WWW.GLENWOODHIGHSCHOOL.CO.ZA HEADMASTER’S REPORT CRICKET TERM 1 - 2011 A number of people have asked me if the school has slowed down a little this year seeing as we were so busy in 2010 with the Centenary celebrations; I have to honest and say that I think we are even busier this year as new standards have been set for the School and so we are expected to live up to those high expectations in 2011 and beyond. Glenwood’s Matric year of 2010 produced excellent results in the National Senior Certificate and its 100% pass rate set the standard for the Matrics of 2011 to live up to. The Matrics of 2010 achieved a record number of subject distinctions and more than 85% of them achieved a Bachelor’s Pass. Looking at the current Matric group’s Term 1 results, there are reasonable expectations that they will be able to achieve equally impressive results despite being a smaller group by 4 boys. We wish the Staff and boys all of the best as they prepare for the examinations which start early in Term 4. The new Form II boys have fitted in very well and I am pleased with the way in which the older boys have welcomed them to Glenwood and integrated them into the Glenwood Family in such a short space of time. I really do enjoy watching the way in which the lower teams in the U14 age group develop so quickly during the course of the cricket season in Term 1. We set another record with Maritzburg College this term when more than 600 boys played cricket against each other on a single day. Wonderful! Special mention must be made of our 2 SA Schools Cricketers (S. Sunkari and S. Bissoon) and our SA 19 Cricketer (P. Subrayan) whom were selected to their respective teams at the end of 2010 and early 2011; an excellent achievement for them, their families and their coaches. Our Chess Team has continued its impressive run of form this year and remains unbeaten in KZN. The Glenwood Team came 3rd at the annual Grey College Tournament behind Grey and Affies. Mr Pinheiro reminded me the other day that our boys now have 47 different extramural codes to choose from at Glenwood. There is absolutely no excuse for boys to have report cards which reflect ‘ does not participate’ on them. There are numerous festivals for rugby and hockey, particularly, during the course of the short vacation and more than 200 boys will be on various school tours during next week. Please see the web page for fixtures and dates. We start next term with our Rugby fixtures and we will continue until the 6th week of the 3rd Term. Rugby now involves more than 480 boys (more than 30 teams!) and is by far the biggest code within the school. Sometimes I wonder how we manage to cope with limited field space for training; well done to stalwart, Mr D. Munro for his organizational ability. I apologise in advance for not mentioning the myriad activities within our school, but that would take up far too much space. Well done to all boys, Staff, Parents and supporters for their continued interest in our school. Keep your eyes open for exciting developments taking place here next Term! TM KERSHAW HEADMASTER The end of Term One brings a close to cricket for a while at Glenwood High School until we begin again in the Fourth Term. It will not be a total goodbye as our top achievers and players will continue striving for excellence in our cricket academy. The off-season will be used to improve techniques and tactics. We said goodbye to a very enthusiastic 1st XI coach and Master in Charge of cricket, Mr Slabbert, who was married in February and has moved over to the UK. A big loss to Glenwood cricket not just because of his cricketing knowledge, but also his rapport with boys. We look forward to his return to sunny Durban in the future. It was a mixed term of results for Glenwood cricket with room for improvement. The Fourth Term will better these results as coaches and players iron out, and improve on, certain strengths and weaknesses. A definite positive was the weather in that we did not miss any cricket games due to bad weather. We were also able to field 31 teams regularly, a feat that not many of our traditional rivals could follow. Glenwood also strives to field as many cricket teams as possible every weekend of the 1st and 4th Terms. This goal has been hampered by many schools starting rugby fixtures towards the end of the 1st term. This led to an early end to our cricket fixtures and something we will look into as a school. Other positives included top accolades for three of our top players, namely P. Subrayen who made the South African U19 team, as well as S. Bissoon and S. Sunkari who made the South African Schools Cricket team for 2010. Congratulations to these players and we look forward to producing more cricketers of this stature. We were also visited by Haberdashers from the UK who have a long time relationship with our school. We look forward to much more cricket in the Fourth Term and being part of taking Glenwood Cricket from strength to strength. Mr R Webber MIC – Cricket

HEADMASTER’S REPORT CRICKET

TERM 1 - 2011

A number of people have asked me if the school has slowed down a little this year seeing as we were so busy in 2010 with the Centenary celebrations; I have to honest and say that I think we are even busier this year as new standards have been set for the School and so we are expected to live up to those high expectations in 2011 and beyond.

