clean and seemingly very safe. The main problem right now is that it is raining VERY HARD. This has limited some spectacular views from 'The Peak' and also any trips into the many markets, including the allegedly famous 'Goldfish Market' This edition sees more updates on babies mentioned in the first issues, please keep them coming in. Finally as this edition will cover the Diamond Jubilee, it has been suggested that a walk takes place in the village area similar to the ones held on New Years Day in the past. It is therefore suggested that anyone wishing to take part in a short walk in the village should meet at The Polgooth Inn at 10am on Monday 4th

June. The walk will be easy and all on roads so prams are most welcome. Please keep an eye out for notices in the village closer to the date. By the time you receive this edition of the Polgooth Times, we will have printed a ‘History of Polgooth’ booklet with a special article by Charlie Lovell, who many of you will remember as a local headmaster. Please keep an eye out in the pub and the Post Office where copies will be on sale. The website at http://www.polgoothtimes.co.uk/ is up and running and more back issues are being put on-line. Please let me know if you do visit the site and what you think. Any help in running the site would be greatly appreciated.

CONGRATULATIONS I would like to congratulate my daughter, Julie Passmore of Bramshill, Trelowth Road, on passing her Grade 4 Ballet Exam with Distinction. This a tremendous achievement given the fact that Julie did not receive any dance teaching as a child and she only started attending ballet lessons four years ago at the tender age of thirty four! Well done Julie. Angela Champion.

The deadline for articles for the next edition is 6 July 2012. PLEASE NOTE this is the deadline, the arrival of the Polgooth Times in your homes will be about 6-7 weeks later so please consider any date critical events you are advertising or when you are asking people to respond to competitions etc. Please leave any handwritten or typed items in the red box in the Polgooth Stores or better still email them to me.

Polgooth Playing Field Commiee

On the Polgooth facebook page there have been a number of photos added from the

1980s and 1990s, many of them are of the annual carnivals held in the village (some

featured on page 2). This prompted one friend to say “Bring back Polgooth Carnival”, a

statement which many other friends agreed with. Is this the right me then to

reinstate the Polgooth Playing Field Commiee? The commiee organised many of the

village events such as the carnival, sports day etc but was wound up in 2002.

A meeng is due to be held on Wednesday 23rd

May at 7.30pm in the village hall to

establish whether there are any members of the village who are willing to come

together to resurrect the commiee.

My name is Curran Snell and I am a proud Cornishman aged 12, living in Polgooth. As many do, I feel a strong passion and belief that Kernow should, or even is a country. These are my views on Cornwall and the youth of today: In this day and age more and more children and young adults are becoming hypnotised by the so called ‘X Box and PS3’ consoles dominating their lives. Many have forgotten the ways of old. We have forgot those long, summer weekends. Those fun childhood memories my father and grandfather recall and remember. That is why I and many others have joined and are now running a division in the Mid. Cornwall Liberation Army. For short the MCLA. In this we leave those video games behind, forget indoors, and whatever the weather we go and participate in those fun, outdoor activities so many have forgotten. Can you remember lighting fires in the woods by an improvised shelter roasting marshmallows? Can you remember eating a delicious hot pasty whilst on a long hike through the fields of a country village? Well that is what MCLA is all about. However in the MCLA everybody shares a strong belief that Cornwall should be an independent country. Did you know that the English Parliament and monarch used to burn the tongues out of anyone who spoke Cornish? Did you know that parliament owe Cornwall alone 500 billion pounds? Yes they do, due to the atrocities carried out and the double amount of taxes charged to us in the 17th century. Do you want to be paying taxes that go towards building a road in Yorkshire, or do you want to be paying smaller taxes that go towards flood defences in Cornwall– to protect our precious landscape? The choice is yours. These are my views. Please feel free to leave a note to Curran at the shop and look out for us on manoeuvres! Curran Snell

