Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole youWe have a six-month-old puppy, named Z, who came to the family Thanksgivingcelebration. While there, someone asked me what training method I use. I was ata loss in response, since I don’t have a training technique. Not having an answergave me that “less-than” feeling, as it seemed I should have a system for trainingmy dog. Z is 90 pounds already and I want her to be well liked by one and all.Yet, it is not in my nature to enforce an agenda on someone else—human or ani-mal. Because I was taken aback by this question, it stuck with me for days. I thenbegan to recognize that I do have a training approach, I spend tons of quality timewith my animals. Four-legged animals don’t use a vocal vocabulary, they com-municate silently. Essentially, so do we. The words humans vocalize is estimatedto be only 10% of their communication—body language, unspoken intention, andinflection making up the other 90%. Point is, by being together, Z and I havelearned to understand each other beyond words. We both pick up nonverbal cuesfor what is acceptable, without consciously “training” the other. This allows meto speak to her only as a reinforcement of what she already sensed. Although notinfallible, in my opinion, so far this is working for us.

Having begun my spiritual search some time in my teens, I can honestly say it’sbeen my way for the majority of this life. Over the years, I continually asked fora teacher to help me. I have gone to workshops, lectures, and read countless bookslooking for one. Most of which interested and inspired me; none of which felt likethe one teacher I had been looking for. So, I continued my self-study. This con-sists mostly of time alone, or in the company of trees and animals, listening andwriting. While doing so, I have heard many things within. When a thought hasgreat truth, my body has a certain feel about it—a tingling or vibration. It’s asthough my bones know veracity. Even so, I continued to look for someone else toteach me. Only now, after years of searching, do I see that I was given a teacherthe moment I asked for one. That teacher was me.

These two stories may seem unrelated. Yet, both are examples of finding, claimingand trusting in my own nature. I have a rich inner life. Even so, at times I search out-wardly for answers—turning to people I love, books or teachers to show me the way.It turns out that their ideas are only helpful tools to use in finding my own path. Thisis true for all of us, even those who find one method orteacher to follow. We have reached the end of 2012, atime when prophecies have predicted great transition. The vital and simple question is; do you listen to andalso follow your inner rhythm and teacher? If not, decide what it would take to change that and do it.

As breast cancer science evolves so should your wellnessstrategy. Mammography has been the Gold Standard for25 years for breast cancer screening, but many women

are opting for Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, aka DITI orthermography, that is non-invasive, radiation-free and painless. The promising aspect of thermography is to detect physiologicalchanges in the body that are produced by developing pathologyor disease, in some cases up to 10 years prior to identification ona mammogram.

In recent years, mammography has been controversial and comeinto question, as have other medical devices that emit ionizingradiation. It is well known that radiation is cumulative and car-ries health risks.

In November 2009, the United States Preventative Services TaskForce said it recommended that women begin regular mammo-grams at 50 instead of 40 and that mammograms are neededevery two years instead of annually between the ages of 50 and74. The reason the United States Preventative Services TaskForce reversed its aggressive mammogram guidelines wasbecause of the exposure to radiation. The National CancerInstitute states “any level of radiation can cause cancer…it isironic that ionizing radiation is our best screening tool now for50 years.”

A critical difference between thermography versus mammogra-phy is the ability to detect problems early enough to use preven-tive measures, rather than detecting disease at a stage wheretreatment is imminently required. Developing breast cancer canbe detected before it has the density to be seen on a radiograph. As the growing tumor develops a renegade blood supply througha process called angioneogenesis, the increase in heat can beidentified on a thermal image and compared to the oppositebreast. Inflammation created in the surrounding tissues andlymph nodes is also easily identified on highly sensitive medicalgrade cameras.

A study conducted by Dr. William Hobbins at the University ofWisconsin Medical Center concluded that thermography had 10times the yield as compared to family history. Abnormal findingson a thermogram, not correlated by mammography was followedfor many years utilizing thermography for changes associatedwith cancer development. In many cases, mammography andresulting biopsy was positive, as much as 8-10 years later in theexact area the thermogram predicted that a cancer might be present.

In a 2008, The American Society of Breast Surgeons performeda study at NY Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell, finding themo-graphic interpretations identified 58 correctly of 60 malignan-cies, correlating to a 97% accuracy. The conclusion was DITI is

a valuable adjunct to mam-mograms and ultrasound par-ticularly with women withdense breast parenchyma.

Thermography can be usedby women of all anatomies, sizes and ages, even preg-nant and women nursing. It’s not modified by breastdensity and is ideal forwomen who have had cos-metic or reconstructive sur-gery. As most adult femalesdo not have a mammogramuntil age 40, there is a critical time period from age 20 to 39 thatthermography could be beneficial. Thermography is a particular-ly good choice for younger breasts, which tend to be denser. Itdoesn't identify fibrocystic tissue, breast implants or scars asneeding further investigation. It's also good at detecting changesin the cells in the armpit area, an area that mammography isn’talways good at screening.

