Inside these pages you will find important information on a variety of programs we offer at Putnam Hospital Center including health screenings, seminars, support groups, childbirth classes and cancer programs. There is also information on volunteer opportunities that may be of interest to you.

At Putnam Hospital Center, your health is our top priority and we are here to assist you in times of need. These programs are meant to maintain and improve your health and complement the existing providers you rely on. Our mission is to prevent as well as treat disease.

Medication Take BackDon’t flush your unused medication, bring it to us! Dispose of prescription medication, over-the-counter medication and pet medication. If possible, please keep all medication in its original packaging. We are not able to accept syringes, lancets or sharps of any kind.

Egg Freezing for Fertility PreservationA woman’s fertility begins to decline in her early 30s due to diminishing egg quality and number. Until recently, options were limited for women who delayed childbearing until later in life or who faced infertility due to cancer treatment. Now, thanks to scientific advances, women have the option to freeze their eggs for future use. Rachel A. Bennett, MD, FACOG*, a board certified reproductive endocrinologist and director of Westchester Reproductive Medicine (WRM), will describe how WRM uses the most effective egg freezing techniques to empower women to take charge of their fertility and family planning.

Living WellIf you have arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease or any other ongoing mental or physical health condition, this six-week educational workshop developed by Stanford University provides valuable tools and information regarding managing disease symptoms, maintaining proper nutrition, exercising, working with your healthcare provider and meeting personal goals. This interactive workshop meets once a week for six weeks and is facilitated by two trained peer leaders.

Women’s HealthThis informational symposium will explore breast cancer health and treatment, women’s urinary and urological issues, and obstetric and gynecological issues and procedures. Information will be presented by a panel of CareMount Medical physicians, including Lyda Rojas-Carroll, MD*; Sheldon Axelrod, MD*; Mark Nogueira, MD*; Susan Vosko, MD*; and Katie Burgess, MD*. A question and answer session will follow each presentation.

A complimentary continental breakfast will be served from 9–9:30am outside the auditorium.

Total Joint ReplacementOngoing classes are offered for those having total hip or knee replacements. Speakers from the ambulatory surgery unit, pre-admission testing, nursing, case management and physical therapy will explain what to expect both before and after surgery.

Alzheimer’s CaregiversCaregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be draining, but you don’t have to go it alone. Join us and receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully care for someone with dementia.

BereavementHospice Care in Westchester & Putnam, Inc., in cooperation with Putnam Hospital Center, offers a professionally facilitated support group that provides an opportunity to learn how to cope with the feelings and changes that occur after the loss of a loved one. You will also be supported by other group members dealing with loss.

Breast and Ovarian Cancer Putnam Hospital Center and Support Connection, Inc. offer a support group for women who have been diagnosed with breast, ovarian or gynecological cancer. Led by a trained facilitator who is a cancer survivor, participants discuss all stages of diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment.

Mental Health (Families & Friends)Sponsored by The Mental Health Association in Putnam County, in cooperation with Putnam Hospital Center, this group provides support for those who have a family member or friend dealing with a mental health issue.

NeuroThis monthly support group is for patients and families of those living with neurological disorders such as stroke/CVA, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Facilitated by the Rehabilitation Services Department, the group offers informational speakers, discussions, fellowship and support.

Oncology Nurse NavigatorThe nurse navigator is an oncology nurse who is the single point of contact for patients newly diagnosed with cancer. The nurse navigator can assist with scheduling initial tests and consultations and help the patient and family members understand his or her diagnosis and plan of care. Contact Dianne Toscano, RN, at (845) 230-4784 with any cancer-related questions.

Look Good Feel BetterDesigned for women dealing with hair loss and skin changes from chemotherapy and radiation, participants will learn specific techniques to help make the most of their appearance while undergoing treatment.

American Heart Association Pediatric First Aid CPR AEDThe Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED course is designed to meet the regulatory requirements for child care workers in all 50 states. It teaches child care providers and others to respond to and manage illnesses and injuries in a child or infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. It covers the four steps of first aid and first aid skills such as finding the problem, stopping bleeding, bandaging and using an epinephrine pen. This program includes training in child CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED), infant CPR and a module in adult CPR and AED plus asthma care training for child care providers. Participants who complete the course will receive a certification card from the American Heart Association valid for two years. Ages 16 to adult.