St Mewan under Fives

We have had a very busy and happy term at St Mewan Under 5’s. The children have had the chance to get outside as the weather got warmer and recently enjoyed short walks up to the park and to visit the river at Tyshute Lane. This term the children got a chance to learn all about “our senses” and we organised many activities to make this fun and exciting. Back in March, Tanya and Alex Williams kindly let us descend at the pub on mass for their annual St Pirans Day Celebrations where all the children got a chance to make a pasty and listen to traditional Cornish Tales. Thanks again to Alex and Tanya for organising this. We also held a “Bunny Hop” for Easter up at the playing field, the weather was very kind and it helped raise money for the playgroup. On April 2nd we arranged a trip to Newquay Zoo for the children to see Mr Bloom from Cbeebies. A total of 32 children and their parents came along and we all had great fun in the sunshine looking at all the lovely animals. Sadly at the end of the term we said goodbye to six of our oldest children who moved up to St Mewan Preschool we wish them all the best for the future and are sure that they will have lots of fun! We also said goodbye to Play Assistant Sam Cottilard who had been with us for 11 years. We are so pleased as Sam has moved on to be a Assistant Midwife a job she had been dreaming of, Good Luck Sam we will miss you so much! Over the holidays we have been working hard on preparing St Mewan Under 5’s allotment which is down in front of the pub and this is now ready for planting. We are hoping to take the children down to learn all about the importance of “growing your own “ and “ where food comes from” on a twice weekly basis. We are so lucky to have this great outdoor space - thanks again to Tanya and Alex for donating it to us and thank you to my husband Darren Rogers for preparing it for us. Our sessions run from 9.15 am - 12.15 pm everyday apart from Wednesday when we have an additional session from 12.40pm - 4.40pm or children can stay all day and also access our lunchtime club. The term after a child’s 3rd birthday they are entitled to 5 free 3 hours sessions a week due to government funding. We arrange this all for you. The children at St Mewan Under 5’s have the opportunity to learn and socialise with the other children. WE have some fantastic resources and set up exciting activities based on the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. Storytime, songs and rhymes, snack time and mark making are all an important part of the daily sessions. We offer taster sessions to give you the chance to ask any questions and to get your child familiar with the setting. Feel free to contact us on 01726 76001 or call in during term time. Bunnies Toddler Group runs every Wednesday morning (term time ) in the front hall. It is a fun, safe, secure and friendly place for young children to play. Tea and coffee also available. Call 01726 76001 for any more information. St Mewan Under 5’s is a committee run playgroup, we hope that at the AGM held on the 11th May, a new chairperson will have been elected.

Polgooth Ladies Group January meeting was held on a very cold night, but a good number attended. News given of the sad loss of Mrs Foot who had recently passed away. Speaker for the meeting was Ian Morris from Jeffreys Auctioneers, who gave a most interesting talk on antiques and then gave valuations of various items which had been brought in by members of the group. A selection of postcards, pictures and jewellery was examined– but sadly no overnight millionaires! In February, the guest speaker gave a lively and amusing talk about the railway line and trains which ran from St Austell to the beach at Pentewan. Many memories were stirred that night as, although not still in use at the time of our childhood some of us could recall the line being in situ. Newspaper reports helped to illustrate the story. March arrived, and the meeting was as usual held in the Village Hall. The speaker was Tamsin Thomas who described all aspects of the RNLI. Many may recall her talking about this subject as a member of staff at Radio Cornwall. A subject dear to many listeners, very ably presented and enjoyed by all. The meeting ended as always with the raffle and tea and biscuits. The Ladies Group meets on the last Tuesday each month at 7.30pm, in the hall. We always welcome new members so come along and join us.

FRIDAY CLUB To say it's been hectic since Christmas is an understatement! The children have been so busy preparing for Mothering Sunday and Easter. This included making beautiful gifts of bookmarks, daffodil plants in pots and decorated chocolate holders for our super Mums. The Mothering Sunday celebration service centred around "Strictly Come Mothering" and we even had "guest" appearances from Bruce Forsyth, Floss Daly and of course the judges - Bruno Toenails, Arlene Over-Sideways and Craig Reveal-All. Before we knew it Easter was fast approaching and the children were busy as bees making masks, chocolate egg boxes and colourful items for the Church board. They also worked very hard practising for the Easter Musical. This was performed on Easter Sunday morning to a congregation that filled the Church. It was a fantastic modern version of the Easter message by J and J Productions: performed well by S.A.M.S. A huge thank you to ALL involved. For further information regarding Friday Club please contact Pam Hitchens 01726 72790, or for information about S.A.M.S please call Julie Passmore 01726 64401.