Dr.Christiane Northrup, who endorses thermography explains,“Perhaps even more exciting is that a thermogram can help awoman diagnosed with ductal carconoma in situ (DCIS) decide, along with her health practitioners, whether she requires aggres-sive or conservative treatment. If you’ve ever had an unneces-sary biopsy or been scared by a false positive result on a mam-mogram, please consider getting a thermogram and using it in

conjunction with the mam-mogram to figure our yourtreatment options.”

Thermography doesn’treplace mammography but isan additional tool availableto women. Have you ever felt that you were doing all the right thingsand getting all the wrong results? I have felt this often inmy life.

For many years, I searched to find and eliminate the cause of myunhappiness. I finally found those answers during the first class ofthe Inca Medicine Wheel in September, 2010. I was surprised todiscover the negative core beliefs that had been hidden deep in mysubconscious keeping me stuck in the rut of suffering and block-ing my path to wholeness and happiness.

Our negative beliefs attract to us the people and situations thatprove them right. Subsequently, even though we do all the rightthings our finances dwindle, our relationships fail and we repeatthe same patterns again and again. To heal we must clear theimprint of these negative beliefs from our luminous energy field.Only then can we move forward in life with ease and grace.

I have been a professional energy practitioner for over 20 years.Yet, during this program I learned new techniques to clear the lumi-nous energy field more profoundly and powerfully than ever before.

The core shamanic practice is the illumination which is taught in theSouth class. Our luminous energy field informs us and predisposesus to certain kinds of situations, relationships, recurring patternsand behaviors. It stores imprints of our personal, ancestral, karmicmemories, traumas and illnesses. It downloads information to ourenergy centers and into our central nervous system. The illumina-tion process clears the energy field so that we no longer source fromthe old patterns and behaviors. It is like a spring cleaning!

Soul retrieval is taught in the North class. Soul retrieval recapturesthose lost soul parts that fragmented off, integrating them backinto our energy field and our awareness. This re-balances ourenergies and allows us to experience the gifts of our life.

The Extraction process is taught in the West class. This processinvolves removing heavy energies that have become crystallizedand embedded into the luminous energy field. An Illumination isperformed afterwards to ensure that similar energies are not drawninto the luminous energy field again.

Despachos are prayer bundles that help us to energetically releasewhat no longer serves us, while at the same time acting as a mag-net attracting to us what does serve. They are created with inten-tion and burned during sacred fire ceremony.

Through this work, my life began shifting immediately and con-tinues to evolve and transform in ways I never could havedreamed. I learned to get off the triangle of suffering and stopplaying the parts of victim, perpetrator or rescuer. What once trig-gered me and caused havoc in my life no longer does. I learnedthat there are so many more dimensions that affect this lifetimeand I learned how to heal my personal past, ancestral influences, past lives and more.

As I progressed around the medicine wheel I moved into a placeof allowing. In this new place of allowing I fully became co-cre-ator of my world. I am now able to focus on and create what Idesire with ease and grace. Manifesting has become so fast that allI need to do is think of something and it happens. Of course, thiscould only happen once I released those negative patterns andinfluences.

This is the most powerful and transformative program I have evertaught. I invite you to join me to experience your own epic jour-ney of transformation through the Inca Medicine Wheel.

Through the practices of the Four Directions of the Inca MedicineWheel you can transform your life. Through these practices youcan learn to recognize and become grateful for the gift in everyexperience, every situation and every person in your life. You canexperience inner peace, happiness and contentment. You can learnto source from the Divine Spirit and bring to you all that youdesire with ease and grace.

Wishing you an abundance of all good things.

Joints, especially knees and hips put up with tremendousweight bearing stress and repetitive movements; their designis a marvel of efficiency and durability.

Nevertheless, the environment inside a joint capsule is precari-ous. Any imbalance can have a cumulative impact. Once the pathtoward arthritis has begun, it may be possible to stop it, butcapacity for regeneration is limited at best.

Any muscles that cross a stiff, painful and constantly aggravatedjoint tend to tighten up. That is what muscles do when they are inareas of constant pain. They may also develop some trigger pointsin the process, because they will not get to relax as long as thatjoint is in pain. The tension they cause compress the joint, mak-ing it even more painful, which reinforces the spasm, and so on.

Eventually the person with arthritis will want to stop using theinjured joint because it hurts so much. Lack of use leads to atro-phy; the wasting away of the joint structure and the tissues thatsurround it. The nearby muscles then get weaker, the synovialmembranes stop functioning, and the joint fluid dries up.

Many changes in the body begin the process of joint degenera-tion. When the ligaments that surround joints get chronically

loose, the joint can become unstable, raising the risk of arthritis.Hippocrates said in 460 BC that “Rubbing can bind a joint thatis too loose or loosen a joint that is too tight”. Repetitive pound-ing stress, such as running or jumping with inadequate support, can also open the door to problems.

Hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies, includinginadequate calcium metabolism, may compromise the health ofjoint structures. Being overweight adds stress to knees and hips.Age itself changes the quality of articular cartilage, making itdrier and more prone to injury. Osteoarthritis can be completelydebilitating when it occurs at the hip or knee because the painand inflammation are badly exacerbated by walking.

Treatment options for osteoarthritis have improved considerablyin recent years. The goals of treatment are to reduce pain andinflammation and to limit or reverse the damage incurred in thejoint structures. These goals are accomplished in a number ofdifferent ways, depending on how advanced the condition is.

A recently developed variety of painkillers called Cox-2inhibitors work to limit the action of an enzyme associated withpain and inflammatory response. The book, Beyond Aspirin, which is a comprehensive review of natural approaches toinflammatory disorders is recommended.

If you have been diagnosed with Arthritis it is recommended thatyou exercise within pain tolerance to achieve 3 goals; improve andmaintain healthy range of motion, increase stamina and lose weight, and improve the strength of muscles surrounding the affected joints.

Nutrition should also be evaluated; inflammatory foods such wheat, dairy and sugar should be limited to decrease the amount of inflam-mation in the body. When there is excess inflammation, it may trav-el to joints and contribute to pain and stiffness. A consultation witha nutritionist or Naturopathic Doctor would be most beneficial.

Massage can help to reduce pain through release of the musclessurrounding the affected joints and to maintain range of motionthrough gentle stretching and passive movement. It can alsoaddress issues of muscle tightness and imbalance, as well as stiff-ness and chronic pain experienced in muscle-tendon units thatcross the knee joint. If a treatment strategy is developed to retrainthe knee extensors to track the patella appropriately over the joint, massage may be a useful part of an effort to slow or stop perma-nent cartilage damage. Passive movement may re-educate thejoint as to how much more freely it can move, as well as todemonstrate to the brain the diminished levels of discomfort.

Arthritis - Ways to Ease this Disease1Drink plenty of water - Nourishing the fluid body which is

85% of what is inside of us frequently is very important.

2Exercise - Find movement that you love to do and then find thetime to do it regularly.

3Sleep - Get enough sleep each night. Have a regular scheduleand try to get 7-8 hours a night.

4Mattress and pillow - Invest in both for the best night’s sleeppossible.

5Diet - Pay attention to what you eat. Being overweight can be anextra stress on your weight bearing joints especially hips and knees.

6Breathing - Deep breathing is very beneficial for moving thefluids in the body, fluid movement helps all the joints to work

better.

7Ergonomics - Using the best possible body mechanics whenyou are working in the kitchen, office, outside.

8 Joint Protection - Find ways to go easy on your body whenusing specific joints in your body. For example when you move

from sitting to standing or when you carry heavy loads.

9Energy Conservation - Avoid being fatigued. Know your limits!

10Body Work - Find what feels good and get some regularly.Types of bodywork that can be beneficial for Arthritis are cran-

iosacral therapy, massage, chiropractic, myofascial release and Reiki.

Sugar’s bad reputation is relatively old news for most of usin the integrative medicine community. But, thankfully, sugar’s notoriety has finally made the front pages.

The story now being highlighted is one of sugar unleashed fromit’s natural package–fruit, which contains helpful attendant fiberand micronutrients. In the hands of the food industry sugar, largely in the form of fructose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)or sucrose (table sugar, which is equal parts fructose and glu-cose) is transformed into a highly addictive, feel-good substancethat is making us sick. And, I don’t just mean dental cavities anddiabetes.

According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s April 1, 2012 60 Minutes inter-view of three scientists, sugar is a major driver in the develop-

ment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, and high blood pressure. It is also a growth fac-tor in at least one third of cancers. Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatricendocrinologist from the University of California, SanFrancisco, and star of the hit YouTube video, “Sugar: the BitterTruth”, declares that the “sweet and irresistible” fructose is toxic.

Dr. Lustig surmises that evolution embedded the propensity tolike sweet foods in us as a way to signal that fruit was a safe anduseful food. It represents delicious energy, packed with usefulmicronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) wrapped up infiber that slows the absorption of the fructose. In general, youcan only eat so much whole fruit, naturally limiting your intakeof nature’s natural source of sugar. With food processing overthe centuries, we developed favorite sugar-laden treats, that wegenerally understood required modified intake. With the adventof the anti-fat movement, however, the food industry needed toreplace the taste-bud satisfying fat with something; hence, the1970’s surge in sugar intake. Leading the charge is the manufac-tured HFCS found in many processed foods, including the usualsuspects, such as sweetened beverages and desserts, but also inproducts such as bread, peanut butter and ketchup. On average,Americans consume 130 pounds of sugar per person per year. That is one third of a pound per day. Dr. Lustig has declared thisa Public Health Crisis.