Wilderness First Aid CertificationGain the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations in the wilderness. The fast-paced, hands-on training is designed for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, kayakers, hunters and individuals working in remote locations. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning and practice skills in hands-on situations. You will learn to improvise medical care by creating makeshift items in your environment to assist with immobilization, bleeding control and other medical emergencies. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a two-year certification in Wilderness First Aid — Standard by the Emergency Care & Safety Institute. This course does NOT offer a CPR AED certification card, but it can be taken in conjunction with our American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Certification Course. Ages 16 to adult.

Babysitting PreparednessThe Babysitting Preparedness course covers feeding, diapering, safety in the home, prevention of SIDS, prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome, basic first aid skills, how to cope with a crying baby, pediatric CPR and how to start a babysitting business. The course is led by nationally certified instructors who also have experience as emergency responders in both professional and community environments. This class is popular among teens, expecting parents and grandparents. Participants who complete the course will receive a two-year certification from the American Safety and Health Institute. Ages 12 to adult. Bring lunch to class.

Pet First Aid, CPR and Disaster PreparednessHelp keep your dogs and cats safe by learning basic first aid, CPR and disaster preparedness. Participants practice hands-on CPR on lifelike furry pet mannequins. Participants who complete the course will receive a two-year certification from the Emergency Care & Safety Institute. Ages 14 to adult.

American Heart Association Friends & Family CPR AEDThe Family & Friends CPR AED course teaches the life-saving skills of adult Hands-Only® CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult and child automated external defibrillator (AED) use, infant CPR with breaths and relief of choking in an adult, child or infant. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment by using the American Heart Association’s research-proven, practice-while-watching technique. This course is ideal for schools, community groups, new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. This course is NOT suitable for those who require a CPR certification card. Ages 12 to adult.

Sports First Aid & Injury PreventionThis course was developed to help coaches, athletic trainers, athletes and parents of athletes manage emergencies they will likely encounter while participating in sports. Topics include the phases of injury and the injury prevention model, prevention tips for sports-related injuries common to specific sports, and treatment for common injuries and illnesses. Participants will learn about assessment, bleeding control and shock management. Students will practice responding to simulated injuries to gain competency in skills. This course meets the NYS coaching requirements for first aid. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a two-year certification card from the Emergency Care & Safety Institute. This course does NOT offer a CPR AED certification card, but it can be taken in conjunction with our American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Certification course. Ages 16 to adult.

AARP Driver SafetyPutnam Hospital Center along with the Putnam County Office for the Aging are co-sponsoring an 8-hour course designed to provide a refresher of the New York State driving regulations and a self-assessment of age-related changes that may affect a person’s driving ability. Completion of the course may result in a 10 percent reduction in liability and collision insurance premiums and a reduction of up to 4 points from your driving record. Participants must be 50 years of age or older. Membership in AARP is not required.

American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AEDThis Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course covers basic first aid, CPR, maneuvers for choking victims and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Instruction will be provided for using techniques on adults, children and infants. This course is suitable for day care workers, construction workers, camp counselors and others who require a CPR certification card. Participants who complete the course will receive a certification card from the American Heart Association valid for two years. Textbook and materials included. Ages 16 to adult.

Prepared ChildbirthDesigned to cover all aspects of labor and delivery, including the Lamaze method and cesarean section, this class is recommended for mothers in the last trimester of their pregnancy.

Volunteering at Putnam Hospital CenterVolunteers are a valued and essential part of Putnam Hospital Center. Our volunteer team is made up of more than 250 generous and talented men, women and students who give their time to make a difference to patients, families and hospital staff. We offer a range of volunteer opportunities and welcome you to join our team. Matching the right volunteer to the right position is essential to the success of our program, so we take the time to meet with each volunteer and review possible opportunities.

Junior VolunteersWe will be interviewing for our summer Junior Volunteer program starting in April.