War on Brambles

The day of action dawned beautiful and sunny, definitely a day to be outside! A merry band assembled in the Goffin to find Michael Ball and grandchildren had already started by finishing off an area begun last summer. Another group started work in the playing field clearing a corner where the brambles were encroaching on the football pitch meaning any youngsters taking a corner penalty risked scratches from the brambles or stings from nettles – surely a foul! Work started in earnest and by lunchtime the pitch had been reclaimed. Work was also carried out on the bank that the slide sits on. It was slow and steady work but by mid-afternoon standing back and admiring the view, the team realised how much had been achieved. Thank you to all those families who turned out to help: the Kendalls, Hewitts, Lovells, Cockings, Games, Spencers and Warrens. Anybody wishing to get involved is VERY welcome. Weather permitting we are aiming to assemble every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, from 10am to 2pm-ish – come for ½ hour or the whole time, any help is grateful. Smaller work parties are also welcome to assist for shorter periods on other occasions, eg. evenings however in this Health and Safety obsessed world we live in before any sessions are begun it is necessary to contact the council so please telephone 01726 75362 to advise. Polgooth Methodist Church

As I write, this Easter is upon us. All around us we see

evidence of new life; lambs in the fields, spring flowers in the

hedges and gardens and leaves appearing on the trees. The

Christian message at Easter is one of new life, as the sadness of

the crucifixion is replaced by the joy of the empty tomb. Jesus

had conquered death and, as a result, believers need no longer

live in fear of death.

On 5th March we had a well attended coffee morning with bring

and buy in the church. All money raised went to Cornwall

Hospice Care. Why not come along to one of our coffee

mornings, they take place on the first Monday each month at

10.30am.

Our All age Worship services continue to be well attended. On

Mothering Sunday the children took part in the service and later

presented their mums with pots of daffodil bulbs, some in bloom.

They had previously been prepared at the Friday Group. On 8th

July we are hoping that our service will be in the park and will

have an Olympic theme, possibly followed by childrens sports

and a picnic lunch.

Watch out for posters.

Many of you will be aware by now that the village is organising a

special event for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. As part of this we

will be holding a celebration Service in the church on 3rd June at

10.30am. Let’s see the village come together and celebrate

together.

Other special services that we are hoping to organise in the

church in the coming months is a service for those who have

suffered bereavement, and another for families whose children

have been baptised in the church in recent years.

Invitations will be given out as soon as the final arrangements

have been made.

As usual we extend a invitation for you to join us at any of our

events and services in the church. We meet every Sunday at

10.30am.

People

We continue in our series of updates from those Polgooth babies whose births were reported in the very first issues of the Polgooth Times.

Amy Elizabeth Harding to Polyear Close in December 1980 After leaving my first job at the village shop in 2000, I went to Buckinghamshire University and gained a degree in Psychology and Criminology. I then travelled for six months to Australia and Thailand with friends, before returning home to Cornwall in 2004. I am currently an Officer within the Youth Offending Service and live locally in Foxhole with my husband Max (we tied the knot last year). We hope to return to live in Polgooth one day, close to mum and dad who still live in the village. Photo: Amy and Max during their wedding at St Mewan

Stuart May to the Cooperage, Trelowth Road in April 1981 I left Polgooth in 1998 to study at Bicton College of Agriculture in Devon. The 3 year course included a years placement on a farm and I was very fortunate to work with the Stratton family on their large estate in Wiltshire. On completing the course I then continued my studies at Harper Adams Agricultural College in Shropshire, graduating with a Higher National Diploma in Agriculture in 2002. I moved back to Cornwall and began working on the family farm situated between Polgooth and Sticker. The main enterprises are beef and arable and I run the farm with my parents. I became involved with Probus Young Farmers’ Club in 2004 becoming chairman of the club in 2005 and then Treasurer in 2007. During my time in young farmers I have travelled to Northern Ireland cycling 400 miles and walked 120miles across Devon raising for charity on both occasions. I’ve also had the opportunity to attend conferences in Oxford and London representing the Cornish federation. Probus YFC is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and I am currently the Club Leader. I have fond memories of growing up in Polgooth and I always looked forward to taking part in the village pantomime, carnival, sports day and bonfire night. I am still great friends with Adam and Richard featured in the last issue of the Polgooth Times. I am really pleased that in recent years

they have both moved back home to Cornwall and it is nice to catch up with them whilst enjoying a pint or two at the Polgooth Inn. REFLECTIONS