Research conducted by Kimber Stanhope, a nutritional biologistfrom UC Davis, demonstrates that the message carried by addedsugars, in this case HFCS, is harmful. In other words, “a calorieis not just a calorie.” According to Stanhope’s findings, withintwo weeks of regular consumption of 25% of their calories in the

form of a HFCS-containing beverage, young healthy test sub-jects demonstrated increases in factors that promote the risk ofheart disease, including the atherosclerosis generating small, dense LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Other researchers aredemonstrating how fructose is converted into fat for storage inthe liver, and how, if left unchecked, it quickly translates intodangerous fat that surrounds the visceral (internal) organs (seelinks below). Dr. Gupta’s exposé also interviewed LewisCantley, Harvard Professor, and head of Beth Israel DeaconessCancer Center. His research highlights how the spike in insulinfollowing sugar consumption will stimulate certain cancer cellsto grow. He states that one third of cancers (including breast andprostate) have extra insulin receptors that “hijack the flow of glu-cose” in the blood stream in order to promote their growth.

The final scientist interviewed by Dr. Gupta is Eric Stice, a neu-roscientist at the Oregon Research Institute. He equates theresponse of the brain to sugar with that of drugs, such as cocaine.Brain MRI scans demonstrate that the same reward centers in thebrain that engage with drug and alcohol use, those that respondwith a release of dopamine–a “feel good” neurotransmitter, alsolight up when sugar is ingested. This results in an euphoriceffect. Many of us respond to this effect by increasing our con-sumption of sugar. As with other drugs, tolerance ensues, result-ing in an increased need to consume more sugar to achieve thesame result.

Research also demonstrates that our brains rebel when presentedwith artificial sweeteners. It expects to receive something sweetin return for the stimulus provided by the artificial sweetener, and as a consequence, many people just eat more “real” sugarlater. The lesson is there are no short-cuts. The best advice is tosignificantly reduce, if not eliminate, sugar intake fromprocessed foods, and return to the largely whole foods diets ofour ancestors. When consuming a manufactured, boxed andpackaged product, be sure to carefully read labels. This includesfoods that are often thought of as healthy, such as yogurt, smoothies, energy bars, and of course, juices.

In addition, be aware of the sugar content of homemade andrestaurant dishes. Dr. Lustig has coauthored an American HeartAssociation report recommending that “men should consume nomore than 150 calories of added sugars a day. And women, just100 calories. That’s less than the amount in just one can of soda.”

And I leave you on this note: as mentioned, there is concern thatpersistently elevated blood “non-diabetic” glucose levels and aftermeal glucose spikes contribute to many of the chronic diseases ofWestern civilization. In addition to those detailed in the 60 Minutesreport, other researchers are concerned about the link of excessivesugar intake to Alzheimer’s (now being called Type III diabetes bymany in the field), kidney disease, pancreatic dysfunction, anddevelopment of diabetic complications (vision and nerve dysfunc-tion), even before meeting the official criteria for the diagnosis ofdiabetes. Currently, a diagnosis of diabetes is not made until anindividual demonstrates fasting blood sugar levels over 125 mg/dL.An individual is “prediabetic” with blood sugar levels of 100-125mg/dL. Optimal fasting blood sugar levels, though, are actually inthe 70-85 mg/dL range. In addition, the traditional fasting bloodsugar test does not identify the problem of after-meal blood glucosespikes. To optimize your health it is important that you work toeliminate those spikes, and that you aim for a fasting blood sugargoal below 86 mg/dL. Be well. I suggest you also view these short-related out take videos from the 60 Minutes program:

One way for you to begin to understand how to use an essentialoil is to place a closed bottle in your right hand. How do youfeel? If you feel tired, lethargic of uncomfortable please switchhands. If you still feel the same, please place the oil 3’ awayfrom you. How do you feel? If you feel better please take threedeep slow breaths in through your nose and out through yourmouth. How do you feel? If you feel even better please try hold-ing the closed oil bottle in your right hand again. If you feel evenbetter or no different, please place the closed oil bottle in yourright pocket. Placing an oil in your pocket or purse you carrymaintains the improvements ALL DAY!

If you feel worse again, please continue to keep the oil at least3’ away from you for 24-48 hours. You can try holding it in yourright hand again. Our fascia is connective tissue deep to our skin that pro-vides support and movement for nerves, organs, bloodvessels and muscles. It tightens to protect injuries, and

can become restricted if there is a history of trauma, chronicpain, autoimmune conditions or lack of physical activity. Arestriction differs from tightness in that there is NO movement inthe restricted area. When fascia tightens it still allows movement;restrictions immobilize. When our fascia is free of tightness andrestrictions we can experience elimination of pain, ease of move-ment and more energy.