The end of Term One brings a close to cricket for a while at Glenwood High School until we begin again in the Fourth Term.

I find Science Club fun because we do many different Science experiments. My favourite part of Science Club is making things blow up although the overnight excursions are pretty cool too. At last year’s camp we had fun by making bottle rockets, steam cars and playing soccer and touch rugby.Tristan van Niekerk

This term we did some simple experiments using cooking supplies at home. For example, we made our own ice-cream (personally, I thought mine was the best). In future we are planning to go to primary schools and show them awesome experiments. Special thanks to our teachers, Mrs Taylor and Mr Mayo.Matthew Stirling

Science Club is great. Who doesn’t love making things and blowing stuff up? We’ve done so many fun and interesting things over the past term. Ice-cream making, setting off smoke bombs, firing spud cannons and so much more. I also love the excursions. We’ve been to Astonvale Farm and Engen Oil refinery. It’s a fun club and we need more members.Kearn Schafer

I find Science Club enjoyable. Mrs Taylor and Mr Mayo organise really fun and cool experiments, like making potato cannons. We do loads of cool things, for example: steam cars, bottle rockets, smoke bombs and ice-cream.Gabriel Davies

Science Club is awesome. We create interesting experiments, from smoke bombs to steam cars, and get an appreciation for and understanding of the scientific principles behind them.

Last year we visited Ashtonvale Guest Farm and spent an entire weekend doing a variety of activities associated with Science. We looked at water and soil samples under the microscope, and made bottle rockets, some of which flew onto the roof of the conference centre!

We also visited Engen oil refinery and were shown the process of converting crude oil into usable fuels.

I would recommend the Science Club to any boy interested in gaining practical experience in the field of Science.Chris Brunsdon

The annual Grade 8 Orientation Course was once again held during the first week of term at the Bluff Military Base in conjunction with the Natal Mounted Rifles with whom Glenwood has been affiliated since 1936. After the rather challenging task of pitching tents, the boys set about their first task of the day. After 3 days of intense activity, blood, sweat and a few tears, it was time to go back to Glenwood for the Bell – Ringing ceremony. After being officially welcomed in the Glenwood family, the boys went home for a good bath and sleep!

Mr K Jordan

The Prefect Induction ceremony took place this term in the School Hall. This ceremony takes place to allow the Prefects to pledge their loyalty and support to Glenwood. The Prefects pledge in front of the senior boys and the staff, as well as their parents. Each Prefect then signs the pledge in front of everyone, which concludes their induction as a Prefect at Glenwood High School.

All the Prefects proudly did so.

The Annual Junior Prize giving Ceremony was another successful event on the School’s calendar. Old Boy, Mr M. Williamson, was the special guest and shared some wise words with the boys and Parents.

Mrs Barnes and her Teams spent Saturday night last week walking and running in aid of CANSA. The Glenwood Band performed with distinction on the main stage while the Staff and boys walked and ran in the wind and rain.

The theme was Out of Africa.

REPTILE COMMITTEEA small group of Glenwood boys volunteer to care for the School’s exotic pets. This dedicated group of boys maintain the exhibits on a daily basis. They are responsible for the daily cleaning of the enclosures as well as feeding and handling the exotic pets. The boys are very keen to share their knowledge of the animals with anyone willing to learn and take their responsibility of caring for live animals very seriously. The animals are used to teach other boys about nature and conservation and how to care for exotic pets. The exotic pets at the Glenwood Science lab include Columbian Red-tail boas, Burmese Pythons, Leopard Geckos, Honduran Milk Snakes, Bearded Dragons, Curly-Hair Tarantulas and Brown House Snakes.Calvin Mehl

In this first term we have maintained the tradition of getting boys into the water at dawn before school twice a week. It is good to see the new talent which has emerged. Two inter-school competitions have been run, and it has been a close race between ourselves, WBHS and Grosvenor Boys’. Well done to T Hickman for beating current SA champion from the latter in his second heat. Mr G Muller

