The Christmas holiday period is traditionally a quiet one in terms of school activities as families spend this important time together. Several special cultural and sporting opportunities kept a good number of our students and staff occupied for part of that time though and at our staff meeting yesterday we heard reports from the Junior School exchange to Tezukayama in Japan, rowing camps and the 1st XI cricket festival in Canberra. All were very successful and I look forward to hearing more about them through our early assemblies this term. Our enrolments continue to be very strong in 2013 and I am, of course, very encouraged by the affirmation this suggests for the School. 2012 HSC I offer collective congratulations to our 2012 HSC candidates on their strong performance as a group. Beyond the fine achievements of our top students which have been well publicised in the media and the latest edition of Binghi, the year group as a whole performed very well indeed. The analysis of our HSC results presented by Seonia Wark to our staff meeting yesterday highlighted this success and the tight correlation between their increasingly strong academic culture and final scores. This was particularly evident amongst our senior boarders and it was no surprise that 8 of our top 10 achievers were boarders. I know that the support available to them after hours was a key to this success and I offer thanks to the teachers, HSC tutors and boarding staff who generated such a positive environment for them. Middle School Announcement Dennis Dempster has let me know that it is his intention to retire from teaching and his position as Head of Middle School at the end of first semester. As many will know, Dennis founded the TAS Middle School in 2000 after spending all of the previous year in research and preparation for this important milestone in our school’s history. He begins his 14th year in this role in 2013 and the impact of his kind, thoughtful and clear leadership through that time has touched something like 1,000 young lives. I know that he will be much missed and we will have the opportunity to farewell him properly at the end of next term. The Head of Middle School position will be advertised in the coming weeks.

HEADMASTER, MURRAY GUEST

Welcome to the 2013 school year after what I hope has been a refreshing break for all our students, staff and families alike.

Welcome to New StudentsAs the new school year begins, we welcome 89 new students to TAS, including 42 boarders who are now settling into their new home away from home, and I wish each of them well as they make new friends and explore the fresh opportunities all around them. Our enrolments continue to be very strong in 2013 and I am, of course, very encouraged by the affirmation this suggests for the School.

2012 HSCI offer collective congratulations to our 2012 HSC candidates on their strong performance as a group.

Middle School AnnouncementDennis Dempster has let me know that it is his intention to retire from teaching and his position as Head of Middle School at the end of first semester. TAS TALKS 2

Staffing ChangesJamie Suddaby informed me during the holidays that he will move to Duval High School during this term. Mr Suddaby had kindly agreed to remain with us for the first month of this term until his replacement in the Maths Department arrives. Mr Suddaby’s classes will be taken from Week 5 by Mr Michael Burke who joins us from Mendooran Central School where he has been teaching Maths for the past 4 years. We have a number of other new teaching and support staff joining us this year and it has been a pleasure to welcome them over recent weeks as they have been preparing for the term. • David Slade takes up the position of Coordinator of the Technology and Applied Sciences Department. Mr Levins, who has been in this role in recent years, leaves it to focus on his commitments as Director of ICT and I take this opportunity to thank him for his work with the T.A.S. Department. Mr Slade comes to us from St Claire High School in Sydney and with considerable teaching and industry experience in the Technology and Applied Science (T.A.S.) area.• Anne Hine returns to the Junior School staff to teach our extension and enrichment classes. Anne will be well known to many in the Junior School as she has been with us replacing teachers on leave on occasions in recent years. • Caroline Nivison who taught Lizzie Hartley’s classes during her long service leave last year now rejoins the Visual Arts Department to take up that role again.• Amanda Hess joins the HSIE Department in a part-time capacity to teach some additional classes created there. Ms Hess moved with her family to Armidale several years ago, having taught previously at Barker College.• Jo Benham takes up the role of Assistant Chaplain and teacher of Christian Studies from Junior School through to Year 7. Mrs Benham trained as a teacher of agriculture and is now furthering her study in theology. • Bevan Michel takes up the role of T.A.S. KLA Workshop Assistant and will be working with students in the Trades Training Centre. Mr Michel is a trained mechanic, experienced metals fabricator and keen fire fighter. He has most recently been working with Grant McCarroll Ford. • TAS Old Boy Ben Kiss has been appointed as Hoskins Centre Technical Supervisor and will join us in April. In the interim, our 2012 Captain of Drama, Kye Hardingham, has stepped into that role.• Finally, Annikki Reader has been appointed as our new Junior School Homework Centre Assistant. Ms Reader is local to Armidale, has an academic background in community service work qualifications and was most recently an au-pair in Germany through 2012.