Holistic Fascial Integration provides a customized session that isbased on our goals, history of injury, past surgeries and the activ-ities most frequently performed. Therapy is performed lying, standing or while engaging in movements related to activities ofdaily living or sport. It can be gentle, aggressive, subtle or obvi-ous. There are many techniques used to address tightness andrestrictions in the fascia. Holistic Fascial Integration “shapes”the fascia and integrates it into our lives.

What is “Shaping the Fascia”?“Shaping the fascia” moves the fascia with our hands into newpositions for optimal support and functioning. The fascia is liter-ally “shaped” based on what support and improvement in func-tioning is needed. Holistic Fascial Integration shapes the fasciaONLY in directions that help eliminate tightness and restrictions.

Our fascia can be “shaped” to support any activity or sport wepractice. Our fascia is like our shadow, it mirrors our everymovement. The more we engage in the same activity or sport, thestronger our fascia becomes during those specific movements. Ifwe play a musical instrument, our fascia becomes stronger themore we practice. As a result we experience less fatigue and canplay longer with less effort.

Fascia is organized in lines that run in every direction. The “lines”are connected to each other like a spider web. “Shaping” the fas-cial lines that cover our bodies changes the dynamics of the web.If one strand of the web is tight or restricted the entire web loses

its integrity. Fascia needs freedom! Tightness and restrictionsinhibit optimal functioning. “Shaping” the fascial lines for freedomvaries based on individual differences. No two people have identi-cal fascial lines. THEREFORE, IT IS CRITICAL THAT EVERY-ONE’S FASCIAL LINES ARE SHAPED JUST FOR THEM.

How is Our Fascia “Shaped”?Holistic Fascial Integration identifies tightness and restrictions inthe fascia prior to shaping. The fascia is shaped by a therapist’shands. Each shaping technique used provides a different effect.Depending on the location of the tightness or restriction the thera-pist will use a certain technique. Where the fascia covers the handsand feet can require fast hand movements to warm and shape thefascia. Along the spine a therapist’s hands can sink their hands intothe fascia and shape it by pulling it in certain directions.

The organization of our lines of fascia determines shaping tech-niques as well. Special care is taken to be sure to identify wherespecifically the tightness or restriction is located. If there is arestriction close to the top of the right shoulder the therapist mayrub her hands together until heat is felt, and place them over therestriction for 30-seconds. This technique can eliminate the restric-tion. If a line of fascia covers the top of the right foot, right leg, torso and left shoulder, A THERAPIST WILL SHAPE THEENTIRE FASCIAL LINE. This is to ensure no tightness or restric-tion is affecting discomfort in any area the fascial line covers.

How Can Shaping Our Fascia Help UsOptimize Recovery?Whether we are recovering from an acute or chronic injury shaping our fascia allows us to feel better faster. Shaping the fascia helps optimize recovery by:

• Increasing circulation to injured area.• Stabilizing unstable joints as in an ankle sprain or shoulder

dislocation.• Integrating ideal functioning of injured area- helping to re-

establish norma functioning of TMJ• Creating more support and protection to allow injured area to

be used without concern.

Fractures, whiplash, head trauma, severe sprains and torn tendonsor muscles can recover faster when the fascia is shaped.

How Can Shaping Our Fascia Improve Performance?Sport performance is improved by shaping the fascia to providemore strength, power and efficiency of movement. When a line offascia is free of tightness or restriction is becomes stronger, andstores and releases kinetic energy more effectively. For example, tremendous amounts of kinetic energy move through our bodieswhen we sprint. If our fascia is free from tightness and restrictions

we need less effort to run fast. We are able to generate more forcewith ease. The same freedom and ease can be experienced throw-ing a ball, swinging a golf club or even avoiding punches andkicks. Our fascia is always supporting the movements we per-form. The more frequently we perform a certain movement, thestronger our fascia becomes in supporting that movement.Throwing a baseball or swinging a golf club are movements thatour fascia can provide more consistency and efficiency.

Our fascia can be shaped to strengthen sport specific movements.A therapist can shape the fascial lines that run across the throwingarm, legs and torso to provide more capacity to store and releasekinetic energy. This will cause more velocity, control and protec-tion for the pitcher’s throwing arm. Swinging a golf club is slight-ly different. A therapist can shape the lines of fascia that cover theshoulders, neck, legs and torso to produce more consistency, velocity and control. Running faster, jumping higher, throwingharder or avoiding punches and kicks requires our fascia to be freeof tightness and restrictions. Shaping the fascia specific to anysport provides:

• Less risk of injury.• Greater expression of strength or power.• Faster recovery from training sessions and practices.• Greater efficiency running, skating, throwing, swinging, etc.• More comfort when training or practicing at a high intensity.

Shaping our fascia enables any athlete to compete with less effortand greater success.