The Junior team debaters have been the stars of the league round robin stages this year so far, winning every debate and winning a best speaker bonus point on every occasion. B Govender, at time of writing, had finally ended D Watson’s run of winning best speaker by taking his first best speaker point. Watson has been invited to attend the Junior Interleague tournament. The Seniors got off to a bad start, losing to Westville Boys, their nemesis in last year’s final. Things improved after that wakeup call but the Senior team will need to make sure they win their remaining debates if they are to qualify for the quarter finals. Our Form II team has struggled. One positive one can take from their steep learning curve is how these boys are growing in stature and confidence; but if we are to occupy a vanguard role in debating, their speaker base will need to be broadened. Bold Grade 8’s, consider this an invitation to try for the team.Mr G Muller

D Pillay, K Lennon and K Naidoo participated in the Daily News Team Speaking Competition and qualified for to the semi final round, where they and Crawford College lost to the team from Richard’s Bay. We share their disappointment.

Senior Best Speaker Competition: Eight senior boys entered this year, and three of those, K Naidoo, T Phewa and B Jili progressed to the semi final. Naidoo and Jili again progressed to the final, which will have taken place on the 30th of March by the time you read this.

Once again, the first term has ended on a high note for the Glenwood Matric boys. The anxiously awaited Matric Dance was thoroughly enjoyed by all.Our School Hall was transformed into a “5 Star” venue for the Grade 12’s and their beautiful partners. Our theme this year was Out of Africa and this was incorporated into the invitations, draping, table décor and

the meal. The Hall was truly a remarkable sight.Well done to all boys and their partners who opened up the dance floor with their well-acquired waltz and cha-cha skills. They looked most professional. Our school band entertained the crowds at the school entrance. They sounded so regal and looked so smart. All too quickly the evening came to an end which left memory banks overflowing.A special thanks must go to all who helped, especially the team of committed Grade 11 boys. Mrs J Jones

GOLF

Durban Country Club (Beachwood Course) hosted the 2011 Pro Shop High Schools Championship on 18 March 2011. Played initially in fine conditions, a strong South Westerly made conditions tough in the late morning.

Most of KZN’s top schools participated including teams from Durban High School, Glenwood High School, Hilton College, Kearsney College, Maritzburg College, Michaelhouse, Northwood, Suid Natal and Westville Boys High School.

Included in the field were a number of provincial golfers who have made their mark in tournaments around the Country.

The winners on 305 points were Glenwood High School whose team was made up of Thomas Knipe (Captain), Andrew Plint, Calvin Steinhobel, Darren Walker, Seth v.d Heever and Ricky Towell. Second came Westville (312) followed by DHS (316).

This is the first time that Glenwood has been awarded the trophy despite some close calls in the distant past.

The winners will play in the national competition in August 2011 against the winning schools of the other South African provinces.

JUDO

SAILING

The Glenwood 1st Tennis Team have done themselves and their school very proud by each being selected to a KZN Schools’ Team after the recent trials in Pietermaritzburg.

Christopher Walker was selected for the U19 A side, Ronnie Myburgh, Jeandré Hoogenboezem and Sean McIntosh to the U17 A side, Daniel Sibbald to the U17 B side and Musa Mpondi to the U15 A side.

The KZN Inter-Schools Regatta was hosted by the Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay. Due to the unavailability of charter boats and the distance to travel, our presence at the regatta was small. Glenwood was represented by Michael Dickinson and Eli Brophy-Tintinger who both sailed in the Laser 4.7 class. In fact the regatta was one of the smallest in years. Only 9 Lasers, 4 Optimists and 4 Tera dinghies entered the event. The first day was virtually blown out by a strong south-westerly wind, the second day saw some keen racing in good conditions while on the final day the wind virtually died to nothing. Michael Dickinson sailed consistently in the middle of the fleet while Eli Brophy-Tintinger struggled at times. They finished 5th and 7th respectively and accumulated enough combined points to come 3rd overall in the regatta. On Sunday, 20 March 2011, Container World Challenge took part in the Chris Bonnet Memorial Race off Durban. On board were Dylan Stopforth, Bernard Bussy and Mr Pet. After some determined sailing in a very varied fleet of 12 boats, she finished 5th across the line and 3rd on corrected time. The Hunter Nationals were sailed on the Vaal Dam over the same weekend. Old Boy, Byron Watt, fresh from his participation in the Cape to Rio Race, crewed on the winning boat to take the gold medal, beating the other 34 boats which included a number of previous national class champions.