New GAPsWe also welcome two new GAP students this term. Adrian Hossell joins us from St. Stithians in Johannesburg and we are awaiting the arrival of Broc Thomas from Harare in Zimbabwe.

Changes to Positions of ResponsibilityIn addition to the new staff welcomed this term, I draw attention to several other key changes to positions, all of which were announced late last year:• Deputy Headmaster ([email protected]) - Alan Jones • Director of Pastoral Care ([email protected]) – Barney Buntine. This new position is an expansion of the former role of Dean of Students to include oversight of all areas of the pastoral care program at TAS. This is in line with our Vision 2025 goals in the area of pastoral care and will specifically include driving the agenda on positive psychology and restorative justice practices.• Director of Co-curricular ([email protected]) - Jason Lincoln. The expansion of Mr Lincoln’s role from Sportsmaster to Director of all Co-curricular activities is designed to create better balance and promote even further breadth of healthy activity for our students. • Abbott Housemaster – Alex Smith • Junior School Curriculum Co-ordinator – Veronica Waters• Cadet Commander – Trevor Thatcher• Cadet Training Officer and Middle School Deputy Housemaster – Chris Pittman

Congratulations to Tim WilliamsonI was delighted to hear that the TAS Dux from 2011, Tim Williamson, has been offered a place in the highly selective Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Science degree at the Australian National University (ANU) this year. This degree is only open to students achieving an ATAR of over 99.0 and requires a rigorous interview process and support from referees. Entry is limited to 8 to 10 students from across the country each year and I congratulate Tim on joining such good company.

Swimming SuccessWhile most of us have been relaxing and enjoying the fruits of summer, Jay Kennedy has been training and competing at a very high level in his swimming though the holidays. He competed in both the New England and North West Area Championships in Muswellbrook at the start of the holidays and then in the NSW State Age Championships at Homebush earlier this month, performing very well in both. He is now well positioned for the next rounds of competition in Tamworth City, the NSW Country Championships and the NSW State Open Championships and I am sure that all at TAS will join me in wishing him well.

HOSKINS CENTRE, EMMA BUZO - MANAGER

Regional opera company makes debut with The Marriage of Figaro

A unique collaboration between up and coming opera singers from Sydney and Brisbane, a creative team in Armidale and The Armidale School brought the TAS Hoskins Centre to life in late January with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

It was the inaugural production of Opera New England, which was formed last year to both perform opera in the region and give young up-and-coming opera singers from both Sydney and Brisbane a critical opportunity to be able to perform in a full, professionally produced opera early in their career.

The project is modeled on the famous Glyndebourne Festival in England, which started in very similar circumstances in 1934 and now presents about 120 performances a year to an audience of around 150,000.

TAS is proud to be a sponsor of Opera New England, with the Hoskins Centre proving the ideal venue for productions including Figaro’s three sell-out performances. In addition to the venue, TAS student Anthony Carlon assisted with the lighting and TAS staff were involved in the production, including Pat Bradley in production, and Geoff Derrin and Alastair Finco in the 11 piece orchestra.

Voice students from the Sydney and Brisbane Conservatoriums of Music learnt their roles in December before the cast came together the week before the production, boarding in Abbott House.

The show marked a special return to his hometown for Queensland Conservatorium student and TAS Old Boy Sam Payne who played Don Curzio (seen below centre). As a student at TAS Sam performed in many musical and dramatic productions, includ-ing a special fundraiser for the Hoskins Centre. He described being able to perform opera with such talented people as ”a real privilege”.

Independent Schools Cricket Festival This year the festival was hosted by Canberra Grammar and saw TAS competing against Saint Ignatius Riverview and Downlands College as well as Grammar. The first match saw TAS up against Downlands College. Batting first TAS compiled a solid score of 210 with strong performance from Ian Ranger (40), Sam Hutton (35) and Hunter Barntett (39). In a close finish Downlands were able to reach the required target in the 49th over with three wickets remaining.