Integrating Our Body, Mind and SpiritShaping the fascia helps to integrate our body, mind and spirit. Thishappens through experiencing more comfort. When we becomecomfortable in our bodies we can relax. Our minds calm, slow andwe become more present and focused. As we relax our connectionto our body becomes more sensitive. We can sense our body’sneeds for water, food, rest and movement. Feeling relaxed alsohelps us to be more creative at work or play. Creativity engages ourspiritual nature. It helps us feel empowered and expressive.Spirituality or our connection to creativity, nature and each other isintegrated into our body and mind when we are at ease.

Holistic Fascial Integration helps to relax our body, mind and engageour spirit by eliminating tightness and restrictions in our fascia. com-fort, more energy, efficiency of movement, creativity, mental focusand peace can be experienced. Our body, mind and spirit integratesas we relax our bodies.

There’s been a lot of attack recently on “health foods”, evenregarding the “pure stuff”. In fact, a study discountingorganic food benefits recently went viral over the internet.

As expected, this caused quite a controversy.

The study reported that their findings demonstrated the non-existenceof a significant difference between the nutrient content of organicfoods and conventional products. A backlash of various expertspointing to some weakness in the study’s design soon followed.

Below lists a summary of the main issues in assessing healthcontent of organic foods based on this one study which only usedone measure:

Issue 1:Taking one specific phytonutrient (plant constituents found to bebeneficial in modulating health), mineral, or vitamin in isolationdoesn’t give a comprehensive picture of the full healing proper-ties of the plant.

This is akin to assessing the health of your car by only assessingthe amount of gas by looking at the fuel gauge. Sure, you needgas to run the car, but the engine, battery, and other componentsmust be in working order to utilize the gas to run the car safely!

Issue 2:In the modern era of plant manipulation, GMOs, and powerplants, the confounding factor of conventional plants raised in

“artificially mineral rich soil” to increase its levels in a com-parison analysis, may not prove to be accurate.

I prefer to think that nature’s design of the ratio of specific nutri-ents is more intelligent than vegetables manipulated to be artifi-cial mineral boosters.

This was evident with the wide-spread press on the dangers of“folic acid” a few years back. Various studies found that thewrong kind of this essential vitamin in our enriched food supplycould prove to be more toxic than a deficiency in it. This is nottrue when supplementing with the right form and other synergis-tic components of natural folic acid!

This is why assessing individualized need and knowing yoursource quality of supplements is vital!

Issue 3:Various studies have shown that organic foods ARE more nutritious.

A 2010 article from PLoS spent two years comparing the nutri-ent content of two plants using a cross-sectional comparison. Inother words, this study was well designed comparing the correctspecies of plants.

An abundance of further references and scientific journalsreporting the benefit of organics can be found at the OrganicTrade Association Website.

What’s Up with Organic Foods?Individualized Nutrition for the Complex Person

Page 26: Healing Springs Journal Dec 12-Jan 13

26 Healing Springs I #65 • December, 2012—January, 2013

Issue 4: We are still asking the wrong question.

Ok, let’s say that with some foods, the nutrient content is similaror less in organic foods. Even if this were the case, it doesn’t meanthat they are equally healthy. As mentioned, we are only analyz-ing one measure of health (phytonutrient, mineral or vitamin con-tent) and assuming that everyone needs that specific nutrient.

To be truly healthy, we need to consider not just what we are eat-ing in quantity, but quality and if it’s what our individual bodyneeds to flourish!

An article in Atlantic put this short-sighted look into question:

In a widely publicized and discussed analysis of morethan 200 studies comparing organic to regular food prod-ucts, researchers have found that organics don’t havemore vitamins or minerals (with the lone exception ofphosphorus, which we all get in sufficient amounts any-way). Nor do they have an appreciable effect when itcomes to heading off food-borne illness, although thegerms found in conventional meat do have a higherchance of being drug-resistant (more on that in a bit).

That we needed a study to understand how nutritionallysimilar organic foods are to non-organics is a perfect exam-ple of the way we’ve lost sight of what the term reallymeans. It’s worth keeping in mind that organic refers onlyto a particular method of production; while switching toorganic foods can be good for you insofar as doing so helpsyou avoid nasty things like chemicals and additives, there’snothing in the organic foods themselves that gives them aninherent nutritional advantage over non-organics. In otherwords, it’s not wrong to say organic food is “healthier”than non-organics. It’s just unrealistic to think that yourorganic diet is slowly turning you into Clark Kent.

Issue 5:The point of organic, beyond environmental, is that by choosingorganic you are saying no to GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, sewage sludge, antibiotics and other things that go bump in thenight into your food supply. The fact that organic foods haveless residue can’t be argued. Furthermore, the fact that peoplealready have enough chemicals to deal with just walking aroundthis planet can’t be denied!

By picking organic whole foods and passing up the processedfoods, your digestive track has a free road to absorb the whole arrayof phytonutrients present in happy plants without major competi-tion of performing biotransformation of toxins at the same time.