My last yards homeward are climbing an uphill track on foot. Watching carefully I avoid jutting stones and tree roots. Behind me in the stamps engine house of Polgooth Mine and up ahead is my home, The Account House, built in 1878 and where the mine manager lived. The hill sweeps upward on my right and down to the valley stream the Clissey on my left side. Beech, Wild cherry, Oaks, Hazel and Hawthorn are the main trees, the bird life is good and of course there are grey squirrels. Near my feet on the path edges grow wild strawberries and also primroses of many shades. It’s worth looking down, especially when sunny after a shower. If I’m lucky, very occasionally I’ll catch a diamond-like glint and I know it won’t be a glow worm. I delve into the soil and have to prise the little gem free with a key, I’ve found the beautiful clear quartz crystal about the size of a small fairy light bulb. It has 5 glass-like shiny sides and a pointed top. They can be biro width or thinner and half to one inch long. Indoors I wash the mud off and admire its sparkle as it reflects daylight on my window sill. I feel it’s a bit of history coming to light. Pauline Sweet

‘Tonkins of Polgooth’. The repercussions of ‘a little white lie’ have resulted in ‘widespread’ travel and years of research but I am still in pursuit of any information readers might have on the ‘Tonkin’s of Polgooth’. Let me explain. Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, my mother convinced all that she was ‘Australian’ so when the opportunity arose, I waved goodbye and with mother’s blessing, set off to make face to face contact with my ‘Aussie’ grandparents. To cut a long story short, the twelve thousand mile journey to northern New South Wales proved to be a ‘wild goose chase’ and I was rather perturbed to learn that my ‘Aussie’ grandparents were a figment of mother’s imagination. I found this phenomenon most intriguing so I ventured into genealogy research and low and behold I discovered ‘the skeleton in the cupboard’ that triggered this Australian myth: My mother was born out of wedlock to Rosie Tonkin, a Cornish lass! Although I was somewhat taken aback at this discovery, I was delighted to learn that I had Cornish blood in my veins and I was no longer an ‘Irishman, I am an ‘Irishcornishman’! My grandmother Rosie ‘TONKIN' was born in Polgooth 16th June 1900 and later gave birth to my mother Joyce ‘TONKIN’ in London 4th July 1920. My Great Grandfather, Rosie’s dad was David TONKIN (1872 -1917), son of James TONKIN (1836 -1914). Their respective wives were Mabel Alice MAY (1876 -1961) and Susan JOB (1839 -1900). Susan’s father John JOB (1800 -1859) was Victualler of ‘The Polgooth Inn’ and this role was later taken over by his widow Elizabeth MELLOW (1810 – 1877). I have unearthed documentation confirming that my Great, Great Grandfather James TONKIN eventually owned the inn and raised his family within its confines! The most recent relative that I have information of is that of Vera Maud TONKIN nee TRELEAVEN thanks to an online BBC article last updated March 2003 announcing the celebration of her 100th birthday in Polgooth. To conclude, the only photograph I have in my possession of past relatives is that of my Great Grandmother Mabel Alice Tonkin nee MAY, I have no idea what other family members looked like and I yearn for more information on any of the aforementioned surnames! I was born in Ireland but have resided in New Zealand for the past thirty three years. I had the pleasure of spending a few days in ‘Polgooth Village’ last year but see the need to return to the district again as my research remains incomplete. This time round I have opted to stay in Sticker Village and have confirmed accommodation from 9th to 15th August 2012. Chatting to the locals, nostalgic strolls along the lanes and byways my ancestors once walked on their way to school, work, church and the ‘Polgooth Inn’ remain high on my agenda. Any leads or snippets of information ‘Polgooth Times’ readers might have would be gratefully appreciated. Email: [email protected]

