I was a freshman in High School when I started work on what would become HEADLANDS.I grew up on a small island in the Northwest. I know that may sound kind of backwoods, but really it just served as your typical small town, only surrounded by water. Being a small town, everyone knew everybody.

I’ll never forget the morning I found out about the murder of Ed Ross. I didn’t know Ed, but I did know two of the three kids who were being accused of his murder. It was impossible for me to believe. I knew these guys, liked them even. I had recently heard that they had gotten into the meth scene pretty hard. But that was’nt anything new. I knew alot of people hooked on that shit. This was the norm. But murder... It sent a shockwave through our quaint little town.

I had always wanted to make a big, sprawling movie about youth, and instantly I found this as my spring-board. Perhaps though still needing to experience my own ordeals, I wrote a two-page treatment and set it aside. Over the course of fifteen years I slowly pieced together the screenplay peppering in portions of my life along with stories I’d heard.

Writing this film has been a daunting 15 year personal journey. And visually I know Headlands will be striking and unlike any other. We may be making a “small” film here but i want to create a big theatrical movie going experience for an audience.

I’ve spent years compiling reference photos and scout-ing locations all around the Northwest for this film.

So this book is just a taste for what’s to come. A lot of these photos represent a certain tone or look I’m going for. Some are more direct taken from specific areas i intend to shoot. There are also some sketches from a local graffiti artist, John Sarkis that he drew up after reading the script. Him and I worked together to com-pile them in a more linear order to try to walk people through the story visually.

I feel like we have an opportunity to create something big, epic, something that could tap into the zeitgeist and become iconic.Believe me I’ve been living with this thing in my head for over fifteen years now, HEADLANDS will blow you away.