So, why is Natural and Organic under such an attack? I cameacross an article that reminded me of the book, “Anti-VitaminBaloney”. There are so many headlines about anti-foods, anti-vitamin, anti-health, yet many aren’t focusing on the efficacy

studies of common drug treatments or even improperly pre-scribed supplements.

Dr. Goldman commented in a recent issue of Holistic Primary Care:

Amid the recent clamor over metanalyses suggesting thatorganic veggies are no more nutritious than conventional, and that omega-3?s may not reduce heart disease mortal-ity, another important metanalysis got totally overlooked:the one showing that anti-hypertensive drugs are largelyineffective in people with Stage 1 hypertension.

I’m not saying that drugs aren’t needed at times, especially forlife-threatening high blood pressure readings. I am saying that anattack on organic foods having more media coverage than thebillions of dollars spent on ineffective treatments must be noted.

Therefore, maybe the reason we are seeking to “superfood” ourdiet with organic isn’t because we need mega doses of one spe-cific nutrient, but because we can’t argue that with food, syner-gism of less toxins and residues, more bioavailable and naturalforms of nutrients, and quality does fit-all. With drugs, supple-ments, and health care, as noted above, this is not the case.

Do any of you use your skills in treating animals? What cantreat, which skill do you use, how effective are you, and what isthe success rate in treating animals?

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St ClairActually all of my skills are used in treating animals, just not byme. Many people have heard of the use of acupuncture for ani-mals and I get asked this question all the time. I don't have timeto treat animals and my office isn't set up for them so I leave itto the professional veterinarians that specialize in it.

I was at my dentist recently and we were talking about health. Hementioned to his assistant that I was an acupuncturist and shesaid,”Oh, I completely believe in acupuncture, we had it done formy horse and now she’s a completely new horse!” My dentist, also a long time friend and a wise ass said, “Did you give it a newname?”

Some Western Professionals have the false assumption thatacupuncture only works because of a placebo effect. That is thepatient wants it to work and therefore it does. Even if that is true

(sounds pretty powerful to me), I can guarantee you a cat does-n't go to the vet and think, “Oh boy, time for my acupunctureagain, I hope this works.”

Some very real things happen with acupuncture; includingincreasing circulation, reducing inflammation, stimulating theimmune system, balancing hormones and releasing endorphinswhich reduce pain and calm anxiety. If this works with peoplewhy wouldn't it work with animals? (Many people don't realizethat many medicines before they are used on people are firstapproved for veterinary use.)

At 12 years old, Dori, my beloved husky mix whom I rescued inAlaska when she was three months old, began to limp. I startedtreating her and every treatment she would be good for a monthor two. At 14, about the upper age for that breed, she had a strokeand I thought that was the end. I kept needling her though andshe managed to limp along to a full, happy life of almost 17 withno drug or surgical interventions.

In addition to acupuncture there are Chinese herbs designedspecifically for animals. I recommend Dr. Ron Scharf atwww.animalhospitalniskayuna.com for all your veterinarianneeds. I can personally attest to his experience with acupuncture(over 20 years) and his dedication to integrating alternative ther-apies into his practice. He can be reached at 518-785-9731.

minds and experiences of people who might otherwise look scep-tically upon a lot of alternative therapies.

All of the modalities that I use, save hypnosis, can be used onanimals. And there can be no denying the effectiveness of it.Not unlike witnessing the effect on an infant, or child.

I personally do not apply jin shin jyutsu, or zero balancing to ani-mals, but I have spoken to practitioners who have and they getrepeat calls, which says that the owner witnessed the changes, even if he couldn't understand it.

I have used homeopathy for animals over a large part of my yearsas a working homeopath. Mostly, it has been for dogs and cats, but I once suggested a remedy for a fish that appeared to itsowner to be sick. The pellet was dropped into the water, andwithin moments, the fish revived and its behavior returned tonormal.

Owners of animals know and attribute very complex personalitytraits to their animals, and it is an aspect of what is taken intoaccount when using a homeopathic remedy. The same is done inthe case of infants and children.

A homeopath will first gather the physical symptoms, the effectsof an imbalance upon energy and eating habits. Then we gatherthe general nature of the animal, and how that has changed, if atall. Every small detail is important, even the breed of the dog orcat. I have been blessed to have treated many rescued grey-hounds over the years, and gotten to know the breed. It makes iteasier for me to assess what needs to be treated, as well as thehistory which is often related to the later imbalances that presentwhen I am consulted.

Remedies are easily given, whether in the water bowl, or

wrapped in a treat. It has been my experience, as well, that theanimals seem to sense when the remedy is right or not. If dis-solved in their water, and it's not correct, they won't drink it, if itis, they drink it to their heart's content.