TAS backed up the following day against Saint Ignatius Riverview. Once again batting first TAS achieved another solid score of 218 with Will Frost (70) and Angus Brunsdon (33) leading the way. Unfortunately an outstanding 143 run partnership ended TAS’ hopes of securing a win. Will Lambell once again led the way with the ball taking three wickets.

TAS went into game three against Canberra Grammar desperate for a win. TAS were in trouble at 8 – 119. However that brought Will Lambell and Max Laurie together who were able to rescue the team putting together an 82 run partnership and helped the team reach 214. Highlights with the bat came from Will Frost (43), Max Laurie (39) and Will Lambell (43 not out). TAS were able to snatch a win dismissing Grammar for 186.

Saint Ignatius Riverview were the eventual winners of the Festival, winning all three matches. Huge thanks go to Greg Brunsdon who drove the bus and supported the team enthusiastically throughout the week. It was greatly appreciated by all the boys.

TAS to Tez 2012From the 8 to 17 December 2012, nine students from the Junior School travelled to Osaka, Japan for the biannual TAS/ Tezukayama Gakuin Elementary School exchange. Accompanied by Mr and Mrs Lloyd, Mr Portell, Mrs Dianne Paull and Mrs Sue Byatt, the boys were treated to an array of Japanese hospitality and generosity as they spent the days participating in typical lessons within the school, whilst evenings and the final weekend were spent with host families. For many of the boys, some of whom had never been on a plane, let alone out of the country, the process of engaging with the foreign culture and language was an exciting and eye-opening experience. It was truly wonderful to see just how much these boys were banding together and proving themselves capable of feats previously unthought of. Noticeably, the boys were impressed at the way the Japanese students, teachers and families welcomed us and showed respect to each other, which soon began to rub off.As part of the itinerary, we were treated to guided tours of many of Osaka and Kyoto's famous and world heritage sites, such as Kiyomizu Temple and Osaka Castle, which provided an historical balance to the technologically enthralling Kawasaki Museum in the western port area of Kobe. Many thanks to all whose investments of time, money and resources helped to maintain and strengthen the bonds between our two fantastic schools.

Teachers will explain their expectations and procedures operating within the classroom.

The boys became fully involved in many lessons in the classroomsThe sightseeing was fantastic - here in from of the famous Osaka Castle

These messages are noted prior to school, during the recess and lunch breaks and after 3.30pm. A message left on the Junior School answering ma-chine will enable staff to return your call at a suitable time.

Naming BelongingsParents are encouraged to name all their children’s belongings. Whilst we endeavour to return all lost property it becomes in-credibly difficult if items are not named. A blue lost property box is in the Junior School Homework Centre room and parents are encouraged to check here in the first instance if items are lost. Items returned to the school are often left at the main TAS Recep-tion, please do not forget to check here for any items. Please ensure all second hand clothing is marked with the correct name.

Absences from SchoolParents are asked to advise the School if their child is absent by 9.00am on the day and a note from the parent explaining the absence is required to be sent to the teacher upon the child’s return to school. We suggest that if your child has been ill during the night or in the morning, the best place for them is at home where they will receive the constant care necessary. If a child has vomiting or diarrhea, it is expected they will not return to school for a period of 24 hours for the last symptom.Parents of students who are ill at school, will be contacted so the parents can decide what is best for their child.

Please note that all sports training commences in Week 2 on Monday 4th Feb, from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. Children will have sport on the days they trained in Term 4 2012. The children are to be picked up from the turning circle by 5pm or will be returned to the homework centre to be supervised until collected. The basketball miniball competition should commence on Monday 11th February and will be confirmed by coaches next week. Alligators will commence this Friday 1st February. Tennis competition commences on Friday 8th February. Cricket games will commence on Saturday 9th February.See the draw for the first games on the website.

For the new children who are keen to become involved in summer sport, please see Mrs Kirsty Brunsdon or email her on [email protected] this week. If you are already involved in a town team competition for summer, you may continue with that team for the remainder of the term. Please note that sport is compulsory for Years 3, 4 & 5 but new students may wish to start sport in Term 2. Sports Training Please note that sports’ training is always on regardless of weather conditions for both summer and winter sports. Should the weather be inclement, or scheduled games cancelled, the coaches will still be using this time to coach the children, and the children’s attendance remains compulsory.