Polgooth Methodist Church

I am writing this on Easter Monday. Yesterday in church we celebrated the greatest event in the Christian calendar and, began our service with the hymn ‘Jesus, Christ is risen today’. One of the saddest things in our service is that so many people live without hope. Yet all those years ago God raised Jesus to life – death was conquered. The death of Jesus on that first Good Friday followed by his resurrection a few days later means that hope is available to everyone. That hope manifests itself in a fulfilled life for now and certainly for the future. Our Easter celebration started on Palm Sunday with everyone being given a Palm cross. On Good Friday we met together for a time of reflection and communion. The Easter Sunday celebration took the form of All Age Worship with children, parents and grandparents attending. We examined the affect on our lives today of those first Easter events wit ha series of questions, Why? What? How? and Who? This was aided by children singing, playing percussion instruments, Sharon, Rhys, Lucy and Callum performing a puppet sketch and Lucy dancing. ‘Celebration’ was definitely the right word for that event. Another event, which attracted all ages to the church took place on a Friday evening, 26th February. It seemed quite fitting that we called it ‘Holy Commotion’ as at times there was a lot of noise from the singing, led by guitar, and percussion instruments. The evening was led by Mr Andrew Nicholson who is the Cornwall Methodist District Youth Enabler. We sat around tables, sang, prayed, made paper airplanes and flew them and generally enjoyed worship. We are now looking forward to other special events due to take place in the next few months. Over the weekend of 7th, 8th and 9th May we have a visit from our friend Rev.David Cole of Exeter. On the Friday evening David will be speaking to the children’s and Livewires Groups. On the Saturday morning he will be speaking at the Men’s Breakfast at St Mewan Parish Church Hall and then on Sunday 9th May leading our All Age Worship. In 1983 our original church building was sold and work began on renovating the building we are now using. This work was completed in 1985 and so this year we have a 25th Anniversary celebration. This will take place over the weekend of the 9th, 10th and 11th July. Matthew Shepherd of Radio Cornwall has very kindly agreed to do another concert for us and this will be in the Village Hall on the Friday evening. On Saturday 10th July there will be a Village Fete with stalls, children’s sports, cream teas, BBQ etc. We also welcome to this event Rev. Steve Wild, Chairman of the Methodist District and he has kindly agreed to organise a puppet workshop. Our Anniversary Celebration Worship will take the form of an Open air Service in the park at 10.30am on 11th July. We look forward to this weekend being not just a church celebration but a village celebration. Our church in the village is open to all. We meet regularly on Sunday mornings at 10.30am and would welcome you to join us. Maybe you have Why?, How? And What? Questions regarding the Christian faith. If so and you feel the church can help you in any way, please contact me on 01726 75362. Tony Warren (Lay Pastor)

Make A Will and help raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care

during Make A Will Week - 21st to 25th May 2012 If you are reading this, it may well be that you have yet to make a Will or you wish to make some changes to your existing Will. Surprisingly, for many people, making a Will is one of those tasks that never quite gets done even though we know it is important. The Cornwall Hospice Care Make A Will Week, which runs from 21st – 25th May this year, could provide the perfect opportunity to make sure everything is in order. More than 15 solicitor offices, from all over Cornwall, are offering their time, free of charge, to write standard Wills – or update existing Wills. Instead of being paid the usual fee, the participating solicitors are asking for a donation to be made to Cornwall Hospice Care, the Cornish charity which provides specialist clinical care and support to adults with life-limiting illnesses through its two hospices; St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle

and Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. For Wills made during Make A Will Week, suggested donations are £75 for a single Will, £110 for a pair of husband and wife ‘mirror’ Wills and £40 for a Codicil to update an existing Will. For a full list of participating solicitors call 01726 66868 or visit the website www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk This is the fifth year the charity has organised this campaign. Said Dee Reeves, Legacies Officer for Cornwall Hospice Care: “When someone you love dies, you are in turmoil. If there is no Will then it complicates matters for everyone at an already difficult time. Leaving a Will, with clear instructions as to what you want to happen to your property, really helps your loved ones. And, most of all, it gives you peace of mind. Last year, more than 200 people took the opportunity to make a Will during our Make a Will Week and, in the process, they raised nearly £22,000 in donations which will help towards essential running costs at our two hospices to ensure the provision of adult hospice care here in Cornwall now and in the future.”

St Mewan Parish Council

At the most recent meeting, the Annual Parish Meeting, each Chairman of the sub-Committees reported on the year’s events and the Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Jenny Padley gave her report. Also, Cllr Lord Teverson, your Ward Councillor, told us what Cornwall Council were up to. He answered several questions about the new re-cycling and black bag collections and also about the proposed Cornish Stadium. He assured the meeting that Cornwall Council were not going to either fund the stadium or guarantee the money – which had been hinted at in the press. He also spoke about the possible development at Coyte Farm and the likelihood of Sainsbury’s coming there, if they do the meeting thought that the Town Centre would die, especially as Morrison’s had expressed an interest in the old Pentewan Labs site. We would have an Asda, a Tesco, an Aldi and a Lidl, a Co-op plus a Morrison’s and a Sainsbury’s all ‘out of the town centre’. We shall see! Cllr Martin Barnes. 01726 63277