I am not an animal owner, but I love to be able to relate to themin these ways. Homeopathy is so simple to use for them and sosafe. There are even small books on the homeopathic treatmentof dogs and cats, which could be applied to any other animal, eg.horses, cows, birds, etc.

Jerome Pindell uses homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shin jyutsu in acomprehensive practice in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NewYork City. He can reached at 518-374-5492 or through his site:www.jeromepindell.com. He is also a self published poet whosebook: 'Training Tracks, poems by implosion' can be purchasedthrough Amazon.

Chiropractor; Lynn AllisonIn NYS chiropractors are not licensed to treat animals. Theymust have a veterinarian license also. Yet, vets seem to be okaywith doing chiropractic on animals without a chiropracticlicense. In this area, vets are very protective of this and havebeen known to report chiropractors who have worked on ani-mals.

I do work on my own animals (dog and cats) with adjustments, massage and light therapy and have good results. Animals likechildren respond quickly to care so less is more. I have helpedjoint issues, digestive issues and attitude issues.

Lynn Allison, DC uses a combination of Craniosacral therapy, nutrtition consultation, kinesiology and chiropractic in her 20 yearpractice in the Capital Region. She has a website www.knotdr.infoand can be contacted at [email protected] or 518-268-9542.

Qi Gong is a meditative movement practice originating inancient China thousands of years ago. An offspring of QiGong, Tai Chi, is better known in the western world and

in actuality the practices are so similar that the novice may not beable to tell them apart.

The ultimate goal of both Qi Gong and Tai Chi is to access a stateof physical, mental, and spiritual coherence; the Qi Gong state. This experience of complete coherence signals a point of optimalphysical functioning, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. As long term seated meditators we were able to attain periodiclevels of calmness within ourselves; however, continued to strug-gle, as many do, with incessant streams of thoughts. With QiGong we learned to take the practice “off of the cushion” so tospeak, engendering much more than a state of deep relaxation butone of both physiological optimization and a profound sense ofbelonging in the natural world.

Qi Gong teaches us to access the Qi Gong state not only duringformal practice but more importantly as a function of daily life.We all recognize that waking life includes many challenges thatresult in anxiety and emotional stress. Our brains are largelyresponsible for creating these perceptual imbalances yet ironical-ly the brain has no direct contact with the outside world. Ourbrains are our body’s CEOs… in the dark.

The brain is like a CEO who sits alone in her office. There are nowindows, but billions of doors. Each minute of the day the doorsopen and close thousands of times as assistants come in to givetheir reports. The CEO never leaves the office and does not see theinter-workings of this large and complex company that she is run-ning. She must use the information the assistants have gathered inorder to make all her decisions. Sometimes the CEOs assistantscome bursting in, going ballistic about some emergency situationthat is happening. Simultaneously, other assistants also enter andgive their versions, from their department’s perspective, on theseverity and details of the events taking place. The CEO analyzesall the information that she is given and makes decisions basedsolely and exclusively on what she has heard and never on whatshe sees for herself.

Every moment of the day our brains receive information. Throughour experiences we sense what is going on around us and data is

sent to the brain for analysis. Since the brain needs to make all ofit’s decisions based on this information with which it has never hadfirst hand experiences, it is reasonable to conclude that it will attendto and deal with the most critical information first. If the brain con-sistently receives information that our life experiences are emer-gent, then the brain must adapt to a constant state of bombardmentvia excitatory information from its “assistants” often resulting in astate of high alert. This is exhausting! Imagine yourself sitting in anoffice where people are constantly running in exclaiming, “Oh NO!What’s happening is so horrible!” Of course the brain is going tosend out all the reinforcements the body needs to deal with thisstressful stimuli, which ironically results in more stress.

Now, we have the unique ability to choose what information weare going to send to the CEO in the dark, our brains. What ifinstead of messages of impending danger, we were to send mes-sages of calm and that even though things aren’t going the way wewould like, we can handle it. How would the CEO react? She maynot be so reactive or stressed.

Being able to send such messages to our brain, that everything isgoing to be alright in the face of stress, requires that we have atleast experienced what calm feels like in our bodies. The morepractice we have at reaching that feeling within ourselves, the eas-ier it becomes to achieve it again when we need it the most.Practicing Qi Gong teaches us to sense and direct vital energy byfocusing on body, breath, and mind.

Our breath follows our bodies and our minds follow our breath. When these three are aligned in the Qi Gong state, our bodies pro-duce what the Chinese call an elixir, what Westerners might callthe relaxation response and what we call just plain feeling good. When our bodies are used to feeling good, we are more readilyable to return to that state, anytime, all the time and specificallywhen we are under stress. Calling upon the Qi Gong state at anymoment in our lives gives us powerful options for choosing calmand peaceful reactions. In effect, we are choosing to say to theCEO in the dark, “Yep. Things are pretty stressful right now… buthey… look at me… I’m relaxed. We’re going to be just fine.”
